Not a GOAT advocate myself (except the very odd occasion of trolling here and there), but I see a lot of Fed fans in super defensive and salvage mode this year. If you think he's the GOAT, it's fine to refer to him as such. Neither Djoker nor Rafa fans cared that he was miles ahead of both of them in slams, weeks at #1 and YE#1 long before they caught up and (in Djoker's case) surpassed him; he was never the GOAT to them. Plus, if Fed fans stick to their guns over Fed as GOAT, it will keep the Djoker Bros busy on these boards and provide meaning and purpose in their lives, as we all know they are more obsessed with Fed than they are fans of Djoker. ;-)

@@mantaishere I'm a djoker fan and speak for most of us djoker fans. We thought that fed was the goat until djoker reached at least 19 or in my case until he reached 20.

Most of the Djoker fanbase on these boards and elsewhere in tennis fandom have been calling Federer 'weak era champ' for years. I simply cannot see how anyone can believe this about a sportsman and simultaneously think he's the greatest ever, because the whole point of the weak era argument is to invalidate his achievements.

@@aranyaism I admit that Djokovic has trumped most of Federer's records but you have to admit he had a target to chase most of his career and it's all thanks to the man than he supplanted. It's quite a different psychological game creating records and then having to defend them compared to chasing them, even having the benefit of playing the very person holding those records (who happens to be in decline because of age). Basically, he had the underdog status for a good majority of his career and had less pressure because he had 'nothing to lose.' It sure is satisfactory to be beating the very player that most regarded as the GOAT at the time, no?

@@miguelfreitas8694 That's just speculations. It's not something we will ever know. They are almost 6 years apart and Federer came very close to beating him at Wimbledon 2019. I think their abilities are probably closer than what many give credit. Djokovic has the benefit of being the younger one.

well, what about the fact that he destroyed Marin Cilic this year (two 6-2 sets won) at the French Open? (Granted Cilic is not exactly in his prime, either - but he was good enough to win his first round demolition-style). Unless Cilic was just giving the win to Roger, I would say that is a very good sign for a guy who has just come back from being out over a year, and having two knee surgeries, and he was only playing Roland Garros to get a little match play. Then, in the next round he out-grinded Koepfer, who is as tough a clay court grinder as there is. I believe Federer would have won that in at least an hour less time had there been fans to inspire him. Then he would have probably played Berretini, and - who knows. Anyways, I use his Roland Garros this year as my main piece of evidence in arguing against you, as you too-easily pass him off as being done "at his age." Who knows! Maybe his knee is going to be stronger than it has been in a few years, and he is going to find a way to play quick-strike tennis to win points faster, and will enjoy playing on tour more than he ever has. That is what sort of happened at the '17 Aus Open - he enjoyed playing tennis more than ever. I think it's safe to say that, if his knee heals strongly and he comes back, he will again enjoy it more than ever.

@@johnjeffers1524 I mean, your optimism is refreshing, I suppose. As for what happened at the slams this year, I got really bummed out days ago when I thought back to Wimbledon and realised that Fed would have very likely made the final again if his knee had fully healed.

@peanutoct he's said the injury is medial meniscus. The is no way to repair it. The just cut it clean so it doesn't gray.

More cartilage surgery and it will wear thin leaving him to soon either have bone on bone or require experimental prostheses. failure could lead to early knee replacements. You are right he might be heading for long term problems.

I think he *will* come back - and I think he will be able to win a 250 - but maybe just one. IDK. You are very soberly hopeful and rational, there - a goal of winning 24 more matches would be do-able. ... But! I know Federer would not try to come back one more time just to break such a record, especially at 250 events. ... Anyways, I believe that, as long as whatever surgery he had was a success (I am wondering if it was "micro-fracture" surgery), and the knee heals up strong, he will find a way to play at a high enough level to win a few rounds at Majors - and, hey, with the crowd-help, and the opponent fighting the Federer Mystique (which would be stronger than ever), he can surely make some noise in the second week of a Major. ... Ah whatever; I am pipe-dreaming. I just hope his knee heals up as strong as possible.

For the real tennis fans it doesnt matter anymore 1 GS or nothing in this situation. He did already almost everything on Tennis. We have to enjoy every single match he will willing to play and of course hoping the best for him He did a lot on this Sport. I am a Nadal supporter but Federer is the best of all time.
