“What gets measured get’s improved” Peter Drucker
It’s pretty safe to say that most people would choose health over disease when it comes to their mouth - yet isn’t it interesting that not many people feel that they have the tools necessary to test for a healthy mouth at home, or why it’s even so important.
Throughout the day our mouths are exposed to acids and bases both naturally and by the foods and drink we ingest. A mouth stays healthy when it is able to self-regulate between the acids and the bases into the neutral or zone throughout the day. It’s when the balance is too acidic or basic that cavities and gum disease happen.
You may be thinking “So how does one go about figuring out if my mouth is balancing itself out or not?” Here is an indicator...if you have cavities, sensitivity, bleeding gums or build up that requires a “cleaning” you may want to consider pH testing to see what’s going on.
Good news, it’s super easy to test. The video shows you how I do it.
Testing often and regularly will help you get a good baseline of what is happening. Keeping a log or photo journal can be helpful too. Too acidic and you are likely seeing cavities and or experiencing sensitivity. Too basic and you could be struggling with gum disease and build up.
The video walks you through the importance of testing, and how things you can do if you find that you are acidic and trying to control cavities.
The links to the testing strips below are the ones I’ve used for many years and have had good luck. If you use the affiliate links below, thank you for helping support this cause of bringing oral health home to the consumers!
These strips seem to be the most accurate and consistent for saliva testing. The testing range is in 2 step intervals which means it is sensitive to small changes in pH: amzn.to/2AQjz8r
These strips are broad ranged and can be useful for general testing of your water and foods/drinks: amzn.to/2AuPeto
Here is the gum I talked about as well ;)

This is very interesting. I noticed before that I have more cavities in periods of bigger stress. Stress makes me feel like I have acid in the muscles just like when exercising. Since my stress levels went down to almost zero, I haven't new cavities. So I believe these are directly related. Plus my dentist said at the time that my PH was acid.

I got a cleaning today and I told my dentists that I'mx now going to start my Xyletol experiment and not floss for 3 months until my next cleaning. I always have plaque and a highly acidic mouth, so this will be interesting. They're excited too!!!

Good luck!! - I'd suggest disclosing your mouth to see if you are developing acidic biofilm as well :) I'm excited to learn how you do!!

Ph is so important! Diet alone wasn’t enough to start seeing improvement in my 3 year olds mouth. Understanding that this was the first step to getting his mouth back to a healthy ph was the key to haulting the bad bacteria that was causing decay! So grateful for his valuable info, thanks Carrie!

Hi I know you commented years ago, but what did you implement to help your 3 year old balance ph?

Good question, I don't think food and diet is the only reason 😮

Something suggests me it could be affected by other body organs not doing their job properly, like liver, blood, stomach, intestines.... Our body is complicated

I assume I'm always basic bc I don't eat by mouth. Medical reasons, I'm on a feeding tube, but am allowed to taste & spit on occasion. Can you recommend how an oral care should be worked for someone like me. Less routine care or same as everyday person?

When you use a your finger,spoon or other item it not going to be the same as getting it directly from the source because everything have a different Ph so include the hand soap use to wash. Your hand the water and dish liquid. You mouth also changes as the saying goes on so do depend you mouth.

But is it proven that pH can be changed permanently by some diet or procedure? Are there proofs and research confirming it's possible to permanently change?

Does it matter how much xylitol is in gum? I heard you should aim for more than 1g? Very helpful, thank you
@CarrieIbbetson
@CarrieIbbetson 4 года назад
Muna Ali great question! It’s good to aim for 1 gram, but that isn’t as important as looking at other sweeteners that may be used. Sorbitol is another sweetener that is used, but bacteria can actually learn how to adapt to sorbitol and then it becomes something that creates acid like sugar does. Best to avoid sorbitol and artificial sweeteners

I am wondering if you can balance your ph eating a piece of broccoli?
@CarrieIbbetson
@CarrieIbbetson 4 месяца назад
Absolutely, @nonane2390! You've touched on a fantastic point about the benefits of broccoli, especially when it comes to oral health. Eating raw broccoli can indeed act as a mini scrubber for your teeth and gums. The texture of raw broccoli is perfect for helping to clean your mouth as you chew, making it a natural way to freshen up your oral environment. While raw broccoli is preferred for its scrubbing benefits due to its firmness and texture, lightly steaming it can still be beneficial if you're looking for a softer option. Chewing on broccoli, whether raw or just lightly steamed, stimulates saliva production, which is nature's best mouth cleanser. Saliva helps to wash away food particles and bacteria, reducing the risk of plaque buildup. Ending a meal with a serving of raw broccoli or snacking on it can be a great, healthy habit that contributes to both your overall and oral health. It's a simple, effective way to help keep your mouth clean and fresh throughout the day. So, while balancing your body's pH with diet requires a broader approach, incorporating broccoli as a natural "mini scrubber" for oral hygiene is a brilliant idea. If you have any more questions or need tips on healthy eating and oral care, feel free to reach out. Happy to help!
