Thank you for your kind comments all. My last full blood Russian ex used to say to me "but your soul is fully Russian". : D I must admit I infinitely more Russian than British. Even my phone ringtone is Katyusha. hehe And my Siberian cat is named Mishka in honour of the Olympic mascot my grandmother brought me from Russia. : D I think I will return to my ancestral home sooner or later. Right now, I just want to see the rightful Russian lands liberated as easily as possible. Britain is in a mess... mainly culturally. Whereas Russia has good cause to be proud of the direction it is heading.

Because of the exchange rate, it may indeed seem that salaries in Russia are very low, but this is a deceptive statement. In order to understand whether salaries are high or low in any given country, it is necessary to understand what a resident of that country, in this case Russia, can afford to buy with his/her salary, whether he/she can save money. And in this context it will turn out that many westerners with their seemingly large salaries live poorer and have less than the residents of Russia.

You are right! We went through rough times in 90-s. Like ANY country goes through rough times in their history. What shocks me though is how brainwashed western people can be when they think of modern Russia as if it is still the same as 30 years ago. I would compare it with Great Depression in USA when millions died of hunger, some families had to sell their children as they were not able to provide enough food for them. 30 years later the same country became the leading economy in the world. Should we in Russia think of the USA as if they are still in 1930-s, begging for a piece of bread? Sounds crazy, right? This how crazy westerners sound when they say/think this about Russia. Well, too much propaganda and bad education....

"And we remember every snobby Western m-f…er who ....." Excuse me, this Westerner remembers reading what happened to your country in the 1990s, and reading of the plight of ordinary people who suddenly found that they had no jobs, no income and no future. It wasn't pleasant reading. I was not happy to read of how such a great nation had been brought so low. So I - and many other people - can understand why so many Russians support Putin. However, Russia has debased itself again by murdering ordinary civilians in the parts of Ukraine that they have invaded. To add to these crimes, they have also inflicted barbaric torture upon civilians. You may have risen again from the ashes economically speaking, but you are still the same debased nation you were in the past.

My comment to western person about gdp: average US person makes a 5k per month after taxes or before? Does an average American own one or two apartments, land and summer house? Cause it’s a very common situation for Russians. And I’ve heard many times, there are lots of Americans who own nothing and pays his mortgage life long, which is very uncomfortable and depressing life by Russian standards. The thing is, owning an appartment and making 300-500$ pro person in Russia = descent life, just like a middle class person from Europe. My perception is that many people in the West don’t understand the reality’s of Russia, being heavily influenced by media, and that’s not new, it’s been like that for centuries, because Russia and the West were rivals for influence, dominance and resources always. Also I’ve noticed there are lots of people from the West who don’t realise that GDP is just one criteria which doesn’t reflect the real living standards in different societies. One have to know cultural, political, historical context of the society. For example a person from Russian provincial city earning 385$ per month is obviously poor, judging from gdp perspective, and that’s actually the most important criteria in todays media and in the mind of an average westerner. In reality, that person, earning 385$ per month has 2 apartments from his grandparents, in 1 he lives himself and the other for rent. Then there is a common practice among Russian employers to pay big part of the salary unofficial to avoid taxation. And you will not ever find this information in the gdp Ratings. Then this person has high standard education for his children and healthcare for free. All the services, cafe, cinema very cheap in Russia compared to western world. So, it turns out, our „poor“ guy is actually doing very well and it’s not visible from outside of the Russia, for an average westerner who can only rely on gdp comparisation and western media, historical stereotypes. And that average Russian doesn’t work his ass off for this standard of living, he doesn’t really fear to lose his job, because he owns a property and has a good education which costed him 500$ /semester at max or for free if he was good at high school. And that’s only economic part of the societies, covering only the very average standard of living, not mentioning that there are several millions of Russians who live much better than that. I didn’t even start with safety issue and cultural aspects. You’ve been lied to your whole life and will never have courage to acknowledge it even for yourself. P.S it’s not about who is better, we are all just humans after all, irrational, struggling to survive for the most part, ordinary mortals. In that regard, all the internet debates about who have better cars and salaries are laughable. My comment is simply about critical thinking in the truest meaning of the word.

@@andreyiforoff8891 When I lived most of my life in California cost of living was extremely high due to the number of things to be paid for is greater in number than anywhere else. GDP is a false scale and PPP is much more realistic but does not count the vast number if additional expenses on has in the US. My basic cost of living in a home that was fully owned my me, in Marin Country in California was $23,000 each month but I gave all my assets and businesses away to employees, cars to girlfriends, an airplane to a flight school in the end of 1999. I took $6000 and 2 suit cases and moved to St Petersburg Russia. That $6000 lasted a long time bust eventually I started a business in a field I never worked in and found hiring people was hard, everyone one I interviewed sounded too good to be true but I discovered that regardless of degree subject every person was so incredibly competent. So instead of worrying about which of the very good were best, I just announced to the office staff that is anyone known anyone wanting a job, tell them to start Monday morning. In 18 years and peak head count of 83 I never once had to fire anyone. The level of honesty and competence was amazing, In the US one has to put 6 people on probation trial to get 1 keeper, someone who knew even 1/2 of what they claimed. In Russia pick anyone off the street and the are a positive resource. Another major difference is everyone gets along. It is true, those with different beliefs get a long well with anyone regardless of their beliefs being different. Another difference is that everyone is highly cultured, the bottom 97% of Americans have never had access to performing arts such as ballet or opera. The last time in NYC with my Russian GF she spotted an a for an opera we both liked so I headed off to get the tickets, I found that the theater was the MET and the tickets were $1600!!!!!!, The performance was good but not like in Russia from 6-8 opera houses within walking distance of my city center apartment with better theater, sets, performance, conductor and acoustics. Every 10 year old here in St Petersburg has experienced better performances than the 1 in 25,000 adults in the US has ever had even one opera one opera experience.

It was amazing and it's a pite that I couldn't visit more places. As a tourist, I loved it so much. I found Edinburgh to be a perfect combination and equilibrium between historical and modern aspects, as well as the sea, despite being cold it's stunning to be close to the sea and hills at the same time. Then I visited the Lake District in England and spoke to some British people. Paradoxically, they had never been to Scotland, even though it's so close. They were surprised that I loved it so much and made dozens of compliments about the nature and architecture, but I understand that not everyone in England take Scotland for granted and also it happens all over the world, also with russians as well, we do not appreciate what we have and what is close to us. I'm from Moscow and I am very glad that you did an honest review.

Thank you for articulating everything clearly and precisely. Recently, President Putin said that non-traditional people are not persecuted, but only they should not take their personal lives outside the walls of their bedrooms and houses. And rightly so. Society should be guided by the lifestyle of the majority and raise children traditionally, but when they become adults, let them then determine with whom to live and sleep. I agree with your other principles and it is a pity that Europe is degrading. I love Scotland, the poet Robert Burns and the novelist Walter Scott are the ones I first read when I learned English.

so when you say non traditional does that also extend to political views like opposition to the war in ukraine? If you say anything critical of the war or Putin or the Orthodox church in public, can't you be immediately arrested? Look what happened to Navalny and Nemstov and Nadia Tolokno. That is not what a free society is, it is a fascist dictatorship.

Be very glad you are at the age you currently are as moving to Russia is much easy to do when young. I am afraid that time has passed me by as I a now 75 years old. The strength and health is now gone. My family many years back emigrated from the Isle of Skye from the Clan McLeod. If I was your age, I would definitely consider moving to Russia because of the unstable social changes in most Western Countries. Sadly these are changes previously unknown in the History of Mankind. Yekaterinburg - the best kept secret of Russia. It is called 'the Capital of Ural' for a reason. Fourth biggest by population and at least used to be third biggest by economy - that is after Moscow and Saint Pete, both of which have the 'city of the federal importance' status btw. I have said 'best kept secret' as a joke, but during the Soviet Union it used to be a closed city - people could not visit it unless they had a reason. The whole region is where the various industries were evacuated during the WW2 and they have stayed because there was not much reason to undertake the gargantuan task of moving them for a second time. Lots of undustries here. Historically a mining town, it have had the 'factory of factories' built which would produce heavy industrial equipment. Most of the Russian tanks are still produced in the Ural region. Yekat is producing self-propelled artillery units and surface-to-air missile platforms. The Soviet military nuclear project's development partially took place in the region (uranium- and plutonium-enriching reactors). Big transport hub on the Trans-Siberian railway. It's that kind of a city. Pretty chill and advanced even though the development is lagging behind the two main capitals a little bit. Ah, take all the metro stations and wash your streets twice a day why won't you. We will breathe some more smog it's no problem. Cities of federal importance. We understan xD

Heading to Russia sounds strange but during the 30s many Americans admired Germany, going so far as to immigrate. Student groups visited with glowing reviews. Several groups in the US actively supported German aims and spread propaganda. Like Russia, there was no opposition, free press, independent judiciary and all media was censored. Students were militarized with an emphasis on "enemies" and retribution. Laws forbidding protest existed though none quite as crazy as giving 10 years for posting a picture of a fire or holding up a blank sign. We fled the USSR when I was little though my parents have wild tales. Since then I've returned numerous times. Each visit the mood darkened. Moscow was 0bsessed with becoming Western though the vast majority is ugly, Stalinist concrete apartment towers. Moscow was expensive "for what you got". The food was OK -very good at spots. We preferred Taras Bulba or (best) the food trucks. Moscow and Russia are so different as to seem different countries. Drive a little and salaries drop to $400 range.

Good analysis. I would agree that the west is in “decline” but overall it is a slow decline, otherwise why would all the richest people in the world set up base in USA. I think the biggest problem foreigners will face in Russia is finding a job that will provide them enough income for a comfortable life. I guess another question I have is why are western countries letting crime get out of hand, how does it benefit society or even the ruling elites?
@AlexanderTch
@AlexanderTch Месяц назад
Why do you think that it's problem to find job in Russia. Russia quickly develops and economy grows. Unemployment rate in Russia is lowest in history and and 10 times lower than in Western Europe. Russian businesses now suffer from lack of job force and Russia is forces to import work force from abroad. People with fluent knowledge of foreign language won't have difficulties to find a job, moreover, many foreign companies operate in Russia.

The contrast between the media and what can be shown just by looking at daily life is staggering. Granted, most of the footage is coming from upscale and "nice" areas and there are certainly poor and underdeveloped regions in Russia. However, as a whole, the country is modern and has a well-diversified economy with a strong industrial base. Like it or not, the country is going to stick around and have a say in international matters. My biggest worries for Russia include low birth rate and public sector corruption. If those problems can be (somewhat solved) they aren't doing all that poorly.
