Steve Perry said the hardest song he ever sang live was "Mother Father" Listen to the 1981 Live Houston Concert version. Steve knocks it out of the Park. His vocals and the instrumentation in the song is amazing. If you do any other Journey, look for live versions from Houston Concert

I'm used to your reactions not being interrupted, always waiting till the end with excellent commentary. I loved your 1st reaction of When you Love a woman when you did it with the video in large screen. I couldn't really see the words on this one. And watching Neal play his guitar solo, the orchestra, and Steve with all his emotion soaring is what I love about this video.
We lived in Hanford for 25 years and twice met Steve Perry. Once at the Sizzler and second at a Chinese restaurant. I still have his autograph! Great, kind man.

John, the song is about the deep love a man has for his wife, and Steve has loved women in his life but he has never married. Maybe it was about a woman in his life, but Steve has said he never married because he saw all the band members of Journey go through divorce, some repeatedly. He saw what they went through emotionally and financially and didn't want to go through that experience. This song is so beautiful and he sings it with such emotion, wish the whole world would get to experience that kind of love.
@@estills4768 Your right, I've heard the same thing in interviews from both Steve and Jonathan, although Jonathan had the melody and the theme behind the lyrics, Steve did collaborate on the song with him to complete the song. What chemistry those two had a long with Neal because most all of Journey's play list from ' 77 to the completion of Trial by Fire were mostly all written by Steve, Jonathan,and Neal. What a gift to the word!

Not a deep cut. This was there biggest single off the 1996 Trial By Fire album. Went #1 on the adult contemporary charts and #12 on Billboard hot 100. Probably could have done better but they did not tour to support this album due to Steve Perry's hip injury and subsequent breakup with the band.
P.S. they ended up releasing 4 singles from this album, the first one was "Message Of Love", Then "When You Love A Woman:, "Can't Tame The Lion", and "If He Should Break Your Heart". You should check them out.

You should watch the official video for this song. It shows them playing the song with an orchestra and Steve Perry signing it. Very cool. Much better experience (in my opinion) than the video with just the lyrics.
Any Winehouse in a vid, was walking down a street with a guy, a best friend and they were shootin' the crap and during the conversation he said, hey that's like the time my Mom and I were living with her boyfriend (name} and he said ya know, I really love your Mother and I want to marry her, I'm gonna write a song for her. Don't tell her, I want it to be a surprise and we talked for a long time and he spent the afternoon writing it. It was this song. He was the lead guitarist in Journey. Forgot the story till now.
The history behind the Album this song debut form is amazing. "Trial By Fire" 1997 was the first album written after Journey reunited from a 10 year separation in 1987. There was supposed to be a tour but Steve Perry's health made this tour fall apart and Steve has been separate from the band ever since. The fact this song was nominated for an Emmy is a testament to what these guys can accomplish as a group even after being apart for 10 years. glad you found this song.
Hey now!, we all know SP is the voice. But Neal hit it out of the park with his solo also. He always does. No two pieces ever sounds the same other than kicks ass. Am I wrong?
You are not showing the video, so disappointing, because his face showed every emotion, love, loss. Steve, Neal and Jonathan were an unbearable as a team
He was in agonizing pain during the shooting of that video, the dancing sequences were spliced in out takes from his Strange Medicine videos. He couldn't use any painkillers for his hip and still perform, so they just packed him in ice between takes.
After much debate (within myself) I personally think Steve Perry is the GREATEST singer EVER... Freddie Mercury is second best.... I do love Freddie... but Perry.... No match...
