Why do people say meditation can change your life? Can meditating regularly really have an impact on your life? Dr. K has a lot of personal experience with meditation and focusing. Years of studying and doing well in clinical practice require a lot of focus. Meditation helped tremendously with developing this focus.
In this video, Dr. K explains why cultivating Dharana, or one-pointedness or a one pointed mind, can help change your life.

Resonates with me a lot. After trying for years to get better(I was suicidal and many other problems.) I woke up at 3:30 (am) to watch a meteorite shower. The weather was perfect and I went to a quiet place and watched. As I was watching a lot of things clicked and I undertook action. It pretty much saved my life. And now I'm in the final weeks of treatment. Coming out the other side as a fully functioning person.

I used to be like that too until I tried to find it fun. I was an F student from 4th-6th grade until I just snapped out of it and became a straight A student. You just have to find the love for it. For me, it was the discovery that I enjoyed learning and being “smarter” than others. You just have to look from within. Hope this helps.

Would you consider doing a full video/talk on meditation in some kind of a structured way? For example, how to start meditating, best sources for meditation practices, how long should you meditate in the beginning etc. I've been trying to piece the information together from all of your videos but it's just simply too much content to go over. Or maybe I missed something?

Once I was really depressed, so much so that I lost the motivation to do basic things like eating, for months I barely ate and lost a lot of weight and it wasn't intentional. One day, I thought, I don't want to be so miserable anymore and then I got better. It wasn't quick but I still remember that as the point when I started to get better. I don't know what happened inside my head but my recovery was led by that one thought.

18:30 I just experienced this moment yesterday when listening to your video on body fat! I have always been a person that can accept something you tell me is true but, until I understand the mechanics or science behind it, I don't know how to apply the information to my life. (That's the best way I know to describe it.) I was the annoying kid that always asked, "But why...?", growing up - because I genuinely wanted to know. I have always struggled with weight my whole life, but especially since I was diagnosed with MS and had to switch from a very physical job to a sedentary job. I have been trying to motivate myself to exercise regularly and place exercise as a top priority, but I have been able to come up with excuses to not exercise. Your video titled, "What New Fat Research Actually Says", made me realize I have misunderstood a LOT of stuff around body fat and how it affects everything, probably because a lot of this is newer information from research. When you talked about what happens when we get stressed and energy is released, and how fat is linked to so many mental issues along with the physical issues, I had this moment where it just clicked - it was the "light bulb moment", and I felt my focus and determination to exercise every day completely shift and grow. I haven't felt this committed and focused on exercise ever in my life, and I grew up playing soccer starting at age 4. I am so glad that RU-vid randomly recommended your videos, Dr. K, and I have been listening to them with a concentration I haven't experienced in a long time.

Being open to whatever and just experiencing a movie or game as it comes can improve your enjoyment massively. One way I see focus and distraction: Focus = micro-distractions, leaves-scale distraction Distraction = macro-distractions, forest-scale or maybe tree-scale distraction
@nomukun1138
@nomukun1138 9 месяцев назад
If you think about one leaf, then another, then another, and can't think about one leaf for long, you're distracted. If you think about one forest until you choose to stop, you are very focused.
@mintee8638
@mintee8638 9 месяцев назад
@@nomukun1138 You have a great idea in there. 1 One can say they are focusing on the same forest while going from leaf to leaf. But then which case is true? 2 The leaf can be as complex as a forest (if you don't include the leaf level details here). 3 If you look at 1 thing and then look at 0 things, that sounds like meditation. What if there's a spectrum from distraction to focus to meditation? 4 The problem I see is how to define focus. What if a better definition of focus is on what you avoid rather than what you do? 5 The other issue is a classification issue. For example, in the points I'm making, they seem somewhat wild and random to me. Yet, they are on the same topic. Am I distracted or focused? I would say both. I am distracted if I planned something else. I am focused if this is something I intend to do, setting aside time to not do anything else. This create a boundary in my mind against other useful things I could do. When they pop up, I can give the reason that I sorted my time to do that task x hours from now.
@nomukun1138
@nomukun1138 9 месяцев назад
@@mintee8638 We could be thinking about very different stretches of time. You might be discussing an hour-long study session, but I was discussing moment-to-moment or second-to-second focus (which was closer to what Dr. K meant, and it's what the practice of meditation strengthens, to my understanding.)
@mintee8638
@mintee8638 9 месяцев назад
@@nomukun1138 Time scale is a good point there. What I see matters is one's intent and goal. If one wants to compare 2 leaves, then switching back and forth between them makes sense. I prefer not to define distraction as switching between objects, if you like that definition. I would classify meditation as distinct from focus. Some meditations are about not focusing on any one thing, but quieting the mind to one's best ability. If they do focus on some thing, I see it more about relaxing the mind than focusing it in a direction.
@nomukun1138
@nomukun1138 9 месяцев назад
@@mintee8638 You're right, I lost sight of the many valid meditation practices in which strengthening one-pointed concentration isn't the objective. One-pointed concentration isn't needed if comparing different objects is the intent and goal, but that comparing process can still be very focused.

I am so good at hyperfocusing, but it causes me to get obsessed and to neglect other priorities like eating or drinking water or cleaning my room or brushing my teeth, etc. Then, when I snap out of this flow state, sometimes days later, I have anxiety when I realize the things I've been neglecting. Then I procrastinate because I'm worried I'll get sucked back into hyperfocus mode. I agree that flow is enjoyable and helps me ace my classes, but at what cost? How does one achieve a happy medium? What's the best way to get out of a flow state? I set alarms to snap me out of it, but they annoy me so I turn them off and resume hyperfocus.

so you are saying focus is what keeps us productive and motived and so on. but does our mind not need some boredom too, to be creative? the mind has to wander a bit so u think about stuff u would normally not think about. for example tipical shower thoughts. this is where im getting confused, buddhism is all about mindfulness and being in the now, with meditation to becoming very focused. but can the brain be focused every day all day? or will it get exhausted ? and if the brain gets exhausted is this a "good" exhaustion or a bad one?
@edgardo3786
@edgardo3786 3 года назад
What I believe is this: Boredom is the cause of no to low focus. Now stay with me. With continued focus and meditation, you may reach a point where nothing is boring. Life itself with excite you. Just siting there. I believe wondering thoughts are just a cluster of thoughts you already know on some sort of level. It may be conscious or unconscious. The ability to organize and use the unconscious information/thoughts is the ability to focus. You will be a whole lot more creative with a focused mind then a wondering mind that goes in circles. That’s my understanding and what I’ve experienced. I think those wondering thoughts are just unconscious, but thoughts you already know, which makes them honestly not as useful.

Is it a good idea to leave chat on to practice ignoring it? I for one never mute to practice not getting angry when somebody flames me, I'm not sure it has worked though. Now that I think about it it's probably because I get angry at the fact that I get angry in the first place, instead of accepting it for what it is. I have a lot of trouble in general accepting the size of my ego, and the fact that I haven't managed to reduce it.

I honestly think it's about your mindset, I look at it from the other person's pov and decide if they're being rational or not. If they aren't then it's genuinely not worth thinking about it because it's just their emotions in the moment which usually misguides their judgement, making it pretty pointless to get angry at it. Enjoyment isn't that simple though. If there are toxic teammates, less enjoyable game. Supportive teammates, a more enjoyable time. In both cases though the mind loses focus from the game.

What if you don’t have a problem of focusing on one thing but directing that focus to the correct thing? I’m interested in “too many things” and can easily focus for hours or days on something that isn’t useful to me. My parents are biologists and biology is interesting to me. So one day instead of studying for my exam I just got distracted by the love life of penguins and ended up looking up every single research paper I could find on that topic, taking like 20 work hours researching penguins nearly without eating.

Learn how to prioritise certain things in your life I guess… for me, my mind wanders a lot and I get distracted very easily. One method I used to help with completing tasks is by knowing what’s a want and a need. For example, there’s a difference between wanting to research on penguins and needing to study for a big exam. Knowing what is at stake definitely helps you focus on the more important tasks.

Yo DR.K you should check out the book named: "21 lessons for the 21st century" by Yuval Noah Arrari the famous author of the book Sapiens He destroys religions and then goes on to give dharma as a way of attempting at finding meaning in life

Just wanted to thank you for getting me into meditation, I find it really helpful and actually addictive. Would it be possible for you to remove the chat on the side? I'm able to stay focused on the topic but once I accidentally look over I lose it and get into what people are saying.

I think that’s something you eventually learn through meditation. It’s called noting. Just note to yourself that you got distracted and go back to the main focus. Overtime it should improve slightly.

That's what it's like when you start out. When you notice your mind wandering off, just return it to your breathing. Like Dr. K says, each time you do that is a "pushup" for your brain, attention span, focus, etc. You can't suddenly expect to do one hundred pushups if you've never done any before. Keep at it :)

as Max said, thats how its expected to begin, you will be getting slightly longer and longer focus windows with practice

Don’t give up. Keep practicing. If you can only remain focus for a few seconds that’s okay, just keep trying. Don’t feel pressured or stress.

You completely missed the whole point of meditation. It's not to achieve a goal (quiet mind), the journey *is* the goal (bringing the mind back to calmness after it wonders). Keep trying, it's that simple.

Relax, give in, surrender to the present by paying attention to it. Think of your thoughts like you do the birds singing, it's just noise, and you don't try to get rid of the bird noises... Just feel them
