What I’d give to get the chance to learn the design process from such a great designer. What an amazing interview, his insight into boat design is truly invaluable! Great job, Ziggy. You’re preserving a huge part of maritime history.

Jim's first work with the material was for my friend Andy Zimmerman right here in High Point. They wanted a sailboat for people who did not want to undertake conventional sailing - something anybody could do. They succeeded pretty well I think. Andy still has the first WR17 and I sailed it for an entire winter back about 2012. I can remember them testing the prototypes for the 16 and 17 here on Oak Hollow Lake in the late 1990's.

This is definitely my favorite video you’ve put out there Ziggy. What an amazing experience that must have been to be with the man himself and in that one of a kind Windrider castle of sorts. So cool!!!

Wonderful interview and interesting topic. Wish I would have been sitting next to you and Jim during your interview. What a wonderful personality. Jim is a true part of Americana multi hull history. What knowledge wisdom experience and stories he has. Fantastic job Ziggy! I feel privileged to own a Windrider 16 designed by the guru of multihulls!

Great! I loved the description of the rudder's loss of power when surfing. I can add that you need not get into 7 foot ocean waves for that to happen. When surfing my little sailing outrigger in New Haven harbor in 3 foot waves, I experience the same loss of power. I have to get the rudder at a high angle of attack, and even then it hardly works. In larger waves I have broached. Learned my lesson.... Love your Windrider cabin, Jim.

Jim, my hero! Thank you Ziggy. His description of hanging on was wonderful. I had the same thing happen, only my Cross 18 sailed away after I lost hold. Asked the same question, “Is this the day?” It wasn’t. But boat sailed off over the horizon...

@@ZiggyLavengood I know, bummer huh? Hey, I agree fully with Jim’s assessment that the Windrider 17 is fine as is, learn to love it. But...Squirt’s outboard leeboard set under the bench seat with haul-down and haul-up, is a candidate for crossover application to something between the akas on the Windrider. Take a look at it this year and we can chat. Again, only going to improve certain pointing angles in lighter wind, but worth looking at.

Excellent, Ziggy! I wish I'd known you were going to talk to Jim Brown. My main question is when will they start making Windrider 17's again, or maybe making Jim's improved version, whatever that might be. Very interesting discussion about the lack of a centerboard/leeboard for light winds, and the lack of rudder force at high speeds. While Jim made it sound like a feature, it sounds dangerous to me that you are out of control when going fast down a wave!

@@ZiggyLavengood I am looking forward to that! I love the look of his seaclipper 16 and 20. It is almost like a home-built plywood windrider, but with a centerboard instead of a keel.
