Indonesian cartoons from the 90s to 2000s It's even weird for us Indonesians to watch since the dawn of social media prevalence in Indonesia lol (although unfortunately, you're going to need fellow Indonesians to provide English subtitles for your americano anglonese speaks beri c00le beri niece :DDD
When you figure out what FLCL is really about, it's not weird at all. It's symbolism about puberty and growing up, but also adult relationships. More importantly, the show is about how to be yourself without your ego and emotions in control, and it's all of this wrapped up in 6 six episodes with incredible music and off the wall animation.
Also, it's basically where Trigger Animation started, like Ghibli with Nausicaa and Gainax with Daicon 3 and 4. It's extremely interesting to see seminal animation directors' works before they got the most success. Maybe it's less complete as a work per sé, but most times you see the root principle of all the work that will come afterwards. FLCL is brilliant storytelling, animation, Trigger and late Gainax's philosophy potentially kicks ass to anything, and it's influence can be seen in freakin Little Witch Academia and such, what a masterpiece and insanely influential director.
One of the main animators for FLCL is the creator of Studio Trigger which is a factory for pumping out high energy weird media. He also made Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking which are both very weird and fun in their own ways.
Go check out Dead Leaves 4real first movie directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi 45 minutes of pure crack. Go watch Space Patrol Luluco too if you didn't it's made by him too. OH and watch Abenobashi too if you liked FLCL's vibe cause it's mainly by the same people, and episode 3 and 12 are both directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi.
Its definitely not as weird as the shows you mentioned but Atlanta was so refreshing for me to watch. Just the weird subtle things that make you go back a few seconds to make sure you didn't misunderstand. My favorite episodes are the ones where the main characters don't even show up. And if you're into rap culture its a banger of a show.
I was so impressed by this Show. This is Donald glovers first Show? And He Puts out some of the best Television of all time and make it look like that wasnt even hard
FLCL and Chainsaw Man are the only animes that I have all the episodes saved on my PC. In the case of FLCL, I even have the first 6 episodes saved on my phone and when I want inspiration for drawing or animating, that's what I look into.
The second I saw Dale on the thumbnail I knew I had to watch this. Being into weird media often feels so much like a breath of fresh air and Twin Peaks was definitely the show that made me realize that I LOVE weird shit not because it’s weird but because so often life feels like what Twin Peaks is. It’s funny, sad, romantic, odd, mundane, horrifying, grotesque, confusing, beautiful, calm, and exciting. I recently got my roommates into it and after the pilot they’re hooked. Little do they know what’s in store for them 👹
Anime: Scissor Seven Gankutsuou Hunter x Hunter Tatami Galaxy+Night is Short, Walk on Girl Cat Soup Redline TV: Carnivale American Vandal Dark Les Revenants Moral Orel Manga: Alice in Borderland Pokemon Adventures (basically Pokemon+JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) Billy Bat Punpun Not Simple Games: Xenogears/Xenosaga (predecessors of Xenoblade) Antichamber Superliminal Paradise Killer Zero Escape, Infinity series, and AI: Somnium Files Danganronpa Baten Kaitos Eternal Darkness
I clicked for FLCL (Foolie Coolie). It's my favorite anime, I even have a Mamimi tattoo. That said, I enjoyed most of the media you mentioned, I hope others take your advice and. Heck out some "weird" media.
If you liked FLCL i'd like to recommend anime called Space dandy. The story follows an intergalactic bounty hunter named Dandy and his crew as they expirience all the bizzare thing that happen to them on their journey . It's mostly episodic so the themes started in one episode won't be referenced later or will but slightly. Since each episode stands on its own it also has a brand new team working on it (the story, animation, new characteres). It's basically an absurd space comedy on LSD. The main man behind this anime is the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. if you have time i'd highly recommend it and you'll hopefully look more into it
I also recommend Lupin III if you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy. Lupin and his gang are essentially the og group, so there are a lot of references that Cowboy Bebop pulled from Lupin III.
@@oziku1816 yeah, a lot of people have the same problem, it's mostly in the first part of the first season, in the second season is shown rarely and for me and others second season is far better then the first.
if u liked FLCL i would recommend the anime "Sonny Boy" it's basically "the leftovers" mixed with FLCL but it's focused on the people that dissapeared. in this case a whole highschool is trasported to another dimension and they got powers 'n shit. it sounds like the standar "tranported to another world" anime but it's a lot more grounded, focusing on the development of the cast and their personal growth. it has a lot of visual methaphor and it can get really wierd but it mostly make sense if u analyze it (or watch an hour long video essay xd)
That bladee take is crazy. I think you need to take a Relisten. Tryna say that red light or ever since is just about doing drugs and normal rap shit is plain wrong. Definitely less ethereal and esoteric as post lightning strike bladee, but the layers too it are arguably deeper. All bladee is good bladee though
Definitely look into Serial Experiments Lain if you’re into weird/experimental anime like FLCL. I’m honestly finding it hard to even describe the basic summary of what the show is about, it’s something you need to just experience, 10/10
everyone needs this because it’s so true. i don’t think i e ever enjoyed something as much as flcl when i watched it for the first time blind and after that i’ve always enjoyed the type of “weird” described in this video. it’s just interesting and entertaining and there’s no other reason to not try it
No mention of Twin Peaks: The Return? That season/series is probably the best argument in favor of "weird" or esoteric media and its power. Can't get enough of Dougie Jones, the Mitchum Brothers, Albert and Gordon Cole's chemistry, and especially Part 8. Would love to see a video going over all of it.
The Return (especially the parts in Las Vegas) is exactly like a Neil Breen movie, except it's intentionally that way (I have no idea how Breen still has no self-awareness, it's amazing)
i love finding weird music, i've gotten into so many genres i thought id never be into just cause i was and am willing to go down that route, only downside is that i had to sift through _a lot_ of sht lol edit: ya know what, i'll make a list of my favourite weird albums i like :) (tried to pick lesser known albums) - the Professor Layton series OST (not that unknown if you're older like me lol) = underrated game and underrated soundtrack, literally my favourite music of all time - Daughter of Darkness Natural Snow Suildings = 7 HOUR LONG drone/folk album, one of my all time faves - Murmuure s/t = atmo black metal with electronic touches, another one of my all time faves - الجن حراس قبر حمزة مطرب المقدس = atmo black metal again, totally different vibe though, so much reverb in this one - Violent Magic Orchestra Catastrophic Anonymous = more metal plus noise, this will make your ears bleed - IOSONOUNCANE IRA = post industrial/electronic/post rock, cant describe this one, it's a late night album for sure - Mid-Air Thief Crumbling = dream pop/folktronica, just magical stuff - Father2006 White Death = dark ambient/vaporvawe, haunting vibe - cLOUDDEAD s/t = super dreamy hip hop album, very forward thinking - Yellow Swans - Going Places = drone plus noise, oddly relaxing - Lalleshwari - Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness = singer songwriter, haunting and catchy - Paavoharju Yhä hämärää = psychedelic folk, beautiful and magical - Dead can Dance Within the Real of a Dying Sun = neoclassical darkwave, sounds elegant, it's also perfect music for halloween imo omg i have so many more lol but i'll stop at my 9 and above scores, if you want more suggestions leave a comment with a genre or leave me some recs back cause i'm always searching :)
Fck i also just remembered Masakatsu Takagi Kagayaki which is a recent favourite, its a super intimate folk/field recordings album that was so pretty it almost made me cry
If you're looking for great folk, Nick Drake and Vashti Bunyan are both incredible. All of Drake's albums were great, but his final album Pink Moon is hauntingly beautiful. Frequently, I listen to Bunyan's album Just Another Diamond Day when I'm getting ready for bed. Also, if you're into manga, read Panpanya's Invitation from a Crab. It's an incredible collection of surrealist stories with beautiful art that feels like nothing I've ever read.
Seeing you say “not that unknown if you’re older like me” about professor Layton is wild! I’m only 20, is that young for those games? I guess I’ve never questioned what generation it’s for
Yes I fuck'n loved The Leftovers, please make all the videos on it 😄 I was actually looking for videos about this show recently and was shocked to see a complete lack of any meaty discussions on RU-vid about this masterpiece.
I've been making playlists of weird or interesting videos for *years* but I've gotten so frustrated with RU-vid's terrible algorithms lately that it's kind of depressing. Nothing just gets recommended anymore, it takes a lot of effort to find good stuff, although I did just finish watching Interface by umami which was beyond amazing. Robert Morgan's stop motion work is incredible too.
@@TheNinjaOfTexas it's not as big as some of my other lists, but I've been watching a lot of stuff from the late 70s lately. I've been trying to add more, but RU-vid doesn't make it easy ru-vid.com/group/PL288pTtGpB6FNuDXJgnX0POp_uZU12pNO
Alice in wonderland is one of the biggest examples of "Literary nonsense" and by extension "Absurdism" in media, it's weird but entertaining for kids to read, Pretty much every kids book nowadays uses the absurd nature of Alice in wonderland. What i find interesting is how little this type of writing makes it into more adult media. The Lighthouse is a great example you used, i went into the movie only knowing one thing my friend said about the movie... "it has naked mermaids" i was sold. It's a super enjoyable movie all the way through, even if i didn't understand the movie on a first time watch i was still hooked on all the dialogue and the bizarre way everything was and made me feel. Some times it's boring to watch or read another serious story with easy to understand plot points and emotional moments, too much of the same thing gets old. It's far more interesting to me when i watch something strange, straight from the mind of an extremely creative person even if it doesn't make sense. "Tenshi no Tamago/Angel's Egg" is an Anime movie and is one of my favourite examples of this. Little to no dialogue and almost no story but somehow it captures you in an odd world with 2 likable characters. without the movie really doing or saying anything it has some really emotional scenes. "Dark Souls" and other Fromsoft video games also kinda do this. Almost no dialogue or forward storytelling and most NPCs you talk to just say vague things and then laugh at you. While there is somewhat of a "story" in the games it's not needed and it's more about being a stranger in a strange land for most Also going into movies blind can make a massive impact on at least my enjoyment of it, such as "Big trouble little china" a John carpenter movie. If i knew what the movie was going into it i might have enjoyed it less but i was fully expecting a serious movie.
Seems like we are just forcing two separate topics with little experience in both subject matter, to generate an image of intellectualism. In God’s name what is the connection of absurdism and Alice in wonderland, by this logic any artistic deviation motivated by lack of reason but maximization of creative experience is an attempt at a philosophical statement, and at absurdist no less. Not a serious topic, don’t care too much either, just a funny comment for a funny statement.
@@eve_______ Idk, I searched the definition of absurdism and Alice in Wonderland fits in it pretty well. I think it's very unnecessary to say this commenter wanted to look intelectual, when all they did was use a "complicated" word to express something that seems very genuine.
I'm glad you brought up twin peaks. It's such a hard show to get through because it's so slow at the beginning. Once you get to the end though, there's nothing like it. Amazing story.
This reminds me of finding Farscape and seeing the quirkiness of the show. It's a good sci fi show on par with Star Trek and Star Wars. BTW I like that your background music is from Bully which I recently finished playing.
Just to give literature some love, I would recommend reading Thomas Pynchon as a weird novelist. His work is extremely cerebral and bizarre. He exemplifies what novels can accomplish that movies or visual formats can't and pushes this imaginative potential to its limit. Gravity's rainbow in particular is his most creative and extraordinary work that I've read, but The Crying of Lot 49 is shorter and more accessible. Also I'd recommend Franz Kafka and H.P. Lovecraft as far as weird literature goes.
On the topic of weird media, I recommend listening to Public Image Limited, especially their first three albums (First Issue, Metal Box and The Flowers of Romance). They are all wonderful examples of avant garde and early post-punk experimental music before post-punk became synonimous with copying Joy Division's sound, the three are great listening experiences and Metal Box and Flowers of Romance are the most unique in terms of sound. I also recommend listening to late reggae artist Prince Far-I, the way he "sings" is like a spoken word over a reggae riddim. I recommend his albums Psalms For I, Under Heavy Manners and Voice of Thunder. Augustus Pablo is also a great and quite underrated reggae artist, his songs Java, King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown and Marabi are my favourites Lastly I recommend listening to Captain Beefheart if you want really weird stuff, I can't even describe it properly so just listen to Trout Mask Replica
I think Atlanta deserves to be in this conversation. Really amazing on a technical level and just... very strange in a very casual way. More people need to see it!
Though not all are my favorites, just some recommendations, Anime: • Serial Experiments Lain • Paranoia Agent • Mawaru Penguindrum • Sonny Boy • Angel's Egg Manga: • Nijigahara Hologram • Any Junji Ito story • Goodbye Eri • Aku No Hana • Bibliomania Film/TV: • Synecdoche, New York • Dark (TV Series) • Shiki-Jitsu or Ritual • The Witch • Donnie Darko (even though I didn't like this one that much, it was weird) Video Games: • Inside • Return of the Obra Dinn • Signalis • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice • P.T
The algorithm gods certainly know me well. I’ve been obsessed with flcl for about 20 years now and the light house is one of my favorite movies of the last 5 years, also a huge lynch fan although never seen twin peaks. We seem to share many of the same tastes, I may just have to go check out the leftovers now.
I just watched the original Evangelion and EoE with my younger sister within a few days over winter break. Easily one of the best pieces of media I've seen in years, I highly recommend it. Also ngl it was funny to see our mom get noticeably more and more concerned once the darker themes started popping up but what really took the cake was the "I'm so fucked up" scene. Mom really tore into me for exposing my sis (who is 15 btw) to such filth but she immediately spoke up and said with a straight face "mom it's ok I know what cum is". God damn I laughed until I couldn't breathe lmao.
I like strange/weird media. I add - Movies: "Angel's Egg" by Mamoru Oshii "2046" by Wong Kar Wai "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" by Shinya Tsukamoto "Love Me If You Dare" (French: Jeux d'enfants) by Yann Samuell Music: "Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" ("The Combat of Tancred and Clorinda") by Claudio Monteverdi "Battalia à 10" by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber Symphony No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven "Verklärte Nacht" (Transfigured Night), Op. 4 by Arnold Schoenberg Piano Sonata, Op. 1 by Alban Berg Violin Concerto "To the memory of an angel" by Alban Berg Symphony No. 17 ("Symphony for Metal Orchestra") by Alan Hovhaness "Carré" for four orchestras and four choirs by Karlheinz Stockhausen "Gruppen" for three orchestras by Karlheinz Stockhausen Vingt regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus ("Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus") by Olivier Messiaen "Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem " by Arvo Pärt "Stabat Mater" for soprano, countertenor and tenor by Arvo Pärt "November Steps" by Tōru Takemitsu
I used to watch this PB S kids show called wishbone. After watching several hours of the show my grandmother never understood the premise, even after I tried to explain it to her several times. I think it might count as weird.
Great video! Everyone on the internet should share the weird shit they like, there is tons of good underground art to be viewed by the public and it's way more enjoyable than mainstream stuff.
Cool video idea. Here's my contribution. Movies: Sorry to bother you 2018 Anomalisa 2015 Love, death & robots: jibaro The killing of a secured deer 2017 These movies are so interesting and out there am certain that at least one of them, will offer something new to you.
Alright, so after watching this video, I realized that it was indeed the same video that I watched probably almost a year ago at this point. Just wanted to let you know that this couldn’t have come at a better time (when I watched it the first time). I was diving into weirder media and was so glad to see things I already liked like twin peaks and FLCL being shouted out. But what was really special was learning about Bladee. After this video, I went and listened to Crest at least five times, and now a year later I’ve gone from basically only listening to classic rock to diving into everything from Bladee to Kendrick Lamar to 100 gecs to Lingua Ignota and beyond. I’ve just recently started learning music theory and sound engineering, and I have to thank this video for getting me started on this music journey. I’m deeply appreciative, it kind of changed my life now that I really think about it. So yeah, that’s cool. Please make another recommendation video like this if y’all feel so inclined, this stuff is awesome and more people like past-me need to hear about it. Anyways, lots of love here, thanks again!
If you're gonna check out weird media, Interface my Umami is absolutely incredible. It's an entire movie length surreal animated series free to watch on youtube, made by just one guy.
my weird stuff genre that I love is having premise movies. E.G "person needs to X within X of time or trapped" like Green Room, Don't Breathe, 30 Minutes or Less, Streched, or Premium Rush
FLCL is one of those things that gets better with age. There was so much I didn't get the first few times around, then fifteen plus years later it hit different. Also with the lighthouse I could never quite tell if Willem Dafoe was losing it or trolling hardcore through most of that movie.
y'all, check out Cardiacs, not even joking that they were one of the most underrated bands of all time. Equal parts hilarious and spiritual. absolutely transcendental stuff
great video. a few of the recs ive been meaning to check out for a while now. i love watching more unconventional media esp when it pays off and i find soemthing really refreshing and engaging.
Twin Peaks made be feel physically weird for a week. It put me in this weird headspace where I wasn't sad, but I definitely wasn't happy. Maybe I was expecting something that just wasn't there yet since I only watched about 5 episodes.
*Northern Journey* is a game that I've been enamored by for the last couple months. You're rowing your boat in the northern fjords, someone shoots a hole in it, and you get onto a dock just in time to watch it sink. Exploring the areas never gets any less weird, from finding 'a flask with the strength of 10 men long dead' to throwing enchanted axes that ignore gravity. But it's also very beautiful and has some truly breathtaking vistas. Highly recommend
For somewhat weird music: Iglooghost. He has built a musical universe, with lore, new language and all. It is truly fascinating; especially with the music videos!
I have a few suggestions for those of you interested in weird shit: Bad genius: a masterfully edited thai movie about kids that create a cheating scheme to get good grades on tests. Unironically one of the tensest movies I've watched. The Maxx: a cartoon based on a comic of the same name about a homeless man who wears a superhero suit and refuses to take off his mask and find out his true identity while constantly hallucinating about being a jungle king. The animation is very stylistic and the voice acting is phenomenal. While it is a bit tough to get into right away, it is weird and entriguing enough that you'll keep watching it. Boy and the world: a brazilian silent animated film about a boy that encounters older versions of himself. The animation is fascinating, mimicking the drawing style of a child, creating a very unique atmosphere. Everything feels slightly out of place and confusing, which is exactly how it feels to be a Child. The rabbi's cat: a really unconcentionally narrarated french animated movie about a cat in algeria who decides to become a jew so he can marry his hot owner. If you're into comedic metaphorical films about religion, you'll dig this. Juan of the dead: a cuban zombie film that criticizes both American Imperialism and the legacy of the decaying socialist world, serving as a very creative and witty commentary on cuban society. It's also gory as hell! Mister Miracle (by Tom King): Mister Miracle, the superhero who's Power is to escape any trap, tries to kill himself to escape his hellish life - but fails. A gut wrenching and melancholic character study, beautifully scripted by Tom King and drawn by Mitch Gerards. It does require some knowledge about the New Gods and DC Comics, so it might not be too welcoming for laymen... Arka'n: a Togolese thrash metal band that incorporates tribal african sounds and reagge influences with metal music. Nuff said.
Great video, my personal favorite piece of weird media that I’d recommend everyone at least try to listen to is The Residents. They’re an Avant-Garde band from the early 70s that made music that was technologically ahead of its time and very influential. Big recommend
bladeecity keeps comin up in every vid i c these days, and thats a good thing - tho my man here shouldnt count off the old albums, gotta have a ground floor to build an empire bby
There was a TV show I once watched, and there is absplutely nothing like it: Jam. Aired in 2000 on Channel 4 in the UK, for 6 episodes. It's a sketch comedy show. But the comedy is dark. Very dark. Such scenes as a "dead baby plumber" and "symptomless coma", or more absurd and surreal ones such as "lizards in the telly" and "Richard Madyley being apprehended for fucking a coffee machine". And it's filmed in a rather unusual way: it has a very ambient soundtrack and presentation from the start (with the intros being monologues that make zero sense) that makes the experience more uncomfortable if anything. Even for the creator, Chris Morris, it was quite a weird show, him known for satire. It's weird in every sense of the word, it stands out like a dead body in an identity lineup, but which is just amusing to look at. I highly recommend it, it's on RU-vid.
Amazing video, considering my fried attention span the fact that I sat through all of this is impressive. Keep doing what you're doing and I could see you being big if you focused on anime (just as a broad target audience) while making videos like these as more or less passion projects. Overall, really great
kudos for not narrowing it down to only one medium. focusing only on shows or books or theatre I think is a fairly common mistake, when a lot of lessons apply to all of them in the quest for weird media I think Homestuck is certainly a holy grail to be found
I went completely blind to The Lighthouse, that's why "don't watch with your parents in the room" is such a tragic sentence to me, because that's exactly what I did
I would strongly advise everyone to check out a band called death's dynamic shroud, its vaporwave at its absolute finest. It's weird af and its amazing, check out the first song from their album I'll Try Living Like This for an introduction. (The whole album is amazing tho)
Since I can see a lot of great anime suggestions, I want to add Land of the Lustrous. There is only one series dating back to 2017, whereas the manga is now up to 12 volumes and it’s not over yet. It talks about gems, one of which is having kind of an existential crisis. It feels really upbeat and the art is excellent, but it takes a really dark turn. Honestly fucked me up. Great video essay by the way with some top tier comments! So glad I’ve found this!
Can’t stop thinking how amazing the second season of 1899 would have been, hate that it was cancelled after the creators literally gave Netflix there best show of all time with Dark!
