Season of Discovery, Blizzard's own vanilla+ server. The thing is though, we already have very nice vanilla+ servers offered by private server teams. So, will Season of Discovery be better? Let's talk about it.
I was kinda deeply invested into wow, i did play the game, i did play the AH and i did invest years into emulation and TrinityCore. My brother on the other hand no-lifed WoW like crazy. Today even he is telling me that he wants to rather play Ascension than retail because Blizzard just devalued all his achievements and invested time... Still remember when we back in the day inspected people and were like "wow, that dude spent ages in WoW!" and today all you got to do is to own a Visa credit card... We now play Ascension when we need our fix, we do Prestige and Events and we love how you just get your instant gratification like CoD. WoW retail cant decide if it wants to be oldschoold or if it wants to be tedious. I am grown up, i have a job and earn grown up money, when i got two nights to spend on WoW i want it to rock! Retail would force me to do some world quests and wait a few weeks until patch content is unlocked while Ascension has like 10 events in the same amount of time.
Ascension has been my go to server for almost 3 years now. I left Blizzard for many reasons, leaving behind 14 toons and 25k achievement's on retail and a couple geared max level toons on Classic. I can't see a time that I would ever return, been burnt too much. This project like everything Blizzard the past 10 years will be driven by passion, their passion for money. The stopped caring about their player base long ago.
Ascension can only hook new players, but they can't retain them. After a while you'll notice the server offers no quality and just keep distracting you with quantity new contents. They are terrible at balancing and fixing. Whatever build you spent tons of time, money, and effort to work on, they just destroys it.
I like your position, but this comments... They are the doomers. "Retail light" where in retail can I tank as a shaman or heal as a mage? They are taking chances and are very communicative with the community lately. "They are just porting Wotlk and calling it classic+" most of the ported spells are changed and there is a lot of new spells added too, and they are adding never seen raids and lvl banded content. I'm excited but if is bad I can just go back to era servers, and didn't have to pay any extra so no "cash grab".
I feel like most people have that "been there done that" mentality. In terms of private servers and classic anyhow. I kind of regret not trying Turtle WoW though.
Turtle is painful. The inside of some starting caves (Elwynn Forest) are filled with monsters every 5 steps . This is ridiculous, they made it too difficult for a beginner. I couldn't stand it and deleted it.
While I LOVE turtle WoW and I prefer a lot of things on there compared to classic, there are also a lot of things i don't like especially in terms of HC: Frontstabbing with rogues, OP quest rewards for their level (gardening shovel for example), some poorly written questtexts that don't properly explain where you have to go and where to return to (yes, I do actually read the quest texts and don't like to use questie), and recently that there are FAR too many players, many of which don't know english (which is ironically Blizzard's fault since they closed business in China). Having come back to classic HC after years of not playing on official servers I have to say that for now I prefer the polished quality on there, and i'm pretty hopeful about season of discovery.
I played on turtle wow until around lvl 40 and I found that the quality of the server was way below than what I was experienced on Nostalrius or Elysium. I will try SoD but I just miss the golden age of private vanilla servers before classic wow.
I personally don't think it'll be better than turtle wow, not first time around anyway. As others have mentioned, I think this is just a test run for classic+ in the next year or two. Hence why they seem to be throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. But it's still small in comparison to the changes that private servers have made. And I think SoD will have various issues with class identity being shifted with the new spells/passives being added and it may stray from the "classic" feel. Regardless though it should still be fun so I do plan on playing it.
New raids don’t count? People asked for a rework of the talent tree, runes accomplish that. Everyone asked for new content and they are getting that. Please don’t forget it’s not blizzard anymore, Microsoft now sets the direction.
@@spencer2365 you play if you want, it's retail-lite to me. nothing looks good, most of the additions don't even make sense in terms of classic - it's going away from the core idea of the original game
Season of discovery is the classic plus beta and blizzard testing the waters. Imo is amazing idea and huge risk but including myself we all critisised blizzard all those years for not taking risks and now taking risks. I know that feeling I got a 3 years old daughter with hdhd and autism is tough to play the game as much I want.
I actually think people underestimate the risk Blizzard is taking. Pservers can do whatever they want, but Blizzard is a multi-billion company that can't just do "cool stuff for the lols" or make something niche because the developer thinks it's cool and a tiny playerbase might like it. They have financial obligations and needs to actually justify any risk they take. WoW Classic by itself was a risk, but it was still releasing a known successful game. The only "risk" was whether it would still be popular today, being an old game (and pservers gave a pretty good hint towards this). Additionally, retail have gone so far from vanilla WoW that they can now consider them two different games, rather than compete with itself. And Classic was already made. Sure, there was work to be done, but the game already existed. Plus on the other hand? That means dedicating actual development time to create new content, and as a big company you can't just make random funny stuff like a pserver. If you release it and require a monthly sub, there are actual expectations for content, a certain standard to be met. I really hope it becomes a success, because this is actually a pretty huge deal for us gamers. If this is a success, it means Blizzard (and possibly other companies) can financially justify working on an old school MMORPG. If it fails, it is very likely that we won't see this kind of thing again. A success might mean they dedicate much more development time to new content for classic WoW.
It's a 15 dollar gamble on some possible fun. I've been on Twow for a few years now and love it but no irl friends play with me. I've convinced a few to join me for SOD. 15 bucks and a month for maybe a great time so why not?
Honestly one of the biggest advantages SoD will have as an official server is the client/ping. As someone who plays on private servers a lot, you're probably used to dealing with issues in those areas, but for everyone else trying out Pservers, the clunky clients and extreme ping from connecting to servers hosted in Russia or something are massively annoying.
As an Australian i can say that the clients are becoming a bigger issue than the ping. The 3.3.5 client still works well but the 1.12.1 client is becoming very unfun to play on.
I'm in the US and play Ascension, not much lag but a couple times a day there are crashes. Certainly nothing concerning enough to make me go back to Blizzard.
As others have mentioned, I think the appeal of SoD is to the casual gamer/dad gamers who don't have the time to no-life the game. This is of course before end game is released (which will probably be min maxxed to death), but we will have months to casually level a character and not feel left behind. But I agree that it won't be better than p servers, this is Blizzard after all.
Not gonna be better than Epoch but it will be a fun low commitment gaming time. 25 level cap is the most appealing reason to play + new abilities to mess around with.
Blizzard has a very hard task to do. There are classic enjoyers, and ascension/turtle enjoyers. However, there are FAR more people leaning toward plain vanilla, and Blizzard needs to find a sweetspot that still adds something new, but doesnt alienate that core classic playerbase. I hope SoD gets there.
You mean like adding abilities from later expansion to classes and thus making them completely different. Or maybe straight up copying ideas from private servers?
The p servers are trash. They changed the most stupid sht, added garbage content that doesnt fit. Its like a 10 yr old creating his own cards in yugioh by gluing card parts together. Theres no intellect found especially in turtle wow.
@@hidaruma557who cares if they stole ideas from pservers? If its a good idea and blizzard decides to implement it, i dont care if it came from pillow talk with your mom, PUT IT IN THE GAME. What kind of gate keeping logic are you using here? Do you not wear pants because it would be stealing ideas? Sometimes something is just a good idea, adapt or die.
@@hidaruma557 with that argument you could also say they stole the idea of hosting old versions of their own game from private servers. what is your point?
no. Private servers still have things scripted at the end of their expansions like they would have been years ago which is the allure. until blizzard stops changing classic expansions with buffs/nerf and changes they will never be better. No one really cares for the custom scripting anyways its a very small niche. Blizzard needs to do zero changes to a classic expansion and go through each patch. Id play that.
I really don't have the money yet to buy the game itself, so I wanted to try a private server that has similarities to the current classic wow which is season of discovery Would anybody be kind in recommending me a private server similar to Wow SOD? just to familiarize with the game, and sooner a day buy the original game and pay the subscription? ty.
I cant really make a prediction on it, theres not a massive amount of interest about it on Twow and myself and my 2 other buddies arent really interested in BlizzV+. The common theme that we keep coming to is its just too much change and doesnt really feel like V+, it feels like a totally different game and I dunno. It doesnt feel like classic anything to me, I had said on another video its a classic pig with retail lipstick on it and its hard to shake that feel Also, told you the Twow pvp server wouldnt get as much traction as you were predicting :P
@zday40k I imagine a big reason for that is that there are a lot of people not willing to pay a monthly subscription to blizzard, which is understandable.
@@Labroidas Theres a couple things I could add to that mentality that you see a lot on the server. Quite the vast majority of people are REALLY REALLY against botting, gold selling, and GDKP on the server and the admin look into reports of these things and deal with them very quickly. There is a little botting yes but as we know the admin cant be checking every person playing all the time but i can tell you if you report a person botting you will have a reply from a GM within about 5 minutes and if they are botting you will not see that character again. I suppose im trying to say that you feel heard when you report something to them vs blizzards response and you can see that you actions directly help the server, you know that kinda way?
Class identity in Vanilla WoW is one of the top 3 most important features. I agree with most of the things but, blizzard killing the class identity and basically making it a classless game.I will remain on TurtleWow .I do not want a warlock to tank for me ,nor a mage heal me etc.etc. They should have just tweaked the classes for a bit more balance and add 1-2 more abilities in their rotation.People want the classic zones and leveling and feel of the whole world .People wanted the strong class identity and immersion it brings. I have never, ever heard in my wow ''career '' playing since 2004 : '' hey ...wouldnt it be nice if that mage could heal us '' .NO .People wanted maybe 1 more button aside from frostbolt.People wanted more quests and stories within the existing zones ,maybe enlarge and change a bit some of the zones, give them new stories, new cool chain quests etc (example : Ashenvale elves have a rogue general who is leading vengefull night elves in to the Barrens and 1/3rd of the zone is occupied .Make a lv 15-20 dungeon connected with it . Give some cool stories that gets you to battle demons in Blasted Lands . .Make hybrid classes playable ,add some needed spells to all classes . Example : Paladins getting CS.Taunt, aoe heal based on a proc or a CD .Hunters ,make Arcane shot relevant and part of the rotation (for example if you have serpent sting on the target ,arcane shot does some huge % more dmg but has a 12 sec cd .Make mages/warlocks have 2 spells ..1 main (Sb/fb) and another a proc or cooldown reliant. Get druid bears to have a parry ( a lv 2 boar can parry but a druid bear cant ...) .Make it so elemental shamans/boomkins /SP do not run out of mana so easily ... Bring back all the scrapped content like vanilla outland ,Hyjal ,Emerald dream stuff ,dragon isle .Tweak the old raids etc etc etc .BU NO .... get warlocks to TANK ,cause that's what ppl want ... and throw a bunch of retail spells at classes
private servers often kept most of their playerbase regardless of what Blizzard did. I think SoD can compete for population, but also introduce new players who might be more interested in the pserver variants
why dont they just have era servers for all expansions? i dont get it... if they dont add a tbc and a wotlk era server there will be private servers forever
Any info how the SoD installation will be? We'll get a SoD version to download on Nov 30th? If so, gotta be fast if you want to get your desired name(s). Or is it enough for now to have WoW Classic installed (old version, not wrath classic as it will update to 1.15)?
I think it will be. After playing private servers for almost a decade, I simply have no interest or hope left in private servers. Buggy as fuck (Firestorm, Warmane's MoP and tons of others) Faked population numbers (Warmane's Wrath) Overhyped pile of shits that die super fast (PlayTBC) Servers that never even end up being released (Corecraft lmao) Having to start from 0 due to new fresh realms coming out (Kronos and Sunwell) Super shady staff (Elysium)
No it wont be better, its a lazy ass way of doing classic + it will be dead the second week. They cant even mess with talents and make ret or boomy viable, they're a trash company now and the only people that are excited about it are the people who keep giving blizzard there money. C'mon people they have been milking people of there money since warlords of draenor. You get a better experience for free on private servers smh
I m hesitant. I played on nostalrius, kronos 3 or 2, elyseum. Northdale. All of them closed or became ghost town. When official classic came, i could play quietly from lvl 1 to Naxx. And afrer ftom bc to LK. I m trying turtle wow: pve server is full of xiao and pvp one has 2k, 2k5 population and feels empty: no bgs, hard to find party to dungeon. Even if the devs did a fantastic job to add zones and quests, the game has flaws and terrible bugs. The addons list to download to play the game properly is as long as my arm. SoD will have the advantage to be stable, populated, and new. Wait and see.
I will just like little bit less power in season of discovery and some new raids/dungeons from warcraft 3 campaign, mybe in caverns of time. But that's just my opinion, most of the people tell that they like to be op.
Blizzard could come up with the greatest concept, but we've all already seen from how they handled the Classic servers that they will fumble it incredibly quickly. Season of Discovery will just once again be flooded with bots, the playerbase will default to GDKP runs because gold buying is both unpunished and incredibly cheap, and ultimately Blizzard will just put in the WoW Token because they shed any last pretense of integrity they had by implementing it in Classic Wrath. I have zero faith in Season of Discovery, and I can only look to those who do as pitifully naive or pitifully consoomerpilled.
Whether or not the "plus features" are going to be better is yet to be seen, and some of it is also personal preference. But there is one thing that SoD will have that no of the unofficial competition does; official Blizzard servers. This is huge, because it is an MMO and being official servers simply attract much more people. Classic WoW and Hardcore both have shown this to be true. Aside from that it will not carry the same "risk" of getting shut down like a private server and the latency will very likely be way better than what any private server can bring. Official servers are simply a huge plus (no pun intended), and honestly I think a lot of players will pick SoD even if they might slightly enjoy the plus features of a specific pserver more. But I do think your points about love to the game are valid. If SoD will be seen as an "afterthought" thing, something with minimal financial investment from Blizzard, then it simply will not provide enough. I think worst thing that can happen is that it does not get much success because it did not get enough attention from Blizzard, and in turn they then deem it not worth their time. It seems like they start slowly, not taking too much of a risk, but that can bite them and be the reason for low success.
NO, SoD is just a teaser what will wow 2 looks like after the worldsoul saga ends.. and NO, it will be not better, used stuff from pandaria and other expansions.. as always recolor stuff.. i will stay on vanilla pserver, not some kindabullshit vanilla++++LFGBT
Blizzard is dead...they are no longer trend setters but followers. It'll keep the diehard fans preoccupied for a few months of subscription numbers. But im done with whatever games they make. They used to be the polish on strong game design...now its just a shiny money grab company with a closet full pf skeletons.
They have retail mindset which means SOD will be rubbish, they just don’t get what Classic+ people are about . Project epoch I think will be the closest thing to Classic + . I have never played on a private server I’m just too scared I will screw files up will not be able to play official or private 🤪
I hope it turns out great but I am very skeptical aswell. I am not impressed by what I have seen thus far and am sticking with team private server where I raid in a semi serious dad guild 4-5 nights a week. I will be watching to see.
Lmao Duskhaven completely lost the plot with all the extra changes. I hope they prove me wrong but the scope creep is unbelievable, which is probably why they're behind schedule.
That's such a bad take, classic has already proved successful, adding this to it wouldnt be done otherwise. The amount of time and resources they are putting into this tells this will be good.
@@grahamleeper8015It isn't just about it making money, it's the fact it keeps players interested in wow and seeing as you need a sub to play it does make them money from people who may not like retail. Honestly i have zero clue why some of you want this to fail.
the drop rate was too high vanilla classic launch imo so i quit 5 minutes in because i knew it would be progression as the beginning mobs were yellow like wotlk, so when tbc hit i only wanted to play on tbc , which blizzard shut down for good? i spent more money boosting a toon for tbc then i have blizzard anything else in over 10 years . they dont like money is all , corrupt class a negative i wanna destroy everything about my game because i hate money ... corporation... smh
@@joshabernathy972 some wow fans already designed the world on UE5 and even combat, im not talking about re-design wow completely but more a remake like D2R
Probably not good idea, because of performance issues less players will be able to play it which isn't good for Blizz business. But WoW graphics is about art style, it's perfect, just a bit more refining and resolution for textures is enough, but not changing the feeling of the models, as they did on retail versions.
A lot of us don’t mess with private servers. It’s a little too “hardcore” to go that out of the way for wow. I just want blizzards official versions. No fuss
No way lmao. It's just going to be a rushed mashed together piece of trash made by literally a smaller team that gets paid less than lets say the Turtle WoW team. Blizzard's classic section is basically run by a skeleton crew, the bare bones amount of people needed for them to actually call it a 'team'. This is why ticket wait times are 2 and a half months as apposed to a few hours on pservers. Blizzard devs also notoriously get paid practically nothing, literally not enough to even buy lunch at their own cafeteria at blizzard HQ. They are basically just a team of interns in the revolving door that is Blizzard devs, who most of which have not even been at the company 2 years, the guy that headed up 2019's classic 'left' the company some time ago. And despite all of this, it's going to have more monetization than most pservers do outside of maybe trashmane. They already have plans to add a way to buy rezes for HC classic in about 6 months time. And all of this is ONTOP of the fact that Blizzard's classic servers themselves are a broken, bot ridden buggy mess that they should be ASHAMED to have their name attached to. Most private servers are far more polished and bot free than Blizzard servers could ever be, because Blizzard refuses to actually put forth the commitment needed to do so. There will NEVER be an 'offical' Blizzard server for classic anything that is better than the best private servers out there, simple as that. -Fuck Blizzard Entertainment specifically.
