Rolex’s culture has always turned me off from the brand. The games they play with the waiting lists and having to buy a Rolex you don’t want to have the ability to possibly buy the one you really want. So many reasons I’ve spent my hard earned money on other luxury brands. Another gem sir.

To be fair… it’s not just rolex fault… the demand for rolex has skyrocketed the past decade…there are just not enough watchmakers in a small country like Switzerland.
@steelsteez6118
@steelsteez6118 Год назад
@@gman6862 I hope you do realize that Rolex is mass produced; not hand made. There is very little interaction with human assembly and their timepieces. This has been covered to death. The problem stems from the authorized dealers that are able to manipulate the supply to satiate an ever growing greed for back door revenue. The hype + demand + AD supply manipulation = your experience walking into a Rolex AD.

I like Rolex as a product, but hate their business model and the culture surrounding it. I've moved on to Omega and haven't looked back. I have a SMP300 black dial that is stunning, a Sapphire sandwich Speedy and soon a white dial Aqua Terra (which I think is the unsung hero of the Omega line). Not only do I love the Omega lineup, I feel valued as a customer when I walk into an Omega boutique. The last few times I've purchased a piece from the boutique in Green Hills, we spent the better part of an hour drinking Weller and nerding out over dozens of watches, from G Shocks on up. I didn't just walk away with a historically relevant timepiece that I find amazing, I had a great time talking with the watch enthusiasts that worked there, and to me, that was proof that you aren't just buying the timepiece, but the experience itself. Compare that to the drug deals I had to engage in with ADs to try and get a Rolex and I felt it cheapened the brand because the experience was so beneath it.

Man really loving Accutron's revival, and its great to see you point out Newman's Spaceview. You should get yourself a vintage Accutron Astronaut, the official watch of Nasa's X-15 rocket plane and the CIAs A-12 program. Not to mention a favourite amongst the early gemini astronauts. Just an awesome watch.

I bought an Alpina Seastrong 300 m quartz in January and it’s been fantastic (rare watch to meet my specs in a high end quartz). Tonight I gave my wife for our anniversary the Alpina Seastrong Comtesse quartz as the ladies version of mine. She loves it. I think Alpina is highly under rated as a Swiss brand. Suggest a look; Joma Shop and others have huge sales occasionally. I wanted a high end 300 m + quartz with 44 mm case and 22 mm band, etc., so narrrowed it down to the Alpina and a Longines Hydroconquest. The sale price on the Alpina and the heft of it won over the Longines more dressy thin feel. Also, the lug to lug length on the Longines was just too long for my wrist.

Finally, I'm collecting what I *love*; not what the "scene" says I should love...

I recently got wiped out as a trader (recession) and I had to sell my “entire” collection, which consisted of just two Rolex’s. This was however, the best thing that could have happened for my long term watch collecting; I was forced to appreciate less expensive and *more humble* options. I just recently ordered my first watch of the new collection. Oris Aquis 36.5 blue dial. I’m probably more excited than I’ve ever been to get a watch in the mail.

When we popped to Prague for the weekend, I took my Pro-Trek again for my runs, and knowing I would not be swimming, I took my Breitling Endurance Pro for day wear, and my awesome Omega Speedmaster for evening. Travel trio is Seiko Turtle SRPE93, Hamilton Khaki Auto 38 black dial. and Seiko 5 (SNK809). I inherited a 1965 Datejust turn-o-graph from my good father. Reference 1625 two-tone. I remember he said Rolex was the best and at the time it was seen as a tool watch and for people that needed something reliable, durable yet stylish. Nowadays it’s all about status and superficiality. It makes me sad because I fell in love with the brand due to the history and because my godfather(which was like my grandfather really). I think if I get one, it might be pre-2000. Possibly birth year and when the brand was still tool-ish.

I've been on a "waitlist" for over a year for an AK and I find myself asking how in the world this is a luxury experience. Very close to selling off both of my current Rolex models. With the price one would fetch for, I'm spoiled for choice and I could buy a piece that's 5 times the watch with the money. Also hate that I can't daily wear Rolex because of all the crimes in major cities. You have all this money tied up in a luxury piece, then can't even enjoy it without having to worry about looking over your shoulder every 5 minutes. No thanks.

Hi TGV I travel with a Citizen eco drive dress watch, Hamilton Khaki Scuba( Hamilton green nato strap) & a Railmaster with nylon strap. Before I collected watches, all I ever took on my travels was my trusty Timex Ironman that did everything. I’ve also got a Casioak g shock, which is so hard to change the time I leave it at home. Great content & last visited NYC in 2017. It brought back great memories.

The Oris aquis is definitely next on my list. Amazing specifications for the money and they really pop in person. I agree 💯 about Rolex. In fact it's turned me off a bit from my bb58. I've thought about trading it on for some " watch nerd " watches.

Excellent video, TGV! My normal travel trio: 1. Tudor GMT 2. Normally a Steinhart Diver of some ilk 3. A Dan Henry Chronograph Love the shots in Grand Central. You should stop by Grand Central Watch. Excellent folks. You would love what they do. Also enjoyed Russel’s video. He has really come along as a content producer. Love the Accutron. I’d take that all day over any typical modern Rolex. Regardless of price. I must admit, I have not fallen in love with Grand Seiko yet. I should probably take a deeper look at them, but they never seem to grab my attention and hold it for long. There are so many options and models it is hard for me to keep them all straight. Thank you as always, my friend. Excellent work. Looking forward to the State of the Collection. Onward and upward. Be well, my friend!

Another great video TGV. I bring 4 watches on my business trips which always involve crossing time zones so on the flight, it's lightweight, probably the best world time watch of all time, my $30 Casio Royale. Once I arrive, an Omega Seamaster and a Grand Seiko and being in a tough environment which is part of my work, a G-Shock Mudmaster. I can't say I'm done with Rolex as I never started. I will never suffer the indignity of queueing up to give a company $10k. I wouldn't wait in line to enter a restaurant, why would I do it for a Rolex? My other feeling about Rolex is that it has become cheapened (an oxymoron of course) by becoming a fashion watch. It's Daniel Wellington on steroids, or maybe the Louis Vuitton handbag of the watch world. And they're not rare at all. A million watches a year is 10 million in 10 years. There's no shortage, except in people's minds.

3 watches for travel: I go to LA to watch the dog when the kids are out of town so 1. Beach beater: Casioak GA-2110ET all gray. 2. Vintage: Leonidas 4002 late 50s 33mm chronograph with cream dial. Perfect size on my 7” wrist on leather strap. Worn by my cold warrior uncle in the USAF where he might have acquired it on post in the Phillipines or Panama. 3. The total cop out: Apple Watch regrettably unmatched for cardio (hiking, running, swimming workouts)

Awesome strap a huge improvement on the earlier versions and… with a sunburst green dial that makes the orange minute hand explode. For just 400 euro !

Rolex became a yuppie icon in the 80's. That's when I started feeling that way about it. It doesn't make it a bad watch brand, just an insanely overprized one. And also it has the same problem as BMW. If you have one, people assume you are a jerk, because all jerks have one.

I’m a Dad and come from a dirt poor family. I have wanted a Rolex since I can remember and I just turned 50.I was turning 50 in 6 months and I had a bit of money tucked away so I started shopping and I went down the rabbit hole. I couldn’t believe I had over 10,000 US and I couldn’t spend it on the watch I wanted. I went back and forth with the AD and one day the lady admitted I wasn’t even put on the list because they were backed up and maybe I could find one second hand. Bummer but then I seen tons of brand new watches but they had a 150% mark up. A 10,000 watch was 15,000.Well I seen where all the new watches were and they belonged to Gray Market dealers. I finally found a brick and mortar store I liked and a salesman I liked even more. I bought from Federico and Delray Watch Co. I spent 11k on a beautiful 09 V Serial Submariner pre-ceramic and I love it. I thought I would be done shopping but now I’m addicted to looking at watches and how they work. I see beautiful watches I love and if money was not a issue I would own most of them. I now have 1-Seiko,1- Citizen Eco-Drive,1-G-Shock and 1-Rolex Sub. I hope to own a Vintage Evidenza and a 1940’s Rolex Oyster Bubbleback. I would also love to have a MoonPhase and a Tudor Tiger Prince Date Chronograph. I could go on but just over a year ago I had no idea how many wonderful pieces there were out there and for much less money than my Rolex. I know if you ask 50 people to name a expensive watch 45 would say Rolex but they are clueless like I was and realized Rolex was no where near expensive compared to the RM or AP Royal Oak! Apology for the really long comment. Have a great week all my brother and sisters in our watch community.

Love the video TGV! Appreciate the takes on Rolex and their place in a collection and social media nowadays. My go-to trio for travel: - Casio F91W for any situations where I need a beater/something that can get dirty. - Seiko moonphase 7f39-6029 on a black NATO for casual day-to-day (I actually picked mine up a few years back for $100). - Omega Seamaster 2553.41.00 w/ green wave dial for gatherings and any outings. Watch goals for the near future (not sure if I can make it happen within a year haha): JLC Reverso Duoface (preferably w/ a moonphase) to fill that standout piece in my collection.

rolex's distribution system (hiding watches in the back of the store and telling customers they are out of stock, reserving the watches for favorite customers) is so repugnant, I won't even watch videos featuring rolexes. It's 2022, not the 1950's, which is what their distribution system reminds me of. Sickening.
