In response to a viewer question, I discuss the reasons why Doctors are pushing statins despite their low effectiveness in preventing cardiovascular events.
Note: at around 6:15 I said "half of the bonus payments." I should have said "half of the medicine-related bonus payments" to be clearer.

@@loriru3135 Since hypertension is predominantly a disease of the elderly, and since everyone who survives with hypertension will eventually be elderly, I prefer to start treatment with the drug that is safest for the elderly. That drug would be a beta-blocker. Lisinopril is not on the Beers Criteria list of drugs contraindicated in geriatric patients, but the beta-blockers have a better safety profile. Hypertension is a major clinical risk factor for heart disease and stroke. I do not think there is much disagreement on the need to treat hypertension. Lisinopril is not an unreasonable choice and I would use it if a second agent was needed. In any individual case with any drug, it is important to make sure that it does not have a significant interaction with other drugs being taken and that the patient does not have a contraindication or an allergy to that drug.

@@dpasek1 »Chronic hyperinsulinemia is the major contributor to CVD, not "hypercholesterolemia".« That is incorrect: ] 1) hyperinsulinaemia is the primary cause of CVD, not just a "major contributor", 2) hyperinsulinaemis is ALSO the primary cause of what is called "atherogenic dyslipidaemia" (high LDL-C, low HDL-C, high TG). It is because hyperinsulinaemia causes rapid aging of mitochondria (through various mechanisms, the most important being the suppression of mitophagy). If mitochondria in the hepatocytes are unable to burn the substrate for energy because of this, it will spill out a large amount of citrate (through the "citrate shuttle") which then gets converted both into triglycerides and cholester and most of it exported out of the liver as (V)LDL into the blood stream...

@jamescalifornia2964 Yes, while niacin can lower cholesterol levels, one must be careful with it as too much of it has been shown to do damage. Personally, I have no desire to lower my cholesterol because it is used to repair everything within the body. It is used extensively in the brain 🧠. My concern is the arteries themselves, and to repair them, they need vast amounts of Vitamin C. As Dr. Linus Pauling has suggested. With his protocol, I am successfully doing that as verified by CAC. A Coronary Artery Calcium score is the only thing that verifies what you are doing is successful, IMO. Anything else is a guess!

I recall when, not so long ago, a cholestrol number of 300 was considered the normal. After statins were developed someone changed the cholesterol number to 200 and if the number is higher than 200, docs began prescribing statins. There was money out of the wazoo to be made and those numbers were lowered to make it.

I had terrible side effects from Statins so I stopped taking them. Then my Doc put me on Repatha and told me it wasn’t a Statin so I wouldn’t have any problems only I did. Both times the doctor told me that the side effects I experienced were not due to these medications, but when I stopped taking them, the side effects went away. I recently noticed that when I refuse to take a medication, the doctor makes a note in my chart that I’m non compliant. While I appreciate that they have gone to school and may know more than me about medical conditions, that does not mean I’m going to just blindly accept what they tell me. I’m going to do my own research, ask questions, and make my own decisions about my health.

The doctor is correct that Repatha is not a statin. However, if the adverse effects you experienced were from the resulting low cholesterol, you'd still have them. I was never on Repatha (a PCSK9 inhibitor), but I was on Zetia (also not a statin) and had the same experience.

@@mystatinfreelife My best friend was also put on Repatha and tried to tell me it was all in my head and told me to stop Googling these drugs, then he began to have the same issues. It has taken almost 6 months for him to start feeling better since he stopped taking the drug the second time. I have lost all trust in the medical community & Big Pharma. No filthy lucre for PigFarma to wallow in if nobody takes their drugs. People get hooked on the notion that without keeping the polypharmacy going in their lives they are going to die. Meanwhile, each drug they take has its own side effects and interacts with all the other drugs the patients are taking, for which the medical/pharmaceutical cartel has them convinced that the solution is to take yet MORE drugs to allegedly get rid of the new symptoms caused by the ones they are already taking....

People assume that statins have 1% of benefit in a lifetime, but this a based on big pharma studies. Because if there were independent studies that number would be 0.0%. And if you add statin-diabetes, depletion of coq10 and k2, muscle pain and weakness, these cause premature death which are not recorded as statin death victims.

At 3,000 patients a doctor spends 45 minutes a year in the presence of a patient? Those patients are lucky. During my two visits a year the doctor may be in the room with me 5-6 minutes. After a quick hello, he mostly talks to his laptop. At the end of the visit he rushes me in for a blood draw. I get a terse statement when the results come in: "labs look good, no change in med." Or "Numbers a bit high/low, changing dose, script sent to pharmacy." Discuss the labs with a patient? That's so 2010.

I read the Cholesterol Myth, I read it about ten years ago. The book was and is an eye opener. My GP has tried three times to prescribe them to me over the last 10 years, each time I mention the diminishing returns and the circumstances in which they should be prescribed and the GP’s they stop talking and usher me out. I think I am on a naughty list at my doctors!. The current intel suggests that surgeries get approximately 11 to 15% of their funding via the NHS to prescribe statins. I think when the US medical association 35years ago come up with the concept of Statins, we just followed suit as country. I think NHS England started out with the right intentions but it appears to have just been left to continue to supply an ineffective drug. For every action their is a reaction, so the vast number of Statins being prescribed must be having an effect on society, the side effects of reducing cholesterol is now be recognised and the rise in other illnesses may start to be associated to the reduction in cholesterol. Read the book, some of it is beyond what I would accept as reasonable but a lot of it fact based and appears unbiased and non partisan.

Wow, ran across this by accident but how timely. I could give you a long story about doing my own lengthy research on statins but I will spare you the details. I had ALL the cholesterol blood tests done including Apo(a), ApoB, CAC and, of course the normal CBC. I hit a moderately high LDL and my GP wanted me to see a cardiologist. That is when I convinced her to prescribe those more advanced tests. She referred me to the cardiologist because I refused a statin. Well, I saw this rather arrogant cardiologist who did a resting EKG. Looked at my LDL and said "you need to be on a statin." I said I choose not to and tried to show him my advanced blood work (which he did not have a copy of for some reason). He stated he didn't need to see any of that----- the LDL number tells me all I need to know. You need to be on a statin. I again said no and gave him my reasoning. He laughed a belly laugh in my face and said so I guess you know more than I. I told him that through the research I had done I have decided I will not take a statin. He was angry and dismissive. He asked if I would do a nuclear stress test. I said I would. I completed it. The report essentially said there were no problems with a normal stress test and heart function. Personally, I'll bet he was disappointed. I think he already had a tentative appointment made for the cath lab. I am supposed to see him in a year. Not sure I am going to.

I read that adult onset dementia has increased 228% since the introduction of statins. I do not know what strength the statins (were and are) over that time frame. I do know that cholesterol is a building block for cell membrane (only in every cell) and accounts for a very significant percentage (neurons and nerve cell structure) of that fancy organ between one's ears. If foreign cholesterol corrupts that process dementia can occur along with other side effects elsewhere and is compounded by lifestyle. My paternal grandfather died of a heart attack while walking to work. He was a pharmacist and passed at age 33 (1926), my father died of a heart attack at age 60 getting dressed to be released from the hospital. He had severe edema. Mom made it to 93 and I would not want the last 10 years. I am 73, very active and am commonly confused for 60 years old. When I fill out the form as a new patient that history comes up and Statins are prescribed. I have refused every time by reciting a poem: " I realize that I will die and likewise so will you Along with those we've learned to love and those we never knew So live each day the best you can remember this all started at the moment of our birth" Everyone's liver produces cholesterol I and remember seeing diagrams (late 50s) of arterial blockage describing cholesterol buildup inside arteries near the heart and was the primary "suspect" for the cause of the heart attack. Now the claim is the cholesterol is at those sites needing repair and cholesterol is the bodies "band aid". Your doctor is only practicing medicine and the lawyers are only practicing law.

I am in free fall totally confused about the lies. My parents both died of heart attacks and I had my first one in April 2021. A stent was inserted and I had a video call with a prominent heart specialist in London whose research suggested little to no benefit from Statins. A concerted effort was made to get me on them. Now as of May 2024 a second heart attack. My stent was severely compromised with clots. 3 more stents used and immediately put on 80mg of Atorvastatin. I am completely confused and have lost trust in the medical profession. I spoke of the prominent heart specialist to another cardiologist while in hospital and he was scathing about the other consultant. During ward rounds another consultant brought up the “Do not resuscitate “ notice that I should put on my file. I asked him why are you bringing this up now? The UK NHS is more interested than killing people off instead of being focused on true health and wellbeing. I’ve survived cancer, double pneumonia, two heart attacks and loss of my independence after Covid complications. I’m tired and just want a peaceful dignified death.

Sorry to hear all you've had to deal with. The medical profession does seem to be at a state where care for trauma - accidents, etc. - is very good but it seems to be lacking when it comes to chronic care. So doctors latch onto statins as wonder-drugs when they're not really. Statistically they may reduce cardiovascular events in a small number of patients while the rest suffer from them (or at most, get no benefit.) I tend to agree with the prominent heart specialist who said that they provide limited benefits. This video from Ford Brewer may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s9W7Skfb8Qw.html

I lift weights 4 times a week and walk about 4.5 to 5 miles a day. Over subscription of medicines by doctors is out of control in this country.

I have to disagree with the phrase "with the exception that my cholesterol is 220 (mg/dL)" (that's 5.7 nmol/L for those viewers using that unit). The idea that 220 mg/dL is not healthy is medical system propaganda. All-cause mortality, according to several very large studies, is at its lowest for patients with that level. That doesn't mean it should be anybody's goal in particular to have that level, but if that's what you have naturally, then you're in fine condition.

.8-3.0 percent here - My doc said mine is 25%. I trust He is saying what He believes to be true. If I could understand what the real number is I could make a decision. No one I have talked to yet understands what the real risk reduction is.

Statins ruined my quality life. 3xCABG 2011 at age 53 and put on statins afterwards. 2012 I m complaining to cardiologists that I have SEVERE cramping and spasms doing anything, even petting my cat. Went thru all 3 different statins b4 they finally confirmed I was statin intolerant in 2018. Damage already done and short term memory totally shot since the cabg. Drs were playing around with my chol numbers years ago, seeing if they could get me under 100 total chol. like it was a game. Now Drs are finally acknowledging (some anyway) that a good portion (20%+) of people are statin intolerant, like I was complaining about 12 years ago.

Wow, trying to get total C under 100 mg/dL seems criminally negligent to me. I wish more doctors would take adverse effects more seriously. I still have memory problems after six years off them, but it gets better with every passing year.

Many people have adverse reactions to statins. Symptoms can include muscle pain, muscle spasms, skin rash, cognitive impairment, increased risk of diabetes. So can doctors be sued for these adverse events when they prescribe statins?
@mystatinfreelife
@mystatinfreelife 2 месяца назад
I suppose that if the adverse effect was never disclosed beforehand and could be proven to have caused an injury and had been ignored by the doctor afterwards, there could be a case. Certainly, for example, rhabdomyolysis could fall in that category. However, my pseudo legal training is limited to reading software contracts. Not much help there!

Good question! Seems like it would be difficult to prove in court that adverse reactions were caused by statins, even when it's true!

There cannot be many medications that have no side effects at all associated with them...why pick on statins? 80 percent of patients on them report no adverse side effects at all.
@maryrenaud6732
@maryrenaud6732 Месяц назад
The issue is the FAILURE to disclose known adverse events when prescribing ANY DRUG or VACCINE. We never receive informed consent from doctors. They should give everyone a complete copy of the drug package insert as a standard part of medical practice. REFUSE or DELAY all treatments until you have a chance to get and review this information for all prescriptions or treatments. As vaccines are given in the Doctor’s office, ask for the insert and take home to review and yellow highlight the reactions before you consent. Personally, after reading many books on vaccines, I realize these can be extremely toxic to the brain and body, increase your chance of catching related viruses, and the ‘safe and effective’ mantra is a marketing slogan not a scientific one. I politely say ‘NO Thanks’ to all vaccines. I am 73, healthy, take a lot of vitamins and minerals, and only go to my doc for thyroid bloodwork.

Doctors have thousands of patients. You only have one. Thats why you are allowed to chose for yourself, and take another perspective. Statin sideeffects harmed me and made my life miserable for years. As you may know the HMG-coa enzyme is responsible for several processes in every cell in your body. All 20 enzymes in your body, are there for a reason. A good reason. Surpressing one of them will of course have implications. In the statin lottery I might have won a few weeks extra lifetime. Odds are not that well is it? The industry uses fear to sell you this product for the rest of your life. Your doctor fears to get punished, if she doesnt follow the guidelines, and if you put trust in your GP you may believe you will die, if you are not taking the drug.

I had severe constipation when I took statins. Second side effect was the inability to achieve orgasm but I never told my doctor about this side effect. Stopped taking them after a couple of months. Doctor kicked me out of his practise. Note: orgasm returned two weeks after I stopped taking them. Read online that statins eventually destroy ability for orgasm permanently.

So, I buy my statins but I don’t take them. I don’t even bother to tell my doctor that I do t take them. If I tell my doctor, can they drop me? I did ask her why half the people coming in with heart atta is don’t have high cholesterol. I asked her the second risk factor. Blood clots. I asked if ok to take baby aspirin. She said yes. Not that I wanted or needed her redo, I was just trying to be polite and cooperative. In reality, I don’t give a darn about the lipid hypothesis, and I resent that they are not required to do an advanced lipid panel (MNR) not do,they eat for brain sterol in elderly on statins. Personally, my healthcare is just a pain in the. It monthly payment. I hate this. There are so many stupid things in this country, but this is an expensive one. I also see my peers go on these drugs and their blood sugar goes up. Then they get more meds, yet they feel like crap.

There is one benefit to health insurance: OOP (annual out of pocket limit). The insurance company pays every medical and Rx bill after you have reached your OOP. If you have sufficient inexpensive injuries/illnesses in a year or have a sufficiently expensive injury/illness in a year, the OOP prevents you from going bankrupt or from having a bill that you will be paying on for the rest of your life.
