You said u were interested in thoughts from ppl only sortof into AOS, so here goes: I started in 2nd edition, but fell off to mostly invest in Warcry. I did play a few games + a tournament in AOS 3rd edition. I enjoyed it (gorgeous game, solid balance) but it never grabbed me. Felt like 3rd edition took a long time for games that were often in my experience decided by just a couple key decisions (or forgotten rules), and of course like you've covered here, battle tactics are an incredibly unfun way to decide a game. I'm interested in 4th. I would say I'm waiting for the article on battle tactics to decide, but really I'm likely to try a tournament out regardless, so whether or not I play a lot of 4th edition will likely hinge on how smoothly games flow. GW has experimented with underdog mechanics a bit in Warcry, and it succeeds in creating closer games, but honestly when every game comes down to the last dice roll, no games come down to the last dice roll, you know what I mean? If AOS4 takes 3 hours on every game only to have it come down to something arbitrary then that won't be satisfying, so it will be interesting to see how they walk this tightrope. The novelty of artificially close games wore off after a while in Warcry, and gaming the underdog mechanic quickly just became a different type of strategic layer, understanding when to sandbag points and when not to. So neither good nor bad, really.

Love the video, great to get these insights, and love the excitement you bring. I agree that a mechanics that rewards you for "playing poorly/being unlucky" is tricky - how to balance that, but we need to see how its comes out in real tournaments, perhaps only real heavy players will be affected by this - loosing where they should have won narrowly.

I was in the “fire battle tactics into the sun” camp in AoS3. So much so I pretty much stopped playing when 10tb came out last year. I hated how the game scoring was largely unrelated to what was happening on the board, and had more to do with “did I include a unit who can run in circles and do back flips in the corner so I can guarantee 5/5 BTs each game.” And if your codex does not have gimmie BTs, sorry come back next edition. Hoping score will more naturally reflect game state in the new edition.

Thanks for another great video Rob! Regarding the underdog mechanic, I think that, even when the intention is good, it will be just another thing you play around. Players aren't gonna be oblivious of it and just score the most points they can in the early rounds, when that gives the opponent and advantage, without too much of a downside. It's like the current turn order: if you can afford it, you always want to give your opponent the turn, so that you get the extra CPs, and other battleplan specific perks, until you take the double turn in a decisive moment for the win. In AoS4, that's literally what will happen. You will just lay low until you can deliver a blow from which your opponent can't come back.

Always putting up great content thanks for your hard work. As someone consistently bottom tables I don’t initially like the underdog mechanic so much. Top table people will work out how to play around this/ pivot towards control and denying you points so will continue to smash it I recon. But the 3-2 2-3 area might become a bit more muddled. My couple of 2-3 results rather than 4-1 mean a lot more to me as it was a fair match I wouldn’t want to win a game because I’m not as good as someone else. But I’m sure it’ll still be fun as hell.

As someone who is bringin in newbies into AoS and FRP, i love these changes. In FRP, it is easy, first session is introduction plus bit of combat. 2nd session is bit of combat, bit of skills, 3rd is lot of roleplay and bit of skillchecks, and 4th session is bit of all. By 5th session, most of new people are in, hooked, and started learning on their own to be better at the game. In 3.0 AoS that is extremely hard to do, but this 4th ed is more and more poised to be like that, and I love it!

This spoiled battle actually makes me teal happy. To achieve max points you need to make the decision of controling three objectives or control two and deny one. It really disentives pile up in the middle if you want to win, which i know isnt everyones cup of tea, but it makes this tactical game, more tactical.

The underdog mechanic can be really good if for instance, there's a minimum point gap to reach (like, you are the underdog if you have 2 points less than your opponent). That way, there's no tech of "I'm going to lose points to beat you with bonuses", but also that means the games are going to be more two-sided than "one shot and gg". But I know that the double turn thing can help a winning army to be the underdog, so wait and see for the point costs i'd say, because if we have more things on the board, that means we can have more units to tank the alpha strike and to hold objectives in our territory, so the person who is alpha striked can still score stuff So wait and see as they say, still hyped for new edition!

12 old battleplans is a good choice. We've always had a certain number of battleplans which weren't great. If we can have 12 solid battleplans thats a huge plus even if those battleplans are old. As for the underdog mechanic I think you're overstating the effect it will have. The underdog mechanic can help with your scoring but it doesn't bring back that key piece you lost. If I don't have any good units left +1 to hit wont help much. Battle tactics are a good idea poorly implemented in 3rd. I absolutely agree that they need to be more interactive. Hopefully the next article will be good. I'm not sure I understand the place of power complaint. Scenery benifits are available to both armies. Doesn't this balance things out if the terrain is mid board?
@leehowell8908

So the way that bodyguard rule reads is subtract one from attacks of models "in combat" with the general, not specifying attacks that target the general, does this mean if you have multiple units in combat with their one unit all their attacks regardless of target are minus one attack?

4th edition so far looks 50/50 for me. I like magic/prayer system. I like the warscrolls. I like the keywords. But everything else just feels like a game that's being designed away from me. Feels when 4th edition launches I'm going to have to rewrite the game to fit my needs. But I shouldn't need to, and I feel the changes that I would want would allow everyone to have the game that they want. But instead it seems like they're designing the game for 2 groups of people. Beginners playing Spearhead, or tournament players. Everyone else, house rule the shit out of the game. The whole modular system is starting to feel pointless as well. When they talked about it, it sounded like a Lego type system. You have some blocks, take the blocks you want and build the game you want, awesome! Now it's feeling more like something else, like a modular house? Here's the modules, build your house, don't want that module in your house? You now have a giant hole in your house because that module is needed.

What don’t you like? / what did you like about 3rd?
@OfPeas
@OfPeas 2 месяца назад
@@cameronchen2346 Long winded reply here, sorry. I'm going with the assumption that battle tactics are going to be largely the same. Perhaps a bit less of them, no faction specific, whatever. They just add time to the game and often manipulate the player to building a list to get battle tactics done. So my friends and I don't play with them and most likely won't play with them in 4th edition. Which would be fine, we're not super competitive, but we like good games. I think the module system is being poorly used. Right now, I won't be playing with the Battle Tactics module, which means there's no deterrent to a double turn at all. So clearly the game as it is being shown off right now feels like you play the game Spearhead, or you play with all the rules. I think getting an extra command point for having less auxiliary drops is a mistake. If I have a unit I want to play with but it doesn't fit in my regiments I don't want to be punished for that, I already am giving up the first priority. I don't think the Underdog should get an extra command point. I think the player going second in a round should get the extra command point in an effort to weather certain things that might be coming up due to double turns. They have showed with the coming Battle Plans that there's already a focus on trying to support the Underdog. Leave it in the Battle Plans only. With the roles that they are creating for the units, getting your best "matchups" on the table is going to have a large influence on the game. Remember, I don't plan on playing with Battle Tactics. So now double turn is just going to let someone possibly play more into getting their matchups. With the new 3" range for all melee, getting your matchups could mean wiping a unit without a reply from the other player. (We tried using 3" range with 3rd edition rules, doesn't go super well.) So you build a list with an auxiliary drop. Your opponent falls behind a single victory point. Start of a new round, they now have 2 extra command points at the start of a round and they're getting the double turn. Just feels.....like it's being designed with certain players in mind.
@cameronchen2346
@cameronchen2346 2 месяца назад
@@OfPeas thanks for your thoughts! I think you’re right that playing without tactics could leave the double being too strong. I’m not sure how they intend to balance not playing with certain modules if the points and other rules depend on them :/ I guess we’ll have to see
@OfPeas
@OfPeas 2 месяца назад
@@cameronchen2346 It's a possibility they don't intend to balance it around that. Instead just swap like for like. Don't like this Battle Tactics Module? Put this one in instead. I started getting back into AOS a few months ago and played a few games, so it sounds like I'm AOS 4.0's target audience. I have mixed feelings about underdog mechanics. I like the idea of underdog mechanics for games when I'm playing casually with my brother, having beers and forgetting rules, if it means we will probably still have a fun time even if someone makes a big mistake early on. I'm not sure how much I like it for competitive games, for the reasons others have said: it could become just another system mechanic that experienced players will learn how to optimize, and it doesn't seem very fun to decide "should I be winning or not." And I definitely don't like that it feels detached from the narrative fantasy of the game - why will my dudes suddenly fight better near a specific objective when I have fewer victory points? How do they even know what victory points are??? It's the same as the problem with battle tactics - feels less like a fantasy simulation and more like a board game. I'm overall excited for the new edition though, and love these videos! When I was reading the WarCom article I literally thought, "I'll just wait until Rob explains it"
@kayosiiii

I genuinely think that not having points wasn't a mistake. Everything about the core rules design of GWs big skirmish games scream story game to me, having a game with some 20 odd asymmetrical factions , every unit having unique abilities. Having abilities that scale in different ways. Having a non gridded board with terrain. There's not really a way to make that a good competitive format. You can sort of get there if lock down aspects of the game, the total army size, the terrain, but only if there is a lot of rules churn. You have to change things fast enough that nobody gains mastery. Competive warhammer becomes a game of lonely people sitting in their rooms building armylists (and quite honestly this attracts a certain type of person) GWs mistake was cultivating this sort of gamer for a few decades then building a game for a different audience. You have to spend some time cultivating an audience for a game where you expect people to pay $100s of dollars on plastic figurines. I am happy that there are still narrative and open play options though. If they drop those it will kill my interest in AoS.
@eviltables7235

I don't think underdog mechanics are too good, makes everything feel like Mario Kart if they have too much of an effect. I think their main objective should have been to make AoS games faster but not sure if that will be happening yet, especially when underdog mechanics will make it more likely that a game has to be played until the last round.

I understand they want to make games more closely contested, BUT it feels a little like penalising someone for being good. I generally agree with your sentiment on allowing for a high skill expression. I think GW is going a little overkill in the handholding. I think they’re really trying to target casual gamers who are on the fence about miniature wargames. They’re trying to create an ecosystem where a brand new player can jump in and either win by luck or not lose that badly to someone who’s been playing for 10 years. When you’re dealing with large skill gaps in a game like AoS or 40k you can address it in a few ways… you can lower the ceiling (limiting skill expression) or raise the floor (limiting how bad you get burned by making the wrong decision). The other thing you can do is create a ramp that new players can take that eventually merges into the main flow that the game plays in (this is what I imagine spearhead is trying to be) The issue I have here is that they’re lowering the ceiling, raising the floor, and building the on ramp. I guess we will have to wait an see how it works in practice but as of right now there just seems to be too many things they’re adding that take you away from the table so you and your opponent can discuss on the side all these new things you can do now in this battle plan since one of you is losing. If this seesaws every turn then it’s just less time spent actually playing the game.
