Microsoft should have done this in 2016, when Windows on ARM was announced. Since they waited 6 years for this, Apple took the opportunity and completely beat them on ARM devices. I saw this coming from kilometers away.
@randomoneforstuff3696
@randomoneforstuff3696 Год назад
I think everyone saw this coming even 12 years ago when apple released their first in-house designed CPU - the Apple A4. Considering how powerful phone ARM processors have become, it was only sensible to put an upgraded version of the phone SoC into a desktop or laptop computer.
@toerti9589

They should have done this even earlier in 2013 when the SurfaceRT was released. Which already was Windows on arm. But they never allowed 3rd party devs to compile their win32 stuff for arm, because they wanted to push their horrible winrt api. Windows Mobile and CE where perfectly fine to. yeah, 32 gb of ram is very cheap can be had for about 70 bucks. and a 512 GB nvme is about 40-50 dollars. you can build a DDR4 platform with about the same cost. obviously, not as small. but close enough. also am pretty sure you can get very close to the cost of this if you buy one of those NUC things and put 32 GB and 512 NVME in them. it makes no sense to buy this for the consumer, people that thing its impressive specs wise dont realize that ram and nvme drives are alot cheaper than they were a couple years ago. especially since DDR4 is being phased out. the arm compute platform is also very mediocre, you can beat this easily at a similar cost of an x86 machine
@rrsharizam
@rrsharizam Год назад
32GB is around $100. 512GB around $80. 8cx gen 3 is around 80% of M1 performance. Add mobo, psu, wifi $150. Is that all? 5G modem and antenna $100, Windows 11 Pro $150, Office 2021 $250, Visual Studio $250. An x86 pc for that price? Delusional. Even so, you'd still only get the crappy Intel HD Graphics.

Does the Windows boot without keyboard for e.g. remote-only usage? I don’t use Windows outside of RDB protocol or as build server cause I prefer Arch Linux + KDE as desktop. I think if it has an open bootloader with installable Linux and upgradable storage, then it would be a pretty good device, except that is misses ECC RAM which sadly mostly all devices do not have. But for plebs not caring about ECC the specs look pretty good; except the display out of course which seems much more limited than even M1 Mac Mini, MiniDP is unreliable sadly, and it’s only DP 1.2, hope it can 4k 16:9 with 60Hz for those who unlike me would use native display instead of using it over a remote protocol. I would use Linux desktop with monitor attached for testing. But RDB with Windows is pretty good over remote for any productivity apps except watching videos, video production or gaming.

Microsoft needs to design their own chips, so that they can optimize properly..

Thing is, competing with qualcomm is almost impossible. Their arm chips are the fastest in the world, affordable, and lately, they run pretty cool aswell. It could take a decade for Microsoft to have the production capacity and quality to be able to even compete.

🤓🤓🤓 Nice, does it support 4K120hz with a type-c to hdmi 2.1 adapter ? 4K HDR ? can the internal wifi be upgraded down the road ? how easy is it to replace the internal Nvme drive ? I know this is a developer machine but curious how well it handles a bit of entertainment.
@katbryce
@katbryce Год назад
From teardowns elsewhere, it comes with a 2230 M.2 nvme which could be replaced very easily. 2230 is of course not the most common size of nvme you can get. Maybe you can get a 2280 in there, but the source I found wasn't clear on that.

@@gumikacsa526 thanks, I'm aware of the DP Alt mode support, just wondering if it's enough to support 4k120hz. I saw qualcomm listed this chip could support 4k120 but saw no confirmation from Microsoft on the product site. They only mention dual 4k60hz.
