Earlier in the year, I decided to buy QYLD. At the time it felt like the right decision to make. However, not only things in my personal life have changed, but after doing more research, I have decided to get out of QYLD and buy into JEPQ. This video is not to convince anyone to buy or sell anything. The goal of this video is to walk you through my decision making for why I sold QYLD and bought JEPQ. The first part of the video I share why the change and the second part of the video, I review JEPQ and make a few suggestions for those considering an ETF like JEPQ.
Why I sold QYLD and bought JEPQ 4:45
(1) FIRE date was pushed back
(2) Tax loss harvesting

(5) Issuer JPM vs Global X
(6) Out of the money vs at the money call options

I sold out of the YLD’s as well. Sinking ship right there. I only hold SCHD, JEPI, and JEPQ in my income account. I’m retiring in 3 years. Long term, once I have more than enough income I plan on stopping my buys on the JEP’s and just buy SCHD. I’ll slowly sell off the JEP’s and roll that money into SCHD as well.

I like having the option to retire sooner if I want to or protect my income through another source with a covered call etf or similar high yield income generating fund. I see it as another protective layer like an emergency fund of 3-12 months of savings. If I lose my job, I like the ability to turn off drip and not have to worry about my savings going down because I have that backup source of income. I can turn back on drip or use the extra income for other long term investments as desired. It's also freeing in the workplace to take on more risk in taking that other opportunity that pays more while not having to worry as much if things don't go well.

I realized that QYLD was a mistake and sold them all, but not only for the reasons you raised here. Fundamentally, I realized that limiting upside of growth stocks is a stupid idea. JEPQ seems to be slightly better, but still targeted the same set of growth stocks. I might as well put my money into QQQ or something. For income purpose, I've put my money into JEPI, as I still like idea of Covered Call type ideas. Also, I realized that it's important to manage the downside, when upside gets limited.

You might want to talk with JP Morgan's customer service to double-check some of the points in the video. They told me the only thing the ELNs do is handle the covered calls. There are many types of ETNs; each can do different things with different goals. The ELNs JEPI/JEPQ invest only sell covered calls. Also, according to the Summary Prospectus (page 2), only 20% of the fund will invest in the ELNs. JEPI does have upside potential and does not sacrifice principal for dividends. The growth will be a bit slower in up-trending markets.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Год назад
Hey Brian you are correct. The fact that they invest in out of the money call options will allow for capital appreciation in bull markets - but yes it will be limited.
@MMuniz

Great video, I agree with a lot of your points. Only thing I’ll mention is that the point about atm calls and price never going up isn’t exactly true. 1. If you just look at history, the price goes up and down over weeks, months, and even years. (Yes I know over time is has decayed and most likely will). 2. They r European options which mean they are settled in cash. The cash they make is typically in excess of their distribution of 1% monthly. The excess is then reinvested into the holdings. This makes the nav go up. If the underlying goes up a ton, then it becomes a liability. But at the end of the day the market has ups and downs which is why the fund will go up and down as well, though most likely never actually hit zero as long as there is volatility and options premiums.

Hey there, big fan of your channel. When using Qyld or Jepi /jepq in a Roth IRA. I’ve heard of a strategy where you purchase enough Qyld or Jepi to generate income to fund your IRA. Like enough to make 500-600$ per month then turn off the drip and use the income to purchase quality securities. Thoughts?
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Год назад
Well the dividend in this case would not count as a "contribution" because it is coming from within the account. I mean technically you could look at it that way, but the dividend comes at a cost of the total return of your investments. If you have over 5 years before you want to use the dividend, QYLD/JEPI etc.. are not ideal because your total return is generally lower than the index, e.g. SP500 or total us stock market.
@Goofball333
@Goofball333 Год назад
@@DividendGrowthInvesting I think I understand now. The 30k needed to generate that div income would make more $ through growth vs the income it would generate, then at retirement switch to a income etf. I guess there is something motivating about seeing large monthly income to help “fund” and pay for quality securities forever or as long as you hold the income etfs. Kind of like someone else Is paying for them. :)

I havent seen a data input where i take the "likely dividend" and reinvest into something with upside potential. I wonder how that would look. In a down market, i would be collecting the dividend for each share i own and buying growth, in a sideways market, i would be accumulating shares of growth, and in a upside market, i could get left in the dust if the market goes up too fast, but that is the trade off i would guess.

I started adding JEPQ (since it has options trading available, which helps to get around occasional unfavorable bid-ask spread and illiquidity). JEPQ's distribution may decrease substantially (compared to the past two months) since volatility has decreased. But it's okay because volatility will likely make a comeback in 2023. QYLD's potentially hidden benefit is generating long-term capital losses (from share price depreciation) while reaping positive total return (money invested < dividends received + proceeds from shares sold). The long-term capital losses can be used to lower taxes, which can be helpful when investors do not want to incur short-term capital gains/losses (from selling holdings) to cover taxes. The general negative sentiment around QYLD partially comes from people who bought QYLD at prices 20%+ above the value of the dividend-adjusted 50-month simple moving average (at the time of purchase). Staying 20%+ above a long-term simple moving average for an extended time is difficult, not just for QYLD, but even for stocks like AAPL, LOW, JNJ, etc. Being patient enough for price to come back to a long-term moving average is challenging. Great Content as Always Jake, Frugal J

When folks talk about what you "pay" in regards to expenses, I always scratch my head because you don't really pay it. The fee is taken out of the dividend before being issued. You don't even see it.

If you go to portfoliovisualizer.com and backtest the YLD funds as well as JEPI, you will see that once you stop reinvesting those dividends, your dividend CAGR goes negative meaning that your income from those positions will decrease.

Yeah these global X ETFs have been a little dissapointing. I had QYLD and RYLD and sold all of them and doubled down on JEPI/JEPQ.

I moved from QYLD to RYLD and JEPI. Maybe take a look at VOC. VOC is up 90.83% ytd, 16.31% dividend yield. It's beating inflation by OVER 80%. 🤷

Same here. I like selling the options myself. Part of my portfolio is devoted to wheeling dividend aristocrats. If the puts get assigned, I am good. If not, cash. Then either wait and collect dividends or start selling calls depending on the yield, price movement, value, etc.

JEPQ has only been around for 6 months ! Very dangerous gamble. QYLD has 8 years of reliable, big dividends and is outperforming the QQQs by a large margin. QYLD is only for income Not growth. QYLD 6.4Bil assets compared to 600mil for JEPQ.
