In this week's video I react to a video of an 85 year old child free widow with no kids. One of the most common critiques that child free couples get is that they will regret their choice and be lonely when they are older. While I think people mean well when they give this advice, I think it's time to start taking advice from an actual child free person and get their perspective on what child free life looks like as you age. So, will I regret my child free choice after watching this video? I guess you'll have to watch it to find out!

Retirement homes are filled with parents who gave their lives for their children, just to be abandoned and treated like an obligation by those same children as adults. So my answer to "who will look after you in your old age?" is "most probably the same people who are going to look after you".

I live nearby a huge retirement complex and can 100% confirm. It's like once month for a few hours the parking lots get filled with a few cars from the visitors and that's it! Otherwise the people are alone (as in, not with their kids but with neighbors and staff) ALL the time

I think it’s also a cultural thing. I too, live in a huge retirement community, and back when our clubhouses were open, there was this Mexican American comedian, and he talked about his background, then asked, “Anyone else here Mexican? Stand up, please. “ One old man I knew did. The comedian then said, “See, we keep our elders with us.” He did a funny show. I really wish our clubhouses would open back up.

Pre-Coronavirus, I meet a woman in my Grandmother's retirement home who is 100 years old. She knows I am child-free. She told me she out lived her two sons. There is no guarantee your children will be with you in your senior years. 🤔

I stumbled upon this blog on a different online source several years ago when I was starting to consider getting a tubal ligation. I was afraid that maybe I would have regrets when I got old but this lady reassured me about my choice to stay childfree and eliminate the chances of getting pregnant.

I had a baby when I was 35. A sweet baby boy who passed away after 2 days. I waited till I was 40 to decide to have another baby. 40 came and I immediately had my tubes tied. I have about 10 reasons why I didn't have another baby and the pandemic validated my concerns. I am very happy with my life the way it is now!

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I had gotten pregnant by a guy who was abusive to me and I end up having an ectopic pregnancy and even though my health was at risk, God spared me and I was so happy I didn't have that baby cause I would have had to deal with that abusive sicken man the rest of my life & look at a child and deal with a child that reminded me of him. And I would have made the 4th baby mama he had and my child probably would have suffered absent father and I didnt get along with the other mothers, so I had to look at that as a blessing. Now, I am married and been with the same man for almost 10 years. My husband didnt want children, but his mind changed after we got married cause I wanted one. He has NEVER pressured me though to have children and that is SUCH A RELIEF. We both said, if it's Gods will for us to have children, then we will, if not then God know our best interest better than we do and know what we can handle. We not going to do the IVF and all that. If we decide we want a child, we will adopt.

This woman speaks the truth. I never wanted children and was insulted, degraded. etc. My boss, a woman who had three children, actually called me selfish. Fast forward. My husband decided he HAD to have a child (actually his parents made him think he was worthless without them). So, I told him stupidly that I would have one baby if we could move back to Hawaii. Well, of course, I never got back to Hawaii and worst yet, my child has severe autism and my husband has left. My old boss? Never came to help out once. Stick to your guns if you do not want children.

I lived with my parents until i got married at 25. My parents lost themselves. Blowing up my phone and what not. It gave me one more reason why i dont want to be a parent. To me i saw it as emotional jail. I dont want to go through that. Its like all they had to occupy themselves was me. It was too much for me.

"Kids can't take the place of a spouse." How right on you are. My father passed away in early 2020, after a very short but intense battle with bone cancer. He and my mother were married 42 years and my mother is still very much grieving his absence. Much as she loves me and my sister, and vice-versa, we are definitely no substitute. Neither are all the other family members she has around her. Not to minimise their love and support, but that's the reality. If this had happened when us kids were young, I don't discount the possibility our mother would have been too distraught to take care of us. It happens.

I'm definitely in group B. I know my life would've been so much better without kids, and would've been able to accomplish what I wanted to in life, instead of being pushed to have kids which didn't feel like a choice as it should've been. Now I'm depressed and miserable, and still haven't been able to do anything I wanted to in life, and I'm passed my mid fifty's at this point.

Well at the beginning of my 20's, I thought I would be getting a career and be able to travel to places I've always wanted to see for example, but instead, my husband that was totally on board about not having kids right away, say, not for up to ten years later, suddenly changed his mind about waiting that long, and the next thing, I was pregnant only a few months after we were married, putting us in the poor house and ending any hope of a career or being able to afford to travel, not that we can anyway now with the pandemic. Also, I had a God given talent for dance that went to waste after having kids. I'm now stuck being a caregiver to my accident that didn't turn out normal, so it took up all my time.

Parents choose to have children for many reasons that their children may not choose. Some so they will have someone to look after them in their old age if necessary. Others spend their adult years living away from their adult children and grandchildren but move 5 blocks away as soon as they get old.

I’ve met people online who feel personally attacked by other people’s choice to not have children. I really don’t get it, other than to speculate that they never actually wanted kids; they did it because it was expected of them, and they resent that other people actually feel comfortable weighing their options and choosing what works best for them personally. Even as someone choosing to have a child, I do not feel weird or threatened by people who don’t want kids. And I want to maintain some of the autonomy and personality I had before having kids, because I think a person is interesting for, and defined by, more than just one aspect of life.
@WifeWithoutKids
@WifeWithoutKids 3 года назад
I'm never quite sure why my choice to not have a child makes some people uncomfortable or upset. Part of it might be the reasons you mentioned. I think that's why it's so important to talk about children being a choice.

Aw, I'm sorry. I totally understand b/c a lot of people have done the same thing to me. One thing I've learned is that I just let people know why and that's it. I don't have to justify my decision or try to get them to agree or understand my choice because a lot of people just don't get it. That's OK. I'm making this choice because that's what makes me fulfilled and happy. 😀💜

I think because of this lady's age she would have faced less judgement because there was no reproductive technology, so if she said she couldn't have children nobody would grill her for not hiring a surrogate or opting for an egg/sperm donor. Also having children isn't a guarantee you won't grow old alone. I used to work as a home care worker for seniors and some of them had several children and none of the children visited often. It wasn't necessarily because they didn't have a good relationship with their kids, but because their children still have to work and have a lot of demands on their time. Also a lot of people have to move for marriage, careers etc. so their children aren't necessarily able to stay in the community they grew up in.

I absolutely love this woman. She is so grateful for her full life and still continues to live and love despite losing the love of her life. She is so open minded for someone her age which is refreshing. It is so bold, brave and inspiring that she has finally come out as being childfree in such a public way. Although she had her husband it must have been hard to keep that secret for so many years and even a little lonely. Also, I wonder how many times she was forced to have/fake a conversation with someone who also tried to get pregnant, for real, and could not. That would be awkward but I guess someone could just say, “I prefer to not talk about it because it’s too painful.” 💁🏻‍♀️She is such a strong woman!

This was very insightful. I have been the one to ask a friend the „children - yes or no“ question a few years ago because I felt sure she was hinting at something - very insensitive on my part and I have never done it again. I'm very fortunate that both my parents are still living. My mom just had a quadruple bypass in September, and fortunately is doing very well. She is 81, my dad is 82. I've always been pretty close with them, but our relationship has gotten stronger as we've all gotten older. I'm so very grateful to be able to call my mom whenever I have a question like where to find heavy cream in the grocery (yes, I did that..LOL) or just to chat. They know I'm here if they need me for anything...like when my dad wanted to go golfing a few weeks after my mom's surgery, so I went over there to hang out with her just in case she needed help with anything...she was dusting! But it was fun to sit and chat and watch tv with her. The way I look at it is that they've done their job..I'm an adult and they don't owe me anything. Now it's my turn to be there for them, and I'm thrilled to be able to do it. :)

I don’t like kids, especially when I was a kid. They can be cruel if they decide that you don’t fit in. Now, I’m too old to worry about pregnancy and I really don’t want to adopt either. My husband has grown kids from his first marriage and a grandchild. But the hard part for me is trying to find others that are child free. @@suzannearendse2158 Lots of children are mean, I used to teach them. That's why they need to be specifically taught how to share, how to treat others kindly etc. There are also a lot of naturally kind, good natured children but they are not the majority in my experience. A lot of parents don't raise children well and they encourage arrogant, spoilt behaviour which is also part of the problem.

Also when you have a child you always bring harm. Your child will suffer and know more pain than pleasure in their life. And also does Earth need more humans? Everyday 20,000 people die from hunger, that is every day. Good thing we can pop kids out faster than they can starve to death.

Appreciate the fact that you posted this video but the cutting in an out was distracting. You had a lot of good points but I think having them at the end of reading the letter would have had better flow. But, thanks to your video, I just went ahead and found the letter so I could read it myself and I'll probably pop back on here at some point to watch the rest of your video and comments about the letter.

When people get too intrusive re not having children I will turn it around and ask them why they had them and get them to expand. It is interesting to see how uncomfortable they are when the same is asked of them.

All of your videos are amazing, but this one really gave me the perspective I needed. Wow. I am in a situation now where my partner definitely wants kids and I have little interest in being a parent for numerous reasons. For months I have tried to change my mind, partially out of desire to be with my partner long term, and partially out of fear of “aging alone”. Your videos have given me so much validation in listening to my intuition/feelings and reframing my vision of what a childfree life looks like. Thank you for putting this perspective into the world - it has helped me so much. 🥲 Please keep making videos. 😊

I am 43, single and I have one daughter and she is grown and out of the house and I LOVE the empty nest, however as much as love her it was a very emotional roller coaster and I do sometimes feel I would have been happier not having her. We fight all the time, and the anxiety of making that you are making the wrong decision or you have made the wrong decision is very real. As an empty nester I started taking ballroom dancing lessons, and I am starting up guitar lessons too. I love being able to invest more time into me. Do I get lonely? Sometimes but I think HRT will help with that. So for childfree by choice group I say you are making the right decision.

There are massive pros and cons to having or not having kids. It is a biological urge for most people to have children and carry on their line. Not doing that can lead to a sense of loss that can not be filled by anything else. That is most people ,but a reasonably large percentage can be content to not have children and do not have a strong instinctive urge to have kids or have a maternal or paternal nature. As a man I would say that I think most men don`t care whatsoever if women choose to have or not have kids. It is more usually women that judge childless people.

You’d be surprised, mate. Before I turned 26, men and women alike pressured me. They asked if I had kids, then noisily asked why not, these were my coworkers and customers, so I couldn’t expect to keep making money if I told them to piss off and stop being so nosy and judgmental. I’d say, I’m only 18, and they’d say, so? Same with I wasn’t married then, I couldn’t afford it, couldn’t handle the responsibilities etc. Once I turned 26, everyone magically didn’t care anymore, and figured that if I didn’t have kids then, I probably wouldn’t. The worst excuse some married man gave me was, “ it’ll change you “. Well that was a poor sell, because those years were the prime of my life, and I didn’t want to change anything about myself!

Let's imagine this: You partner and you have 2 or 3 kids in your early 20s. By your early 40s, you're still relatively young and still working. Your kids are gone, but not really. They still ask for money for college, a car, maybe even a home. I can't imagine such a life.

I really do love children, and would be very excited to be a parent to another amazing human being (with the right partner), but honestly with how screwed up the world is, the likelihood of my child having severe medical issues, and knowing they would be brought into a world that rejects them bc it wasn't designed for them, and a quality of life that continues to demish as climate change, inflation, ect run rampant, all of those reasons and more make me convinced that it is far too cruel to bring a child into this world at this time, and that the most loving thing I can do for my child is to give them the gift of never being born.

I think for the video it would've probably be better to let the narration go first and then leave the commentary at the end. The constant interruption to comment ruined the flow of the lady's narration.

My heart goes out to the folks with kids here who feel like they have to be friends with other couples just because their kids are friends and I want to encourage them not to force themselves to do that, don't let yourselves be pressured to have relationships with people you don't enjoy because of your kids. We already have to deal with that in our extended families, don't do that with your friendships too. My parents didn't do that. They developed friendships with people they enjoyed spending time with regardless of whether or not my sister and I were close with their children and it was great. We weren't forced to spend time with kids we didn't get along with and Mom and Dad didn't have to fake it for the sake of our friendships. They were cordial to our friend's parents for sure but didn't allow themselves to be pressured into friendships they didn't actually want. My sister and I also made the effort to be kind and cordial to their friends's kids even if we weren't friends with them, and as we got older this became less of an issue. This also set a great example for my sister and I about how to seek out healthy friendships that are fulfilling and meaningful and spared us a lot of suffering by teaching us to only invest in relationships that were worthwhile, regardless of what anybody else thought. I learned so much from this that only adds to the joy of my childfree life.

I'm not sure if family sizes are getting larger or smaller in North America overall. That would be interesting to look into. With everything that's gone on in 2020 I thought people would be less likely to have children, but that doesn't seem to be the case!

@@WifeWithoutKids in the US and UK there are many more one-child families (and child-free families) than in the past. In The Netherlands where I live not so much. But numbers are rising in Europe as well and that’s a good thing considering the huge climate change challenge that is awaiting us. In my opinion overpopulation is the biggest problem. People should not have children light-heartedly. Also not stop having children altogether obviously, but the choice to remain child-free is certainly not selfish in this respect. Instead, you may rather question whether it is wise to start a large family... I wonder what the effect of COVID will be. I have no idea.
