Wireless FPV using your own goggles

Hi everyone.
I have come up with a system where you can use your existing FPV goggles, provided they have an HDMI or AV IN socket, with your "Phone Drone".
This is without the need for a tablet with HDMi out, tablet holder, cables etc etc.
So if you have a Mavic of any type, FIMI, Hubsan, Eachine or whatever, it will work.
It uses just 2 or 3 components, is really cheap, and works a treat and pops on your belt with just your AV lead going up to your goggles.
Components to do it for AV IN goggles are the 3D Print, USB Power Pack with 2 USB ports, a USB powered Cast Dongle and a USB powered HDMI to AV adapter.
For goggles with HDMI port they need even less!
Usual discliamers apply but I have found no issues or interferrence with it so far when using it with my Mavic Pro 1 on an Android Phone.
Enjoy

For iPhones as far as I know you use AirPlay - that way it connects directly to the dongle without going via your home wifi ... you just need to cast to the dongle rather than go via any external wifi. Hope that helps, Mark

Hi, MODELLERMARK, last night I connected all the pieces and followed your instructions ... everything perfect !! He connected immediately and I saw the mobile phone on the Eachive EV800D display, so congratulations! However, the resolution of the viewer is low, I have done several tests, but it remains low and does not let you enjoy the video. Do you have any suggestions? Are there any APPs that increase the resolution of the viewer? On the mobile the image is perfect ... Thanks so much
@modellermark2
@modellermark2 3 года назад
The cast dongle / HDMI converter should automaticlly adjust to the resolution of the display - I don't think there are any settings on teh devices, although if you are using the HDMI2AV converter they have a PAL /NTSC switch and that can make a difference so try both. If not then see if you can adjust the resolution of your goggles which should make the rest of the components match. Let me know how you get on.

Hello Mark and thanks for this video instruction course. With this wireless WiFi link to the fpv goggles, and the tablet computer eliminated entirely, is there any loss of range with this setup you have devised ? Being new to RC flying in general, I am also unsure as to whether the wireless connected goggles connect to the transmitter used to fly the drone, or to the drone itself. In other words, if I send my old-school Phantom 3 Standard aloft while wearing FPV goggles connected via Wifi using this method, would I be seeing the video feed directly from the flying drone, or would I see the DJI Go or Litchi OSD screen that normally appears if a tablet is used ?
@modellermark2
@modellermark2 4 года назад
What this does is cast your phone via the dongle and converter to your goggles. So you see the screen of your phone in your goggles and whatever is on it. You could even watch RU-vid or a movie in your goggles if you play that on your phone, with audio too if you plug your earphones in. So the connection only goes from your phone to the dongle, just a few inches or so, meaning there is no range implications. Hope that makes sense?
@riverbankfisher
@riverbankfisher 4 года назад
@@modellermark2 Fantastic. I now better understand the very short wifi link between the phone that is still used with the setup, and the goggles, thus eliminating the need for a sun shade to make the phone screen easier to see outdoors on sunny days. I do have an Apple Ipad that I originally intended to use for with my Phantom 3 Standard, but I like this goggles Idea so much I now intend to buy the required items for this ingenious setup you devised, to connect a regular Android phone via wifi, to a pair of Fat Shark Scout goggles already ordered a while back. One last question I must ask, since I don't have access to a 3D printing facility during this current global lock-down, is whether you might be aware of anyone online that sells that belt clip you designed, already fabricated. Not a deal breaker if not available, since I can easily rig something up. Thank you very much for this brilliant idea sir, and for your clarifying response to my initial question.

@@modellermark2 My delivery address is in New York City, but I would gladly cover the cost of a small air freight package from the UK. To provide my PayPal address, I was thinking there might be a PM facility within the RC Groups forum where I also have membership , wherein I could I could get in touch, provided that prepaid overseas mailing would be acceptable from your standpoint. I really like this idea, and ordered the four needed components as soon as I viewed the video clip. As I mentioned earlier, I do have an Apple Ipad originally intended for use flying my Phantom 3, but the added weight of the Argtek antenna mod on the transmitter, combined with that of a 10 .2 inch ipad, would have been cumbersome , hence my appreciation for this simple, lightweight and minimalist approach you have created.

The miracast is first on my list - your phone casts to that - the wifi part is part of the miracast dongle that I have -which is the Gearbest one but I think they are all similar. @@jhonb6768 If you have a chromecast and you can cast your phone to it ... and it outputs via HDMI ... then you will be fine. I did all the setup in my video plus a full flight plus, following your question I just left it running a cast from my phone to my goggles for an hour and it is still on the first paw! So I would think you would get at least 4 or 5 hours from the pack easily enough. Again a plus compared to a tablet I would have thought. Hope that helps

If it has both video input ports availabl ethen you can choose which one to use. If you use the mini HDMI then you don't need the HDMI2AV converter and can use a female HDMI to mini HDMI or you can use my full setup and use the AV port. I would go with the HDMI as you will reduce potential lag by eliminating the HDMI2AV converter. My 3D print may not work for you though without a little adaption.

These drones are tied by video transmission to the App and so on your phone - they do stream it but you would need to intercept that stream and feed it to your goggles so would still need something. This is really cheap and easy with decent results.

@modellermark2
@modellermark2 2 года назад
@@nerassurdo In a way yes, but also ecause they transmit using different frequencies. The drones you build yourself use a standard set of frequencies for FPV and goggles are made to receive those frequencies. The "phone drones" use different frequencies so you cannot pick the signal up on normal FPV goggles - it is also often part of a stream that can need authentication due to its protocol. If you had goggles that used the same frequency and protocol they would work I guess but I doubt anyone would make a set that could talk to every make of drone.
