I love this. I've been mentioning this bit of Shermer's arguments for a few years now and glad the clip channels are picking it up too. It's a point that needs more circulation and awareness.

Having read Francesca Stavrakopolou's book - God an Anatomy - it is clear that Religiosity has evolved over thousands of years. The further one goes back the thicker the layers of preposterous mythology become. It was once believed that Gods dwelt at the tops of mountains (the interface between heaven and Earth). Believers built temples for their gods on these mountains - and equipped them with oversized thrones and foot stools. Heaven - 'the firmament' was just above these mountains - in fact there were seven layers of this firmament. Stars were merely lights above the firmament - like fairy lights on a Christmas tree! As science began to change perceptions of the Universe - the firmament had to be relocated somewhere else - but where could it go? 3000 years ago you could convince anyone that Hell was down in the bowels of the Earth - but now we know it is just red hot magma down there.

After seeing the thumbnail I immediately thought of the "God's not dead" series of movies (of which the fifth one is supposed to be in production now). If theists are so sure god's not dead why do they keep coming up with these movies to convince themselves? It looks like they don't believe god's not dead themselves so they keep producing these movies to reassure themselves. Atheists don't produce movies to convince themselves there is no god.

Krauss' assertion that ancient gods were retired because of scientific advancement is problematic. Most gods are retired when other gods take their places. Zeus was buried by Jupiter, but not by science.

Now I know why apologetics is needed. Sorry, but these videos are so philosophically drained that they don’t matter for those who believe. Nothing but actual evidence and logic will dismember the god belief. Science doesn’t bury God, it only buries certain beliefs about God.

I am of the opinion that science has not 'Buried God', rather, it has changed the definition of what God is. What has been 'Buried' is the anthropomorphic monotheistic concept of God, to one that is Pantheistic, as Spinoza described and Einstein agreed. Only in my opinion though, for I could be wrong.

I've spent the last couple of years trying to solidify faith in an unchanging Creator Deity. Part of me still wants very much to continue to believe in this unchanging Creator Deity. I have studied many faiths and religions. Read about the Dharmic, non-theistic religions. I even went to a 10-day vipassana retreat. And then, it all began to unravel. I wish everyone the best.

He has to prepare for it; he has to think from where he is going to get his food, where he is going to be employed. He has to think. He has children and a wife, he has an old mother and an old father. He cannot be like the lilies of the field. How can he avoid toil, labor, work? - that will be suicidal. The lilies are certainly beautiful and I totally agree with Jesus, but Jesus’ statement is not yet applicable to the greater part of humanity. Unless humanity becomes very rich, the statement will remain just theoretical; it will not have any practical use. I would like the world to be richer than it is. I don’t believe in poverty and I don’t believe that poverty has anything to do with spirituality. Down the ages it has been told that poverty is something spiritual; it was just a consolation."

This is a great POSSIBLE explanation IF God does not exist. Belief in God is not dependant on accepting primitive attempts at science. And invalidity of such explanations does not logically prove that God does not exist. So scientific empirical discovery does not disprove the existence of God, only that the connection between phenomena and God in SOME religions is faulty. This is really just an attack on Christian fundamentalism. Buddhism, for example, does not speculate on such issues at all.

Ok but have you ever considered the possibility that life was deliberately made as a test? While God being with the infinite knowledge and skill able to make the universe appear self-made? I mean if that’s the case, this would explain why God doesn’t directly show himself.. because then that’s essentially spoon-feeding you the answers (that He exists). It makes a lot of sense that life is a “simulation”; God made the constant physics properties (e.g. gravity is tied to mass, the world being in 3D, photons’ speed cannot slow down its velocity, etc..) and let the universe run through a large explosion, so chemical reactions and stuff happen so seamlessly. Yk the fact that everything in the Universe has a cause could be an intentional design by God. We can argue about the universe all we want, but we can never explain why the laws of physics act the way they do.. other than it either infinitely existed before [the only thing without a cause], or that there was an intelligent alternation who spawned it all. But ofc teachers can’t make a test without giving students something to study, so these holy books/scriptures could be an “easter egg” that God only divinely added to give us a chance to pass the test. I mean we being 2000+ years later.. we can’t disprove that Jesus didn’t heal the leper, we can’t disprove that the Moon didn’t split (God easily has a 100% undo button), we can’t disprove that the Red Sea wasn’t actually cut in half (again, all of the surrounding area could’ve been undone by God with no trace). So why be quick to judge? Is it because you think science/laws of physics can’t ever be broken? What if it did but God, knowing the future, made it so we (2000+ years later) only have the old scriptures to rely on and nothing else. What if it’s all intentional by God, and who’s to say science and God can’t co-exist? You can view science as literally being the study of God’s code.

Faith, morality, and love are good virtues, but the beliefs that come along with those good virtues may pose problems, especially when one denies science, the method of inquiry that has thrived time and time again.

The empirical method of science cannot prove or disprove the true God because the true God is not a material being whose existence can be observed through a microscope or a telescope not to mention the fact that science is not omniscient.

Science is still searching for the Hebrew god Yahweh and his son Yeshua. A Nobel prize awaits the scientist that can prove he exists.

Some of the best evidence for God is coming from modern science. Atheism is marginal belief position held without evidence. We need more science, God and reason. Atheism is fatal to reason, morality and human significance.

We are living in a world where the majority of people still look to myths and superstitions. Yet, at no other time of our species, have so many looked to science and rational thinking for our guide to the future. Let's hope the latter prevails.

I think we create ourselves because the universe/space is empty until it's filled with human creativity. Science cannot disprove God created the universe because of intelligent design and fine tuning etc. but theists can't prove their God created the universe either. There are so many different religions can any of them prove their God created the universe? No, therefore atheism is rational and science is a way to find the answers.

There is no conflict between science and the God of the bible. You are making a category error. No one ever said because we have a mechanism, there is no need for an agent. Because we understand automotive engineering, there is no need for explaining Henry Ford. Science (started by Christians) is simply the study of the mechanisms in nature. God is the agent who created the mechanisms. The mechanisms didn't create themselves, nor is that logically possible.

In principal Michael Shermer is correct. But the focus is not on predators, it is on all the other things. I think Americans have a fear of predators (may it is a cultural thing). I have met the pygmies of the Congo jungle. They are not afraid of predators. They are much more concerned about the weather and the migration of animals and diseases. They worry about food and health. Drought that make the animals move to other places could cause starvation. Mysterious diseases like plagues is a strong incentive to believe in nearly anything. (Study medical history before Hippocrates i.e.) The Hittite plague is (Hittite Royal Prayers) illustrate well how it was. 1300 bc.

Isaiah 24 King James Version 24 Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. 3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word. 4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. 5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. 7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. 8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. 9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. 10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in. 11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. 12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. 13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. 14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea. 15 Wherefore glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel in the isles of the sea. 16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. 18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. 19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. 22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. 23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. Isaiah 45:7-14 7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. 8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it. 9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker!
