Going all out is not very wise and Putin knows it. It is important to have 'something more' at all times to give you an upper hand on the negotiating table and the battlefield. Humans adapt, soldiers adapt. If you go all out and don't somehow achieve your complete goals, then it would either be a stalemate or it would go downhill from there unless you have something more to break through. Also, showing all your force in action is a good way of giving other forces a chance to study your military capabilities. Russia has more powerful countries to deal with and showing all its tricks to everyone over Ukraine is not something Russia would do. No matter you like him or not, but Putin is a wise man. Wiser than the west gives him credit for.

While that sound logical the Russians are still advancing past Kherson and there is still a large force there on the other side of the river with no logistical problems the Russians have plenty of ammunition and food that’s never been a problem and never will be as they can replace this equipment quickly. The Ukrainians on the other hand rely on donations which are drying up quickly as the Europeans have nothing further to give and the promised cash and weapons from the US are not arriving for months and this latest offer some won’t arrive for 6 months far to late I suspect. We will likely be debating this same issue when Odessa is already under siege.

Russian logistics in Kherson depends on only 3 bridges which have been 75% incapacitated already. This is what makes them very vulnerable. However, the terrain across which Ukraine has to attack is flat and open. This is the sense in which geography does not favor an offensive. If the West would give Ukraine every missile resource they can, and ATACMS in particular, then they could completely cut off Russian logistical links and burn up the supplies for the Russian troops west of the Dnieper. After an extended campaign to do this, and getting significantly more armored transport into Ukrainian hands, the flat, open terrain might not matter much, because Russian ability to shell advancing forces should be drastically depleted. By that time the cut off Russian troops in the Kherson region would be exhausted, shell shocked, and demoralized. They might well collapse quite suddenly when an adequate offensive begins. One of the major factors that is going to determine the possibility of this scenario is whether or not the US leadership gets the grit to aggressively supply the Ukrainians with what they need to do the job. Ukraine is diligently working on comprehensively destroying those bridges. I believe they will succeed, and demoralizing attrition is going to afflict the west-of-Dnieper Russian troops. If the Ukrainians cannot acquire the assets to follow this up with a large scale offensive, then they will nevertheless keep the Russians cut off and persist in a lower grade campaign of challenging, testing, and stressing the Russian front on into the approaching winter. Russian collapse in Kherson will remain a possibility anywhere along the timeline, but it will cost the Ukrainians a lot more suffering and blood to get to that point.

I agree with Zelensky’s assessment. With the current political turmoil in the USA and in England as well as the tepid support from France and Germany, I would be concerned that they could pull the rug from under him if Russia were to threaten nuclear war or some other less threatening action. The only way that I see for Ukraine to quickly end the war is for substantial airpower, such as stealth fighters or stealth drones be provided either directly to the UKRAINIAN AIR FORCE or through NATO. Either way, it represents an ALLIED engagement, which we seem reluctant to do right now.

Small hickup: Russia is about to annex Kherson, Sapporizhzhia and the LPR in September. After that, these territories are part of Mother Russia and the defense can be left to conscripts, freeing up the professional soldiers for new offensives. That was the very reason why Kiev had to attack Kherson NOW, but it failed and will pay the price.

Tactics like blowing up bridges in the face of your own counter offensive is nothing but a display of weakness. And even if it did make some ground then you would just expose it to counter offensive and encirclement. Something the ukrainians would be doing if they knew the first thing about war but they obviously dont (hense why they are using trench warfare and dying to protect an invisible line on the ground)...
