It's just amazing what's NOT in the owners manual. I would have been totally clueless about the need to grease the wheel axles and auger shaft if I hadn't watched your videos, thank you so much. It makes you wonder if Honda and others want your snowblower to break and need expensive repairs so that you may as well go out and buy another one.
Great tip on keeping the auger shafts maintained and lubed. I'll make sure to do that on my neighbor's MTD this spring with the other maintenance steps. Thanks for all the great video's!
Dony, you're videos are the BEST!!! I've suscribed to your channel, and keeping my fingers crossed that you'll do a video on replacling an auger-clutch engagement cable on a Honda HS 1132. I've searched the web for days now, and no luck finding a video on this particular repair. Thanks again for all the work you do, and sharing your skills and knowledge.
I have a 30 years old Bolens that I am getting ready to replace. The space between the augur and the drive shaft from the gear box has lubrication zerk fittings so that the void between the two shafts can easily be lubricated WITHOUT a major, time consuming disassembly of the augur system. Because of your important video, I have removed Honda from my new snowblower consideration list. Thank you!
My dads older tractor mounted blower even had shear bolts in the pto shaft. I know because i've had to replace those too, btw John Deere 4040 not a lawn tractor. The low maintanence society today = job security for mechanics tomorrow. All those videos, that Iwatched, have told me to do major inspection of my new, used, mtd blower. Thanks for all your patience and hard work. Brad
Very informative thank you very much for this, that's what happened to me I hit something in my driveway and now its off so its most likely that Back shaft, the sheer pins did there job but it went right up into the machine.
I always grease my snow blower shafts. I did have a track drive Craftsman where the owner hit a big chunk of ice. He said the auger quit working on both sides. I pulled the gearbox apart and the gears were chewed completely up. He also told me by the time he got home at night, the slush pushed into his drive from the road plow turned to ice and he would repeatedly jamb the blower into it. I replaced the auger assembly and he ran it for 1 season and that new auger went to pieces. He ended up giving me the blower as scrap. I decided it was not worth fixing as it was rusty and older anywhere. He went out and bought a used plow truck to do his drive way.
Your videos are the most helpful ones I have found. I was wondering if you could do one on replacing the rubber edge on the auger. I have a 932400-520 two stage made by Ariens that has the Dura Clean auger that scrapes and propels the machine. Thank you.
I tried using a homemade roll pin in the gear box of my older 76 7hp Ariens. I used a 5/16ths drill bit cut to size. It sheared the damn thing within seconds of it being pushed into snow. Today was a holiday but tomorrow I'll go down to the shop and buy the proper pin. Thanks for your vids, very helpful.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I enjoy watching how it's done. I was wondering what your opinion is on the honda snow blowers compared to lets say the MTD. Are they worth twice the price? Do they work any better?
He did not mention it in the video, but many machines do incorporate grease fitting into the ends where the auger shaft meets the sides of the housing. The only thing is, injecting grease into the ends like that does not always manage to work its way down. If you make it a routine, rather than disassembling the whole front end, to take the shear bolts out and spin the auger freely, you will reduce the chance of it ever rusting. You will basically free up, and wear any rust that may be starting.
Dony, I just inherited by father's 1991 Honda HS521 snowblower with the GX140 engine. My question is regarding the throttle lever. There is nothing attached to it to control throttle speed (no cable and no control on the machine). You can move it if you reach underneath the cover, but it is stiff to move. Should it be left at maximum speed for normal operation? THANKS!
hey very important response to the questions i wondered about the shaft movement but hey if the owner did not want to spend the money guess u have to repsect that ..
I have a Honda HS622 Snowblower. The shear bolt is gone from the (from the front) right auger and the holes in the auger and the shaft do not align, side to side, so that a bolt will not fit through. A finish nail or wire will go through. It looks as if the auger needs to slide 1/4" toward the center but can't because the edge of the auger shaft hits the (black plastic) side of the gear case. Nothing looks to be bent or out of place in the auger housing. It was working fine just recently. Do you have suggestions on how I can align the holes on the auger shaft to allow for a new bolt? The right auger has two places for shear bolts, though only one could be used at a time because they are a 90 degree rotation from one another. Both holes have the same lack of clearance for a bolt. The left auger only has one place for a shear bolt. While operating, the left auger spins and works fine and the right does not. There is no rattle, vibration, or anything to indicate that something is out of line. Thanks, Kevin
Donyboy73 does it matter what hole the shear pins bolts go in on the impeller on each opposite side of a Honda snowblower?? I have two bolts on each end of side that it goes transverse to the auger box. The bolt head is facing away from the auger and the nut towards the auger gear!
I’ve got a HS80 and the auger won’t spin. I think the worm screw is worn. Any tricks to remove the shaft going from the 2nd stage to the gearbox on the auger? The sheer pin is removed, but looks like the shaft is rusted in place.
any idea were I could get a auger shaft for a craftsman 536.918100 they put the bolts facing the wrong way inside of the auger shoot auger struck bolts had grade 8 bolts for shear pins :/ broke gear and the shaft right were the shear pin goes or i broke the shaft getting it apart. it runs great now :)
What does it mean if u drain the oil from the gear case of an Arien 1128 and it is black and dirty looking? Does this oil need to be changed and how often with Arien l-3 synthetic gear oil? Thanks!
My neighbor who’s moving to free state Florida just gave me his HS-828 Blower, question, how does one change the Hydrostatic Trans oil ,?? Is it the lower drain plug on the left, below the oil drain, or is it the plug on the right ,??, I have no owners manual, thanks if you can help. 👍
Crap! I just drove the auger of my 20 year old Honda HS724 snowblower into the water shut off valve that sticks out of my driveway. I thought I just broke a sheer bolt. But on closer inspection, not only did I severely bend the right Auger, I broke the shaft that goes through the gear box. Sure enough, the auger is seized to the shaft. As you say, lubricating the shaft/auger should be required maintenance. Thanks to you videos, it only took 20 minutes to get the auger/gear box assembly on the bench. Now to find the parts.
honda charges a ton for sheer pins here. I just went to home depot an got some common grade bolts. Will this work. We are in a major blizzard period here and the honda store is closed. I just wonder if anyone know the difference between sheer bolt grade steel and common grade steel.. i am assuming it is the same?
that a key to thing to check when buying a used blower..if they knew to grease the shaft chances are they did the other maintenance. most dont think to do that.
People often replace the sheer pins with full out bolts, then snap goes the $600 gearbox, its amazing just how people use a sheer pin for a tow hitch since its all they could find, but then use a grade 8 bolt for an auger since we want it to crush ice lol.
Hmm , I'm surprised grease fittings weren't incorporated in the basic design . That would have been a good idea instead of remembering to remove the augers from the shafts to grease them.
I think the auger shaft is the most often overlooked object of maintenance. That, and substituting regular bolts for shear pins. As you say, lots cheaper to replace a two buck shear pin.
got a honda here and noticed the auger belt keeps popping off..after some adjustments its now to tight and is alway engaged..seem to be the only way to keep it from popping off...after looking around noticed the auger pulley has a wobble ..think the bearing bad?
Hi Don, That is why people people should keep their mowers and snowblowers maintained or bring it to someone and pay a few bucks to have it maintained. This way the gear box would of been saved for just a little preventive maintenance. People are at times penny wise and dollar foolish, Buddy
By the time u added up those parts it was over $200 dollar then probably $200 in labor that's $400 for a used machine can plan his disision to keep the price down. I couldn't notice the wobble from my iPhone lol ;)
Perhaps you might be able to help. I have an 8 HP Champion Snow Blower purchased about 10 years ago from Sears Canada. The auger shaft is able to move sideways until something touches the auger housing be it the shaft or the auger itself. The result is that the shear bolt sheared after the end of the auger caught on the carriage bolt holding the end bearing assembly to the auger housing. I need advice to be able to prevent this occurring again so that I can continue to use the machine. Thanks
you can only do what people are willing to spend they allwas asked me if this or that could be done the 1st words out of my mouth were sure how much do you want to spend
