Keenen's Issue With FOX's Decision To Air Reruns: In Detail "Fox decided to drop 'The Heights' (series) from its Thursday-night schedule and fill the hole with reruns of In Living Color. That move made the value of the old shows (In Living Color), which revert to Wayans’ ownership next year for sale in syndication, take an immediate nosedive." [Via Entertainment Weekly]
Comedy Hype 1st, I'd like to say that it is VERY arrogant of WAYNAN's to say that there is no more real talent out there! I only have to name Key & Peel. I rem' ppl comparing his show, ILC, to SNL & not being too nice. Although, their critics were just SNL boosters.💃 It will never be like it was before. Nothing ever is. But why not?! It couldn't be worse than any of these other shows. By that same token, SNL s/d've been cancelled or moved to cable/NETFLIX 12yrs ago.
@@kjk7611 I just don't think it's arrogance on his part for saying the talent isn't like it was before when he started the show. Alot of newer comics are super PC where Jim Carey, David Allen Grier, Damon Wayans, and so on were not super politically correct. So if the nee cast is afraid to cross lines and make fun of culture of today, then it leads to lackluster output and causes the talent to look less than what it was before. You see what they did to Kevin Hart, Roseanne, Louis CK when a joke was not PC .....Louis CK makes a joke about school shootings and people go off on him, Kevin Hart does a gay joke and the masses want him to lose his job and apologize, Roseanne Barr lost her job on a show with her name in the title off of a joke. You really think Comedians who want to come up and are hungry are going to risk their entire careers to make a show great when comedy vets are getting called out for jokes being offensive? Nah.....so the talent pool for risk takers in comedy is less than it was in the beginning of In Living Color....just off that alone
@@LowercaseKev You are very correct in your assessment. Time has changed with over sensitive people in charge of what they deem politically correct & funny.
Keenan Ivory Wayans is the Realest brother in the world - He got the plug and put his entire family on AND his homies/homegirls! That was arguably the most talented/legendary group of comedians ever assembled on one show
Yep! We will never see good talent like that again, with family and friends. That show was an open door career opportunity for the younger generation to come. Fox had to mess up a good thing, it had me thinking what would Fox have lost, by letting Keenan do it his way. Man I miss all the laugh with no killings, those were the best days ever!!!!
Jim Carrey got his start on this show. Jamie Foxx got his start on this show. J-Lo got her start on this show. And look where they are now. Keenan Ivory Wayans gave these superstars their 1st taste of fame.
i just read the other day that the Wayans family, over the course of their collective careers, have generated upwards of $1 billion for the entertainment industry. pretty damn impressive parents to have and raise a family like this.
SNL was just as stacked at the time: Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Kevin Nealon, Jan Hooks, Dana Darvey, Phil Hartman...hell, that's just the top of it. It was an amazing time for sketch comedy, ILC had more of an edge to it, but SNL was on fire at around the same time.
ILC was able to push boundaries and was in a non-PC era. The amount of creativity was amazing. SNL was not in the same league, but SNL did have it's moments.
Ean - I would agree that it would NOW, but when SNL first started, with Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and Chevy Chase, then, uh NO!!!!
As much as I would love for In Living Color to come back I agree with Keenan, if the new version was going to be a watered down not as funny show compared to the original leave it alone. Plus the World is a lot more sensitive than it was in the 90's.
It could work if you use the right people like Chris rock bill burr social media comedians people whos comedy revolves around everybody i can imagine longbeachgriffy doing woke black feminst sketches or even seeing mr james skits
It's also respectable. Wayans has proven that, to him, it's about more than just money. He really does value the art of his shows, as well. He's probably one of the only people in Hollywood that actually does value art, not just fame and wealth.
This was during the time of Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Phil Hartman ect.....it was just an incredible era for comedy on all of these shows.
To this day, in my family we say the phrase, "Homie don't play dat." Most people look at us funny, but hey- that was comedy platinum. It exceeded gold!
Men On ..., The Brother's Brother, Wanda ... That shit was Comedy Platinum, man. Discovered it just a few weeks ago here on tube. I'm from Germany and was just a little fucker when the show was produced, so I had a pretty good time with those uploads. But, yeah, unfortunately it wouldn't survive this time of SJWnism. Fucked up time for Comedy with balls. (Damon as Anton Jackson is the funniest shit ever - laughed so hard. :))
I remember as a kid being outside playing, making sure that I run back to the house in time to watch "In Living Color" just so I could be hip to what was talked about the next day in school.
Basically this. If someone made a joke and someone gets offended they will gather people who feel the same make a big stink and the people will get cancelled and be forced to say sorry.
Edward Gaines I fucking hate that corny shit. Big Bang is not funny, it's lame af, mediocre at best. Ew that stupid unfunny shit show should have been cancelled years ago, but the majority in this country have a dry, horrible sense of humor. 🤷🏻♀️ fuck Big Bang and snl. What college kid is watching snl? 😖
Yes very true! However it won't rest, everytime it draws a laugh it is shiny & new all over again like the way it was made to be! It will never die or rest, ever... peace & love : )
No reboot for "In Living Color". I agree with Keenen Wayans that it's a different time now and attempts to replicate the brilliance and quality of the original series would be disappointing.
Yes, it's kinda like a boxer fighting past his/her prime....hang up the gloves and go out on top....but the mighty dollar, it will influence us to make regrettable decisions
I'm so glad you said "laughing at each other" cos that's EXACTLY what the show did. It presented all of our stereotypes and we got to poke fun at them. At the end of the day, it brought us closer together because EVERYBODY watched!
D Nizzle There'll never be a greater stress reliever than laughter, especially a show of nearly 30 years old, I've always wondered why they never took the Three Stooges off? Our laughter is our Escape,
When John Amos stood up against what Black comedy against the CBS writers he was fired from "Good Times". When Keenan stood up against FOX he had to quit. Dave Chapelle left Comedy Central because of the same issue of the producers forcing him to do things derogatory skits against Blacks. True story of why these great Black shows ended.
@@rali-cassim2733 Very true but at least (in some ways) these black folks had networks were to express their talents from Martin, to In Living Color to all these black sitcom which is still awesome to this day... but in many other countries black talents aren’t even allowed to have this ‘’opportunity’’.
@@GoldGollum I would like to agree with you, but I'm not sure which countries to which you may be referring. This (US) is definitely the most famous and one of the largest producers and markets for entertainment. I am familiar with Nigerian movies and local entertainment in the Caribbean, even Canada and the UK. Where are they not given opportunity to be entertainers?
People today are to guarded and humorless in a different way. Somethings in life like nature should just be left alone and in the memory of our hearts as completely genuine.
The 90s was a great time to live in, shows like "In Living Color" "Martin" "Married with Children" might have crossed certain lines during these modern times but back in the day we weren't thinking about insensitivity, it was all about laughter. As much as I would love to see a reboot, it would only end up being cancelled because of the sensitivity and political correctness that the world has become.
I agree. Even though I was born in the 2000s I watch In Living Color on Aspire and RU-vid. I was introduced to the show back in 2018 and I loved it ever since. If I went back in time to the 90s, I would like to see the reactions that people gave when the show first came out to the public.
@@jasonmendoza2044 Oh come on, that's no comparison LOL a cartoon show on a basic cable network doesn't have the same effect like a live action comedy. Most people can dismiss a cartoon being super edgy. The three shows Alex mentioned pissed people off!
It definitely couldn’t work today. It wouldn’t survive all the protests marches. It would be canceled along with the studio or company that brought it back .
I miss in living color, Martin, and the Chappell show. No other shows have been able to even come close to that kind of funny. As the original cast of in living color left the humor changed. It became corny towards the end. That's why I think a reboot wouldn't survive. People remember the original In Living Color cast, and it's human nature to compare old against new. There is no way a new cast could do the show any justice. I think letting the show rip is the way to go. We can always reminisce via youtube videos about the good ol days. Some things shouldn't be brought back to life.
Couldn't agree more. As sad as it is to say, In Living Color belongs in the 90s. Yes if it were brought back, there's so many things to joke about today to relief people of the horrors thats going on in America such as covid and Trump being president etc. But we still live in an era where people get overly offended by anything you say. In Living Color was always political and touched on stereotypes, and was very edgy. No way in hell would it last past 1 season if it came back. And obviously it would have a new younger cast which wouldn't feel the same cause its not what we're used to.
I'm Arab and I grew up on all of those Black shows and storytelling from a Black perspective. Our mom was conservative so there were a lot of shows in general she didn't allow us to watch, but everything from In Living Color to Martin to Moesha to Fresh Prince to Living Single to Family Matters (my favorite as a kid) to The Parkers and so on.
It don’t need to return. At the time, it was brilliant and a come up for so many people. Jamie Foxx, Jim Carrey J Lo etc. The feel now wouldn’t be the same. Everybody who was on this show are all legends already. It wouldn’t make sense to bring it back. Too many just wouldn’t get it
You can't recreate the greatness of In living Color. It kicked SNL's ass. SNL went down hill after the not ready for prime time players left. They struggled for a few years. SNL has spent decades being a shadow of what it was in it's former glory. I don't want to see IN Living Color's legacy become tarnished to the point of being a joke like SNL.
It’s crazy how SNL can still be on after all these years but these days In Living Color, The Wayan’s Bros, And Martin don’t need any reboots I love the way they are #Classics
SNL was iconic during it's earlier seasons. The early 1975 cast members included John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroid, Garrett Morris, Chevy Chase and Laraine Newman. SNL was the show to rush home to watch on Saturday night because it was edgy for that period. There were no VCRs back then. It was a big deal to say "bitch" on live tv unlike today. Later, the seasons with Eddie Murphy were hilarious. Eddie Murphy did a skit about Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood. Subsequent seasons of SNL were not as funny to me with some exceptions. SNL gave us Tina Faye, Will Ferrell, Chris Farley, Alec Baldwin, Leslie Jones, Al Franken, Joe Piscopo, Gilbert Gottfried, Bill Murray, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph and a few others. I enjoyed In Living Color also. Sometimes, I would get tired of the stale Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown jokes. All of these comedy variety type shows exist because of past shows such as The Red Skelton Show, The Flip Wilson Show, The Richard Pryer Show, The Carol Burnett Showand other mainstream situation comedy shows. In my opinion, each show was funny during it's era.
Chapelle said in his recent Mark Twain monologue: "“The 1st amendment is 1st for a reason. The 2nd amendment is just in case that 1st one doesn’t work out!” We must protect the right to free speech. Political correctness is just the first step to taking that away.
Free speech just means the government can't silence you. You can still be criticized, especially for mocking minorities or the disabled. In 2020 they aren't putting up with it anymore.
Gay ppl got offended but there were also ppl who loved the show. I agree though that it might not last long if it did come back. In the end its all about what the ppl ACTUALLY want otherwise why even try to reboot it.
@@88K-d6h Did they really used to be widely accepted or was there a shortage of people who maybe spoke up for themselves? Nice dialogue but things have changed drastically since that time. Everyone is in their feelings about every little thing. Just check out the comments under videos on RU-vid.
One of 2 shows I never missed back in tha day. In Living Color and Married with Children. As a comedy fan who grew up on Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and Cheech and Chong albums, I absolutely considered that Sunday night line up lit up and so groundbreaking. I loved that both shows werent afraid to push back against PC and used clever writing, modern day events and the absolute best comedy cast ever to get the word out. I'd love to see a reunion of both shows but not in this day and age. Neither would get away with it and would be censored down to a joke. I've enjoyed "The Ranch" on Netflix as the closest thing I've seen to pushing a PC boundry as of late. But nothing close to LC or The Bundy's. RIP 1990's and thanks for the Gems...
"Married with Children" did have a PC beginning, it was originally supposed to replace "GOOD TIMES", but as we all now know there is no way that would have flown with a black cast. Obviously, the writing would have been different but the theme would remain the same.
Thank you Sir, Momma always said you learn something new every day, even when the day is over. Interesting as I was a fan of Good Times as well and never knew that "Married" was to be a replacement.
antoinec822 they did that with boondocks too. Ruined it! Tried to replace pop bang bang🤦🏾♂️ it did not work they hired him back. No one could re create his unique voice. The sabotaged Mcgruder.
Wrong. He started using only his family flr akits. Tommy lee davison said it on a radio shiw. People like him and jim czrrey were being held back. Go bacm and watch theast season its mainly sketches with the waynes.
@@937dboy That's the thing people don't know when to stop while they're ahead. The boondocks should never have come back for a 4th season, it was the weakest one by far and the fact it didn't have Magruder involved anymore spoke volumes. I mean technically the show ended on its third season was basically canceled and then years later was brought back for a fourth unfortunate season.
"Talented in a different way" That is a spot on assessment of the talent today. You see if flourishing on RU-vid even with oppressive censorship tactics.
Man In Living Color was hands down the funniest show back in the 90s SNL wasn't even close Mad TV tried but it was corny as hell to me that show could never be duplicated it would just be too difficult to remake that kind of GREATNESS period and Keenan knew it.
There was a short lived sketch comedy after ILC and before Mad TV, called the Edge. It had it's moments and I thought it was better than SNL also. A young Jennifer Aniston was part of the cast.
This show was lightning in a bottle. Trying to capture that a second time is basically impossible. The timing and the cast involved are what made it special and unique. Any attempts to make a new version would be futile. I mean even attempts like the mad TV reboot a few years ago in 2016 seem to be proof that sometimes things are better left in the past and enjoyed as they are. It's better to try something new Then to try to rely on nostalgia.
It's crazy how good this show was. I remember watching it as a kid, my buddies and I would make home movies doing In Living Color skits when we were barely 8 years old. Back then we thought the show was edgy and borderline HBO/Showtime levels of dirty, but comparing the show to today's over the top filth and total boringness, this show was downright wholesome! I loved every single cast member, and it's been a good 25+ years since I saw the show and am rediscovering it on RU-vid. Thank goodness for the internet, thank God for the Wayans'!
I agree with you! I grew up watching In Living Color every night, I think it was every Saturday night. I love it still today! There will never be a show that’s good like In Living Color. Great memories😊
You can't water down In Living Color. That's what made it an original, they weren't scared to push the envelope. So I feel where K.I.W is coming from. If you're not going to do it right, then don't do it at all.
Sad thing about what you're saying is that people from that generation are the same people who make everyone mad these days and hurt everyone's feelings. The majority of shows we considered great back then wouldn't be accepted today because of PC and having to not hurt people's feelings. It's a damn shame we can't have those shows again
I remember ILC back in the day, funniest damn show on tv, it was a sad day in tv history when it went off air. When Fox started screwing with Keenan, Homey should have went into the Fox board room and smacked an executive around saying, "Homey don't play dat!"
Loved this show. I’m 40 now so I was young when this came out. Absolutely loved it and looked forward to seeing it when it would come on. Back when television was fun.
One of the greatest sketch comedies ever, PERIOD! I stopped watching SNL when this show came out. It broke barriers! Sadly, this type of comedy would never be accepted today in 2019. This 'mamby pamby baby society' would have a huge hissy fit over it's content if it would showcase the same edgy humor it did back in the 90's. Thank you Keenan. I still think back and laugh to myself remembering funny sketch pieces that will forever live on in my mind.
THE best comedy sketch show ever. Yes, I said "EVER"!! ♡ Sunday evenings haven't been the same since. Married w/Children, The Simpsons, In Living Color... ♡♡♡♡♡
I along with my play cousins/high school mates,,,, will call one another just to make sure we were all watching,,,,, these three lineups on Sunday night,,,,, we laughed ourselves to sleep 😴,,, Waking up Monday morning 🌄 started all week fresh,,,,, man how we miss ,,,, the '90s school days 🏫💯(at McKinley tech).
Thank you for the video. I am now 48 years old and was a huge fan of ILC. I remember the excitement I felt each time I was about to watch it, you know, the butterflies in the stomach feeling. To this day, I look back and can't help but admire raw and creative talent of the Wayans brothers and the other cast members. It is a legendary show that not even SNL can match, ever. Thanks again for the video and be well. 💯💯💯💯💯
The usual suspects them dam whites always want to use someone control shit steal your ideas black people wake up i don't blame kennon for walking off he probably would rather die on his feet than live on his knees black people stop going to these white people for shit the end result is never good
I totally agree with not doing it again.. the times have Definitely changed. This new generation is way too sensitive to the days life situations and there would be massive amounts of protests over some of the shows contents. Things were different back then, the show could NEVER work in these days and times. So let it be...definitely missed but let it be.
Even the opening theme song says “You can do what you want to do In Living Color!” To have those douche bag producers dictate how things go and how sensitive it is to cause a controversy these days; kind defeats the purpose. So I’m glad they didn’t bring it back, because not being able to do what you want to do takes away the show’s identity.
J RLOC after the show blew they cherry picked all the talent. Keenan should have gotten a "finders fee" of 5%. Jamie, Jim, jennifer, david, tommy all have huge hollywood careers.
Michael Parylak and they nailed it in that half hour. I mean what other show was so awesome that they made the NFL reconfigure how they did their Super Bowl halftime show. Nobody watched the super bowl 26 halftime show because in living color did a special episode as a counter program. That forced the NFL to bring in Michael Jackson the next year to ward that kind of thing off.
Come up with something better? Not in the dainty era we're in. Too many people walking around with their feelings on the edge of their shirt-sleeves, just waiting to be offended so they can run to the gullible media and get their 5 minutes of fame. Comedy now is predictable and bland.
Not everything new and Current is better. You don't know what you're talking about. In this case, a Reboot would be great and the fans are asking for it.
Listen I own seasons of In Living Color. I'm not sure who gets the money from the sales but they are in Walmart! I love it still!!! And yes, Handiman and Men On Film are protests waiting to happen... Also that buff Jim Carey wrestler ladyboy...that's a protest waiting to happen too...
No they didn't, the wayans bros. Sold the rights to dimension films which in my opinion was a bad idea, the franchise went downhill after that 3, 4, 5, all sucked to me SM 1 & 2 Where the best ones that's what i have on dvd
ILC was the product of the perfect writers and performers coming together at precisely the right time. Attempts to recreate it would fail miserably. Let it stay an icon of the 90s.
In living Color was a fantastic show. Extremely funny and who poked fun at everyone and everything. Nothing was sacred! What I loved was how they would poke fun at the Black community just as much and vicious at white community. Equal opportunity insulters, lol way ahead of their time. I really miss the show. Daman Wayons was my favorite, but having Jim Carry too? In one show? Very very clever, funny and groundbreaking. When insulting group it was always done with humor not viciousness like SNL of today. Drop SNL and bring back ILC !
They cant bring ILC back. Because USA corporate media are trying to socialize men into becoming dress-wearing sensitive powderpuffs and ILC literally opposes that logic.
This is why you Black people fail. Always looking for some sort of conspiracy theory involving racism as an excuse for everything. There are plenty of successful Black people, but you still think you're fucking oppressed.
A reboot of In Living Color would never work in this triggered climate It's best to just leave well enough alone and just continue to enjoy the original
Facts!! They begged Larry David for years to reboot Curb Your Enthusiasm, which he did and without a doubt, 2-3 episodes in they started with the PC nonsense.
Riri Suds Yeah I remember that, they kept crying about how he was “harassing” people and how a bunch of a little things in the show were classist/racist. I was like, “You guys wanted it back, so here it is”
Just think: Sanford and Son and The Jeffersons. They could never survive today. Just the scene of a black man strutting into a high end high rise to the theme, 🎼"Well we're movin' on up..."🎶would start protests.
Keenan's right, these are very different times. People today are easily insulted, quick to protest. The Gay Trans a Pan community may not except the 90's style humor updated to todays standard!
Man you gotta learn how to say fuck them shit us blackfolks are allways the butt of every joke sence the beginning of comedy but we keep going they should take a joke as well
Can't recreate perfection. In Living Color was perfect for it's time. If it were rebooted it would not have that edge that made it great. Let's just enjoy the reruns.
Have them give us In Living Color uncensored. When it went into FX, that show was edited compared to what was originally shown when it first aired in the 90's. They might as well put it all out there or make it an online uncensored series.
Najee Nixon Idk, I was impressed by just how much this show “crossed the line” with barely any cussing. It could enhance or take away from the series, depending on how they use it.
In Living Color would never make it today because people turn everything into a cause and find everything offensive. Comedians will probably have no place in society in the near future. In Living Color was a great show and society today would never recognize that.
Black comedians will always have a place, they're the only ones that can make racial slurs and it's ok,if anyone else does it you all cry like babies so weak and sensitive.
@@jasonchandler2463 black comedians use racial euphemisms to make a point about society. Non-black comedians typically are lazy and just go for the personal insult. Plus non-black comedians are only there to sell imagery, not to bring out laughter. Major difference.
Jason Chandler so funny you say weak and sensitive because that’s exactly how whites guys act outside of talking shit online. Several times there’s been white boys that tried to act tough like they do online and they ended up weak and sensitive. Watch your words..
