Walking backwards can have powerful healing effects on osteoarthritis. Something as simple as walking in reverse can help give your joints what they need to get some pain relief. Walking forwards tends to stress the same parts of the joint over and over again. Whereas walking backwards can help stress different parts of the joint that aren't irritated. It's just like if someone was helping you on a project, one part of the joint does it's work moving forwards and the other helps out when moving backwards. Joint pain tends to flare when one part of the joint is too stressed and doing too much of the work. Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and arthritis specialist with Keep the Adventure Alive and her clients as they show you how feasible it is to add backwards walking or even running to your training routine. Please make sure you are confident with walking before you begin running as moving backwards does require balance and coordination.
