Hi. I have been rowing for years but in the last few months I am getting serious pains on the outside of my thumbs into my wrists. I only do 3k each session. I'm glad I found your video and am going to start your exercises. Thankyou so much.

I found your video while searching for neutral grip options for a concept2. Very timely 😄. Lifting weights is when I first developed thumb pain in my left hand. I started stretching my fingers (including thumbs) and wrists and started using Angles90 grips and other grip options that allowed a more anatomically comfortable ROM. I also started doing grip strength exercises (e.g., using a towel as a grip on pulling exercises) and using fat gripz on my barbells and dumbbells. Thumb pain solved. However, when I started rowing the thumb pain came back almost immediately. In fact, it is the limiting factor when I row. I use a very light fingertip grip as you suggested. I have been moving my thumbs around, changing grip position, as you suggested. Today, I attached my Angles90 grips to my rower handle, and miracle of miracles, no thumb pain. So I am going to do the exercises you recommended combined with the A90 grips and hopefully resolve the thumb pain eventually and be able to got back to C2 handle only. Is there any reason I should not use the A90 grips attached to the C2 handle?

Hey. Thanks so much for the comment and so glad you solved your thumb pain but sorry it came back. Grips like that are great because you can keep everything in the position you want. We use straps like this for a variety of reasons sometimes and this is one of them. Sometimes it causes more aggravation at the shoulder, but totally depends on the person, so as long as it's comfy and working for you, I don't see a negative. Great job and thanks for mentioning it so others can see this as an option too.

I have a water rower and wonder if I've done some long term damage.. I'm getting bad shoulder pain at night . More or less ok once I'm up and about. Also having pain in my inner arms . I'm 71 and purchased the machine to improve my breathing and lose some weight. Should I stop until my problems improve ir carry on but more carefully? . The pain at night is really bad. I think I've caused some tendon damage. Please give your expert advice . Many thanks for your help. Chris

Hey Chris. Sorry for the delayed response, I was on vacation. If the pain is okay when you are up and about, likely not permanent damage. Do you have the pain on days/nights you do not row as well?

@TheRowingDoc many thanks for your reply . Nighttime is very uncomfortable and difficult to sleep. Daytime mainly my right shoulder and inner forearms. A bit in my fingers too. But as a measurement I'd say Nighttime is 5 x worse.. I think I went a bit too keen o the water rower. Should I continue to exercise or lay off for a while This situation has been going on for a few weeks now with no improvement. Dr gave me pain killers (Codine phosphate) but I find that affects my breathing. . I suffer with copd and have a poor pair of lungs. The machine was intended to give me some low impact exercise. Any advice would be great . Many thanks

@@chrisf153 Hey. I know it's been a week, are you feeling any better? To be honest, it sounds like your nerve might be involved, and I would recommend seeing a PT in your area, and they should definitely be able to help. Do you notice a difference on days you row vs don't? If not, I'd say rowing is fine. But some of this might also be from the neck possible, so you could check out this video for rowing and neck stuff too. But if it's worse when sleeping, it's probably something else going on is my guess, but this is just random advice, not medical advice ;)
