Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice on a StarTalk Episode (Growing Up On Mars) discuss, if Martian gravity is only 40% of Earth’s gravity, can you adapt to lower gravity? Is it even possible? What do we mean by the word adapt in this context? According to Neil, we can look to the experiences of astronauts for some clues, but if a colony on Mars is to be fully realized, this is a question worth exploring. In this video Neil further explains how a species can become suited to life on Mars over time.

When you move from a cold to hot environment, over a month you will lower the thickness of your blood to cope with the heat, or vice versa. That is adapting surely?

We evolved to do that

@@InstrumentalsBeats possible but evolution has a benefit driver, where this could be an adaptation of an evolution to another purpose.

@InstrumentalsBeats Yes, we evolved to, among other things, be able to adapt better... That doesn't mean that life doesn't adapt. Tho relying too much on lifes ability to adapt to any arbitrary environment is also clearly dangerous, so I can kind of understand the motivation here.

When you move through time, your body grows. I mean, I don't know you but I assume you're at least now taller than you were at 5years.. did you 'Adapt' along the way or its just something your body is predisposed to do? A genetic code

Because we can survive before adapting to that..

This is a difficult one. How would you delineate true physiological adaptation from adaptation due to genetic predisposition? E.g. being able to adapt to sun exposure by developing a tan is genetically pre-encoded. Epigenetics modification is a pre-encoded programm allowing for dynamic adaptation. Even the ability to develop clothes enabling adaptation to weather is to some degree genetically pre-encoded by means of encoded brain size and structure. So what does true physiological adaptation mean?

Unless you nit pick over fringe cases like a primordial RNA world, artificial machine life, or panpsychism then it seems safe to say that all adaptation involves a genetic component. I'm not sure why you seem to imply that this genetic component makes the adaptation less "true," nor why you want to delineate or quantify it in isolation. Development and behavior of biological organisms is often described as being influenced by both "Nature" and "Nurture" where Nature tends to refer to the genetics and initial conditions associated with an organism and Nurture to the influences of the environment of that organism. Hard determinism is the position that these factors entirely determine the behaviors of life, and that there exists no degree of freedom or will that life can exert. I disagree with this philosophy because a) quantum mechanics can not prove that wave function collapses are random; it is assumed axiomatically due to them always appearing indistinguishable from randomness. That said, there is a lot of non-random observable data that also appears indistinguishable from randomness. Data and communication encryption is one of them. If a government agency picked up a data transfer between two persons of interest that appeared to be random, it would not be rational for them to assume that it was random noise. They could reasonably decide to err on the side of caution, and consider the possibility that the data contained some significant communication. All of this is simply to say that free will is possible, and it doesn't seem completely unreasonable to think that without it we could be entirely replaceable and replaced by AI systems since they would be able to take anything they want from us by force. The no cloning theorem of Quantum mechanics would change this dynamic if our choices and/or behavior relied significantly on wave function collapses contained within the CNS, its interface with our bodies and microbiome.

I think neil is being bit too harsh(?). And his theory of evolution is kinda debunked or flawed. First of ppl do adapt to different gravity, yes gene might not change, but we get accustom to it as he put it, but that is form of adaptation. Body adapt to zero gravity to survive, and when they comeback to earth they adapt to earth gravity. And the theory he talks about evolution has a flaw. If any life form was evolved through that process all life form becomes weaker and weaker and becomes less diverse and worse at surviving. There are simulations based on that, and it got all extinct. That simulation might be not perfect, but it does show its flaw. But ppl still seem to lean on that theory alot. And to support that theory at the beginning or whatever there had to be a life form had all the variations of all the gene, but then why the f they start to diverge… it is much easy to survive… anyway there are lot of flaws to it, and not even proven, but ppl seem to rely on it hard… Btw if someone live in zero gravity bone density gets weak then if someone lives in place where the gravity is higher than earth does that mean that person bone density is higher and much stronger? And you keep go to greater gravity you get more and more stronger? So dragon ball was right all along? Lol

You don’t understand the theory of evolution. What you just said, proves it.

Actually, that only proves that life adapte via the natural selection process 😂😂
