NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? Watch this first: • How-to Saddle Hunt wit...
This is a very minimalist method for mobile saddle hunters. We are showing you exactly how we climb into large trees with minimal equipment, cost and effort.
This method may not be for everyone, but think of it as another tool in your arsenal. Please watch until the end as there's a lot of information on DRT climbing technique that we believe is one of the safest, quietest, least expensive ways to climb a tree for saddle hunting. I hope you all benefit from our technique. Please like and share with others.
Please remember that climbing of any kind is inherently dangerous. The DRT climbing method has been a standard in the arbor industry for 100 years. But remember It's only safe if you do it right. Ensure your knots are tied correctly and make sure you set every knot before you get off the ground. This is our method that we use in saddle hunting, but only do what makes you comfortable and do this at your own risk.
Feel free to comment down below with your questions, We'd love to help in any way we can.

Joe what I found is in order to switch modes with the little white button is when it's out like you have it in the video is when it would change modes then pushing it in locked it.look at the back side of the white button there's a white slot to use a flat screw drive to push the button out to allow the change in mode then push back in to lock it.At least that's how it worked for me.

I also prefer the GriGri+ . I used 9.5 mm rope this past season with no issues. For rappel, I operate the lever with my left hand. (GriGri+ colored plate facing me). I have it attached to my bridge with a Freino carabiner which has a secondary hook (for lack of a better term) that I can clip my rope tail into which guides the rope over the silver wear plate for the rappel. Works great for keeping the rope in the proper place on descent.

Another great video, Joe. Make sure that when you are referring to “the Madrock” you specify the “Madrock Safe Guard”. The Safe Guard and the Life Guard are two distinctly different devices in how they work. The Safe Guard does not require an auto block back-up. In fact the instructions from Madrock specifically state that. The Gri Gri + does. I love my Gri Gri +. I bought a Safe Guard a couple of years ago to check it out, and at first my descent was smoother and more controlled with the +, and I was a bit more anxious with the Safe Guard. After working with my Safe Guard a bit I am now as smooth and confident with my Safe Guard. The more you practice, the less you tend to panic, so the less the Plus’s panic feature is a “+”! (See how I did that?). I am leaning more and more toward the Safe Guard the more I use it. Either is a great choice. Hunt safely, my Friends!

I highly recommend anyone using any sort of assisted braking device use a blocking knot to prevent any sort of slippage when there is slack introduced into the system. A simple overhand knot is quick, effective, and will keep you safe.

I like the noise. It gives me positive feedback. Why the concern with it being quiet. Good video.

In a hunting situation we want to do everything as silently as possible . Unnatural sounds in the woods could alert deer to your presence so we want to eliminate as much sound as possible for stealth. Our channel is focused on utilizing these climbing tools in a deer hunting application so stealth is important to that community.

I'm sure that's perfectly safe however you would not be able to claim any liability for an accident caused by equipment failure by using a rope that is out of spec.

Also be careful because the manufacturer publishes specs for a reason. A device could cause damage to out of spec rope that may not be obvious right away like creating permanent deformation or flat spots that indicate that the core has been smashed and weakened, ready to separate.

So much to think about; and I’m thinking it’s a simpler matter to stay with M.R.S. Just today I was placing presets and I used about ninety-five feet of my 120 feet of rope to climb and trim some branches. The descent seemed to take a while; and I was thinking about keeping my Blake’s hitch from overheating. S.R.S. might be more forgiving; yet there’s more gear to carry and make noise. Dunno.

They both have pros and cons and single stick climbing will help get us in trees that we can't set a preset loop in. I utilize all 3 forms of climbing. I find it easier to set a climbing line with SRT because I don't need to be as picky with limb selection so I tend to utilize SRT most of the time when I'm setting loops and scout climbing, then I set my loop in the perfect crotch to be able to return and MRS/DRT climb when I hunt.. it's nice to have options and with a SRT kit you can set it up to DRT climb on it so it's nice to have tha.t flexibility and it's fun to be able to utilize a few different methods based on the circumstances of the tree

i use the regular gri gri and perfer it over the plus for both tree work and ground work (as a belay device) and always pair it with dynamic ropes.

Does it have the panic feature as well?
@anotheryoutuber_
@anotheryoutuber_ 10 месяцев назад
@@benjaminbunny99 no, if you pull more on the lever itll send faster. i personally dislike the panic feature on the gri gri plus as its a lil less predicable but if you havent used the old one you might not mind.

This subject is I got my kit for MRS system was looking at a bunch of trees that had more crotch style limbs then straight out , will rope get stuck in them or do you all ways have to use straight out limbs, don't want to compromise my system or damage rope ant thoughts, thank you
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 года назад
So for MRS you want to avoid those tight crotches like you see often on locusts . You want to avoid extra friction
@tomnolan2186
@tomnolan2186 2 года назад
So could you just use a figure 8 knot on a bite below the gri gri to back it up? I'm a one sticker and I think this would work for ascending, hunting from, then just undo it right before rappelling down??
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 года назад
Yes , you can use a safety knot under a gri gri but I think it's not recommended on the madrock.

I also use the grigri. I couldn’t find anywhere if people used it for the Samson predator rope becuase it’s 11.4mm and grigri fits 8.5-11mm but optimized for 9-10.5mm. I took a shot and my 11.4 works pretty well. Just a little tight but works great and didn’t have to buy a new rope.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 года назад
It works but I once asked a representative from Petzl if using 11.4mm rope slightly above the spec would be OK. His exact words to me was "Absolutely not" . He didn't explain why but he said going outside the rope spec was unsafe . I've used it with the predator too but it's important to recognize when we go outside tge spec we are taking a risk.
@theoutdoorangler1173
@theoutdoorangler1173 2 года назад
@@NYSaddleHunter that is true but I rock climb a lot and have done so a whole lot with the predator and grigri. If anything it’s safer becuase the thicker diameter grabs easier but as for Petzl, I understand why they say it’s not recommend.
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 года назад
@@theoutdoorangler1173 I don't know much about Rock climbing but I'd assume in Rock climbing a more dynamic rope is preferable as it will absorb shock through elongation whereas I think more static ropes are more desirable for climbing because they don't stretch. In a way it's a different application one is more of a fall arrest the other is a fall restraint climbing system with no slack . So I'd assume predator or any more static rope would be less desirable for Rock climbing just because it's more static? I know predator is like 3% elongation Not sure what Rock climbing they recommended but I'm assuming you'd want a more dynamic rope to absorb the fall shock no?
@theoutdoorangler1173
@theoutdoorangler1173 2 года назад
@@NYSaddleHunter most cases yes dynamic ropes so like 25-35% stretch which is for lead climbing but if your top roping or got me solo climbing either will work but static is good cuz you won’t be falling hard becuase the belayer is always taking in slack so usually a static is desirable for top roping becuase you don’t lose progress if you fall
@tomnolan2186
@tomnolan2186 2 года назад
So would this be good to use for one sticking when ascending? Will it lock up right away if there is minor slack in your system? Been wanting to get the madrock but can't find any? Thanks Tom
@NYSaddleHunter
@NYSaddleHunter 2 года назад
Yes it's perfect for one stick climbing and for RAD style SRT climbing.
@thefullaj
@thefullaj 2 года назад
It will work I will say and emphasize it is an assisted braking device so tie a back up knot to ensure you don't slip, when there is slack in the system the rope can move more freely.

I am not sure what I have done wrong but my gri gri + will not allow me to descend once at height. The handle has no tension on it whatsoever. I am not sure if my brother engaged the panic feature when he used it but you can pull as hard as you want and it simply does not let you descend. Any experience with this Joe?

Although grigri is highly used for non-professional tree climbing, grigri is not really recommended for ascending for the professional tree industry works. Reason - Grigri is a BELAY device, that is used to belay the rock climbers mostly with dynamic ropes. So there is potential chance of slight slip - it is not the fault, it is how the device SHOULD work, And it should be OK with dynamic ropes. For static (or almost static) ropes - it is potentially unsafe. It is used in tree industry mostly for the base anchoring. And the second issue is the rope thickness - mostly all ropes for arborists are minimum 11mm, and tends to almost 13 mm, that does not fit in grigri. On the other hand - I've never heard about anybody have the issues with grigri for climbing. Non professional/beginners are usually watch for what is happening with the tools, how it behaves, and does not allow dangerous situations. For the professional workers - they have much more other stuff to watch at, so it becomes critical.
@thefullaj

It does catch and hold tension on static ropes as well. I have used the gri gri 2 extensively in mountain rescue operations with static ropes. A big safety tip is a back up blocking knot on the break strand, a simple overhand knot works perfect.
