Shoutout RDC... can't wait to go back to school tbh... things get boring at home.... anyways in terms of videos this week I'm going back to back soon... cole fans might hate this one but maybe they love it.
Something about Cole’s music just captures fans in a way other artists can’t. You either gravitate towards it or you don’t, but you can’t deny the passion he has for the game. Best part about it all is his run isn’t over… It’s A Boy January 28 🙏
I was really falling off with J Cole until The Off-Season, but I gotta be honest Johnny P’s Caddy is what reinvented my love for his craft. His verse is just transcendent.
Cole leveled up approaching Off Season and So on. He realized he needed to stop tryna Play it safe and flexing sometimes is coo. His rhyme and flow approach changed, I believe he got a lil advice from some in his camp (JID).
i think 4 your eyez only is definitely an important, unique piece of hip-hop. it's for the better that he's switchin things up, but u can't deny how impressive it is that cole can make an album that mainly focuses in lyrically, and still go platinum and be critically acclaimed by many. it's personally one of my fav albums of all time and i'm glad it exists the way it does.
Just the other day I asked my ups driver if he preferred Kdot or Cole and he said Cole. I asked why and he said Cole was more relatable and wasn’t always in poetry mode. Cole is legendary.
Benny made a mention of the lack of energy in J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only. Now, this is one of my favorite albums by J. Cole because of this, because it illustrates how normal this man’s life really is. Despite living through the death of friends, his fatherhood fatherhood and his incarceration, the man in the story lives a life that is normal to many people in the demographics of the story. It is the story of a common black man, similar to The College Dropout and good kid, m.A.A.d. city. But instead of the youthful humor and naïveté of these stories, J. Cole’s character was more mature and a lot darker. So a lack of energy did not, in my opinion, take away from the power of 4YEO.
The song 4YEO is an all-time classic. One of the best storytelling songs ever, portraying itself as a song by a man afraid of death recording it to play to his daughter if he does die.
I think in the current music climate it would be next to impossible for an artist to release an album with zero features and for it to do as well as Cole did, it’s massively impressive. Still glad he did decide to change it up tho Great vid
For Your Eyez Only is a great album. Music is subjective and of course, you don't have to like it. IMO it takes a more mature approach to life and themes around it. It very well encapsulates the growth of Cole not musically, but also as a person.
Cole is one of the greatest lyricist to ever live, he just so happens to live in the mumble rap and tiktok era unfortunately, so it's expected for his music to not be received well by the younger crowd's and called boring 💯💯🤦🏽♂️
@@endrykperez412 if his music was great,it would stand out over the noise; especially to old an new heads who want to listen rap-rap. Cole is super popular and successful,so to say this period of time is holding him back is a silly take!
@@KingBennyWhy? Lmao all my friends be listening to the trash artists like yeat and playboi and nle choppa and stuff. The new generation has been accustomed to have short attention spans so that they cant appreciate proper music as it is. If i were to make any of the kids at my school listen to 2014 rn i swear they would not like it because their taste has been accustomed.
There's a certain vibe to a lot of J. Cole's music that I'm really gravitated to. If I were to describe it, his music has this "freshness" to it. It's like if the carefree, cool kid in school who plays sports was turned into music. I don't know how to describe it, but he has a really distinct vibe that I adore. I can only describe it as "fresh", that's all I can say.
While im not the biggest fan of j cole and at some times he can be a little corny and preachy, boring is the very last word i would use to describe him. hes talented without a doubt and has made some fantastic albums, a few of which are some personal favorites of mine
@@KingBennyhe biggest thing that keeps him from being boring for me is absolutely his production. Just based off of 2014 FHD, you have january 28, 03’ adolescence, a tale of 2 citiez, st. tropez (my personal fav), GOMD, no role modelz, and apparently, all with unique and engaging beats that cole definitely fits well on with his flow. Edit: also wet dreamz
@@KingBenny I’m a former Cole Stan, and even I can admit he has gotten a bit boring. That’s for many reasons though. He also doesn’t exactly have a classic,Friday night lights probably still his best body of work and that’s sad when you think about it!
the first time I heard the line "who ever thought I saw the day I'm drinking ALMOND MILK" my brain totally shifted. I bought 4 your eyez only when it came out but I wasn't into hip-hop in general at the time so I didn't know that it was controversial but I did feel the decline with his sound with KOD
I think he's going to have a change of pace, with the off-season, possibly this year with "It's a boy" and The fall-off, he probably planned a sort of "trilogy" of him mostly abandoning conceptuality and starting to focus on the lyrical and production part even more. He released a song called procrastination a couple of hours ago and he said that he's feeling uninspired because it's a lot of pressure on his shoulders. But I think we should have faith in him because he has a lot of skill and he definitely got wiser in those years, I hope that with the next album people will fell in love again with his craft
4 your eyes only is my favourite album of all time cuz I’ve got a personal connection with it, but I’m never gonna go round telling everyone that it is objectively the best. We all got our own opinions man
J Cole is a top tire rapper and underrated producer. He will be up with greatest when the show is over. We all know that deep down, the one who know real hip hop al least. K Dot is his twin brother in his own world, just as great.
I think in times to come FYEO and KOD will be greater appreciated especially when people start reflecting back on how life was in the years those albums came out. They will realize they are time capsules and great slice of life commentary. But if you’re looking for a vibe, a feel good, to dance, or even something to blast while your cruising, you won’t like those two albums much but when you’re in a reflective space you will appreciate them more.
I’m a fan of the big 3 and I have to say Cole is number 1 right now. Drake completely watered down his music besides a few songs here or there, and Kendrick last album doesn’t warrant a long wait. Cole can solidify that spot with this new project he’s hinting towards.
I strongly disagree with your assessment about 4YEO only having lyrics as its' selling point. I think it features some of the best production in Cole's catalogue. The beats aren't straight up hip hop beats that have a heavy focus on the hip hop production fundamentals like hi-hats and heavy bass. The production is unique, melodic, beautiful, and jazzy. Instrumentals like For Whom The Bell Tolls, Immortal, Ville Mentality, Change, Neighbors, and 4 Your Eyez Only are my favorites in that aspect. It's not an album meant to be digested casually or everyday and I love that. Cole easily could have come out and made a album similar to 2014 FHD and everybody would be happy. Instead, he pushed himself creatively and artistically. He took a big risk and it's the kind of risk more artists could take. I respect your opinions though. Great video! Loved how it was edited and put together.
@@KingBenny I didn’t say that you said the beats were bad? I was just talking about the production and how i believed you and many others overlook it. The beats don’t appeal to the mainstream and so some people won’t fuck with it which is u fortunate. I love the album though and think it’s top 2 of his catalogue.
Dope vid. New Cole fan myself (like last summer new) and FYE is my fave of his personally. Love the vibe and emotion; helps that it helped me through some tuff times
4 your eyez only has 3 songs that if you even half pay attention are absolutely poetic and fire, “Change” and “She’s mine pt.1” and “she’s mine pt.2” u gotta give ‘em a listen, imo either of the she’s mine songs are equal or better than songs like mockingbird by Eminem
I see where you're coming from when you say most of the beats are too laid back and the lyrics aren't enough to keep you engaged, but when the beat starts playing for Ville Mentality, Change, and Foldin Clothes I just start groovin fr bro. Ik I be meat munchin Cole a lot, but I can't stand for the 4YEO slander. Great video/production quality tho bro, can't believe you only have 18.4k.
I do think the lyrics are engaging, don't get me wrong, but it just lets me feeling like the album is like a 7 when it could be a 10 (and sometimes in listening it does feel like a 10 but it isn't consistently a 10 if that makes any sense) and if you do listen to the album consistently and you're like me, the lyrics are cool but you wish he'd do more with the sounds on the album which are great just not for a hip hop album I guess. He should've had Danger Mouse working on it. Also yeah... I'm happy having 18k ngl... its pretty cool, 2 months ago I was sitting at 2k subs
@@KingBenny Yeah I understand what you're saying. And oh yeah 100%, I don't mean to undermine your success, I'm just surprised you're not even more successful If you get what I'm sayin' lol.
I just feel like hip-hop has become too critical like whenever I say I think J. Cole is the greatest rapper ever there is always a flock of people that have to say why my opinion is wrong like damn just let me like the music i like
as a cole fan i know that we're annoying to a degree but tbh what makes me go defensive mode sometimes is how much kendrick fans feel the need to shit on cole out of nowhere whenever they hear his name. i would say the his name and someone across the room would come just to tell me how kendrick is better
Now, I listen to J Cole ALOT. He is one of my favorite artists, and I can see why so many people didn't like 4 your eyes only or his music in general. You basically summed that up in the video but yeah.. basically there are alot of people who hate him and think he is corny or boring and that's fine! Everyone can hate or love what they want but I feel like something of the hate is unwarranted. The people who hate his music are likely people who like hype music or bangers so to speak. The thing is alot of J Coles music goes over peoples heads and thats why I honestly find it kind of laughable because there so oblivious or they don't even take the time to absorb the music or the lyrics. Like for example, everybody hated the song "Foldin Clothes" but that song actually had a much deeper meaning especially at the end which alot of people didn't catch. I won't get too much into that but that is just one of the examples. If J Cole still being relevant after almost a decade and more isn't a sign that he is worthy of being considered a hip hop legend then I don't know what to tell anybody 🤷
@808NASTY fr people that like hype songs are the ones that don't fw cole like that, you hear them say coles best verse is his a lot verse with 21 savage, lol
I can see if you're a fan of the story personally its just that I can't listen to the album more than like once every other week, so I don't rank it as highly
He gets called preachy but their is rapper after rapper releasing song after song about drugs, violence and money and it may be a different type of preaching, preaching negativity. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy gangsta shit too but its nice to have a bit of positivity corny or not.
Idk... FHD is cool but I feel it's a little dated. It's not terribly dated but it's notable for me. Maybe someday I'll be nostalgic for that sound and it works better tho
I thought the same but went back and listened again and can assure you that it isn’t at all dated and is a brilliant project. There’s a reason No Role Modelz has over a billion streams.
I feel like Cole can make great singles but when he must make his own album most don't hit the mark. If we remove 2014 most of his albums aren't the type you listen to all the way through.
@@Gintoki_Madao My comment wasn't on his best album but how when you take his entire catalog into account not all of them are great. Thing is most songs that are people's favourites are from 2014 Forest Hills hence I used it as an example.
At the end of the day, opinions are just opinions, they aren't always necessarily facts and you can't force your opinions on people. I fuck with Cole's music and that's it. The hiphop community has always been competitive and a lot of projects have never been really appreciated.
4 your eyez only is about blackness. The story just aids in explaining parts of blackness. Once you see it through this lens, it becomes cohesive. That is why songs like neighbors, folding clothes fit into the album.
It’s crazy because he clearly tells y’all he is a guy that wants to master things and not look back and think did he give it his all. So when murders his albums people still criticize. Well can he hold his own with features! Bull crap. Now he goes and murders features with huge artist and now it’s well he didn’t do it before. I’ve come to realize that people just want to criticize.
I always try to show my personality just cause its what makes me different... but sometimes it can feel like I'm leaning a little heavy into biases. Thanks btw! Happy you enjoyed
I don't think he needs to abandon the conceptuality tbh. I think that he needs to find a balance for sure, but he definitely shouldn't discard that part of him
I don’t think I overate j Cole but I hardly talk about him and I saw some of my friends saying that he sucked and was genuinely just confused cause i usually talk about how much I love Kanye music and not other rappers but like I fw j Cole and was genuinely confused on why someone would hate him
I feel he way in which you consume an album matters in the way you interpret it. If I were to listen to a House song in class, it might seem repetitive & annoying. Simply because I'm not dancing or in the mood to do such things. Same with vulgar songs in genres like Soca, Dancehall, and Hiphop. Some want to get hype, and others want to chill. Some want to lament past relationships, and others want to praise their god(s).
I wouldn’t say overhated tbh. Yeah if you go deep into the hip hop community he isn’t as well liked but honestly I’d say his overall reception is fair.
J.cole the best rapper out beautiful bodies of work he’s just different man fairly consistent ik his music is for everyone but i can’t say I understand how you still can’t call him great
There are many active mcs that are better then Cole like Joey bada$$ Denzel Curry JID Freddie Gibbs Pusha t Ransom Earl sweatshirt Vince Staples Roc Marciano Ka
The only artist I listen to more than J Cole is Kendrick Lamar. Who gonna replace these two legends? Lil Baby, Roddy Rich, and more are hot but don't have nearly enough bars and flow to compete. The best part is how the haters don't even bother Cole. He just laughs em off by clowning on them while simultaneously giving some life advice if they are willing to hear.
dawg u didnt even mention BORN SINNER.... like... what about the deluxe version that had 50 cent, kendrick and Miguel or however u spell his name bru that whole project a classic come on bro but iss all love
I thought that the music would speak for itself but the people want everything else Its okay no problem I show up on everyone album You know what the outcome will be ~Jermaine Lamar Cole
Idk man maybe im just out of the loop but J cole fans seem pretty chill. Nothing like Drake or worse, Eminem fans. Every fanbase has its bad eggs but this one seems generally more wholesome than others. Kendrick Lamar fans are much worse as Kendrick is more popular. "OmG Kendrick MURDERS EVERY SINGLE ARTIST ON EVERY SINGLE FEATURE!" Casuals in not just music, but anything (just look at sports or gaming... yikes) so its best to judge a fanbase in totality. And all things considered, J Cole has a decently behaved fanbase Also, ive never got the feeling that J Cole nor his fanbase were hated. This is an... Interesting video i will say
You haven't been around here for a while lol... I will say there is a video where T.I. comes up that I'll do soon, I'm just being a bit lazy with that video tbh
The crazy thing is Kendrick fans make J Cole fans look like pacifists or like Richard Feynman. Kendrick fans generally suck him off to no end. I like both artists but Kendrick fans are by far more insufferable. And yet Kendrick doesn't seem to get hate for a lot of his toxic fandom. Seems a little hypocritical to me.
J cole has no classics, and that’s his biggest problem. He has albums that’s considered classic by his die hard fans but not to the rest of the community! Let’s just be real! As I stated somewhere else above;Friday night lights is still his best body of work to date!
@@andreettienne3231bro just because you didn’t listen to his albums doesn’t mean they’re not classics. For example I used to not understand all the hype around Kendrick Lamar until I sat down and listened to good kid madd city and that has been my 4th favorite album to date. That was also the turning point where Kendrick became my 3rd favorite artist. I didn’t know back then that it was a classic. Most people who say albums aren’t a classic haven’t actually just sat down and listened to it while focusing on the music. Almost all top rappers albums are considered classics mostly by their own fans. Kendrick’s albums are considered classics by a lot more because he has a much bigger fanbase who don’t sit down and listen to Coles albums.
