I feel like people don't get this one. She talks at the end about being finally able to find her own voice away from the party. She wasn't being self absorbed, she just didn't know how to respond to all the compliments, that's what she was on her phone without doing anything. Sure wasn't updating her instagram, she was pretending to be busy so that people wouldn't approach her. when she got on stage she could finally be herself and even respond to stone of the questions people asked her before. This is about someone with social anxiety who's able to forget it for a minute due to her love for what she does

I feel like she might have wanted to respond to him when he approached her, but if she did that, she'd have to talk to everyone who approached her, including the people hitting on her or the obsessed fans who she might not have wanted to talk to as much. That's why she answered the question on stage instead, to maintain that layer of separation.

When I met my favourite band they were nothing like this. They were extremely polite and almost seemed excited to meet me. I was one of the only people at the meet, let alone the only person that wasn’t a middle aged man, and I genuinely believe that they cared. The lead singer literally said “holy shit there’s a teenage girl here our music is spreading to younger generations”, and he gave me a signed shirt for free. Best day of my life

She explains it in the end how she doesn’t feel like she fits in anywhere and realized when doing that song that she found her space where she’s not weird and can just be. When she was off stage she was again the person who felt she doesn’t fit in anywhere in the world, uncomfortable and awkward and not willing to be idolized in any way. She sings because it is her outlet, not for the fame.

None of the top comments are talking about the skeleton around 0:37. I wonder if she sees herself that way in the context of people, as not quite human, animated, but not with a soul. She puts all of her soul into her stage persona.
@Hereticked

Her phone says it all. 29 unread messages, low battery, the wrong time (there's no way she's performing at 6:47 AM) and the phone itself is battered and cracked. She's had a rough go of it and being alone with her pain is what helped her become a good musician. She's keeping herself isolated because she sees it as the source of her inspiration (and maybe it is.)

I think it's wrong to assume that she's choosing to isolate herself. She might be, but she might also just be socially awkward, or, and I think this is most likely, just too damn tired to interact with people. Most people don't isolate themselves by choice, and when they do, it's not always because they have some deep emotional pain; some people just like to be alone.

As a musician, watching this, I spent most of the video thinking- I hope I'm not like that- I try so hard not to be like that... then at the end, she got back on stage, and "switched back on" and I almost cried laughing. Because I AM like that. And those of you saying, "they're all like that", or "none of them are like that", just remember- it's a caricature. It's exaggerated for the vid. I love a lot of Cracked vids, but these aren't Cracked. I don't know what they are. They deserve their own place. Great work on Peoplewatching.

As a singer myself, I find the stage is where I can fully be comfortable because I love what I do. I'm more comfortable on stage than I am within the crowds. After gigs, there are always tons of people complimenting me and trying to speak to me and it gets extremely overwhelming. I literally have to say 'thank you' a thousand times without showing how awkward I am. Most artists I know are like this. I'm far from famous, but sometimes I wish I could disappear after going on stage because talking to people I don't really know gives me anxiety. Artists love to share their music, but they treasure their alone time.
@samb614ify
@samb614ify 7 лет назад
I dunno...I'm married to a musician and even when he doesn't feel like talking, he's still polite and responsive when people come up to compliment him or talk. I mean without people coming to your show, you don't have a show, you don't get booked, and you don't get paid, then you have to do a shit job you don't want to just to pay the bills. If you want to be a succesful musician, then talking to strangers comes with the territory. I understand feeling burnt out and emotionally spent, but if you feel that way, then don't hang out with the audience. Go find a quiet place to recharge instead.

I felt kind of the same way throughout most of the episode, but toward the end, I started feeling like it was more of a character study than a message story. Like, it's a story about a musician who loves song-writing and singing for her own enjoyment, but finds that she doesn't like doing it for others. EDIT: Yeah, I watched more of this series, and it's definitely a lot about individual struggles with depression and anxiety. It gets into how those things lead us into self-defeating behaviors. I'm enjoying it; I particularly recommend "The One Self Help Group We'd Actually Join." And make sure you watch it to the end.

this isn't about a self absorbed girl. At one point, you can see she's on her phone, doing absolutely nothing. She uses her phone as an escape from the people around her, which is what someone with social anxiety usually does. I have social anxiety, and a lot of the things she does is what I find myself doing sometimes. She's comfortable doing what she loves but the second she steps off she doesn't know how to handle it. Also, the one word answers and limited eye contact means she just likes to be kept to herself, and doesn't really like when people approach her.
@crashedwin
@crashedwin 7 лет назад
lizzy koenig yours is the best argument in her favor I've read, but I still disagree. she may not be self absorbed, but she still owes it to her fans to make an effort. she doesn't have to be the life of the party, but she was straight up ignoring people, and if they ignored her like she ignored them, she wouldn't have an album to sell.

As a professional musician who deals with claustrophobia and an intense dislike of crowds, I have to say that I understand where she's coming from. Unfortunately, my empathy can only go so far; any artist who chooses to perform live has a social obligation (not a moral one) to at least rehearse a few gracious responses to compliments for occasions like this. Any artist who finds that obligation too burdensome - no judgement at all here - should probably look into online interactions like RU-vid videos and Periscope broadcasts where they don't have to face things they can't handle. I have empathy for her situation, and I appreciate what the video is trying to say, but in my experience there's a better way to handle it in that moment.
@taureanbeaver3203
@taureanbeaver3203 7 лет назад
I feel you're right, lizzy, and I don't feel in the slightest that she owes or is obliged to give anybody anything more than the music. Good songs generally come from a place of silent introspection. People identify with their own inner thoughts when they hear them in song, but they rarely ever embrace the solitude required to articulate themselves in their own words. The process of creation itself is a sacrifice. I think that it's extremely selfish to believe that any songwriter a person feels they relate to is under any obligation to give them anything at all. A person's personality is their own preference. If you want to change an especially introverted person, you might as well un-write their songs and forget they ever made them.
@crashedwin
@crashedwin 7 лет назад
Taureanbeaver as a somgwriter myself, you're right about that end of the process, but you still have to make some time for the people who appreciate your music. it's just part of the gig.

If you're a musician with issues in social situations (whatever they might be), you should think twice about doing live shows. Some musicians can flip the switch and be relatively fine for the duration of time that they are at the venue. Unless you can do that, you're going to have a bad time, because the reality of it is that you do have interact with people, it's almost the whole point of doing live shows. Being a dick like in this video, wont get you far (the reason why you are like that, will not matter to enough people). If you're in a band you might be able to get by, since the other members can often do the talking for you most of the time. Even then you still have to deal with other musicians in your band and in other bands. Talking with other bands, making connections is often the difference between being able to play a few gigs and playing a lot of gigs. While playing on stage can be an amazing feeling, it's usually not that amazing if the venue is empty. When the fans think you're a dick, they wont come to the show. You're also not going to make any connections that would get you shows, so your only options are going to be the least popular venues and they usually require you to play for free. Of course open mic nights are a thing.

except live shows and selling merch at said shows are a means of making actual money whereas the returns for albums and royalties are pretty small for what is going out when you are under a label(even a small one). this may be where the bulk (or possibly all) of her money comes from and she may need to do it so that she has money that is hers to spend or save as she pleases or may be the only way she can live at all. she is clearly worn thin and super tired to the point where even her posters look sleep-deprived, clearly she's not doing this for fun it could be that this is about as far as she can stretch herself doing this thing she loves or maybe she's had to do this for so long because it's all she has left (or because she is contractually obligated to take live gigs)

As a musician, I was rather annoyed with this- I mean, she's just plain a bad networker, how did she get these fans if she's not willing to do the bare minimum of schmoozing? If you don't want to talk to people between sets go to the green room or something, but at least have the decency to look up when you say "thank you." Yes, I'm an introvert too, but there's a line between introvert and just rude- she crossed that line. I always try to be at least mildly friendly to people at shows- I feel like several people may have walked out and not heard her second set because she was rude to them. If you're going to fiddle with your phone, at least actually do something- she could have read the news or something.

Well if you watched till the close up on her phone then you would have noticed; the battered display, 29 unread messages, lack of recreational apps, the time - 6:45am - and the critically low battery power. The visual information provided is evidence that she is highly stressed and struggling to keep up with demand and hence is unable to talk to fans. The scenes are animated in a way that allows the viewers to relate to what is being addressed in the topic and hence why she is seen uninterested in conversation and possibly a diva but later to be revealed a highly stressed individual whose possibly hiding her emotion with a calm disposition. The mistake of thinking about her being an introvert and careless figure is understandable until the close up but to relate a cartoon figure with an unprivileged background to that of a realistic privileged artist is harsh and unfair to the realist.

This one was really interesting. It didn't resonate with me the way the others have, probably because I've never been into music in the way so many others seem to be. Reading some of the early comments, I think a lot of people are missing the key bits between 0:34 and 0:45 (where Flossy appears as a skeleton) and from 3:56 to 4:01 (where she's just moving between screens on her busted old phone without doing anything). I get the feeling that Flossy is a very broken woman. She's not self-interested, or she would have paid some attention to the woman from the label, and I think if she was self-absorbed she would be doing SOMETHING on her phone. I get the feeling that she really loved making music and performing, but she never got past that inability to perform in front of anyone but the sleeping dog--and no matter what she says on stage, every audience is still that sleeping dog. (And don't forget that the venue is Not My Dog.) But that's not quite right. She's also dead inside, disconnected from the world she dreamed of being a part of, but still moving through it. But this is wrong too, somehow. And I get the feeling that she'd love to connect with her fans, but she can't even see them. So I keep going in circles in my mind thinking about this, and I keep coming back to the first line of the description: "Nothing can go right when meeting people you have a preconceived idea about." Flossy isn't broken; it is the conceptions of her that each of her fans hold that are broken. That's not their fault; they're human, and we will always build up a model for people we observe from afar. But Flossy is human too. They are East, and she is West, and never the twain shall meet.

There are a lot of people trying to condense these videos into one message, but at the end of the day that's not how the world is, and these videos are trying to reflect the world. I think your comments here are very insightful. I also think the titles of these videos as they are on Cracked aren't helpful. I tend to try and ignore them when working out what the video is actually about. To me, this seems to be both an exposition of the projections that fans put on their heroes (which are unfair), and an exploration of the character who was never very social to begin with, and becoming a famous musician didn't fix her. So another message from this video might be "Don't rely on dreams to fix your life, because even if they come true, they won't automatically remove your flaws." Judging by the other comments, the number of dislikes on the video seem to stem from the most shallow understanding of its content combined with the 'clickbait' style title. Perhaps this series is out of place on a channel like Cracked. But hopefully the exposure is enough on its own, as they're finding an audience that does enjoy their content as well as one that doesn't.

As some one with social anxiety disorder, I feel like the representation here is flawed. If we were this terrified about interacting with our fans/people after a session, we'd probably hide out in the restroom and/or our car for the 15 mins of break time and thus avoid the situation altogether. We would not be this rude. In fact such rudeness would cause even more anxiety because it would lead to preconceptions and judgements, which are our biggest fears. It just wouldn't happen. We care too much about how others perceive us. What would have worked instead would be things like quiet, muffled and short replies, a continuous breaking of eye contact to glance down at her phone (so she gives the cue that she's generally concerned with/busy with something on her phone and not being rude, but is really just nervous with the situation). Also maybe placing her by either the back or front access of the place for an easy exit. Maybe even having a drink to calm her nerves.

Honestly I think people miss the point. This is a bar so there's nowhere for her to escape to. It isn't a meet and greet, where she's set up at a table shaking hands, signing things and taking pictures. You can't expect people to be 'on' all the time, it's exhausting. Plus most of the people there don't get the message the first time. She's clearly zoned out and she responds to their greeting, but then they keep pushing for an in depth conversation and she doesn't have the energy. I'm sure she has spaces for her fans to come say hi and talk. But she's saving up her energy in between performances.

why do you think most people become artists? Because they can speak and handle normal situations? Why now do you think so many artists also have drug and drink problems. Hell ever read up on the heavy metal bands and rock bands of the 80s? Drummer Tommy lee was a High school band nerd who was scared to talk to girls. Most metal bands are D&D table top fantasy nerds. Social rejects by popular kids the lot of them. As for girls who sing the same can be said for them for the most part. Most Indie musicians are super nerdy and socially awkward. Also bands owe you nothing when they are off stage. Its why they have green rooms because performing is hella difficult as you open yourself up to others. Frequently performers also need to zone out and mentally unplug from their thoughts when they have to channel that side of them as well. So to Une Nouille maybe it is not her who is the bitch, maybe it's you?

No one owes you anything. And i want you to count how many times she has to exit out of her chill down space to people. A Chilldown space where she has no ability to be "Polite" like you want her to be, even if this was a guy. NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING. So pick one, good music or false pleasantries to help your ego. Seriously Do you know how hard it is for an artist to chill down between sets? Notice how she even blocks the record label? She is in a zone where she is decompressing because she is performing. And not just that but every one of her questions they asked she pretty much responded to before she starts performing again. It might not fit your wants but you know what the performer owes you nothing, you owe the performer everything if their music does something to make you happy or sad or just enjoy. She is basically in a fugue state in many ways if you watch her, even when she says she couldn't perform in front of people, just a dog. Away from the party away from the people. Notice when she is speaking at the end how all the other noise cuts out and no one is cheering because in basic motion this is how she works. She i basically in her bedroom alone playing performer like its imaginary with no point but to do it because it makes her happy.

I legitimately am lost on what the point and commentary on this was. If her fans were being complete garbage to her, and you wanted to show that artists don't want to meet fans because they can often be invasive and obnoxious, sure ok. But they were all being pleasant, for the most part just treating her like a human being and expressing appreciation. And she...looks at her phone flipping screens back and forth, clearly just ignoring them? Even one who was offering to help get her music more out there? I really don't know what it's saying. That most artists are broken and rude compared to their stage persona? If someone can gleam some insight into what this was supposed to mean, please enlighten me, I genuinely want to know.

I noticed she was not doing anything on that phone, the story she gave when she got back on stage showed she can only be alive when she plays. I bet if all those people who interacted with her off stage shout out those same questions while she was on stage, they would of gotten response from her. The fans do know it but I think she heard them but since she was dead in her mind it might feel like gets her inspiration from God but maybe it's her fans.

If musicians, or actors, or celebrities "just" want to do their profession and not feel any obligation to interact with fans, then that's fine. However, it's a two-way street: fans, or the general public, aren't obligated to give that musician, actor, or celebrity "perks" like fast access to a table in a restaurant that requires reservations, having private access to a museum tour, quick access to a club, or (and I hate this one) jumping the line at an Apple store to get first dibs on the newest product. "Oh, she just felt super awkward." No. She made a decision to perform in public. Public performances and fandom are tethered - forever. However, as a fan I learned a long time ago to not give a celebrity any more respect and human kindness than you'd give a "non-celeb."
@ggrreegg84
@ggrreegg84 7 лет назад
Such is the life of a celebrity. They gain this sense of self and entitlement when literally millions of other people could do their jobs. While it's nice to have a distraction, we got along fine without worldwide celebrity for thousands of years. If you ever wonder why a celebrity will go on television and say stuff that really disappoints you, it's because you put far to much into somebody who without one or two inventions would literally mean jack shit to you. Or without that luck of the draw some other person stepped into the role they play. You would idolize a completely different person as opposed to a person of whom you never met and really doesn't care about anything but if you watched them and added another $5 to their account that just happens to emit noises you like. They forget that without an audience, they're just another face.

He enjoyed the fact that I appreciated his work but at the same time, wanted to be treated like a normal person and that's when I realized that celebs are people too. But at the same time, there are many who wish to use their privilege for their own self benefit but also desire not to deal with the fans that they demand money from to share in their work. Fans are generally self-absorbed shits who think that the artists owns them something. Fact is, if an artist doesn't want to interact with their fans they have the right to not interact with their fans. Artists are real people, not some merchandise you own and thus have the right to claim attention from whenever you feel like it, no matter how much you adore or love them. Any fan is only one of many, nothing special. If someone doesn't want to talk, whether it be an artist or a plumber or a scientist, just respect that. People don't own you anything in that regard and it hardly is like them not talking to you somehow negatively influences your life. My take is that small-talk with strangers is not what she's good at. Singing and song-writing is what she's good at, and so that's how she wants to connect with people. On stage (doing what she knows she's good at), she gets enough validation/ confidence/energy/focus to express herself in just words, for a moment. But she couldn't ever maintain that w/ all the individuals that come up to her. If she tried to talk to all of them individually, she feels she'd just be that person she was before she found her voice. Finding one way to connect didn't cure her of that (feeling of) inability in other situations. Idk, I have to think about it and re-watch it, but those are my thoughts now.
@PaulBell88

The only thing that makes her feel alive is playing onstage. When she isn't playing on stage, she is in an environment she would never choose for herself. She doesn't want to hang out with people. She doesn't want more friends. She just wants to play music. It is one of the only professions where if you are good at it, people think you belong to them forever. She belongs to no one. She just wants to play music. Everything else that goes along with it is killing her. That is why they don't call it show 'fun' they call it 'show business.'

I was really annoyed by her behavior, I must admit, and I'm a musician. I can understand that she is not a musician to boost her social butterfly personality, but instead to share her music with herself and with others, however, she acted like a real asshole with all those fans, as if they were all assholes for approaching her, with a mindset of prying into her personal life. How hard is it to politely say "I'm sorry, I really need to focus for the concert", and if said fan is pushy, then ignore him? She is just as human as they are, and some of them were actually trying to make friends in a casual manner. Making friends is bliss, be you an introvert or extrovert; introverts just have smaller tolerance to strangers.

As a musician (performing live for 3 years, 3 albums and a few singles on the way) I don't think it would be possible for this performer to have such a fan base and act this way towards her fans. I bet at least half of those people who talked to her wouldn't come out to see the next show because they were so disappointed in how they were treated and had their views changed of her. I learned the hard way in one of my earlier shows when someone said we sounded great but we had the worst show we've ever done and I said we were terrible. Haven't seen that guy since. It just tells them that you don't value their ear and even though you had the worst time ever they still got something out of it and you failed to realize it. I relate a lot to the performer because I only really feel like I can be me when I'm performing and hardly say a word otherwise. But when you're spoken to by somebody who likes what you're doing you HAVE to talk to them about whatever they want and thank them and give them a free shirt or sticker or CD or whatever because they're the only thing keeping your career afloat and the venue filled. You have to realize they're the best music fans in the world for actually going out to shows and supporting you.
@theclash435
@theclash435 6 лет назад
DNKOTOR agreed, this is not a realistic portrayal of a performing artist, seriously if you don't have at least SOME interaction than you have failed your audience, nowadays nobody goes to a concert only to hear music (Unless it is improvisational, academia or stuff that hasn't been recorded) you go to a show to get an experience you can't get from a disc. So I find this video frustrating too.

I kind of understand this one to a point if the artist has some form of social anxiety, but this is really pushing it, and not every artist has social anxiety. In fact just being a peformer can help with social anxiety, you have to be open to succeed in music. Completely ignoring and shutting down everything fans say is a little too far, and an indie artist would have to be literally insane to ignore someone from a record company. My sister is an indie artist with an album out, I at least know what I'm talking about a little. I can get why some people would act a little like this, but this is honestly ridiculous hyperbole

Yes, it does. People kept coming up to her all day, asking her all kinds of dumb questions and half of them didn't even know who she was. They were just talking to her because she had status. So when a true fan came up to her, she didn't even notice. It's so hard to really connect to people when you are expected to always put on this persona. well, my friend ... Unfortunately the world is not a utopia where we (artists) can play, sing, act and make art for ourselves and continue living. Unfortunately, sometimes we need to sell our art to survive. Yes, a lot of people make art for others and for fame, but most good artists just wanted to find a nice place and make their art independent of others... Yeah, people will inevitably like the art but... We don't have the responsability to be nice or make friends with them

Yeah, part of being a performing artist, whether it be an actor, musician or pro-wrestler is dealing with the fans (or interested employers) once you're done. That's also part of your job. if you suck at that, you suck at your job. No matter how good you are on whatever stage you're on.

Im really not that into music but i can get people who love to see their favourite artists. But if you are performing and are at a show then you are at work and the least you can do is acknowledge the people who pay you to do what you love and help make your dreams come true. I get it must be annoying for people to come up to you in the street and during your personal time but at a show you are at work. Some people literally travel hundreds of miles and spend a fortune to see you as a musician. It wouldnt kill them to say hi and be friendly.

An artist needs to stay focused, obviously for her talking to people and being friendly would have been an uncomfortable distraction. She got back up on stage and shared a personal story and got lost in the moment, she might not have been able to do that otherwise. And she absolutely did acknowledge them, she wasn't actually rude to anyone, and when she got back up on stage she had something nice to say about the audience. She's just more comfortable on stage, letting everything else fade away.

Ry Lima - I'm sure that's why they used these examples and not some idiots coming up like 'you're hot', because it's not about how creatively you can try to engage them in conversation, it's that they aren't comfortable with it and it's more important to stay focused so they can give a good performance.
@TooDamnTall

This one is irritating. Social awkwardness or anxiety does not give you the right to ignore common decency. If you are afraid of talking to people and want to be alone, go somewhere and be alone. Don't shit on your fans and then put on front as if you are so deep and caring when you're "on". The fans aren't the assholes for taking what they see as a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach out to and thank someone that has brought them joy or helped them through hard times with their music. I would support the fans are assholes thing if people were coming up to her when she's out with friends or family, or in the bathroom etc, but no... They are coming up to her respectfully AT THE VENUE and standing and or sitting in the middle of the room until she's on again. That's insanely disrespectful especially since you would be nothing without those very fans supporting you. I've met a few of my favorite musicians and they at least treated me like I was a human and responded to me even if it was "Hello, I'm glad you enjoy the music. I'm sorry I can't talk right now.". Just think about any other job... If you are on your break or lunch or just off but you're still at work in uniform, or walking out of the offfice and a customer comes to you to ask a question, you are not going to ignore the person and pretend they don't exist. No matter how bad your social anxiety may be you understand there is a certain expectation to at least treat the customer with basic respect even if it's just to say "I'm sorry I can't help you at the moment but if you speak to that person, or go there, they will be able to assist you with that." Unless the person is a complete shit head and or pissed, they are usually very understanding. Musicians are just normal humans with jobs that get paid to sell you an idea and emotions, don't let them get away with disrespect and bullshit. They need your money and support, and for you to feel something about their music, it's why locations book them to play, it's why they can get paid to sing full time instead of working at an office or something.

I'll agree that it is disrespectful to ignore the people around you. However, I feel that another way to interpret this particular people watching is that the things these people are saying are so similar to all the other things that have been said. It's repetitive, it's lonely, and I don't see her as a socially anxious person. She's a person who managed to get what she thought she wanted (she said she wanted to be a singer when she was a teen) and it's isolating and no one talks to her about anything other than what they know about her. It's not completely their fault. Just... not very fun for her.
@TooDamnTall
@TooDamnTall 7 лет назад
Rachel Bennett I can see what you mean and that's another good way to look at it. The problem is there were people that tried to engage with her outside of just you had a great show. They used music as a common ground but she still ignored any attempts for people to connect with her as a person. She isolated herself and kept everyone at a distance stopping anyone from really getting to know her on a personal level.

what i find silly about this is that she 'wants her cake and eat it to' kind of expression. the simple fact is that she went into an industry that requires you to network and need human interaction. if she is an intravert them she should stay at home and sell her records online. but to say she wants to make music and preform live but not talk to anyone is stupid. if you work in an industry then there are certain pros and cons, things that come with the job and so on. interacting with fans is one of them.

Love this series. I feel like every frame and second of the animation isn't wasted here, catching tiny communications with how every little gesture is a decision of every character to do something. The voice actors match very well with the animation style and while I would understand how some people might think that the conversations can be a little too waxing philosophical/pretentious I think how the characters talk and act are pretty alright in keeping with how people talk these days.

I grew up surrounded by strangers who adored me as a songwriter with an entire family in a band. This episode really resonates with me, especially as someone with severe social anxiety who uses his phone as a coping mechanism. My entire childhood, especially when a song I wrote made it onto an album, was crowded with people who knew my parents, and more intimidatingly, knew me. I was told my music (and eventually, my writing, as i'm an aspiring author as well) tapped into something in people they didn't know existed. The idea that my messing around with a few lines and a melody could impact people so strongly was... scary. I was influencing people, showing my creation to the world for anyone to see. Even now, as the band has broken up and the fans are few and far between, I'll play that song to curious friends and get so... terrified of how they'll respond- even if it's entirely positive. The music industry (and more obviously, the writing world) is a double edged sword in that so so many of us are introverts terrified of communication, so we do it indirectly through our work. It's something few people who aren't a part of this world can ever understand, and it only works to further disconnect the performer and the audience.

Pink Peacock Lookie here, the first person ive seen in the comment section who actually got the message. That major connection had to be made in order to get what the video was trying to get across in general: meeting your heros can be bad because you know what they're like on stage, not what they're like as a person, as themselves. And after so many people who could never truely understand them try to tell them how much their art (an expression of themselves) resonates with them or just how much they like it in general, I imagine it would get old to the point of it not being worth engaging. Maybe this example is kind-of a hyperbole, but it sends the message well imo.

alright heres my assessment of the video. from the short phone scene i think shes just fiddling with her phone to look busy so people wont approach her. she clearly isnt just a selfish bitch who doesnt care about fans because she ignores a record label aswell. this is a woman with very very deep social anxiety who is barely able to talk to other people. we learn from her monologue at the end that singing to the sleeping dog was how she found her voice. she can only really express herself infront of other people through music. this is why towards the end of her song intro, the crowd stops responding to her, and the sound of the microphone feedback stops. her whole surrounding fades away when shes on stage and she is able to answer the redhead's (jeremy?) question.

Social Anxiety or not, you don't just flat out ignore your fans when they're speaking directly to you. Especially possible job opportunities! If you don't want the social scene that comes along with being well-known, then don't pursue fame in music. It's simply manners and that bugged me.

That's kind of how disorders work though. Some can be mild and some worse than others. Speaking from experience it's hard enough to make a proper conversation with people you know much more with strangers. You will tend to overthink about how people see you as and it makes you not know how to respond or even have a panic attack. Then you mess everything up and think you are a shitty person and the anxiety could get worse.

Touring musician here. I have my own band. A lot of you simply don't understand how it's like for us after a show. After your first the praise is nice but after 3 or 4 (I've done dozens) it really does become the same thing over and over again. "We love your music, how long have you been playing? How do you play piano that fast? How long should my son practice to become as good as you?". Most fans come up to me as if I suddenly received this talent. I don't want to sound self absorbed but we know we are good. We spent thousands of hours practicing to become this good, for the dream. We spent hours trying to find gigs. We've grinded for this. And although we appreciate each and every one of our fans, there are a lot of you. We become easily tired reapeating the same thing. Most of the time I have to respond with "wow, thank you". Thank you some more. Each time. When you receive so much praise, from multiple people (sometimes at the same time!) your words tend to become rehearsed, unnatural, fake and uncomfortable. Fans need to understand what it is like from our view. That being said, I wouldn't just blank any fans like she did. She's just done a 2 hour set, maybe she got an important text from her boyfriend? Musicians have lives too! We are not a computer you can use at anytime, we only but human. Further more, the gig might have ended for you. But it hasn't ended for us! We have to collect our money. Sometimes pack up our gear and load it into our tour van, ready for hours of more gruelling travel. We just did a 2 hour set. We drove 4 hours to get there. We are tired and literally physically exhausted.

Like people expect you to have this kind of personality when you're a musician or actor or something public-facing like that, and a lot of us don't. A lot of us like performance because it's rehearsable, in a way that casual conversation isn't. And clearly she has to worry about both predatory guys and predatory music industry people. That would drive me up a wall if I were a musician.

What I felt is that she tells everything about herself and the songs she writes before she sings them, quite passionately, that too. If someone is really listening to her, they have her whole story anyway. Any other conversation does not really matter because she pours it all out on stage anyway. A desire for conversation might seem, to her, as wanting that mild feel-good that comes with even temporarily being associated with fame or someone famous. So, well...

I need to understand this. All the other vids had a clear message, but this one eludes me. At first I thought it was about asshole artists, but then she was a skeleton walking off stage. Then she doesn't just ignore people she, forces the conversation to end with blanket statements. Then she's shown playing with her phone in no meaningful way. Finally she tells a really personal and detailed story on stage, as the mic echo fades as if she's not on stage at all. Was all if it to state that someone you idolize could be dealing with more than you think? She couldn't sing in front of anyone except the dog. Is her only way to break her idea of herself (better of dead) and break her antisocial condition is to be on stage? That's why she tells a long personal story on stage as if there was no stage to begin with? Am I close? I feel a lot of people are confused on this one.

Ok I think I'll take a stab at this one. It's all about that scene at the beginning. She ends her show and turns into a haggard skeleton. She's drained of life and walks off. Then the rest of the episode she tried to shut out the world with the barest of minimal interaction with people. No matter what they had to say. Fans? Thanks so much. You want to offer a record deal? Yeah fur sure. You want to talk guitars? Thanks so much. My song and performances touch you on a deep spiritual level? Thanks so much. As she pretends to be engrossed by her phone. But the she gets on stage and suddenly she lives again and she can talk and ramble. And she tells a story about being shy but find out she has a talent for preforming. A calling for it. She lives her life from performance to performance. From stage to stage. The time in between is dead time recharging. Time she'd rather be alone. Because getting on stage take literally all she has and it's the only place she can be alive it's the only was she can communicate. That's why the guy talks about noticing a moment in her as she ends her set. He thinks it's the emotion of the song. It's really just the come down from the high of being on stage and the crash when you've spent your last ounce of social energy to do this. Being a performer in that level changes you. And the real you lives exclusively on stage.

I feel like anyone that says "this video means this." Isn't getting it. There's a lot of different layers to what's being said here, and everyone is going to interpret it differently and that's okay. Like, everyone that talked to her had different reactions to being ignored. Some thought she was being a wench, some felt like they were the problem, bothering her. Some seemed like they felt genuinely hurt. I feel like one of the things this video was trying to get across is people are going to be how they are regardless of how you are so don't take it personally. Like, Flossy's reactions had nothing at all to do with who it was talking to her, that's just how she is. Then there's other layers, other things being said, but that was my takeaway. I feel like all these videos have different levels and mean different things to different people and that's what makes them work. So no one is really wrong when they say the video was saying this to them because they're meant to be different things to different people. And that's part of what I love about them.

Meanwhile Misha Collins posted his number on twitter and spent the day answering calls and texts from fans, and Tyler Joseph from twenty one pilots will stop the show and personally go help fans if they're in distress. That specific example in the video, while she may feel shy and awkward, her reaction was really dick like. She straight up ignored them. There's any number of ways she could have handled it that wasn't so disrespectful. She could hire someone to be a buffer between her and the fans. Set up an area and time for a meet and greet. She could go somewhere private. Take questions for a few minutes on stage. Just shake their hands, make eye contact, smile, sign autographs, etc but avoid small talk. Be honest and explain on stage that she has social anxiety and ask to be given space. If she weren't famous, she likely wouldn't feel totally ignoring other people's existences was an option. She could make the effort. Honestly, stars are just people and should be held to the same standards as everyone else. I would probably stop buying her music if I were those people in the video.

There is only one artist and band I have actually wanted to talk to and compliment in person and that's Anthony Green and the entire band of Circa Survive. The reason I would want to speak to them, is because they helped me through very dark times. It means even more to me that Anthony also went through addiction around the time I was. And even before that time in my life I started to love their music when I was transitioning from a teenager to an adult, and I want to thank them for opening up my mind and heart to the world and learning more about myself... and their lyrics and melodies helped do that. When something has such a big impact on your life, no matter what it is (music, art, books, movies, etc.), you want to thank the person that created it. Circa Survive's music still till this day feels like a part of me... which is strange I guess, but they will always be my all time favorite band. And I don't put them on a pedestal at all, but I do want to thank them and let them know just how important their work was for me. I don't think that is wrong at all. I'm sure most artists would be glad to know the work they created helped another person. If I was met with the same reaction this girl had in the video it still wouldn't change what Circa's music has done for me. I'm sure I would be a little pissed at first, but we are all human and I don't know what kind of people they are in real life... maybe they are huge assholes who knows LOL but their music is separate from who they are as people. I know Circa's music inside and out, but I don't know them as people at all. I feel like a lot of fans think they know these artists personally because they are so connected to their music, but they don't.

I think the point of the video is that we get sick of watching it by 5:00 hearing the same thing over and over with nothing ever truly happening, it gives a little taste of what these artists experience 24/7, very clever

Is... Is she hearing impaired? She seemed to only be answering people she could potentially see moving their mouths at least in her peripheral vision, with very stock answers... I could be wrong, but I'm just wondering. And before someone starts on, "you idiot, she's a musician"; yeah, so was BEETHOVEN, so don't even.

Except when you saw what she was doing on the phone, she wasn't looking at messages or on the internet. She was just scrolling side to side, not clicking anything. Potentially to make her appear busy.

True, and it's entirely possible that she just doesn't want to deal with people. I just found it weird that she only gave very stock, practiced answers at offbeats in conversational rhythm, and didn't respond at all to people who were behind her.

I thought maybe this too. And just the voice actor's choice but the accent was all over the place with a weird American Southern/British/flat American coming in and out. Which would make sense if maybe she was hearing impaired.

Spoonie Beauty there's another vid where the actress who plays this musician responds to comments. I couldn't place her real accent then either. I think that's just how she talks. some who travel a lot in their youth do that. I hear my own accent shift sometimes. its not voluntary.

woow, This really resonates with me, I had very bad social anxiety my first year of college and would pretend to be on my phone whenever my friends dragged me to a social event. I would communicate effortlessly with my friends , but when someone approached me for conversation, I would freeze up and do my best to stop them from talking to me. I would avoid eye contact with other people and not even look in their direction to avoid any type of communication. Looking back I realized this made others think that I was stuck up, I've had my friends tell me that "so and so thinks you're rude, idk why". it was awful. That was 2 years ago, I'm still dealing with it and I'm not as anxious anymore.

She said "I could never sing in front of people. But in front of a dog, I could handle" As she tells the story the sounds of the bar and even the mic falls away and she sounds like she's alone just talking (and later singing) to herself. I think she avoids thinking of even having fans and an audience because she then really couldn't even perform anymore. Ofc this is a sketch and a metaphor. Like all people watching episodes there's more to it than just the face value. And I think even more interpretations are absolutely fair. I make comics, fairly popular strips about my life. I literally get art block when I think about people reading them. I have to draw them with the intention of not showing them to anyone if I want to make something meaningful. When I post them and receive the comments, I love it tbh. It's interesting to hear all the different interpretations and projections. I love seeing what others get out of it. I also reply to them and it's part of it. But I get flossy here. When someone approches me as a fan, who knows so much about me and idolizes me... It's not actually fun. And I don't want to know about it. When I write my next strip it's so much harder to tune out that people will read it and learn more about me while I know nothing about them.
