Welcome to our RU-vid video exploring the fascinating history of California City, CA! Situated in the Mojave Desert, this city has a captivating past that has shaped its unique character.
In the 1950s, real estate developer Nat Mendelsohn envisioned California City as a thriving metropolis, designed to rival Los Angeles in size and influence. He purchased the land, spanning over 200 square miles, with ambitious plans to create a master-planned community that would accommodate hundreds of thousands of residents. The city's intricate street layout, featuring wide boulevards and large residential areas, was meticulously designed to accommodate future growth.
However, despite high hopes and significant investments, California City did not achieve the envisioned population boom. Various factors, including the lack of major industries and the city's remote location, contributed to its slower growth than anticipated. Nevertheless, the city remains a testament to Mendelsohn's vision and an intriguing example of urban planning.
Join us as we delve into the captivating history of California City, delving into its origins, challenges, and the stories that have shaped its identity. Get ready to embark on a journey through time and gain a deeper understanding of this desert oasis.

I've been obsessed with this city for as long as I've known about it. Along with Salton City... Any place that goes to the trouble of laying out tens of thousands of housing lots and streets in the middle of nowhere in the hopes of attracting residents has always fascinated me. I'm from Alberta and we have our fair share of real estate ventures gone south too so I always find it interesting to see how and why some places boom while others flop... In the case of California City? I think it still has a really rosy future. It was just about 75 years ahead of its time. The air is cleaner in the Fremont Valley than in most of So Cal, the land is clearly dirt cheap, it has water resources to make a go of it and it's only a few miles from the California HSR line. If they could tap into that as well as extend the Metrolink Antelope Valley line a few stops North to California City as was proposed in a planning document from a few years back? The city might yet develop into the ULTIMATE RAILROAD SUBURB... Into downtown LA in under 45 minutes would totally be possible if they could just connect onto the HSR line from the Antelope Valley network at Lancaster for example... ;-)

If I were a modern land developer, I'd buy huge swaths of these and 3-D print concrete homes with solar roofs out there like Icon is doing in Austin. Clearly it's the best area for solar power in the USA and it's only a 90 minute drive from downtown LA... Here in Alberta that's the same as Red Deer to Edmonton or Calgary... That's an entirely doable commute for people looking to save on housing costs... And with prices being astronomical in LA, it makes sense to me for anyone to want to save some $ and move out to the Mojave. It just needs more local industry besides cannabis (yay!) and a closed private for profit prison (nay!) along with solar farms and a Hyundai test track... I mean it's next to Edwards AFB and the Mojave Spaceport so if you are in either industry? It would make sense to buy a place there! Not to mention for Snowbirds from Canada like me who want to buy cheap secondary places in the USA in places just as progressive as home. I.e. I can smoke cannabis in my backyard poolside and not be arrested...
