There was a English guy who tried it on with the bank story at Suvarnabhumi airport, with bank statements and everything. He had a bandage around his foot said he needed money to get home because he was in a lot of pain. I told him to wait a bit, I went to the pharmacy and brought a box of paracetamol. When I returned his face was a picture. He thought I was going to get some money. He told me to f off : )

Good advice. 20yrs travel Asia. Rarely had a problem using a similar mindset. Sometimes u can be tired or not well. Try to keep your guard up. If they get angry, intimidating etc it proves they had bad intentions showing their true colours.

Spot on. With other travellers you meet it's simply. "Sorry, I haven't got it". If using debit or credit cards abroad, make sure they are your No.2 account. What I mean is, your main funds are stored in account No.1 and you only transfer money from No.1 account to a debit card (not credit card) linked to No.2 account.

On the flip side, not everyone is untrustworthy. Just for balance and even now just a few weeks after I am still grateful to the three Thai individuals on the Bangkok Blue Line who all jumped up to alert me that I had left my wallet on the seat I was sat in as the train pulled into Sukhumvit. A few seconds later and I would have left the train and see it set off with my wallet, cash and several cards with it. Always keep your wits about you, but don't become paranoid has always been my advice. In general, no matter what country you are in most people are generally honest and have the same standards you have.

I had my wallet stolen by a small group of Romanians in the Olala cafe opp the Blackwood Hotel in Soi 7 Pattaya, they were real professionals, good looking scantly clad girl, 2 chatty friendly guys , one guy was gushing complements about my polo shirt and hair style ( I am 68 ! ). The wallet was in a zipped shoulder bag which I had on , there was a lot of hand shaking and hi fives, the girl was charming , asking questions about London / UK , I chatted with them for a few minutes , was very polite and respectful towards them , after a few minutes I asked for bill ..... no wallet ...... lessons I learnt: only have a small amount of cash on you when out, don’t carry more than one payment/credit card, don’t put your room card in your wallet and be careful of good looking girls and guys who are far too friendly towards you for no reason.

The taxi queue at Manila airport was so long I hopped into one of these unofficial taxis with a driver and co-driver too and regretted it straight away. I adopted a no nonsense attitude and made it clear that I wanted to go straight to the hotel. No mucking around. I didn't quibble over the cost however.

Steady Eddie, on the 7:03 you are literally talking about my experience in Barcelona back in 2021, there was a brothel I was taken to by a friend of the friendly bartender in one of the bars. There was a champagne, three women with me, even some ❄️. That night cost me around $ 2,700 and there were around $11K of pending transactions on one of the cards that never went through and luckily got declined. Horrible experience.

An Aussie friend who was living in Pattaya told us not to walk away but run! Later we found out he had suckered an English couple in who were staying at our hotel and they had paid deposits. When I warned them they tried to get their deposit back which was supposed to be fully refundable.... They never got a pound back sadly.

Very good advice in my opinion Eddie. Not trusting and being suspicious of people in general is a necessary survival skill in today's world. Where I live in Latin America( shan't name the country,) it's second nature for me to be suspicious of not only the locals, but also my fellow Westerners. In other words, simply don't trust people. Most scams start the same way someone comes up to you. If you need help or information go to someone who is working at a job like a cashier and ask them for information, scammers rarely have regular jobs. People have asked me to lend them money and I tell them I don't lend money to anyone but I'll buy you a beer or maybe lunch. Also never tell a stranger where you are staying give them the name of another hotel that you know of. I've made a few mistakes when I've been tired but luckily nothing that has cost me too much money. Taxis are always difficult so now I mostly use ride sharing apps like Grab or Uber. Good stories Eddy.
@James-dx8qb
@James-dx8qb 3 месяца назад
It's a bit of a balancing act, trust, because if you never trust anyone for 100% of the time then you're destined to be alone forever and have nothing but the shallowest relationships with people that you know. And all because a small minority of people want to screw you over. I think being both guarded and open is the best stance, if you get my gist.

I invested my UK pensions in an offshore pension via the Isle of Man. The adviser was James Sutherland from Manchester and I ended up losing £72,000. I later discovered my losses were minor when compared with friends. The advice should have been "you don't have enough money to invest offshore" but this fact was ignored for commission. I even paid 30% Tax to the Isle of Man Govt for the pleasure of not making any money! Your countrymen are MORE DANGEROUS because you trust them more easily. Learn to say "No" in whichever country you travel to. I lived in China for 6 years and arriving at an airport, "bandit taxi drivers" approach you but don't speak English. They ask you if you want a taxi? in Chinese. The power of "No" (in Chinese said assertively) sends them packing while you find the "Official Taxi Rank" . . . . . . . Great video Eddy.

Very true with Charles Sobhraj, you should if you have not already read the book Serpentine by Thomas Thompson, or the life of crimes of Charles Sobhraj. Fascinating reading amazing how we got away with so much stuff but a lot of it was Bluff front and bribery and in the end murder. Going back over 35 years now a friend of mine who was an avid Asian traveller says he ran into Sobhraj, in the downstairs coffee shop of the Grace Hotel, in Nana, which was a large girly hang out. He got talking to Sobhraj and was going to go with him but a few of the Thai ladies really put a stink on and he thought it was odd and backed out.

i been to cuba 15yrs, and have a son there eddie. YOU are correct, the blue triangle is government regulated air BnB called "casa particulars". The owners are vetted by the government, and if tourists get things stolen, they can complaint to the cops and they will investigate the owner on your behalf, any lady of 'night', you bring to the room, the owner requires her i.d card to register, and after you have your fun, the owner will ask you if everything is okay, before the owner gives back the cuban visiter her i.d. card before she leaves. THE RED TRIANGLE in front of the house is FOR CUBANS, cause their standards are not for foreigners and it cost anymore from $1cuc to $5cuc/night. Normally the owners don't rent to foreigners cause they not suppose to, but if they do let you rent, the owners are still regulated by the government, so if things are stolen or missing, you can call the cops nearby, and investigate, the owners will get a fine, cause not legal to rent to foreigners, ONLY cubans.

When I lived in China I met a guy who had lived/worked in the north west of China. He had been a Town Planner in Glasgow. One night after a few beers he got in a taxi and headed home. The taxi stopped for 2 other men en route. Strange, he thought? He was driven out of the city robbed and beaten for his watch, phone and money. He was OK. In a country where they shoot murderers in the head and charge the family for the cost of the bullet, minor crime still happens.

In India especially, good looking western women are often employed by hotels/guesthouses to guise as a regular backpacker and are then told to 'randomly' bump in to other travellers in cafes etc. She then flirts with you intensively and precedes to tell you how great her current accommodation is: a real 'hidden gem!' that you should check out asap (remember, she's pretending to be a regular traveller, and single to boot). Once a victim agrees to take a look at this amazingly cheap hotel, recommended by the 25 year old flirty 'traveller', the girl gets her commission from the hotel owners and she then buggers off in to town never to be seen by the victim again! Men need to wise-up sometimes. this is so common in other parts of Asia too.

Agree 100% with this! You've definitely got to be careful. However, in my experience, this type of thing has improved significantly in South East Asia as the countries have started becoming wealthier. During my first border crossing of Cambodia and Thailand in 2007, you'd get followed by kids begging for money along the whole of the crossing zone. If you gave them any money, they'd all swarm you. In the airports in Thailand, I used to get harassed by people wanting to sell me a taxi fare for ridiculous rates, whereas these days you have to line up to even get a taxi.

Very helpful advices. Thank You! When visiting Istanbul, never accept help from a guy in the streets. They will bring you to shop or worse, a dancing. The latter will cost you a lot.

One time a woman offered me a teaspoon of some sweet fruit surup. She said try it, it will do you good. I gulped it down and it was foul!! I was nearly sick. It was cod liver oil, and the woman I trusted was my mother. 😅

Good advice to add in manila just use grab taxi. Of course to lend means to give in se Asia. Pay extra and use short time hotels then sleep alone not with girls. Not sure I always agree with recommended hotels, of course they are getting commission but the hotel can still be good. Always have small bills. Don't get drunk. Thanks for the video

Mmmm words of wisdom. I remember some YTuber saying in a video that he was fed up with other RU-vidrs bitching and back biting and well, he didn't want anything more to do with them. All he wanted was to be left alone and do his own thing. However, a month or two later that same person was hob knobbing on a video with another Thailand youtuber. Never listen to what people say just watch what they do, always the best barometer.

No way you can see this one coming. Some years back, heading out of BKK airport in a shared limo to Patts. Barely 1k out of airport (up ramp to freeway), limo stopped by 2 cops. No.1 lookout and puller over the other is the receiver. He informs the driver no smoking in car allowed and wants 500 baht. I was the smoker ie after a long flight. I refused to pay the cop who insisted with his hands open thru the window. Driver (female) ends up paying. I reimburse her at destination..... but cops in uniform targeting tourists just out of airport, never saw that one coming. Sure left a bad taste for rest of holiday. Expect even the unexpected.

You can have a safe time with a freelancer as long as you keep your wallet and watch in your pocket while you shower. If you just leave your money on the counter when you shower, it will get picked through and pilfered. I made that mistake once but could not prove it. I cussed at her a bit and sent her on my way. It was my fault, not hers. Also, I tend to leave the bathroom door open when I shower; so, I can hear or see if she leaves.
