Why India will be a close friend but not an ally of US, as Modi goes to America : Ashley Tellis 

Thank you Mr. Telles for clarifying the misconstrued inferences that interviewer Jyoti made from the title of the article. I am glad that India will stand her grounds and US will understand the constraints. India has its identity just as so many other countries do.

Jyoti conducts the interview as if she prepared only reading the title of issues she wanted to touch or worse someone else gave her the list of question.

Amazing clarity of thought Mr Ashley Tellis, I am impressed. He knows realities of India and expectations of US . He understands India is necessary for US interest in Asia to counter China despite having slightly different interests of both countries. He is clear that India is diversifying in defence equipment but can’t leave Russian equipment due to its scale of deployment.👍

The interviewer framed the questions so stupidly

Dr. Tellis is brilliant in his foresight. Understands India’s position and forewarns his own Government on the Whys and Wherefores of India’s position; which he finds eminently understandable. JM views and her attempting to put words into his mouth and corner him in some hypothetical situations just shows her political bias.

This was a wonderful interview with Dr Tellis, who knows what he is talking about , Jyoti. I must congratulate you. But I wonder two things 1. Why do you interrupt your guest so much 2. Why do you bring issues which have no relevance to the discussions ,for example a. The wrestlers stir in Delhi b. You, with all confidence, give a figure of Indian causalities in Galwan but mention only four casualties on Chinese side, even though, several global independent researchers confirmed that they had about 40 dead. Why not mention this, for the sake of record I always sense that you never miss an opportunity to needle India, perhaps, to keep your bosses happy

The ultimate objective of the US is to finally have India on its side if not a full fledged ally in it's struggle for dominance with China.. or else it would have never considered to transfer critical state of the art technologies like jet engines and so on.. US knows quite well that India regards China as an eternal enemy hence the right candidate for it's machinations against China... they have a clear road map in this regard.

Jyothi as usual acting as the Fifth column. "We know that 4 chinese died in Galwan"......that's Chinese BS. Indian estimate and ample evidence of the 'grave markings' show that at least 40 Chinese had died.

As usual - good old Jyoti still asking stupid questions of Ashley Tellis.

Brilliant discussion with Dr Tellis - he understands both the country's think-tanks perfectly. It is clear why India cannot be an ally with the US, as it cannot support all the adventures US does around the world excepting China. If US needs allies, India too needs allies. Taiwan is an important question, India cannot hide from that. Of course becoming an enemy of China is going to be very dangerous. IMO India must do everything it can to neutralize Chinese interference in South Asia.

I smiled when I saw the title with words 'bad bet on India'. Very cunning choice of words by the publisher. Because there is no way Ashley would ever advocate making a bad bet 😊👍

He is repeatedly saying that India is taking very strong and respectable positions in relationship with US. But she keeps on insisting that US should not respect India and giving tips on how they should corner Modi during US visit 😢😢

Jyoti was expecting the guest to jump at the questions and bring about a negative response from the US guest against India. But unfortunately she didn’t get him to bite. Better luck next time Joyti. Maybe try and change your own view and that might help you “cautiously” line up better questions.

Very pragmatic views from Ashley Tellis. At the same it is better Jyoti avoids few questions related to democracy. I feel some of the questions related to this are rather silly.

Ms. Jyoti you have headlined your article in the digital print version as “will India abandon…..and become a camp follower”. I feel it is a demeaning heading far from truth. You know it. Then why? Tailpiece: In life how you do it matters more than what you do. As a leading media person how you do it matters more than what you write.

Mr. Ashley is extremely informed and answers question with a lot of details and clarity. Should be interviewed more often while explaining US policy on other nations too.

1. He. He.. Jyoti gives it away when she asks what is operational collaboration!!! Or Will Biden ask Modi if we are allies or not?!!! or every time Jyoti says - it is no brainer....!!! But that is Jyoti we know! 2. Ashley is absolutely right in what he has stated in his article, however it was titled. But it makes a lot of sense for US to partner with India closely and hope that something happens by which India joins USA operationally!! Other way of putting it is this - India needs USA for defense equipment and technology to take on China on the land border as well in IOR region. But India will actively collaborate with USA in Indo Pacific but not for land border row. Also, India will not go against Russia, at least in foreseeable future or US adventures in Middle East or Central Asia!! 3. But one thing USA should appreciate and which Ashley does not talk about is this- India's rise is not going to threaten anyone, including USA. It will in fact, complement every country and support economic growth all around. 4. To summarize, this episode by Jyoti is a classic example of how not to ask questions on geostrategic issues and how to precisely formulate right answers to the wrong (or stupid!!!) questions asked!!! In particular, the last question asked by Jyoti was disastrous! Where is no space for dissent when any one can protest and make a nuisance of themselves for months together?

We need a talk between Ashley and Jaishankar - it will be epic especially if its an issue they disagree on

Awesome. Absolutely, India is in a difficult situation - as primary focus is on growth & development pulling its citizens from poverty. And protect its territory, engage in conflicts only if it must.

Good analysis, same question for Indians to ask: if India has a direct conflict with China, will US come to fight by India’s side? We will have the same expectation but US may not come to India’s aid. If US track record is anything to go by, they are likely to leave their friends high and dry!

The day USA takes a clear stand on Pakistan & Kashmir (non-ambiguous), you’ll see a totally different India. Currently, the majority of population who has read history books (and not those morally insinuating sanctimonious social media posts) will tend to have soft corner for the Russians & will remain cautious of Americans and their agenda. Crux: Take a clear stand on Kashmir and take all the love of Indians.

Awesome Dr. Tellis. Your 3 lines in the end were more telling than the entire interview. 1. There are marginal territorial boundaries movement (clearly insinuating the more than 2000 sqkms fresh occupation by the Chinese right inside Indian side of LAC). In fact you even framed it as a price to be offered for further non conflict. 2. US will not wash the (dirty) controversial linen in public, affirming to all the dirty linen of human rights violations/Kashmir/Press freedom/The Freedom reports/Protests/Media muzzle/Dissent/Wrestlers farmers etc that was said immediately before by the interviewer. 3. The world has changed. Classic statement that US interests will give Red Carpet welcome to the same person whom US denied visa entry for reasons of Gujarat 2002. Essentially affirming the principle that US can and will do exactly either of the things again, as and how it sees the “world changing again”

Why did Jyoti say "so-called" incursion? Had she said incursion as claimed by India but denied by Chinese, it would have sounded neutral. But by saying so-called, she actually toed the Chinese line. Why would she do that? Even in citing Chinese death toll in the 2020 Galwan clash, she just 4 Chinese deaths which is highly disputed across the world. A more neutral statement would have been at-least 4 Chinese casualties. I'm not sure how to assess these statements by Jyoti.

People expect relationship between India and USA as either black or white. In reality it is different shades of grey.

Modi should ask Biden “are you on my side?”. I am not sure why that hasn’t been brought up in this discussion. The day US divorces it’s relationship with Pakistan is the day when the US President can ask the Indian PM whether he is on US’s side. Until then, India will provide tacit support to the US based on specific issues.

India does not want to be a vassal like NATO like British empire days… that is Ashley’s pain..

If the US eventually appreciates that while India gravitates toward US India would make its own space, would the same apply to the transatlantic relationships that they would differ with the US on the China challenge ? Common enemies may make collaborators, not friends. Only shared values make friends. Transactional relationships are just that …… a strategic trade.

In short One can't change its Neighbour. And Indian very well aware how far and NO further USA came to aid when going gets tough.

America only sees Russian behavior as bad. Does it see in similar way Pakistan? I don't think so. Questions should have asked from both sides, it felt like some one from American think tank is asking why India is behaving like that.

The simple question is - would US's *decision makers* engage with India at the same scale if there was no US-China competition? Would the traditional biases against India (viz. Hindu civilizational innate capabilities) allow the cooperation?

If the tacit deal with US is for combat support during any conflict China, India may still join. India is more concerned about its relationship with Russia.

India will not provide combat troops to support the US in a Taiwan conflict and neither will the US provide combat troops to support India in a conflict in Arunachel Pradesh. The relationship will be mostly transactional based on self interest.

Jyoti uninterrupted doesn't mean frequently interrupting your guest!

This being the election year Modi ji will not and should not take such a drastic step of becoming an ally of America, which the opposition will, wrongly or rightly, use against him. Let Modi be elected for a third time then leisurely this matter may be taken up.

Why would India fight with US in the even of a Taiwan conflict; especially when Taiwan has traditionally also never recognized the McMohan line and considers Arunachal as a part of South Tibet.

Dr Tellis, I think you are not disclosing your "real" agenda. India will surely support even the military operations against China in case of defending Taiwan. But, your real question perhaps is whether India will support any hostile action against Russia to which the answer is a clear, resounding no. India is not joining a gang of goons where the boss-man has the final word on everything. In an alliance, all the partners must agree on the goals and the means to those. So, Instead of trying to drag India into the dimension which its common sense and self-interest will rebel against, why not discuss all these issues threadbare and not expect India to be a meek camp follower like many others? Finally, it should be understood that thankfully for India Modi is not and will never be a Zelensky.
