AFAIK, Oko was in the main set, and Jace was in the big score. Since Big Score was cut, Jace was moved to the main set.

Those 63 planeswalkers was a bit skewed from War of the Spark with those 36 planeswalkers. My opinion on planeswalkers (and other legendary things in general) is "if it's part of the story and is an important character/important object/location then it's fine. But too often there are extra legendary characters that don't have enough of an impact on the story to deserve a card slot.

My two cents? They are leaning heavy on commander. Outside of super friends, planeswalkers don't seem to be played often in my LGS. So it gives them more design space for something that would be popular and potentially drive up sales.

I don't count flip walkers as planes walkers. For the same reason, I don't count Growing Rites of Itlimoc as a land

Jace was going to be part of the BIG score, they just made him part of the main set. I think the 1 planeswalker rule I think is just for standard sets. 2019 was war of the spark. I would omit that set from your stats.

There seems to be no "happy medium" with WotC. They're either all in or all out. They leaned too hard into planeswalkers, now it's legendary creatures. That wouldn't be so bad were the legendaries unique. "Here are a ton of options for commander." Ok, but what's different about them? While I get the "too many" argument, having 3 of a character in one year thing is down to poor design/writing. It can also be applied to legendary creatures. Either way, there should be good choices in both card types. One doesn't have to suffer so the other can "thrive".

Maro meant 1 per standard set, Jace is included in OTJ as Big Score subset, so if the initial plan to release it as an epilogue set had gone through, then the trend would have stayed the same. Premium sets were not clarified in the same way, and when they revealed the Ajani flip walker they specifically said they wanted to tell the backstory of some walkers the same way they did in Origins with the gatewatch.

I say planeswalkers aren’t inherently an issue for me. Have few or many, I don’t care, so long as they actually do something powerful to warrant their mythic rarity. What I don’t like is all the legendary creatures! I know they said that they would reduce their number in core story sets, but it honestly feels like that was a lie.

Keep in mind the general increase in card printing. I want to see the % of a years cards being walkers. That would lead to better talks

If there are 5 in modern horizons 3 based off of the fact that they are transforming they might be pulling a Gatewatch where they are exploring the Backstory of characters they either want to use or that are decreased

I agree that one planeswalker per set may make gameplay better. Their mechanics design and lore may also benefit in terms of making them feel more meaningful or special.

Besides a few exceptions and Superfriends I don't really see many planeswalkers in EDH there are so many OP creatures now that can hit the board with immediate effect that take up deck space.

I dont mind if a second planesalker shows up every now znd then. Just dont overdo it lioe some sets had a tendency to do

I never understood the playerbases hate and disdain for planeswalkers. I started playing magic shortly after New Phyrexia during that years core set. My first mythic I pulled from a starter box was Lillianna Vess and it was the coolest thing that there was a card that acted differently than the others and had these cool abilities I could work towards as objectives. To this day I love all planeswalkers, I actively encourage their use and try to find a way to add them in any deck I play. Since the days of old wizards has printed some great removal and tools for dealing with planeswalkers. Everytime there's new walkers I see multiple "wizards wtf" posts as if people expect wizards to never print the card type again as if the card type is a 10 on the Storm Scale. Please for the sake of us who love the card type just stop, wizards is never going to stop printing the cards so please just get used to them existing and stop whining everytime a new planeswalker is printed. No they aren't going to print some crappy walker like 5mana 3pips 2 colorless +1 scry and draw, - 3 draw 2 discard 1 and -5 destroy target creature 3 starting loyalty. This is overly underpowered to the point of useless, wizards will not print trash like this unless it's a common. Planeswalkers will be powerful, we will get them every cycle if not more than 1 and it's part of the world now. You've had 10 years to get used to the card type it's time to move on.

That peak in planeswalkers is probably because war of sparks which was one of the first sets, to my knowledge, to have so many planeswalkers and uncommon planeswalkers. IMO It kinda made having a planeswalker not as much fun to flood the game with planeswalkers.

I'm fine with less planeswalker if it actually allowed more effective creativity and fun designs but I haven't been impressed by them so far

I don't buy the complexity argument for not printing planeswalkers when so many cards have a ridiculous amount of text. I can't even tell what some of them do without taking them out of the sleeve 😂😂

I thought Jace was originally for OTJ Aftermath

I get the feeling that wotc is going to lean heavily into the universes beyond stuff in the near future, at least for commander (which is where the money is at currently in mtg). Thats why they've excluded the UB stuff from the less legendary creatures promise. After all of there are bevy of iconic characters from a given verse they're working with, why not print legendary cards for all of them to male as much bank as possible while theybhacw the rights to the IP?

There was three Plainswalkers, 2 in the main set and the Oko reprint in the breaking news slot.

These are my two cents: 1. I am so tired of hearing people complain about planeswalkers. I honestly think they're fun, interactive and add a lot of diversity to games. They all do vastly different things or help archetypes grow steadily without it depending exclusively on creatures. 2. I want more planeswalkers, at least 15 per year or so. 3. They should stop making intentionally bulk rares and mythics that do nothing and instead focus on things that provide more interaction and support to growing issues with the game.

I would say flip Planeswalkers wouldn’t really classify as Planeswalkers. I’d say the ones that are just Planeswalkers and only that.

I'm just upset about how they handled the whole "Everyone lost their spark, but not really, but there aren't planewalker, but everyone is a planewalker" and now as a result many of my favorite characters have been chalked. But of course, Jace the Golden Boy, must remain.

I can go into game night upon game night without seeing a single walker being played. They are irrelevant to most players and honestly I hope battles dont come back too.

Idk Planeswalkers are a huge part of mtg, if someone is complaining about the amount of plainswalkers there are in MTG then like ur probably playing the wrong game. I feel they should release as many of the cards they want to restricted or not.

Those War of the Spark "fake planeswalkers" don't really count and were a waste of design space.

Anyone trying to split hairs with the canceled "Aftermath" set is just enabling Wizards usual BS. It's no excuse to constantly misspeak. If you wanna add more to the fire then look at Bloomburrow that has both (fox) Jace and (otter) Ral I don't even know why they bother with the card type anymore after the massive vacation so many characters are taking to Thunder Junction alone. Balance the multiverse like shitz is more like it

Have you seen how many words modern Legendaries have? They have Yugioh lite levels of words; planeswalkers going down is fine, trading it for Legendaries for YEARS a set is not.
