I read in a book that today, humans don't know how to be bored. We're always stimulated in some way; watching, listening or doing something to fill the time that we never just sit there and do nothing. Some of the greatest inventions or creations were born out of boredom. If you sit there long enough doing nothing, time will go by much slower, and you'll have the space to think about what you actually want to do. I think the key to a hobby is doing something that is fulfilling so that the satisfaction keeps you coming and doing it again.

Humans have never just sat around and been bored. There has always been something that needed to be done. Before the internet, dishwashers, cell phones, and packaged meals, living life and surviving was a full time job. And when people weren't working, they were reading, writing, listening to the radio, visiting each other, talking to each other, playing games, gardening, taking walks in nature, drawing, etc. So to say humans don't know how to be bored today, like we ever knew how to be bored, is false. Society has never thought it beneficial to be bored.

@@serenityjewel I agree. Back in the day, most people didn't have time to be bored. If they sat around doing nothing, important tasks and chores would be neglected. They didn't have the luxury to sit around and do nothing until ideas popped into their heads.

You're right, in highschool I was the queen of hobbies, and then near the end of university I dropped alot of them because idk, I felt that was what adulting is. But in the last 3 years I reclaimed my hobby Queen crown and play rec volleyball, basketball and soccer, play the bass, the guitar, roller skate, skateboard, and play board games with my friends. All at my big age of 27 😂 I have never been in a better state of mind.. I'm convinced the key to adulting gracefully is to hold on to that childhood playfulness

As an adult woman I started collecting Barbie dolls for profit. Then I discovered that the same joy I found in playing with Barbie as a child is still there! I haven't made a profit because I decided to keep the dolls for myself! I get hours of peace and pleasure dressing them up and making up stories about them. Been there! I'm 25 and only just starting having hobbies as an adult about a year ago when I started a 9-5 and realised how I really don't want my job to be where my value and success markers come from. Now I go climbing, cook, bake, read and workout and feel so much more relaxed after an evening of committing time to these rather than binging Netflix (though that's still fine on occasion) 😉

Sitting in silence, resting...gosh simply just living. Let's not complicate our lives, there's a lot going on already we have to accomplish. Just living and being okay is good enough to me. Stressing about stuff like this eventually gets you more worked up than you would hve been just living your life in my opinion. I feel like if you can fit specific well defined hobbies in your life great, if you can't, its ok too. And lastly, hobbies do not have to be sophisticated western concept activities e.g violins, etc etc also beware of your hobby could slowly turn into a stress factor in your life or work. It happens where people start out loving something e.g singing for recreation and end up hating it

Many people would consider taking care of plants or baking, a hobby, which both are something I do regularly but I don't want/like to call them my hobbies because I just consider them a part of my life, and not something that I specifically do as extra activities. And yeah, I completely agree that forcing yourself to get a hobby is not needed and can bring more bad than good. But sometimes we might be doing something that we don't see as a hobby, but a daily activity, while it actually can be called one.

Silence and rest are necessary components of a healthy life but if that's all you're doing, it's not rejuvenating. Study after study has shown that experiencing joy of some kind it's necessary for a satisfactory life. A hobby is something you do that you enjoy. It's not a burden. At the end of the day, no one has ever been on their death bed and said "I'm so glad I say on the couch and did nothing with my life."

It’s a great thing to push yourself in life, trying new hobbies and learning new things ,even if it’s hard , will make you more intelligent, teach you discipline, can help you in other aspects in your life as well, and will keep your mind busy with something positive. Life is not all about taking the easy way, if you stay where you are comfortable all the time, you won’t really give yourself the opportunity to grow. Also learning new hobbies will help you develop as a person and expand your mind. Getting “worked up” doesn’t necessarily have to be seen as a negative thing, it’s good to work hard and do things you might not want to do , it’s far more inspiring to see someone who pushes themselves to learn something new than just be lazy or take it easy . There’s nothing wrong with “simply just living” however if you do that for the rest of your life you will miss the experiences that let’s say learning the piano, or learning to paint may give you. I see this attitude a lot in society today, people don’t want to do things that are hard and not seen as “fun”, but the magic of life lies within seeing beyond that instant gratification and actually setting your mind to something and accomplishing it ,Just my opinion.

I agree. I work a physically demanding job and the thought of being active during my days off is a no. I just want to relax and do relaxing things. Yet it stresses me out when people ask if I have any hobbies and I say I just like to relax and they think I'm lazy. Makes me feel like I always have to be up and out. The only hobby that would interest me is reading (because I'm relaxing and not thinking much.)

YES! I had the same thoughts the other day! I found this out the other day when I started to make candles. I saw so many of these cool candles and realised I can actually try and make them at home, they must not be perfect but it would be cool. And as I was waiting for the supplies to arrive, I was looking at some videos on how to make the candles and EVERYTHING was about how much scent you can add to sell them and the guidelines etc, and I noticed myself getting stressed out about how to make these candles so that I can sell them… and then I paused and though to myself: WHY AM I THINKING LIKE THIS? I haven‘t even tried making a candle once and I am already stressing about selling them?! This is not right. So, I vowed to myself to make my candles, enjoy them and never ever sell a single one.

@@billyb4790well said. We all spend our free hours and minutes doing something for pleasure or to pass time. When I was at my lowest self esteem I realized my only hobbies were watching tv and scrolling online. If one takes true enjoyment out of that then fine, let those be your hobbies. This is so annoyingly true. Hustle culture has permeated every aspect of our lives and makes us feel guilty for taking any sort of unproductive leisure time. I too am tempted to overachieve and "monetize" my hobbies, which is why I've started dedicating time to things that are good for me and are generally non monetizeable. I stopped viewing working out and cooking as chores but instead as hobbies. Lifting weights helped me game-ify workouts by adding distinct levels of challenge and improvement with every plate I add to the barbell. Cooking has taken on a more fun tone as I've started experimenting with new appliances, techniques, and ambitious recipes (cooking when you're not hungry helps you not get frustrated). Blasting music I love throughout it all helps get me out of my head and lift my spirits while I do it. It's simple, but hobbies are meant to be fun and give you a mental break, not add another layer of competition and stress to your life. But it's important not to forget that true rest is necessary too! Sometimes life gets in the way of us being able to enjoy our hobbies, and we need a break. Last night I rediscovered the simple joy of heating up some frozen dumplings, having a drink, and watching a silly TV show with some ice cream. How crazy is it that rest is now viewed as something exotic? Our lives are very stressful and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves, and it's alright to take a real break every once in a while without guilt.

What an excellent video. I have amassed so many hobbies since 2016, I seldom (if ever) experience the actual feeling of “boredom.” Backstory: 2016 is when I finished my Masters Degree after completing my JD. During those four years, anything I had remotely resembling a hobby insidiously melted out of my life. Since 2016, I’ve gotten back into old “hobbies” but have so many brand new ones, because now I’m INTENTIONAL about my hobbies (if that makes sense). I knit, embroider, do rock art painting, grow bonsai and succulents, make jewelry, cook, do reselling, create RU-vid content, enjoy interior design and more - all while having a full-time career as a lawyer. I believe the act of creation for creation’s sake is SO critical for mental and emotional well-being.

I am in the same boat!! I always thought that I was the only one that didn't have a hobby because all my friends have some kind of hobby or past time. I always wished I had a hobby, I came to the realization the other day while talking to my husband that I was always told as a pre-teen and teenager that when you grow up all there is left for you is work and responsibilities. No play, no fun, and definitely no time. So I concluded that there would be no hobbies because if that is what adulting is thheeennn maybe I can't get involved in any of my interests. Ultimately, I grew up (in my mid 20's now) and realizing that I don't have a hobby. I am also on a journey to find a hobby or hobbies, if I'm lucky and to dismantle the belief system that adulting is hard and boring and just unenjoyable. Love your content Adella. Hi. An easy way to start/find a hobby to incorporate it into something you already do. For example: you have to eat right? Find some new culinary techniques and recipes to try. If you like being active, find a local adult sports league or try bodybuilding or powerlifting instead of just going to the gym. Volunteering is another great “hobby”. I have found that giving back to my community has been very rewarding (and it’s something that can’t monetized!) I hope this helps! 😊

Somehow when I get back into it for the day - I feel like I have better things I should be doing, I feel less joy?- from playing, I am also lacking friends in game and feel a bit lonely. I think you're accurate. I feel the lack of hobbies have caused frustrations. p.s I get what you mean. Exercising isn't a hobby 😭 skincare isn't a hobby 😭 cleaning isn't a hobby 😭 Haha 😊 //speaking light hearted-ly Thank you for the videos! ❣️

I once had a sewing hobby, which I stopped because it turned into a business and started hating it. Now I'm trying to pick it up again as a true hobby. Last year I picked up crochet, getting whispers to turn it into a business and I'm afraid I'll end up hating it too. That is the risk in the world of hustle culture and passion chasing.

The great thing about hobbies is that you can try so many things and you don't need to be great at them. Plus you can start and stop whenever you want. As long as you get enjoyment from whatever you're doing, that's what matters. I have had different hobbies throughout the years like painting, drawing, reading, running, crocheting, writing, crafts, etc. I start and stop them all the time and had to learn to not be guilty that I wasn't monetizing them but in reality I'm not great at any of them, but they all make me happy.

I could def spend more time doing these, but I enjoy baking, reading, writing, yoga, and cooking (when I have time to experiment and try out new recipes). I'd like to try out pottery, painting, and tennis! Tennis seems like it would be a fun activity to do with friends

Great video Adella. Your comment section is brilliant as per! I've been meaning for several months to begin learning how to play the guitar. I also find it reasonably fun or at least creative (not when I'm in a rush to actually go somewhere) to do makeup looks - essentially painting my face lol.

I’m learning Italian, gardening, playing piano, embroidering, and I exercise. My husband plays drums, wood works, is also learning Italian, and likes making chocolates. I quit my job in 2020 and am a stay at home mom/ home maker. He works a traditional 40 hour/week job. Having one person at home to take care of everything has freed up time for both of us to enjoy hobbies and each other!

yes! I have a lot of hobbies because there is so much I want to do!! I don't know why my brain operates like this but I just want to try everything!! I like dancing/roller skating/making art. I'm almost more invested in hobbies than my career. It's a blessing/curse. I am never bored but often tired lol

this video is so timely. i was just thinking how my lack of hobbies frustrate me and i started to look up different hobbies. i’d say my hobbies are movies and couponing but they change constantly. i’d love to start making body care and exercising.

Yeah, I use to be part of an acting company which I did outside of full time work (and separate to exercising and occasional freelancing), and I did a dance class as well, which were temporarily stopped once the pandemic hit. Now that all of this is open again... I need to go back! It really does make a difference.

This is such an interesting topic to explore. I never thought of or noticed the difference between active resting and passive resting. However, now that you point it out, I realize thrive when I have a balance of both. My hobbies are running and barre3. I'm actually "good at" running but not good enough to go pro at 42. LOL! I work at my local Barre3 studio so I guess I've monetized that, but it's very part time and my livelihood doesn't rely on the imcome. I view it as more money for my leggings and coffee.

I was literally just thinking about this last night!! All I do is work, and when I think about trying something new, I think about how I can monetize it. I love painting and have been doing that occasionally, but I think that's something I can do more frequently. I'm also interested in taking dance classes because I want to learn how to pick up choreography. Maybe that's something you can try!

Living in a new state (abt 4 years ago) , Creating content, and Only working is draining. My mom told me I needed something to do, her questions were " what keeps you going" and "what do you look forward to weekly"? I didn't have an answer. So I did a few trial classes for different activities and sports. I wanted something I could grow in, so I now do pole dancing, aerial yoga, and next year I am taking on figure skating. Whatever sticks will stick but i enjoy trying out new activities. I feel like classes force me to keep up with an activity vs me just picking a day and trying to stay with it.

I've got a few random ones but I almost don't count them and am looking to figure out time for more. My current ones - my dog, books (audiobooks), podcasts/learning. What I'm looking for implementing - some physical activity that I'll do consistently, something creative/creating something with my hands. Because my job is computer-based this is a good way to switch off from the screen while feeling fulfilled.

I wish I had more time to do hobbies I used to do like playing the clarinet, biking, and playing tennis. My newest hobby acrylic painting. I recently deleted social media so that I will have more time to participate in activities that nourish my mind and body!

One of my hobbies that I find really rewarding is knitting. I would always watch a lot of youtube and netflix, and once I started knitting I realised, I can knit while still watching those things! It's great because it feels semi productive, and is also fun. It's like simultaneous active and passive recreation, and although it does cost more money than you'd expect especially for nice yarn, at the end of it I have a lovely jumper to wear and I still got to binge watch a netflix series :) I started in January 2020 so you know ... that was a good hobby to start at the time. I got a lot of practice.

I needed this! I work 5:30 AM-2 PM most days so when I come home I just lie down and decompress. Then when the weekend comes around my body is confused by the ability to sleep in. I'll have to try more active recreation to get out of this cycle...

My new hobby: I signed up to a beginner's archery course (in Beckenham). It's two hours every Sunday morning, and is physically active but not at all tiring. I meet my friend there, so it is also a social thing. There is a clear measurement of progress (i.e. hitting the target) and it engages the body and the brain (you would be surprised how much technique there is to remember!). It's not something you can do every day, but that suits me, because otherwise I'd feel pressure to practice every day (like learning an instrument).

My regular hobbies are playing the piano, learning french (its my 3rd lang, went back to french after dropping german for a hot minute), baking/cooking, swimming, playing squash and watching anime. My more occasional hobbies are: sewing(clothes, but I used to do cross stitching as well when I was a kid), reading, badminton reading manga... ill edit this as I remember but Im gonna take a fat minute to get ideas cuz I honestly can never be bothered to have nothing to do. Try picking up a sport, maybe ice sport? Ice skating for example. An instrument? Violin, piano ... cooking? Its a life skill to brag about. An artsy hobby? Digital art or physical like drawing, coloring, painting, sculpting... Gardening, roller skating, skateboarding, longboarding, jewelry making, yoga, studying a science for fun. Girl just look at other youtubers and their hobbies and see what you like, thats it. After having a bunch of hobbies though I would really stress getting into anime and manga cuz the rest of entertainement is lacking something this art has, its way better to binge an anime than binge some Netflix show, shorter episodes as well... cmon girl im a classical pianist recommending anime and manga, if its good its good. Also volunteering in any shape is a great hobby

Ok so I don't have consistent hobbies either...and I've been really thinking I need to get a new hobby/be more intentional with hobbies in general. I like to read and hike and do yoga and lift weights, but I don't do them consistently enough for them to *really* be hobbies. Like, I too often slide into passive relaxation over a hobby I would actually enjoy more. It's a problem! The quote you mentioned about everyone needing to be as vigilant about their hobbies as they are with their work really resonated with me. My goal is to be more intentional about the hobbies I have so I enjoy my free time more. I also want to take up linocutting/printmaking.

I’m learning about applying makeup. I’ve always wore makeup; but I never really knew how to do makeup beyond a little bit of mascara blush and lipgloss. I’m learning how to do the Instagram model makeup look. I tried a makeup tutorial here on RU-vid and did well up until the lashes. My falsies always end up lopsided which is why I haven’t been wearing them

What I used to do before I got old: knitting, crochet, embroidery, and cross stitch. My hands can't hold a needle or a hook more than ten minutes anymore. My eyesight has gotten so bad I can't thread any kind of needle. So I have decided to try paint pouring, resin, and clay crafts. Yes, I have a respirator. I have also seen a lot of videos about cardboard crafts. If there is one thing I have a lot of is cardboard.

Just try things. I had only played tennis once or twice in my life and I started playing tennis this year. I love it and can see myself playing it more in the future. Since I had only played it once and no one I know is super into tennis, I would have gone my whole life without knowing how much fun it is for me if I didn't just try it. Tbh, I'm waking up this new more athletic side to myself in my twenties which is fun. What I'm trying to say is so do not limit yourself. Don't wait for other people to show you their hobbies, treat it like an adventure to explore different hobbies for yourself I do believe this helps people's mental health. That Precious jump scare doesn't help mine tho lol, I wasn't ready.
