We don’t need them to become King or Malcolm but they do have their uses in the fact that they have a large soapbox that they stand on regularly. That just speaks to the lack of black spoke people shown in media. In 80s and 90s it was Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, but then they fell out of favor for different reasons. Look at BLM, no definite leader and therefore a movement that becomes co opted. Black athletes are usually the few black folk who have media visibility anymore and imo social justice stuff is just trendy. Folk ain't want to highlight those doing the real work.
