He's too present. One of the keys to becoming a mythical figure is literal absence and mystery. He talks too much and people see him too much. The more absent you are, the less you talk, the less people see you, when they do see you. There's going to be a literal Aura around you. Even your average joe in life can disguise themselves as an analyst or within the media just with simply tweeting. Jordan never had that level of burden. Remember when Chuck said on national tv that he would slap anyone from media on the spot who says Lebron is greater than MJ? That was after the 2018 nba finals when lebron clearly quit on his team and chuck was so pissed about it. No and it has very little to do with his actual basketball career. Social media today just makes us much closer to these players, we feel like we know them in and out. Everything we knew about MJ back then was either what the traditional media reported in the papers and on radio, or through documentaries. MJ couldn’t randomly post his breakfast or favorite album on his story, hence why older players got this “mythical” aura to them

There's some aspect of perfection or near perfection that goes with someone reaching mythical status. For example, Jordan is undefeated in every championship game or series he ever played in. Jordan is 11-0 in Fiba, Olympics, NCAA and NBA championship game(s)/series. Jordan was only outscored in a playoff series one time by one point. Bill Russell is undefeated in game 7's and won 13 titles in 16 basketball seasons. Stuff like that is what those guys have on their resumes. LeBron doesn't have something like that on his resume. Dominating a weak eastern conference for 8 seasons doesn't quite cut it.

What's mythical about Jordan, Kobe, Ali are the stories we hear or watch from other people. Either from their peers, opponents, all those insane and awe inspiring stories we read or watch about them solidify why people put them to these pedestals. Sure we hear stories about players saying LeBron works hard, takes care of his body, but most if not all great athletes do that. It goes without saying, that's what make them great in the first place. Countdown from 50 while scoring, Dream and Redeem team stories, Ali backing up his trashtalks we hear about. Those things are what separates the mythical from the legends.

Dude has made both the NBA and sports media every where billions of dollars. The man is a literal walking ATM. Of course he’ll be mythical.

Not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6... not 15, not 20, seasons without a ring. The longer he's in, the worse his legacy gets.

I think Steph Curry will become more mythical than LeBron James, because the way Steph Curry makes baskets seems almost magical. Routinely hitting shots from 38 feet away seems slightly supernatural. Whereas LeBron scores a lot of points by being bigger and stronger than everyone else, which is expected from someone bigger and stronger than everyone else!

They're sleeping on Gretzky as one of those mythical figures.

I don’t know if he will be forgotten because he played for so long but he is only so popular right now because he’s current. Give it twenty-thirty years after he retires, people who never saw him play won’t think he’s that impressive, he will be on the same tier as Larry Bird or Tim Duncan. There are tons of players that have good stats, but winning matters. He got four rings so he will never fall out of the top 5-10 but his GOAT case is being hyped up by the media and fans.
