Why There Can Never Be A Third Season of ‘Fleabag’ | 10 Minutes of Perfection

Usually, the main character of the show in "Fleabag" is able to speak to or look directly at the camera without other characters noticing. However, once Fleabag (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) gets close to the Hot Priest (Andrew Scott), all the normal rules of the show fall apart in a 10-minute sequence, revealing that these devices are even more powerful when they’re taken away. There are three main devices that make this sequence different from the eight and half episodes that lead up to it: breaking the fourth wall, the editing, and the music. The Priest is able to see Fleabag breaking the fourth wall, which forces Fleabag to change her connection to the audience. Fleabag's new connection to the Priest also affects how the show is edited. While "Fleabag" is normally edited in a jarring fashion, as Fleabag deepens her connection to the Priest, the pace of the editing is slowed down and the editor uses traditional shot coverage. Additionally, the title card theme music that plays during this sequence is different from that of all of the preceding episodes - a romantic-sounding song instead of the Greek chorus. During this perfect sequence in Amazon Studio’s "Fleabag," the filmmaking language reflects why her relationship with the audience has to end.

Hot Priest noticing Fleabag’s 4th wall breaks may be the most delightfully shocking thing I’ve seen on TV. I can’t think of any other show that so firmly established its own rules, and then shattered them so effectively with a tiny moment.

I agree. I remember my heart racing and feeling genuinely uncomfortable when the priest suddenly looked right at the camera. Somehow it felt like such an intimate relationship with Fleabag and when someone else noticed it, it felt wrong.

I feel this as well. I'd say that the moments when she turns to the camera are like when you retreat to your inner thoughts and have a conversation with yourself in an awkward moment of stress or discomfort, rather than reacting to the situation, creating an awkward silence. As you said it's as if you take on the role of your imaginary friend in your head as a coping mechanism.

I always felt like whenever Fleabag was looking at the camera, she was able to get away with it because no one in her life really saw her (even Claire as their relationship got better) which is why I absolutely loved it when the Priest noticed it and then eventually broke the fourth wall as well because it showed that she finally had someone who truly saw her and noticed when she went away, even if it was for a second

One of my favorite scenes from season 2 that I don't really hear people talk about is that scene when Fleabag and the Hot Priest finally have sex, and instead of letting the camera linger on them she pushes the camera, and by extension us the viewers, away. It's the first time we actually see flea bag choose to not let us into her private moments, and it's jarring because as a viewer you realize again that you're not just a passive watcher in flea bag's life - more so than when the priest sees us, because this is now an intentional choice by Flea Bag to not include us. And it's a direct contrast to season 1 when Flea Bag describes to us how she views sex as simply a performative act, rather than an act of intimacy, hence why she never felt the need to hide from us when she's having sex before. But then when she finally has an intimate connection she finally is present and no longer needs or wants us to be there for her - and that's truly been the theme of Season 2. As much as I love the show, I hope it never gets another season; it ended too perfectly.

Yes! This video explains season 2 really well, but it ignores the significance of season 1. I agree with you, in S1 I think we had effectively replaced Boo, or she treated us as if we were Boo - as Fleabag struggled with guilt and the loss of her friend, and had no one to share it with (bar us) so bottled up her emotions and her true feelings and reactions to life from every other character, where she would previously had be completely open with Boo. In S2 the priest effectively replaces us by jarring those 4th wall breaks and so connects with Fleabag as no character since Boo has done.

I'd hate for Fleabag to be pressured into continuing the story, like Gavin and Stacey was with the last special. TVs biggest problem atm is that studios can't seem to understand when to end a good thing, Fleabag being an exception.

I still believe that the scene form season 1, where fleabag its at her silent retreat listening to the bank manager speech is extremely underrated and is a great example of her growing and connecting with someone else beside Boo. The scene is four minutes long and fleabag doesnt look at the camera once, she listen to the bank manager adn at the end she just says seven words, which is the first time she says what she is really feeling out loud. I highly recommend watching that scene again, I cry everytime i do, is just so beautiful

Wholeheartedly agree! It always baffled me that how come nobody is talking this part. This was the very moment that kicked me in the stomach and where I realize this show is so much more than just brilliant British humor, snippy comebacks and 4th wall breaking. Also the bank manager’s actor Hugh Dennis is actually one among the great BBC recurring comedian gangs, which makes it all the more funny and bizarre 😁

There's another really key scene in season 2 in which fleabag never talks to the audience, which is her conversation with Belinda. I think that was another moment when she actually felt close to someone. I think she maybe saw herself in Belinda. And how intently she took in Belinda's wisdom changed her from that point on. That one moment when Belinda says "people are all we've got" felt like a big breakthrough moment for Fleabag, because up until the end of season two, "we" were all she had.

I don't think anyone here is denying it. By the end, you really felt you knew her and the difficulties she felt with her family, and I think that's why it's sad when she walks away - your friend is leaving and you won't know what happens to her. But I think she will be alright :)

Something I noticed immediately was when she met the priest outside for a smoke the first time she looked back at him and was staring directly into the camera- but she wasn’t looking at us. She was looking at the priest. Signaling that the priest and her had an immediate intimate connection.

I kept on thinking throughout both seasons, that "us" is actually Fleabag's friend Boo. And that it's her that Fleabag keeps sharing things with, even though Boo is gone. And now after this explanation I still think so. And I think that little by little, as Fleabag indeed heals from her inner drama and grief, she becomes less dependant on Boo, and then in the very last episode she finally lets her go and walks away.

Me too, I got the emotional gut punch and sobbed for quite awhile after the show ended (watched it all in one go). It's been a week and I'm still unpacking the feelings it shook loose - it didn't hit me quite the same as Jojo Rabbit, but about as hard! I find myself sifting through memories and signs of my own growth since I was in my late twenties and early thirties. I'm nowhere near as funny as Fleabag, but I do have very few people to talk to and have made drastic changes in how open I am with others. Deeply identify with the idea that "I am Fleabag."

Such a fantastic show. I think the shift in any style also indicates her increasing stability after such emotional turmoil. In an interview, Waller-Bridge said her fourth wall breaking address to camera was a reference to her feeling as if she is always performing… always creating a character for someone else so she can protect her own vulnerability. It’s also a nod to the original stage production that consisted of her one woman performance addressed directly to the audience like a sort of confession. Of course, with the priest, he allows her to become herself with him, which is brilliantly executed by his ability to REALLY see her as no one else has. In that respect, it makes sense that they don’t stay together. Their relationship has healed her, now she must get to know herself again. And she doesn’t need to perform for us anymore to get through life.

It is exceedingly rare that I cry about the end of a relationship in a fictional show, but I cried so hard at the end of Fleabag and the Hot Priest that I can't watch that episode again. It shouldn't have ended. It was the best, most true, most loving versions of themselves that the catholic church demanded he give up, and I refuse to believe it was necessary! A Testament to the power and beauty of this show that I felt so strongly.

I think the way she's breaking the 4th wall is essentially pouring all the love she has in her somewhere. Remember what Boo said? "It's gotta go somewhere". When her mother died and then Boo, she has to find another outlet for that love. That also ties into what her dad said - she has much more love than everyone else and that's what makes it painful for her. The Priest notices her talking to us, because he listens to her, she matters to him more, her love is important to him

The weird part about Fleabag is that it, at least for me, made me genuinely care about the character. I was invested in her well-being to an extent that is uncommon for fictional characters. So on the one hand, from an entertainment perspective, I very much would love to see a season 3. On the other hand, knowing how unhealthy her relationship with us the audience really was, I almost feel like I'm actively hoping for someone else's pain. I cannot, myself, see a path for a season 3 that doesn't completely betray tons of character development or subject Fleabag to an additional trauma. But then again the writing for this series was so stunningly original and creative that perhaps that's just a failure of imagination on my part.

In this series, the normal is that fleabag breaks the fourth wall, but we as spectators are outside the reach of the characters, so we are accomplices of her. We can only interact with fleabag, but in that moment in the coffee shop, the priest sees directly to us, so we are also vulnerable not only fleabag, breaking even further the fourth wall

this may be too personal but whatever, it's the internet. i cried at the finale but not for the reason you'd think (hot priest and flea never being together). i cried because i got so attached to flea. in the second season i began to look at her and wait for her to look back at me. and if she didnt i'd be disappointed. and if she did i'd smile back or whatever face was needed in the scenario (for example claire breaking up with weaky -- yes, weaky), because i felt she was seeing me. i get so involved into shows and fictional characters that it all feels so real. so at the end when she turns and shakes her head at the camera (i wasnt yet aware that the series was completely finished and there wouldnt be a third), there was a moment of absolute shock. like "what do you mean?" when i knew exactly what she meant. i really felt as if someone i loved was leaving me behind, because it was something the both of us needed. and for some reason i felt so fragile and emotional. when she started walking away i was just thinking "no, you cant go. no." i know i sound utterly insane right now but it's just how i felt, i guess. and then she turned again to wave goodbye and it all washed over me, and i just knew. i just knew i'd never see flea again, not for a long time at least. it really felt like saying goodbye, because in 12 short episodes you absolutely fell in love with her (platonically) and all her flaws. i think it was necessary for the series to end when it did -- not that im happy about it. because if it hadn't i may have gotten too attached. i sat for a few minutes crying at the end, then searched up if there'd be another season (even though i knew deep down there wouldnt be), then had to go to the bathroom and silently cry while looking at myself in the mirror and realising i got attached to someone who doesn't truly exist.

That sounds very similar to how you feel at the end of reading a book you truly loved. You don’t slow down how quickly you’re reading it bc you are so into the characters and the storylines and everything else you love but when it eventually ends… for a small period of time… you can’t quite believe it’s over. You have a little difficulty putting yourself back into your normal RL mindset bc you were so caught up in whatever was happening in the novel that returning to RL feels slightly off. (Or at least, that’s how I feel…) 🥰🥰

If I sit and start to think about the second season of Fleabag too much, I start to cry. There is such an intimacy in it that is hard to put into words. I often identify with the self-destructive nature of Fleabag. Even who she chose to fall in love with - the Priest. It was doomed from the start. She uses us as a sounding board for her snark and one liners and even though we are the most let in (until the Priest), she keeps us at an arm's length by not telling us the full story of Boo in season 1 until it is forced out in the open. When the jump cuts and wall breaking stops and is noticed by the Priest, she freaks out at first and slowly needs us less and less until she tells us not to follow her and we get one super long shot of her walking away and leaving us at the bus stop. It's so smart and painful and hopeful and real. God I love this show. PWB is so brilliant

it’s almost like in the second season, the show becomes MORE like a traditional TV show and fleabag herself kind of... fades away and becomes another TV character. she goes back to where she’s supposed to go. it would be good for US if she kept talking to us, but it’s not good for her or her development.

when the 180 Degree rule is ignored, it feels like we as a viewer can be literally anywhere in fleabags mind, which makes us feel closer to her - but when we keep that rule while he is with the priest, it's kind of like she only allows a certain view on it, cause she feels more connected with the priest than us

this might be a bit of a stretch, but i loved how the relationship between Fleabag and her Dad changed throughout and how it was shown by cigarettes! In most of the episodes, you can see that their relationship is strained and he doesn't feel comfortable around her. He even admits to not liking her, despite her being his daughter. Fleabag offers her Dad a cigarette every time they're alone together outside, and he mostly says no, which shows how he isn't really letting her in and they still aren't very close. However, in the last episode (i think its the last one?) Fleabag offers her Dad a cigarette and he accepts for the first time in the whole show. Maybe this means he's finally feeling more connected to her, or their relationship is growing stronger. Or maybe ive just over analysed this, but its a very clever thing to put in :)

I've watched the whole series in a day basically, and the joy of being her secret friend, whom she could talk to without feeling judged, was incredible. I related to her and her life, her loss and her love life. She became almost as a close friend to mine, that I was sure I knew perfectly well. I will miss dearly these moments. Thanks, Fleabag.

I knew when watching it that we are there to support her through her grief, but the sequence with the priest communicated this so brilliantly. She has a barrier up to all intimate connections but once she opens up the link to us slowly breaks as we are no longer needed. Regardless of how much I loved this show, it had the most perfect ending and should never get a third season.

I'm still a bit heartbroken by the end. I cried quite a bit when she "left us behind". When I thought a lot about it afterwards, I understood the decision and I can understand that their won't be a season 3. Doesn't make it hurt any less though. I love this show so much, I got way too emotionally invested. I guess I will watch it again in the next couple of days and then cry again ^^'

It is exceedingly rare that I cry about the end of a relationship in a fictional show, but I cried so hard at the end of Fleabag and the Hot Priest's relationship that I can't watch that episode again. It hurt too much. They shouldn't have ended. It was the best, most true, most loving versions of themselves that the catholic church demanded he give up, and I refuse to believe it was necessary! I know it's a Testament to the power and beauty of this show that I felt it all so strongly.

in the last scene of the show, I actually felt not only our beloved fleabag refusing to let us follow behind her, but also that she is answering to my question: "maybe you will be together after all???" and she is just like "no, but that's how it should be". and in her parting look, I saw pure sadness, complete acceptance and farewell to the viewer, that is, to me, to us. this is the first tv series in my life, when I accepted a sad end and fully agree with the ending. this is life. i love fleabag with all my heart thx for such a great video!

The last three seconds of this show were utterly perfect. Every second of every show for three seaons led up to that moment, that slight shake of the head. It was unexpected, but morally complete. Our heroine had at last found her own path, some sense of meaning that would guide her on - and no longer needed our complicity to make sense of her world.

This show is a masterpiece. I didn't know the subtleties it had with editing, filming, writing. Also, I felt like a character with fleabag herself and the moment that priest confronted her at first, I got scared, as if we both got exposed. Never felt so involved in any show. I love how unique the show is, with all awkward comedy and craziness. Honestly, I would LOVE a season 3, but if that destroys all the character developments and plots then don't spoil it. I'll just rewatch the 2 seasons till I die.😭

Nice breakdown! It’s so interesting to examine how this fourth-wall breaking element is like an homage to the original play (wherein Fleabag shows us her entire world through her speech and staring at us), but is only an impactful and jarring departure BECAUSE of the implied invisibility of the camera. One of the most noticeable characteristics of the show is only possible film-a medium it wasn’t conceived for. I interpreted the ending as Fleabag leaving us behind because she no longer fears being alone. The priest ‘rejected’ her, but she doesn’t feel doomed. So she doesn’t need to cling to us anymore. She lets him go, and she lets us go.

i love fleabag so much. You get such a deep connection with her and i was happy that she is opening up. After the last scene, when she finally says goodbye, showing us that she healed and can go on alone now is so beautiful. But still, i was completly heartbroken and actually crying my eyes out when she was leaving us behind with that broken smile and little gesture. What a great show

It's like giving up an imaginary friend. From the music, to the scene cuts, to the breaking of morals and norms as a way to insulate herself from the rest of society, to the uncomfortable conversations, the breaking of the 4th wall with ease, this series impresses me again and again. It's a very strange masterpiece and the end is probably a nice cut from one life to another.... but I want a season 3 and 4....
