Your assumption/ understanding is a little bit skewed. I am in this industry for over 25 years now. Consider the following 1. The EV industry is critically dependant on the processing knowhow of Lithium. Its not like smelting aluminium - its a complicated process and china holds 90% of the worlds capacity. We might have reserves but without processing secret, its a useless piece of ore. We DO NOT have any processing capacity now and its not like you invite people and they will come running. No one wants to share their IP and this is one area where China is WAY ahead. 2. Battery manufacturing. Almost all battery packs use 18650 battery packs and guess who makes 85% of them? China. And how much does India do? < 1%. Again this contains many secrets thats difficult to source. There are factories in China where screens are installed and you cannot even see the machines. Imagine. 3. The motor ecosystem. Because of bad policies earlier, a lot of manufacturing went off to china. People found it cheaper to import low end motors - look at coimbatore. At one point of time, many motor brands were manufacturing in coimbatore, now ALL of them are importing,. This is because of bad policies till date. Also this has many critical patents and IPs as the motors used in cars and high end vehicles is extremely technology packed. Its not like you wind some motor and it works. We dont have ANY play in this space. One area where we are doing decent is in body works, automated lines etc and all thanks to the ecosystem but an EV is a lot of battery and less of body work. EV, like semiconductor industry, is very HIGH tech and there is a lot of IP involved. So we HAVE to bend back to get them interested. Remember, Tesla is NO competition to Tiago etc. If we have allowed MG (chinese company), BYD to come in why not allow a giant like Tesla with all kinds of deal sweetner. Why would India appeal to Tesla otherwise? I am with Nitin and the govt's policy in this regard. We have to go through some short term pain to gain. Its not like the rest of the car industry, the EV industry is COMPLETELY a different game. Also, note we DO NOT even make simple resistors/ capacitors in India. All we are doing is assembling so far - so we need to have LARGE players with global footprint and woo them and do whatever it takes. China can afford to be snobbish because they are at that level, we are NOT there still. We may be the 3rd largest car market but thats in ICE cars. When Tesla comes, they also bring in charging ecosystem etc which we grossly lack. Its a welcome move and I dont agree that the govt delayed. Remember, time is money in these markets. We are already late. So we have to take painful steps that will prove to be beneficial in the long run. Cheers
