Buck Futtler Novak Djokovic has 12 'Slams while these two guys were around. Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray each have 3. Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic have 1. The last 10 or so years have probably been the most competitive in the history of men's tennis. There's plenty of parity in men's tennis. It's harder to win a match than it's ever been.
Stan Marsh, and the fact that these two guys have managed to be number one and two while in the most competitive era of men's tennis just speaks to them being the two greatest tennis players ever.
Сава Стевановић Think about that. Djokovic is one of the five greatest players ever. His career has risen, peaked, and is now on the decline, all on a typical timeline for tennis stars. Federer and Nadal? They were on top when Djokovic was a rising star, they were on top with him through his peak, and they remain on top as his career winds down. They are a constant in a way that is unprecedented.
fishflake1209 They didn't remain on top. They both had some injuries and drop in form, like what Đoković is having the last two years. Federer went 5 years without wining a grand slam. They both came back from that and started wining again, and I hope Đoković can do the same.
This was literally the first tennis thing I ever saw. I was 10 years old my cable was off and this was the only thing on tv I became fascinated. Made a fan out of me.
You picked a hell of a first tennis game to watch my friend! This was easily one of the best matches ever played, so dramatic, back and forth, both players playing out of their minds at times!
Kimar Origami i grew up watching tennis as well as football and basketball. easily the best match i ever saw with my own two eyes, although i was really sad to see Federer lose that match
I played tennis myself, and sometimes watched along with my dad for short amounts of times, but this was the first match where I was completely engaged and at the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end.
When you showed Bjorn Borg in the crowd I thought you were also going to mention that he was the last man to complete the French Open/Wimbledon double, which is what Nadal achieved here.
Channel Slam is a unique and extraordinary achievement. More men won the career grand slam (5) compared to channel slam (4) in open era. Not even Djokovic achieved it.
I will always respect Novak the most because he came into an era where aguably the 2 greatest men's players were at their peak. Novak couldv'e won absolutely nothing, but boy has he shown them....
Hi, I don't know your name. I was aware of all the facts that you have mentioned in the video. But the best thing about your video is that you have edited, elaborated, depicted and described very beautifully. thumbs up to you and your team for this awesome video. Regards, Sunny
The only thing worse than someone posting an unoriginal stupid comment that has been overused to death, is trying to put an original cheesy spin on a stupid overused comment. You sir have failed the internet.
Even though its overlooked, 2009 final where Roddick's almighty effort against Federer failed was also great. Maybe not a top 10 greatest final but surely up there.
@@Dellen-Roger lets not forget Fed had the momentum going into the 5th. that rain really changed things. Nadal has a history of collapsing going into 5ths
The narration, it really brought home how momentous the entire occassion was. Beyond a mesmerizing 5 hours of tennis, this match right here, while they would never meet again in wimbledon after this (so far), is actually a turning point in their rivalry, and alarmed the whole world of the birth of the golden era of mens tennis.
When Nadal broke in the penultimate game, I have never heard a pub go as wild for a Tennis match in England. Not even Murray winning in 2013 topped it. Like you say, a real moment in history and I'll never forget it!
if you're the video editor for this video... thank you. That was a beauty of work. From the vhs transitions to the glitch overlays and well thought out clip-to-narration sequence at the very end. It would mean the world to me to get to know who you are because I just want to applaud you for this gift.
2008 was the best year in modern American sports. So much happened from the Giants beating the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl (to say nothing of a great NFC title game), to Bolt and Phelps dominating the Olympics, the return of a Celtics/Lakers rivalry, the last year of the old Yankee Stadium, a classic Kansas/Memphis game in the NCAA tournament, Sid Crosby getting his first taste of the Stanley Cup finals in a loss to Detroit, this match, Spain almost knocking off a team full of NBA Hall of Famers with two Gasols and a millennial teenager with a mop top (I really wanted that to happen), the first breakthrough (not debut, but significant bump in stats) year for Leo Messi, the friggin Rays made the World Series, Josh Hamilton's appearance in the Home Run Derby, and the last major won by Tiger Woods in a legendary match against Rocco Mediate, where we found out he won with a stress fracture. I don't even like golf and that's pretty impressive. Just so much stuff going on. It seemed like history was being made every other week.
2016 was a really good year as well. The only weak area was the super bowl, which came off a bit boring, but Peyton Manning went out on top. But besides that, the Alabama-Clemson football rivalry began with one of the best championship games, Villanova beat North Carolina with a buzzer beater in one of the most exciting games ever, Golden State breaks the Bulls win record, the Cavaliers come back from 3-1 to give Cleveland its first championship in decades, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt reasserting their place as the most dominating athletes in their respective disciplines, and the Cubs erasing their 108 year drought with a 3-1 comeback that culminated in one of the greatest games of all time. A lot of excitement
My Mum and I have always watched Wimbledon together. But this was the year where I really began to understand the rules of the game. I was 11 or 12 years old, and for that tournament to be cemented in history by such a brilliant, and groundbreaking final, it made me a tennis fan for life.
And with Andy winning five years later, I couldn't ask for more. To see Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray at their peak. I feel as if men's tennis has never been so highly contested
First tennis game i watched. I had never really cared for the sport, but I caught this while flicking channels and decided to stay for a bit and as it went on I was hooked. I wanted Nadal to win because I knew he was the underdog here and because to 11 year old Nadal looked cooler. Incredible game
DO the 2017 Australian Open next! It was quite possibly the most important match in terms of history of all time and has an amazing backstory with the two both slamless for several years and struggling in previous seasons.
P GB no. People were thinking Fed would retire soon, and they were both injured the year before. That tournament was a massive resurgence and Federer struggled through the hardest draw anyone has ever gotten, before somehow winning 5 games in a row after going a break down in the third. Wimbledon 2008 is no more important than Roland Garros 2013 would have been if Djokovic hadn't touched the net on that over head in the 5th set when he was up a break.
That 2017 AO Final was so weird. It was well hyped but the sets were so short. The only set that seemed actually competitive was the 5th. Tbh it just felt like they wanted to make it 5 sets for the fans so they rushed through the first 4. The nostalgia was nice, but it is not an all time great match.
Wild how history repeats itself - Santana winning Wimbledon and Spain winning Euros, then Rafa and Spain winning in 2008, now Alcaraz and Spain winning in 2024. Honor to have seen it live
I didn't see the entire match but I do remember seeing how it ended and my goodness there was some great sportsmanship at the end too! Federer and Nadal were so dominant back then! I haven't been following tennis much at all today, but as far as I know I believe both Federer and Nadal are still pretty awesome!
This reminds of a story from when I was in High School. There was an unpopular, likely autistic kid who one day in class had told a semi-funny joke and some people laughed mostly out of pity though but it made him happy. The next day he said the same thing and a few people laughed but not nearly as many as the previous day but still it made him smile and encouraged him. So in a pathetically painful attempt to gain popularity and make friends, he continued to say the same thing everyday for months on end and by the end of the school year he had alienated the few friends he did have, and became the laughing stock of the whole school. So just stop, its not funny or edgy, it never was and never will be. And if your just trolling, can't you at least come up with something original.
E DubZ I had a similar experience this previous year. There was this autistic kid (literally) in one of my classes everyday who would play this clip of someone screaming loudly in a movie and laugh about it, and this one girl would always encourage him and act like it was funny because she knew it annoyed everyone else or because she felt bad or I don't even know. I asked her to stop. She said I was being rude. My one friend who is viewed as one of the nicest people in the school asked her to stop. She didn't. Her own friends told her to stop encouraging him, and she didn't. She didn't even like the kid either. She was playing cards with my friends and I one day and complained about him being in another class with her.
One of the best ones yet! You've done so much work for these and it really shows. Really have been enjoying this seires keep it up man. Some of the best content I've seen in a while.
Consider doing Djokovic vs Federer 2019 Wimbledon Final with the historic tie breaking game in the 5th set. I know it just happened but it could be something worth doing a few years down the road
And now you have the 2019 semi-final between Nadal and Djokovic that was just as good as this one if not better. Both matches were amazing. But that wasn't the final but this match was.
Sriram Ilango verge of mental breakdown the whole match, especially when Federer did that awful djokosmash lol. I knew it was going to end up at deuce in that final game, I was pacing back and forth and actually left the room a few times lmao
Adam Farmer #JFT96 I wouldn't say that, yes imo Federer is the GOAT currently, but it's not that plain and simple. He's been dominated by Nadal his whole career, on hard courts and clay courts, he's 3-9 in grand slams against Nadal, he has 5 less masters than Nadal, no olympic gold in singles whereas Nadal has won gold, 1 davis cup compared to Nadal's 4, has only 3 more grand slams than Nadal even though he's played 20 more slams than him, Nadal's win rate in slam quarter finals, semi finals and finals is better than Federer's, he only has 1 more year end no.1 award than Nadal . List goes on The media perpetuates this idea that the player with the most grand slams is the GOAT, but it's not that simple. Imo if Nadal catches up with Federer in slams, or surpasses him, then he will definitely be the GOAT.
Tom Deverson There is no doubting Nadal's greatness. He's untouchable on clay. Nobody will ever come close to the dominance he has displayed on that surface. On the other surfaces, Federer is better. 11-9 vs. Nadal on hard courts, 2-1 on grass. Something you didn't mention was how the surfaces have changed to better suit a player like Nadal. Federer is a fast court player. His dominance of the Aussie Open, Wimbledon and the US Open caused a massive change in surfaces tournaments use. All courts now are slower, even the grass at Wimbledon. This is designed as a way to lengthen rallies and ultimate create more compelling matches. Courts have a rating from slow-fast. There are no fast courts anymore. The best you'll get is "medium-fast." Caroline Wozniacki said the hard courts at Indian Wells were slower than the clay. Slower courts + greatest slow court player ever = Lots of Rafa success.
Tom Deverson Sure, but if we look just at hard court totals, so not Clay, Nadal's by far best, and not Grass, Fed's best, Fed has 11 Grand Slam titles while Nadal has 4. Nadal may only be 3 back total, but he's won only 6 Grand Slams outside of the French, while Fed has won 12 outside of Wimbledon When it is all said and done, Nadal may end up with way more than Fed, but not without showing he excels on one court, while Fed excels on two However, whatever happens in the future, there is little doubt that these two will be the two greatest male tennis players of all time, whichever order you put them in
So the dark horse in the greatest race was Djokovic. That was in like 2014. He’s got winning records against both, has 20 slam titles and is younger than Federer and Nadal, who’s knees probably won’t let him stay much longer in the game.
To this day this match is the single greatest sporting event I've ever witnessed. Immaculate tennis from both players, and I cried exhausted tears of elation when Nadal finally won the match. This match still doesn't get the recognition it deserves imo
One of the most amazing things about the matchup of Federer and Nadal is how different they are. Nadal is a giant with massive raw power who relies heavily on the serve and volley, and his lefty status. Federer is a skill player whose returns and accuracy are second to none; you'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who consistently hits the ball into worse spots for his opponents. It's a battle of opposites every time, and they both showcase just how amazing the peak of each style can be. I'm not a huge fan of tennis as a sport, but I could watch these two play for days on end.
I have to say when these SB series started coming out, especially The Worst, as someone who mainly followed for Bois, I was really bummed out at the change in direction. However, this, Beef History, and The Worst have really come into their own as storytelling showcases that balance humor and information. Kudos.
Tiger Woods chip in at the 2006 Masters or his putt to win the 2008 US Open. Edgar Renteria or Luis Gonzalez walk off hits at the 1997 and 2001 World Series, respectively. Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary against UM in 1984
Amazing video. The way it was constructed, edited and narrated, all of which created tension (at least for those who did not know the outcome of the match like me) was lovely :) Great job :)
AxiomUK it was good feedback! I feel strongly that each episode should stop at the moment, but I’ve come to understand that “the moment” isn’t just the actual play. The immediate reactions of the players, crowd, and announcers are part of that climax
the quality of that match was low compared to this match lol. it is only mentioned because of the comeback 7-8 15-30, but that match is not even the best federer djokovic match in terms of quality. AO 2012 though definitely one of if not the greatest matches though.
