@@rizqiereza4835 Ewing got doubled and triple teamed the whole series. As soon as he made a move, help converged. He also set the record for blocks in a final series at the time.
Although he failed to bring my city a championship, I'd give just about anything to have him back in his prime again. At least then we were competitive.
It would be cool if he played during the same time melo was in New York. He’d get more recognition because he was significantly better then every Center except Dwight Howard and they may have won a ring
Did yall notice how Shaq always had great teams around him his whole career? Magic- Penny Lakers- Kobe and Phil (arguably the best coach ever) Miami- Prime DWade and Pat Riley coaching Cavs- LeBron Suns- Nash and Stoudemire Celtics- KG, Pierce, Ray and Doc coaching Imagine if Ewing had teams as good as these...
@@nerdstop5025 He only played on a good team in his prime on the suns. The sixers were good when he was very young but that was during a loaded east and they were getting old
I believe if his knees weren't so screwed up. He would've been in a better argument for most dominant and efficient center. Would've been nice to see him win a ring.
I remembered my dad cried in the car one day reminiscing about the Pat Ewing day’s of the Knicks because they never gave him another superstar around him. Very great player and i wore 33 growing up because i used to play center just like he did
The problem is he was good at everything but wasn’t great at anything. He was a good, but not great shooter, he was a good inside scorer, but not a great inside scorer. He was a good defender, but not a great one. He had no specific quality that made him a superstar. Shaq had that ELITE inside game Hakeem has his unstoppable dream shake and supreme defense Alonzo Mournings defense Ewing was good at all of that, but not all time
6ix9ine Solid description. He’s underappreciated, but definitely not being “shafted” when it comes to all-time great lists. I’d say he WAS great at all those things, but not ELITE. But your point stands and it is why he was behind them.
Ewing all day. To appreciate Ewing is to watch him play on a bad achilles and still school cats bf it snapped in the conference finals. He was a baller!!! a warrior, a real one!!!
That 99 postseason run was incredible Though Ewing did get hurt in the Eastern conference finals and didn't play for the rest of the playoffs That's still incredible that an 8th seat made the NBA finals
I was born in 2003, I was never there to see the greatness of the 90s(luckily I have my NBA superfan of a dad to tell me stories) but how I wish I could see all those great big men battling it out. Of course the big man isn't dead like some people say, but I doubt I will ever see a player like Hakeem, Robinson or my favorite of them all Ewing again.
Not many conversations about him, but I never knew his greatness was ever in question. The lynchpin of that franchise. Pressure put on him every night to perform at a high level on both ends with no second star to help shoulder any of those responsibilities or take them over if he had a bad night or was hurt.
This was an awesome video Low. This makes me like Patrick Ewing even more and I already loved him on the knicks and I’m a knicks fan. Thanks for standing up for the knicks GOAT
His best chance was in 1997. The Knicks had reloaded their roster with Houston, Johnson and Childs. Unfortunately, the suspensions during the playoffs killed them
The Knicks most likely would of won that year if there was no suspension. They were the best team after the all-star break. That team gelled perfectly midway though the season
@@Terror832 The two best teams in the NBA that year were the Knicks and the Bulls...the Jazz were a distant third (and I say that with all due respect to Utah). A 1997 ECF between the Knicks and Bulls would have been epic and quite possibly led to the dethroning of the Bulls but I am biased towards the 90s Knicks.
Sums up the issue in the last few minutes. Played while Olajuwon, O'Neal and Robinson were playing at a comparable level. Even in his early years you still had Kareem and Moses putting up numbers
People forget how great this man is. I watched MJ’s double-nickel game, and looking back, I never realized how dominant Ewing was in that game. He’s easily the greatest Knick of all time, 🚫 🧢
My earliest basketball memories are from the mid 90s onward and the way I remember that era, Ewing was definitely not underappreciated in his time. I feel like the dialogue around him was that he was basically an automatic hall of famer. Clashes with the Bulls were legendary, just ask Spike Lee. However, the winds of time have definitely been less favorable to Ewing than they have to other players you mentioned like Barkley and Malone but it depends where your knowledge of Ewing is coming from. He seems to appeal less and less to younger fans and players, but anyone who watched the game actively while he was playing for the Knicks has applied the eye test and would probably argue that he's a top ten center of all time. Basically if you remember that John Starks could spontaneously take over a quarter despite not being a consistent All-Star caliber player then you probably also remember how consistently excellent Ewing was.
Maybe since the modern era, but he ain't win them a championship. Dont disrespect the guys that actually won it all like Earl the Pearl or Walt Frazier
It’s weird I’m a New Yorker and we love and respect tf outta Ewing so hearing that he’s under appreciated is new to me but when I think ab it I’m actually not surprised to hear this
He is in the same league of guys like Shaq, The Admiral, The Dream, Moses, KArem, etc...... BUT - he does not have a ring. That´s the only reason he is underrated.
you hit it on the head....statistically players like T Chandler and B Wallace and D Howard would have gad less defensive respect had they played in Ewings era... Ewing was a defensive stalwart and one of the top 10 defensive anchors ever and he stands above many players that have won the DPOY award in the years following Ewings career and prime... Ewing played in the golden age of Centers in NBA History
I applaud you, (who cares ) have changed my mind about Ewing . Jordan never won until he had a supporting cast I have always known he had puss for a supporting cast . I think the Knicks were an adaption of the Pistons , but the rules would not favor them . Well done .
Doubt you really read this but just wanna take the time out to say thanks for the vids man. Actually inspired me to not only make my own channel and vids, but to even try to be a pro sports analyst all together. Great work bro and thank you✊🏾
At 90s he has lost playoff series only to chicago. Indiana (3-3) and miami(3-1) at the eastern conference. No other team never beat ewing and knicks. This is why I thing he was real warrior and true leader.
Great video, Ewing is pretty underrated which seems crazy but true. He wasn’t quite Hakeem or Shaq but just right below them. He’s for sure a top tier big man in NBA history. Shame he didn’t get a ring
at the end you should have made one last comparative analyst of Ewing vs the top 7 or 8 or even 10 of the 90's best centers... also Ewing had great playoff success and he beat up on some great players in the postseason
The NY Knicks royally screwed up the opportunity to have Bernard King and Ewing play together. The intensity of those two would have even stiffled Michael Jordan. Especially in Jordan's first 6 years. After that I don't know how they could be so inept at getting Ewing another dominant player. The Knicks ownership and management is still inept! I always said when he was playing that NY did not fully appreciate Patrick Ewing and that they'd regret that - well when Ewing retired they were never able to get another player or have another run like when Ewing was leading in a talent packed era. Ewing played in the time of the bigs - dominant centers and with Jordan! He still excelled!
Patrick Ewing is my favorite Knick of all time. He is the sole reason why I am a Knicks fan to this day. He was a dominant force for 10+ years on both sides of the ball. He's the truth even without a ring.
Patrick Ewing is one of the great players. The only problem I had with him was I thought his game was too finesse for a Center during 80's and 90's. Olajuwon and even David Robinson were tougher centers who slam the ball in the hoop more regularly. Ewing relied mainly on his 10 to 15 foot jump shot.
Do a video on Chris bosh I swear he’s one of the most underrated players in NBA history 11x all star in 12 seasons 17k points 8k rebounds averaged 20 ppg and 7 rbg per game for his career 2 time champ and more
This is very good context. In particular the part about how he was a great player on good teams but didn't play with anyone else who is all nba, all defense or even a 20+ppg player.
In Ewing's entire career, his teammates combined for 3 All-Star **selections**, two of whom were injury subs (Starks and Oakley in 1964). Ewing haters tried to blame that on Ewing not passing, but when many "disappointing" players left Ewing's Knicks they got **worse** (Xavier McDaniel and Charles Smith). The *one* guy whose game improved from not playing with Ewing was Anthony Mason.
He never played with another all star player. The man consistently took it to every other big in the league. Even Shaq calls him a top 5 all time center. He was literally taking Jordan's bulls to 7 games by himself. Hell, he even took Hakeem to 7 games and could've won if Starks didn't play so badly. Give him another star and he has a ring.
If you go look at Basketball reference they have gone back and rated players for defensive win shares and defensive rating. Ewing was number 1 in the NBA in both in back to back seasons, Not just amongst centers but all players. He was in the top 3 four other times yet he only got one all-nba defensive team in his career. The weird part was that the Knicks in that era were known for their defense and everybody knew that started with the big fella in the middle.
Hes definitely one of the best defenders also a player who should have won DPOY even during his career he did kind of develop a 3pt shot but he gets ranked lower because of that bad series in 94 finals where hakeem destroyed him in that series also missed a open wide game winner aganist the pacers
So Scottie dunks on Ewing once...I vividly remember Ewing blocking Scottie's shots in dramatic fashion on numerous occasions. People also forget Ewing had a leg injury in that finger roll game...no lift
But the reason why the Pippen dunk was so "WOOAAAAH!" was because Ewing was so great. Remember Deandre Jordan's lob dunk where the defender gets obliterated? Well imagined the Defender is the one dunking, and obliterating DJ instead. That's why the Pippen dunk means something :)
Before even watching I agree. Ewing is mad disrespected. Ewing would kick butt in today's league with his abilities and athleticism. Personally I'd rate him at 5th-8th all time at center
He would b the goat ina player that plaid in an era where there was so much things arising in the nba at the time at the same time, show the 50 gr8st players in nba history from his era without championships among other awards and just show stats and how much help or talent with him rather than against him nite in and out anyone would rank him top 10,
I don't really think he was underappreciated, maybe he became so by some younger fans but to me he even felt kind of overappreciated, because he played in one of the biggest markets in their last great NBA era and he was a truly positive figure for all we know. Everybody ranks Pat in the top 50 and often top 30 players of all-time, in the top 10 centers, as one of the greatest Knicks ever, and so on. Everybody who knows a little about basketball knows him as a great college player, the face of the New York Knicks, and a defensive presence to be reckon with. Then, there is the fact that he didn't win a ring (tough when you have to play Jordan's Bulls and Hakeem's Rockets) and played in a decade where other great centers were around the place, so maybe that's why you could say he is "underappreciated". I think most people value him correctly, he's not in the same discussion as the top 5 centers but comes right after alongside David Robinson, Alonzo Mourning, Dwight Howard (who's arguably more underappreciated) There is also the "Ewing theory" of 1999 when his team played better as he got hurt, which may be a reason for some people to underrate him.
