Funny that you mentioned Capcom since they just started to hunt down and copyright strike videos of any kind of sexy mods for any of there female characters in all of there games like Street fighters and resident evil. Japanese games have always been my reason for having Sony's consoles. If they're gonna snub japanese devs then their console is pointless. I have a PC and that xbox game pass is looking juicier by the day.

The whole reason I have preferred PlayStation over other consoles have been the Japanese games that it gets and no other system gets. I am sure a lot of people here in the West feel the same way, so Sony is ignoring two markets with their decision.

The main reason I bought a PS3 and PS4 was for its large library of exclusive mature Japanese games. But since their censorship policies, they lost that edge (or rather, threw it away), I'm not getting the PS5. The Nintendo Switch is becoming a much better option for mature Japanese games.

Whenever sony says they're still focused on the japanese market it's corporate denial. Although to be fair when it comes to the switch's strong sales it may come down to the portability. The japanese console market has a history of prefering handhelds. This is probably due to their brutal work culture which keeps most people awfully busy

Can you do a video about how Steam recently mass banned thousands of games with explicit content for all german users (except ones by bigger companies)? You can't even access the shop sites of games you've already bought anymore. Apperantly it's because Steam refuses to implement the ID verification needed and now instead asks indie devs to remove all erotic content from their games in order to be put onto the german store again. I think this really needs more attention.

@@DongsMBM I think the concern here is that if there's ID verification on a website they'll likely store the information making it possible for it to be hacked, in comparison getting your ID checked at a store or casino is just making sure the birthdate is correct and the ID isn't an obvious fake.

Sony died for me when they killed Gravity Rush 2's online less than a year after it released. That combined with the zero promotion they gave it and making Gravity Rush Remastered an extremely limited Amazon only release - they sabotaged their own franchise, and it downright feels like it was intentional. The only thing that surprises me about the Team Siren members leaving after all that is that they stayed at Sony for as long as they did after getting done dirty like that.
This makes me sad too. I always enjoy doing Photo Hunt and they shut down the server way too soon. I was hoping for Gravity Daze 3 on PS5 but it seems imposssible now.
And they did so in an era where servers are almost free for them.... i even sold my ps4, and i don't even care to buy a 5... just pathetic what they are doing in the last 4 years, and i don't want any part in it... Amen to that. I bought the original on release day for the Vita, but I didn't get around to the second one until after the servers were shut down. It's appalling. They couldn't even be bothered patching in the bonus, online-only content after the fact. They just totally killed the game's servers and, essentially, the franchise. It's a damn shame because they're both great games.
I remember rushing out to collect all the gems so I could get all the costumes. I remember people were posting their screenshots around the cities and posting them on social media before they turned the server off. Sony was the ungrateful NPC's Kat was trying to save.
I should dust my ps4 off and play gravity rush 2 again. I remember getting that game in Christmas 2017. Sad that they shutoff the servers though. Haven't gotten a chance to play that game more.
I heard recently they censored scenes in Assassin's Creed Valhalla for the Japanese release, because showing the faces and blood from cut off heads was too... inappropriate? Whether or not they'll change this feature, censorship in any country can have some of the weirdest or dumbest standards. :/

There is an often forgotten interview with a BlazBlue dev back right before the launch of the PS4 citing that he thinks the PS4 was more of an American console. I was shocked to see that happening back in 2014 but now im nowhere near surprised after they moved to California.

It isn't that Sega neglected Japan. The West just had better marketing and sales strategies than Japan at the time. Back in those days, Sega's branches were allowed to work autonomously to a degree, doing what was best for each market. So instead of having Sega's Japanese studios work on games just for the Western market, Sega of America established their own development teams while still importing games from Japan. While successful, the autonomy did cause a divide within Sega when making decisions regarding the Saturn. As we know, this did not end well.

Sega of America wanted to appeal to the west by having an aggressive marketing campaign that bashed Nintendo relentlessly (something that was considered highly disrespectful in Japanese culture) as well as having a cooler more edgier tone in their brand. Sega of Japan wanted none of this and they were becoming jealous that Sega of America's marketing strategies were actually working well for them while the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was flopping in Japan due to them refusing to adapt with the times. When the Sega Saturn was in development, Sega of America wanted to partner with Sony and Silicon Graphics to work on the architecture. Sega of Japan on the other hand wanted to stick to what they had and made a console that was more arcade centric despite the fact arcades were dying in America. Silicon Graphics would partner with Nintendo to create the N64 and Sony went on to make the PlayStation.

Microsoft's interest in Japan is because of the potential of Xcloud and Xbox Game Pass there. Japan is handheld dominated (which works well for Nintendo and Tencent) and it can potentially work well for Xbox Game Pass/Xcloud streaming on mobile as well. Frankly, having Gal Gun on the console would have been great for them but that game would have never come out on Xbox Game Pass/XCloud anyway.

I mainly bought the playstation for Japanese games, never cared for the first party games. I made the SWITCH in 2018 after the censorship stuff started to happen in 2017. I had fond memories of the ps2 and ps3 but..... It just show brand loyalty is dumb when the can backstab ya. I'm in Japan, PC is the current trend and fps fans are many. Everyone can run the minimum requirements nowadays. Switch is a portable console so.....and I recall PSP was popular portable console before Switch and few and few games are being release now and also old hardware issues. Switch took over. (Primarily DbD and Apex are hot.) Comments about censorship are totally conjectures. Japanese people can actually focus on just playing. tldr: Switch took over the place of PORTABLE consoles, you can do your work and play at the same time on PC now. Standard consoles are obsolete and pricey.

As a Japanese person myself, the biggest reason I don't use plystation is the change in button layout. The idea of x being confirm just sounds so bloody absurd for me.

@@ImOnGearSoWhat unfortunately the main reason PC games just can't work out with some people is because it's either too expensive or people just don't really know how to take care of it. One can be built but I've talked to a couple people that followed instructions on RU-vid to the letter only to have the whole thing either break down immediately or nearly burning the house down. I can't say what they could have possibly done differently from the video in order for that to happen. Not to mention that it constantly needs to be upgraded at some point, and by the time some people get the money to get that upgrade then something more powerful comes along. I can tell you the most people avoid it because it's quite the hassle for some. I still intend on getting a PC one day but gaming PCs are more expensive than regular ones. Not only that I have no way of knowing if I'll be able to settle down in one place for very long for that to even be possible.
@hatoru17 True. Price aside, you can always get a Pre-Build PC to start off. And if you want to build a PC, you should start off by learning the fundamentals. I also highly suggest getting a second opinion from someone with experience. I recommend going to r/buildapc on Reddit for help. (There’s tons of helpful guides there for beginners.)

@@faiyez One problem at a time, but yes your right. However the ESRB and others like it mostly are limitations that are given to dev/publishers (not forcefully but it's in their best interests when it comes to sales). A game rated A will sell much worse than one labeled M.
@@faiyez That doesn't make any sense. The ESRB explains on the box what kinds of content are inside of a game, it doesn't censor or limit anything. Sony is literally telling game devs that their content isn't acceptable on a case by case basis with absolutely no set of guidelines in place at all that the game devs can read beforehand. I'm not sure if you are just uninformed or angry that anyone could possibly dislike Sony, but do some research next time.
They forgot Japan game market is bigger than west combine on console alone. Even some game have to through Japan first before recognized by global gaming community.
I for one wouldn't mind Microsoft obtaining more Japanese IP's as that would mean more JRPG's coming to the west (hopefully more translated jrpg's). Being able to play more of the hidden gems without a translator app or dictionary would be a dream!
Better idea: Sony stop being obsessed with western games. I wouldn't trust Microsoft to handle anything reasonably with Japanese developers after what happened with Scalebound and their entire history in the Japanese market up to now.
@@17th_Colossus I get your point but we can't avoid them all. The best would be if Microsoft were to be successful in bringing more jrpg's the the west to expect Sony's greed to take over and double down on their efforts so that we then get even more. Sony unfortunately does not often buy companies where as with Microsoft we can expect not only a Koei Tecmo standand of games but also hopefully companies like Spike Chunsoft and Nippon Ichi Software games to find their way to the west.
As a japanese i feel betrayed by how sony has left us in the dust. But this is still the gaming side the eletronic or audio area is still strong in japan
Sony will pay dearly for losing focus on Japan. The thing that makes it special is the Japanese culture and game designers. Without that you have an American box of meat head crap like the 360 which is perhaps the least interesting successful console ever created

I honestly would love to see Microsoft take over in Japan. On top of it being hilarious, if they can let Japanese devs make their games without any compromises, that would cause a huge market shift.
They already dropped that ball when they wanted Gal Gun Returns censored, leading to the Xbox version being cancelled altogether (announced on Christmas, no less).
The O button follows Nintendo's A button position, while the X button follows XBox's A button position. Which "makes more sense" is mostly a question of which console you're used to.
This is beyond true, if you're lucky enough to have two accounts one for the West and the other for the East there's literally no difference in the PS store, back in the day Japan had exclusives on the PS3 and the start of the PS4, now it's a bunch of western games outside of very few exclusives/US doesn't approve it.

nintendo has your back for now...but they had a gun pointed at it only a few years ago. We'll have to wait and see how things end up because it could be just a matter of time for Nintendo to reverse its stance.
As much as I may dislike it, Sony's commercial decisions make sense. They kept their PlayStation headquarters in Tokyo during the launch of the PS4 and had set sales expectations for each region, and I remember them (i.e., Shuhei Yoshida) being taken by surprise at how well it was selling in the West, and it not meeting its expectations in Japan convinced them to move over to California and become West-centric.
To be truthful I think it was long coming, especially given that all their 1st party games and studios are American. I honestly don't mind what happens, I'll still just play PlayStation because that's what I'm happy doing
This is indeed problematic, but as a pc player im hoping they release more Japanese games on pc. At least on pc there is no need for censorship and no hardware restrictions.
Sony doesn't care about handhelds anymore. Especially now Sony of America is runing things for now on. Sony doesn't care about Japan anymore. If they really care about Japan why they don't make more Japanese games. Instead they force on Western games.
Honestly, this is all very disheartening. Even though I’ve never owned one since the PS2, it’s still sad to see Sony abandon their own home for America. Also, another interesting point: apparently, from what I’ve heard, the PS5 actually has regulatory measures on what you can say when posting to social media. That, combined with their wierd, inconsistent censorship policy, doesn’t really paint Sony in a good light.
It’s 100% because Japan really only cares about mobile and handheld gaming. I mean look at that chart, even the Vita does better than PS4. The mobile market is insane over there and this has nothing to do with censorship imo.
Censorship and social justice mixed with broken and unfinished games tend to destroy sales of any gaming product. Also not actually selling consoles in physical stores doesn't help sales either since scalpers have all the console the games and accessories just sit on the shelves collecting dust.
Man. I don't see Microsoft being successful in Japan during the past but now, I see something brewing on their part regarding their niche audience in Japan. Such a shame. I freaking loved Tales of Berseria and Sakura Wars on the PS4.
Sony mistreating its roots saddens me. Feels like the PS5 gonna be my last Sony console. Hopefully they start losing money to Microsoft and Nintendo and fix *(while sweating)* their behavior halfway this generation.
This worries me, PlayStation strength comes from not being overly westernized and going full American like Xbox. Even as something as the design of the hardware.
The world is upside down, boys are trying to be girls, men are trying to be women, Xbox is trying to be japanese, and playstation trying to be american.
They just should go full in and release a " Gay-station I " that's aimed exclusively at LGBTQ and see where that gets them. Maybe they will become sooo rich ( they probably won't become rich.. )

Between content restrictions on the software side and the fact that Japanese people don’t care for large bulky hardware since space is limited. Combine those two and it’s a recipe for failure in the Japanese market.
The sales numbers themselves are misleading when the console is totally sold out. just have to remember it's not that they can't sell more in japan, it's that they don't care too.
It's 100% misleading to use the sale figures especially during a pandemic where China literally, the manufacturing plant of the world shut down for 1/4 of the year or 3 months. 3 months of non-production in China almost equates to 3 months of non production for anything electronic including the PS5. Secondly, we never had scalpers like this before, probably the same in Japan. The scalping game went too hard this year, and both Microsoft/Sony are going to need to pressure some big wigs to fix this. This actually goes across almost all section of gaming since graphic card launches fell into the same scheme.
This started during the lacklustre sales of the PS3, they pivoted halfway through the PS3 generation and focused on North American style games over Japanese style games. During the PS1, PS2 and half of the PS3 50% of games released were Japanese made games and during the start of the PS4 generation (merely 4 years later) were only 10%. SIE is basically a North American company now who care very little about the Japanese market.
I'm starting to think Sony might end up being one of those burn bright die out faster kind of companies in comparison to Xbox who seems happy just gaining track slowly and surely within regions.
I will never understand why Sony changed X and O outside of japan, it all seemed like a sick joke. The majority of veteran gamers, that played Playstation came from the SNES, where the layout was basically the same, just different symbols. The right button was "confirm" (A/O), and the down button was "back" (B/X), but in the western region they swaped them. Not only that, X and O in a context to each other are negativ and postiv symbols. In other word: you push X, a negativ symbol, to confirm, and you push O, a postive symbol, to decline. All of this considered, it seems a bit fucked up for the western market.
It was a power play by Sony. If they can bend Japanese consumers to their will, how far can they push them? I suspect Sony is maliciously trying to westernize Japanese players even at the "micro" scale...but that's just speculation. However companies have been known to hire psychologists to get their audiences to think a certain way...Twitter for example ;)
I have been a Playstation fanboy for a long time, my last none Sony console was a Sega Megadrive! But I recently got a Switch, and that and a Gaming PC has me pretty much covered.
Japan is a very mobile-centric market, so I believe the main reason for the PlayStation's loss in popularity is because Sony hasn't renewed efforts to make another portable console. Nintendo knew from the start that Japan needed a portable console, but they also knew that it wouldn't sell well in the western markets. Solution? Make a console that can be both portable AND can be played on a TV. That's why the Switch has done as well as it has on both markets. It really doesn't help Sony's case when they have obviously missed the opportunity to appease both markets and have instead side-lined the Asian markets and have gone with the more "profitable" market. Its really a classic 'adding insult to injury' kind of case. Pretty stupid on Sony's part to be frank, but I digress.
I don't think the last one has affected these sales as much as you might think. There's only a small amount of people who buy those kinds of games. Rest of them are good points tho
The Microsoft/Activision buyout seems like a wake-up call for Sony, they're sitting on loads of dormant IPs they can use to build their PS5 library. Some of which are Japanese (Wild Arms, Legend of Dragoon, Ape Escape, LocoRoco, Patapon, Gravity Rush), maybe now they can regain a market share if they resurrect these IPs.
During Microsoft's conference at the end of 2019 when they announced they'd be bringing a majority of Final Fantasy games and the first 3 Yakuza games as well as PSO2 to Xbox, they proved they have an interest in the Japanese Market. 3 MASSIVE titles they brought over, and no less on GamePass. Sony meanwhile have been censoring Japanese titles and doing everything in their stead to neglect Japan. Anyone could see it coming really. They got greedy with the PS4 and tried to use the same tactics of US in the front and it's gonna backfire. Honestly, they're lucky Microsoft stopped publishing sales figures as they aimed to make Xbox more of an ecosystem, cause if they published numbers even close to PS5 sales, it'd spell disaster for Sony.
In my point of view, if Sony cares enough for their home market to stay afloat they need to follow with what Nintendo is doing. Japanese gamers prefer handheld systems such as the Switch. Because not everyone has the time to sit down and play a game. So in my opinion, Sony should just revive their handheld system to keep their business afloat in Japan.
Japan has been moving to Mobile devices for a while now. Why do you think Nintendo made the Switch? Home Consoles in general are dying in Japan this is not just a Sony problem its just times are changing.
I had a feeling this might happen when they showed off their new console design, they have become cocky and are still riding on the PS4 success wave with their PS5. I have a strange feeling this is almost becoming like the PS3 in different ways. My hunch since the beginning it will be Xbox S/X this time being the dominant.
