Why I'm Abandoning My Feature Film

Mixed feelings about this, but I'm excited for what's to come. After 6 months in writing, pre-production, I've decided to give up on my feature film, Euky. I was planning on using Blender and green screen to create Virtual Environments and doing everything myself (acting, cinematography, editing, music, vfx) but realized I bit off way more than I could chew. I'd likely be spending years in post-production due to the heavy VFX.
The good news is now I'm going to have more time to re-focus on RU-vid video and short films while I continue to explore filmmaking and my own personal strengths, weaknesses, and voice.

Josh, I'm sorry, that's heartbreaking. You put so much work in, but makes total sense that you don't want to spend years on it. The pluses, like you said, is that you learned heaps about blender and the shots you showed looked awesome. I resonated with the feeling of filmmaking being your identity. I struggle with that too. Even though I'm sure it hurts, the 6 months were not wasted. You would have learned heaps and I can't wait to see future shorts and videos! 🙌

Thank Holly! :) You're monthly shorts have been a big inspiration. It's really helped to see someone else out there explore lots of genres, collab with others, and turn out films regularly. I know that's gotta be a ton of work. It's still a bit of a bummer to think that it's not going to get made, but I'm at peace with it. It's a big relief that I'm not forcing myself to unnecessarily struggle with this massive project and that I'll have time to create new things again.

Wasted years on mine. I know the feeling but sometimes it is time to move on

I love the honesty here, man. Gotta take care of yourself and that means as an artist as well. I know you put everything in to everything you make and that can take a toll. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you though!

Wow, it must have been really difficult to make this decision knowing how much time and effort you have invested in the project. I hope you feel at peace knowing that this was the best choice and that great things are on the horizon. I do hope that the day comes when circumstances fall into place for you to bring the story to completion. I am excited to see what comes next!!

hey man, bummed to hear you had to let the project go but i just wanted to say this really hit home for me. i feel a little less crazy knowing other people of faith struggle with putting their identity into filmmaking. thank you for your transparency, i'm looking forward to your future projects!

Hey man, glad to know I'm not the only who struggles with that! Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Thats hard man. Deciding to pull the plug on a project never feels good. It sounds like you still got a lot out of it, and all of those things will fuel whatever you make next! Excited to see what you do in the future.

Thanks Ethan! Alas, the world won't get to hear your voice in it! haha.

Sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you. I suspect that there's a reason why they always advise low budget filmmakers to stick to simple concepts, like very few locations and actors, to keep the cost and complications down. Maybe concentrating on good story, dialogue and actors could help. Sometimes, simplicity is key. I've just made a short film that's mainly dialogue, but hopefully interesting to watch. Anyway, don't lose your creativity, there's always a next time.

Thanks! This actually feels so long ago now haha. I’m currently over halfway through shooting a new feature, and am actually making a short film version of this project (with a bunch of changes to make shooting easier). Simplicity is definitely huge, and something I definitely still struggle with. Trying to thread that needle between simplicity and pushing myself towards challenging things I’m interested in (like VFX). Thanks for watching, I will check out your film soon!

Love ya brother. You’re doing this for the right reasons, but I know it can be discouraging. Keep at it tho!! There’ll always be a new creative idea for a new time and place ☺️ But hold up, if you never make the feature, can we please at least get a short of Ninja Yo-Yo?? I’ve rewatched that like 10 times now 🔥🔥

Thanks bro. :) Haha well I do want to be more of those type of effects, CG integrated into live action, rather than the other way around. That effect was actually surprisingly easy to do!

@@obscurity_films Wait there was CG in that shot lol? Didn't even notice; I thought you were just being a boss with the yo-yo haha

Frank!! So good to hear from you!! Yes, let's talk! Shoot me an email at joshuajacobbailey@gmail.com ! Man, I have a hard time going back and watching that film from a script perspective, but I've skimmed through it and am still in awe of with what you were able to pull off with the cinematography. You had such a vision for that thing.

Haha thanks bro. I am currently working on a new anthology feature film with 4 stories, and I’ve shot 2 of them so far! And actually this film that I gave up on will be one of the stories! It will look much different than the original idea and much shorter, but still the same basic premise and main characters!

Sorry to hear you canned the project. It sounds like you aimed too high, production-wise, for a largely solo-made film. The solo aspect can be a great restraint for leading to creativity. Like Michael Caine said: “Use the difficulty.”

i don't understand, those VFX shots are so cool. Couldn't you of used those? Cool, you're a Christian. Me too.

Hey nice to meet you brother! I'm glad you liked the VFX shots! It's not so much that I'm unhappy with the quality of those VFX shots, it's more the sheer quantity of them that I would have had to create. Ultimately, I decided making hundreds of those shots in isolation over the next years isn't how I want to spend my time and not the best for my mental health or creativity. I have a plan for my next project that involves a lot more collaborating and I think is more achievable. More to come soon!
