Well, I'll be damned, a foreign video describing in nuance and detail the internal problems in Israel. No bias, no arrogance, just facts. This is why I follow your channel. Actually you did a better job than the average Israeli news outlet in explaining the situation. Great job!

@@ycplum7062 Isn't the problem still they are biased by giving themselves a privalidge to having better knowledge of a group while they are not part of it themselves? The bias of soceity is fueled by majority opinions - which is a simplification and generalization of the real thing, fueled by the age they live in. In otherwords, the bias is that of , de facto, anachronistic interpretation of another group (also in the present with regards of values that are protected in history). One could ask... how is this ''progressive bias' different from idealistic populism? And what makes this new set of values more objectively true than that of the old?

16:42 A Haredi battalion exists, it's called Netzah Yehuda. Some literally call it "The Haredi Battalion". Otherwise positively surprised by the accuracy of this video. While there are very small inaccuracies in the beginning (e.g. Haredi parties are not growing in representation, contrary to the stated in the video), overall it's so much better than the last time that VisualPolitik went into this area and got practically everything wrong. Few points: 1) The Haredim (the citizens) wouldn't mind doing some kind of national service instead of military conscription (like religious girls do today), BUT, their rabbis forbid it since this would allow their followers to be exposed to the outside world and many would leave the Haredi bubble (as happened with European Jewry in the 19th century). 2) The Haredi men can't work (even if they want to) since they would officially lose their military draft deferment if they leave the yeshiva and get a job. Since the IDF doesn't really need (or want to deal with the special conditions of) Haredi soldiers, many Haredi men train in special courses (for Haredi only) to learn computer programming, law, and other profitable careers, while the army turns a blind eye. 3) Everyone (including the Haredim) know the current situation is untenable and want to see Haredi men enter the workforce and pay taxes. Unfortunately, until the army draft issue is resolved this can't happen (due to point 2 above). Making matters worse, there are 2 political parties (Lieberman and Lapid) that want to make political profit from the issue and make sure it can never be resolved with a compromise (see point 1).

They know that if their people get exposed to the real world, they will start leaving in droves. Which is why I find it shocking that secular, reform and conservative Israeli's, don't do their own missionary work so to speak, attempting to help Heredi leave the community and more so, promote their leaving the community, exposing them to modern ideas and knowledge. If the Christians can do it, and they do, in the thousands, I don't see why non-crazy, non-Orthodox aren't doing the same thing. They are the one's that really NEED to do this. There should be active programs that go out of their way to expose Heredim to modern knowledge. Especially as young adults. If this doesn't start occurring, there is a real threat in a few decades of Israel becoming a Heredi authoritarian state. And at that point, I could see WW3 kicking off. I wouldn't put it past them to knock down the golden dome and try to rebuild the 3rd temple. God forbid that temple ever gets rebuilt. It would be the worst day ever for Jews, Judaism, Israel and the world. The last thing Jews need now, as we are just getting on to our feet again, is the reestablishment of an antiquated theocracy, bringing back animal sacrifice and a disgusting social caste system, which is what Orthodox Judaism promotes, just as 2nd temple period was a Levitical caste system.... they would destroy Israel in the name of some fantasy of Hashem they have. Their arrogance knows no bounds. And they call everyone else arrogant. They think they understand the universe and the mind of Hashem with great certainty. They are the very definition of blind arrogance. But their numbers need to be reduced and soon.

Small anecdote: A small group of ex-Haredim tried to sue the country, because when they left the Haredi life behind, they found out that they were not equiped with the basic skills needed to join the secular work force. The Haredi women do learn math, english, computers and science in school, because they are expected to go out and earn a living to support their family. Haredi men are only expected to study the Torah and Talmud, and therefore ignorant in any other aspect. The secular part of Israel are fed up with the Haredim, because they do not pull their own weight.
@jessereichbach588
@jessereichbach588 Год назад
There needs to be way way more anti-Heredim missionary work. Just like there are those trying to deter Christian missionaries from converting Jews. They need to start "converting" Heredi to conservative, reform or just plain secular lifestyle. They need to start trying to reduce the size and growth of that community using education and information as much as possible. And Rabbinical power needs to be taken out of the hands of the Orthodox all together. They genuinely believe they are the only ones that count as actual "Jews", completely ignoring what the word actually means and the fact it has nothing to do with religion originally, as there was no formal religion. I mean, they still believe in full blown resurrection and magic. It's amazing that these folks got to decide who is and who is not Jewish and who gets to marry whom and other things like that. There are probably thousands if not millions of Jews who would have otherwise made Aliyah, if not for the Rabbinical tyranny in the government and outside of government. Seriously. I would have made Aliyah like 10-15 years ago if it weren't for that and a few similar issues. But I actually believe that separation of church and state, as we have in the US, better protects the rights of Jews and religious people, compared to the semi-theocratic state of Israel. Once you tie religion and government together, the religion can no longer be protected without becoming authoritarian in order to do so, as religious differences will cause schisms. And as we know in the religious world, sectarian infighting usually ends the same as cross-religious fighting. Shia and suni, Protestant and Catholic, Catholic and East Orthodox etc.... But making Israel a religiously Jewish state, you can no longer shield and separate Judaism from the responsibilities that come along with that. And thus at the end of the day, Judaism itself would be partly responsible for whatever the government does. And that just opens the door for a whole host of real life problems and possible religious war. So at the end of the day, Judaism itself would be better off if Israel detached itself from this Rabbincal element.

Israel is a very unique country. When I visited Israel 2 years ago, I stayed a week in Tel Aviv and a week in Jerusalem but I did day trips in different parts of the country. When I arrived in Tel Aviv I was very surprised how modern it is (except for the Jaffa district). The nightlife was insane I feel I was in NYC. Women were wearing shorts and tank tops and people very engaging. On the contrary Jerusalem which is only an hour away was like a different world. Very religious and conservative but I actually like Jerusalem, I don't think there's any other place in the world like Jerusalem. The markets are amazing. The fact that they are having exponentially more children than the rest of Israeli society is an enormous problem. I'm sure there are Christian missionaries waiting to pick of Heredim who are ready to fall, I just hope secular/reform/conservatives are doing the same. Really doesn't matter which direction they go in as long as it's not Heredi, fundamentalist Christian, Messianic or Islam. Shoot, I'm surprised the government isn't pumping secular information into the community through subtle and covert means. Like an actual attempt to at least "reform" if not secularize, as many of the young Heredim as possible. Because another few decades, they are really going to control the country and I'm afraid it might be too late then. GOd forbid that 3rd temple ever gets rebuilt. Heredi are crazy enough to do something like, that, something like removing the dome and rebuilding the "temple". IF that were to ever occur, that would be the worst day ever for Jews, Judaism, Israel and possibly the world. I'm pretty sure it would start WW3. But aside from that, it would, in the mind of all Orthodox and many conservative even, justify bringing back the completely disgusting and antiquated social caste and temple hierarchy, along with a silly monarchy. Not that it will be that easy for them to accomplish such things. But the more of them, the more likely something like that becomes. I men, they'd bring back actual animal sacrifice lol. The majority of Jews, and the majority of Israelis even, of which I believe constitute around 60% of the Israeli population are secular theist, secular atheist and reform, non-orthodox Muslim/Christian, need to actively influence Heredim to leave their cults. Like there should be a major anti-Heredi movement , just as there is an anti-Christian missionary movement. And it really doesn't matter if they become secular, reform, conservative, or full blown atheist after that. What matters is that they start adding people to the non-Heredi proportion of the population.

they should be separated because when they're not it creates antagonism towards religion and faith. this goes back to de Tocqueville and Israel is a good example of his theory/thesis (as is Iran apparently, if some unofficial polls are to be believed less than half the population now identifies as religious vs more the 90 percent before the Islamic revolution). however in Israel the separation is impossible and not really appropriate (saying this as a secular Israeli Jew). even the socialist founders of Israel made sure to write in our declaration of independence that this is the homeland of *Jews*. it's further made impossible by the fact that the conflict Israel has had with its neighbors and Palestinians also challenges this concept, making it not only an internal political issue but also one of foreign and even defense policy. in other words, if state and religion are separated, how is Israel the Jewish homeland except by virtue of (present) demography? this mirrors very much the issue with calls of federation or multi-ethnic state or single state - it inevitably means Israel loses (some/all) its Jewish identity and this defeats the purpose of Zionism. Israel/Zionism needs Judaism because it is defined by it and this definition became crucial once it was realized (it took a long time) that the Arabs in Mandatory Palestine or the surrounding Arab nations won't accept a state with this type of definition. they might have accepted a multi-ethnic state but not a state where Jews rule, they saw it as colonialism and many still do, so the very definition of Israel and what it has fought for over the years is at stake here, and that's why religion and state cannot be separated.

@@maayanmagal4629 once you start to unravel the thread you see these things are all intertwined and interlocked. if Israel separates religion from state - how does it answer fundamental questions such as - for example! - who can/should be conscripted? or how does Israeli supreme court defend the Allyia laws if Israel is another democracy? how can Israel keep functions as Zionism intends it, as a home *state* for Jews, if for example twenty years from now there's an Arab majority? to stay democratic Israel depends on demographics because otherwise this conflict becomes too great - but it's there even today when Jews are a large majority. i believe Ben Gurion already understood this and it's a big part of the reason he gave the ultra-orthodox the authority over birth, marriage and death of Jews in Israel. once you seperate the two it leads almost inevitably to an erosion in the Zionist goal as well. it puts Israel on a road to being a mutli-ethnic state. and the problem with that is it doesn't work - we have the best example of this bordering us to the north (but also in Iraq Lybia and elsewhere in the region).

Since I'm seeing some obnoxious comments about how religion is the problem here. As an Israeli, I can say categorically that the problem isn't "religion". There are far more "modern Orthodox" Jews in Israel than Haredi Jews. Modern Orthodox are also very religious, observe the Sabbath, have lots of kids, and keep kosher. But they still work, pay taxes, and serve in the military. In fact, they're often very enthusiastic about serving in the military, since they tend to be very patriotic! Haredim represent only one kind of religious Jewish practice, so the issue isn't "religion". It's ultra-Orthodoxy specifically.

I'm a secular Israeli, and this video is absolutely spot on. To say that the behavior of the Haredi community is infuriating for most Israelis is an understatement. Their political leadership consistantly makes it clear that their only loyalty is to advancing their own community's interests at the expense of the rest of the population and the state at large. If democratic Israel as we know it ceases to exist, it would probably be because of them. In everything they do, they march as one - to demonstrations, to events breaking COVID restrictions, and to the polls. Moreover, as the video showed effectively, with their birthrate being as it is, they will form an increasing share of Israeli society. The only hope I see for Israeli society in the future (except continuous, large scale immigration of secular Jews) is that I'd like to believe that the community will eventually become so big that the Rabbis would become unable to lock it out of modern society, and that more of them would secularize as a result of being exposed to the outside world. This could either happen relatively pleasantly due to the spread of technology, or very unpleasantly following a collapse of overstretched socioeconomic services. That said, much of the world is suffering from demographic woes, and the high haredi birthrate could have positive implications for the state (allowing for a large and young workforce) as much of the developed world ages.

Secular and non-Insane Israelis need to do anti-Heredi missionary work. The Christian fundamentalists are pushing their crazy missionaries everywhere, and they often feed on the distraught Heredi who want to leave the community. I don't know why secular Israelis don't have some program to de-Heredi as many people as they can. Protect them from the Christian missionaries and their Heredi Rabbi overlords. Those Rabbis are the most arrogant, most spurnfull of Hashem I have ever encountered. Their arrogance is extra disgusting as they claim to know the mind of Hashem with absolute certainty. Yet they call the rest of us "arrogant". They project their own arrogance on to everyone else. But there needs to be way more outreach for Heredi who are open to leaving the community. More programs to help integrate them into secular or at least conservative/reform society. if the Christians can do it, sending thousands of missionaries, to steal away not just distraught Heredi, but Israeli Jews of all variety, I don't see why secular, reform and conservative factions can't do the same. They are the only thing standing in between a future authoritarian Heredi state and the wonderful, Republic of semi-secular Israel. And obviously, the Orthodox Rabbinate has to go too. Or at least, Conservative and Reform need to be included in the Rabbinate.

Thank you for this video, its always nice to see one's own country though external eyes, a few anecdotes if i may (my opinions): 1. the Haredy population in israel is not homogeneous. there are quite a lot of sub fractions and a very small group is actually anti-israely, the anti-israely groups do not vote and have no actual representation in parliament (reference to the Neturei Carta sect). 2. the arab population is also not homogeneous, several groups like Druze, Cherquestic and Beduin communities do serve in the IL military. 3. the "enragement" of secular people about shabat restriction is often played up for election purposes. 4. the subsidies and exemptions that Haredy and arab large families get from the state is a bigger political issue. most people would like to see these two populations integrated into the general population as equally participating citizens. as i am a firm believer in equality before the law, i think that the only way forward is to abolish all exemptions that are group based. i hope i'm not alone thinking this.

Heredi are rude, treat non Jews offensively, and treat non Heredi Jews almost as offensively. They are arrogant, not humble as they pretend, but the exact opposite. It's always funny when they claim that the secular world is arrogant when they are the one's claiming to know, with certainty, the nature of God, the exact history of the Jews/Israelites, and to know with certainty that things like resurrection exist.... which, I would have to define is INSANE. Like actually delusional and insane. But that's what happens I guess when you get no real education to speak of outside of the mythological book that they believe to be the divine word of Hashem. Which is of course, ridiculous. I think often, Jews are more embarrassed and ashamed of Heredi than anything else. There are already several haredi battalions (netzach Yehuda, Chardi Tzanchanim and others) And have existed for over 20 years. The issue is more that anyone signed up as learning in yeshivah doesn't have to go to the army. But there are haredim that are not signed up as learning in yeshivah and do do military service. That is also a driving force for the low employment numbers, with any working haredim requiring prior military service many avoide being signed up as working even if they are. There are also many sub-groups within the haredi community. As you mentioned there are two haredi political parties. But most of the people involved in the anti government riots don't vote at all (they don't want a part in the Zionist entity prior to the Messiah arriving) Either way a complicated issue and your broad brush strokes were generally in the right direction. I love the holy land and its different cultural, religious and historical sites. Such a vast array of overlapping places to visit. Been there many times. PS! Visualpolitik team - please turn down the music between the talking segments. When listening from large speakers at night then the music is so loud compared to the voice and it feels like Im having a party,. My wife can sleep trough it but my downstairs neighbours sure ain't happy about it. These things should be in more balance, Whoever is doing the sound then should turn it down a notch and make it match with the talking part better.

One mistake to correct, it is not true that Israeli Arabs are discouraged from being in the IDF. If I recall correctly, there is even a unit comprised of Israeli Arabs. Considering the enemies, they actually have a special skill set that many Israelis don't have. There is many Israeli Arabs who are more than happy to serve in the IDF...

In general your video is truthful, but lacks some nuances: haredi community consist of multiple parts. While some of them are anti-zionist, others serve in the army. And not all other Israeli Jews are secular. There's entire spectrum of in-between grades of religious observance. I'm secular (hilony) btw, but my college is observant non-haredi for example

I am Israeli and I must compliment Visualpolitics for an excellent video: good research , deep analysis and the message is not biased to any side. Well done! It is clear to me personally that the existing situation that such a huge population is being educated in complete ignorance about what is happening in the modern world will blow up in the face of the the ultra-Orthodox community sooner or later.

My Palestinian friend had his front teeth knocked out by a rifle butt at an IDF checkpoint. Of the 4 soldiers present, 2 were Druze and 2 were Bedouin. The 4 four soldiers and my friend were all Muslim. Bedouins have a long history of being oppressed by the broader Palestinian population, many of whom refer to Bedouins as ‘peasants.’ Conversely, I’ve met a Druze man who got a doctor to write an exemption from conscription on mental health grounds because he does not support the state of Israel. Interestingly, when I studied at Tel Aviv university I noticed that Druze students tended to socialise more with ‘Arab-Israeli’ (note: most of them identify as Palestinian) students. My point is, Israel is a clusterfuck that very few outsiders can comprehend.

Religious extremism is dangerous, regardless of faith. It will have to be dealt with eventually. If there is a way to negotiate a way for them to practice their faith privately without infringing on others in the public space that would be best. We cannot ever repeat history. But that includes not allowing a situation where non-extremists carry the societal burdens that allow a society to thrive-taxes and service, for example. Whether anyone likes it or not, coexistence is the only viable option, and that requires acceptance and collaboration. We can start with tolerance and cooperation, but that will only go so far and last so long.

From someone to've actually live in Israel and understand it fairly well..... Oh boy..... So many mistakes and inaccuracies For the most part it's spot on But.... Common such simple such obvious mistakes that minimal research should've fixed... Such as the fact that Israel doesn't have a constitution There are "hukey yesod" -"base laws" / ground rules so to speak... Basics around which the legal system acts basically like a constitution but there's nothing solid (and well the situation with the milatery is a bit more complex then that many do argue that they would join the army in some circumstances such as a war (since the tora very much allows and tells the stories of wars..)but require a ton of privileges such as kosher food separation of woman and so on)

I am from Iraq and for a long time we didn't get an accurate image of Israel because the regime labeled them enemies/the other just like their government used us as the other, easier to focus and unite your people when you have an "other" to hate on, well when i talked and played games with many Israelies through MMO games they blew my mind, there are a lot of things which we didn't know about each other, and we have many similarities. One of them told me about the Orthodox Jews but i thought he was exaggerating, well i guess not lol.

Just a quick correction: the Arab population in Israel does not serve in the military because the government recognises that they might feel conflicted loyalties in a conflict with the neighbours. Arabs can and do volunteer to serve.

There are some relatively minor mistakes in the video. For one, Arabs can volunteer military service, it's not like they are banned from doing so. In fact, the Druz community leadership has requested back in the 50's or 60's to make conscription mandatory for them as well (men only) and it's been since. The Bedouin minority also often volunteer for military service. The other thing is that there is already an Ultra orthodox battalion, the Netzah Yehuda Battalion. Personally I think the idea of arming people, who put the Bible above the rule of law, is deeply flawed and it's only a matter of time until it backfires. I don't care if they serve or not I just want them to stop sitting on their asses debating the Bible and go out and work and be at least somewhat productive members of society. Ps. The K in Knesset is not silent.
