Have The Doctors done an episode on people dying from pharmaceutical medications? Given that it's a leading cause of death in the United States, that would be a great episode.

I've never heard of someone getting a donor that fast and being number 1 on the donor list the same week they found out that they need a liver.

EDIT: Did some digging and found out it's a "$50 supplement from Alani Nu which narrows it down to their Balance Powder and Super Greens powder. Looking at the ingredients the Balance Powder powder has 120 mcg of chromium O.O. Chromium is a mineral and has adverse effects when taken in large doses (liver dysfunction is one the listed symptoms). The standard recommendation is 29 mcg for women. Why a supplement company decided to give 4 time the recommended daily allowance of a mineral that can be toxic in high doses is beyond me but it's the first time I've run across a supplement company promoting absolutely insane levels of a mineral/vitamin that is toxic at high doses. Pretty sure she was megadosing with Vitamin A. It's a common medicine for acne. Although usually it requires a prescription and has to be done under the supervision of a doctor for this exact reason; it has a bunch of nasty side effects, some people try to go the cheap way and just megadose with vitamin A (it's highly discouraged by doctors and not because they want to make a buck).

I was really taken aback that they didn't discuss the type of supplement she was taking, even if they didn't want to mention the brand name. However, I'm glad they discussed informing your doctor of all supplements prior to surgery.

It's amazing how fast she got an transplant when I had family members who died waiting for a transplant.

This begs the question of why they mentions supplements and don't determine which one. Tylenol is the leading and very well known cause of liver failure in the United States.

Why automatically blame a supplement? You didn't state what it was that she was taking in the first place, which is suspicious. What else may she have taken; for example, a prescribed antibiotic, which may in fact cause acute liver failure in some people, or even something as easily obtained as Tylenol, aspirin, etc.? True, the warning to be mindful of which supplements you take, and to let your doctor know what you're taking; especially prior to surgical procedures, is appropriate. Though I don't think it is fair to automatically blame some supplement, which you never disclosed, and fear monger like this. I think that doctors need to start admitting to their patients that indeed, their prescribed medications, whatever they may be, can and do cause serious, even fatal reactions in people. Don't make fools of your patients, and tell them that they're essentially crazy, when they come in with very real, serious reactions to a prescription. I'm one person that this has happened to, and the medical provider literally said to my face that, "the drug wouldn't do that!" Luckily, my father, who was a very good medical doctor, confirmed that it WAS the prescribed drug at fault, and told me to immediately stop taking it upon seeing the reaction that it was inflicting upon my body. Sadly, I could trust my father, whom was a good, caring doctor, but I can't trust the majority of doctors I've seen in recent years. They don't seem to care one iota, are smug, and refuse to listen to patient complaints. I'm truly disgusted.

One would expect a panel of Dr.'s to handle something like this more responsibly. To alert the public only to leave them in the dark seems outright asinine. SMH.

She most likely was taking other medications in addition to the supplement , and/or abused the supplement doseage in addition. The very fact that they do not mention the supplement name, shows me that it is not dangerous under normal circumstances. These doctors know very little about nutrition .

This sort of thing happens when someone takes far more than the recommended dose of a supplement. I wonder if the reason this lady doesn’t mention what supplement it is,might be perhaps because she took too much . I have met people who take double the dose recommended for a supplement especially if it’s s a skin treatment or weight loss supplement. So this question is did you take too much?

What they don’t say is that ibuprofen and such causes liver failure in a lot of cases- so- not a supplement but an over the counter drug.

I almost was in her shoes. I had done a over the counter body flushing and a weight management over the counter and woman's multivitamin and vegan protein and collagen powder and I got very sick and had blood work done and found my liver enzymes were extremely high and I stopped everything just in time. I do have a fatty liver now and doctors are trying to figure out what in the otc stuff I took made me so sick. I never had any medical issues until after the cvd, 19 shot, they think possibly it just made everything to much for my liver. I have to have blood work done every 3 months to keep an eye on my levels.

It's amazing to me how people like this AND this show want to blame the supplements but don't talk about their irresponsibility taking it incorrectly OR doing research before putting something unknown in their bodies 🙄

Glad to see Emily has recovered!!! Supplements are are just that, a alternative way to get the nutrients (vita and mins) your body needs. Whole foods first then sups if you have to, do your research not all are the same (i.e. synthetic vs natural) and certain nutrients are keys/catalyst that allow other to be released into the body (i.e. vitamin D3 (hormone) and magnesium).

On the flip side doctors should say “are you on any medications OR supplements?” A lot of unsuspecting everyday people are not going to think of supplements as medications so they will day no.

If they cant tell us which ingredient in the supplement that caused the liver damage bec they are testing it right now then can u at least tell us what supplement she took so we know which one to watch out for so it does not happen again to someone else also. She likely listened to her Doctor Who doesn’t know much about nutrition, but this is usually the effect of a synthetic vitamin which is the predominant store-bought vitamin. It’s not actually a vitamin if you can’t absorb it, so you need to get plant based and not cheap store vitamins. And yes my medical doctor didn’t know the difference

Only liver reaction Ive ever had wasnt from supplements but from a prescribed medication. I took ONE tablet went to bed and woke up yellow. My LFT's were through roof. Apparently it was a 1 in 10000 chance of reaction to Chlorpromazine.

Supplements can interact with prescription medications. Some supplemental vitamins are water soluble and others are fat soluble. The vitamins that can accumulate can cause complications if taken in large amounts. Important to always have your blood work monitored when taking a prescription or vitamin supplement.

I'm curious to know where they get the liver from or who they unalived

I went through a similar liver failure in February 2020 when I was 39 years old.. Mine wasn't from taking supplements. But my liver failed extremely fast. I was airlifted from my local hospital to one in Philadelphia where I was immediately placed on the top of the list to find a donor. They were able to find me a donor liver within a few days, which was extremely rare, but just before going into surgery I was told it failed the testing and the odds of finding a 2nd liver that would match in time to save my life was very low... I was 2-3 days from death, I was already on oxygen, had a pikline directly into my heart, was placed on dialysis, and had accepted my fate that night and fell to sleep. I didn't remember anything until I woke up in a plastic bubble on a ventalator with my wrist taped to my hospital bed rails... Somehow, I was lucky enough to have gotten a 2nd donor offer, which saved my life in the very last hours I had left to live.. this was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through. and I had NO choice but to go through it all alone with no family or friends around me during the covid 19 lock downs. I was so scared and confused 😢.. I was hallucinating that the hospital and the United States had been taken over by the Chinese and nazi's.. I had had complications getting of life support ventilator and was revetlated after I was taken of the first time. I lost my ability to stand on my own and had to rebuild muscles in my legs so I could walk again.. It was a lot... but I am so grateful to the families who lost there loved ones. And I often feel survivors regret and wonder why I survived when I feel there so many more deserving than me. I am grateful to be alive. I'm just still struggling to figure out how and why..

When the dr mentioned about trying to treat her patients in a natural way and not prescribe medications at 3:45 you see the other drs face when the camera panned over to him. Most drs don’t want to hear that. After that the older dr kind of cut her off and said how bad supplements can be. They want patients on meds because they need to buy that new boat🙄

How can the doctors determine that it was "drug induced" if they haven't identified the drug responsible? That's like saying "The victim was murdered, even though we didn't find any wounds and have no idea what weapon was used. But it's definitely murder!" Color me skeptical...

Telling your doctor what supplements you're on wont solve anything. Doctors rarely know anything. They follow the standards and on top of that even if they knew it comes down to if its a fake supplement, what brand, what form. No one knows, its too big of a pool for anyone to be informed.

What I don't understand is I've never met a doctor that actually looked at all my meds and supplements to make sure that all of them were fine together lol (been put on meds so many times that interacted with my other supplements or meds like wtf they were playin like they were trying to kill me lmao). And they never checked if I genetically would react negatively to meds (which shocker I do have genetic predispositions that cause me to react negatively to meds lol). So the whole, "talk to your doctor" thing is hilarious to me. Just look it up online lol. You can get straight answers super fast by just googling drug interactions. Make sure it isn't just a quick google search though since it's important to get the whole picture and also do some genetic testing to see what meds would work best for you and which others wouldn't. They offer some DNA tests online for specifically that. And one more thing, talk to a pharmacist if you want to talk to someone who actually knows anything about pharmaceuticals lol. Talking to a doctor about pharmaceuticals is hilarious honestly... they are heavily influenced by pharmaceutical companies to prescribe meds. Pharmacists typically don't have the same incentives to push pills down your throat. In fact their incentive is much more to help than a doctors is. I trust pharmacists so much more than medical docs and psychiatrists when it comes to understanding medications more thoroughly.

You have to consult with your Doctor about the medications you are taking. Because that could of been the issue or either taking too much supplement. Too much of anything is harmful.

Many things go into this I am amazed that you did not ask better questions ! Was it meds Was it energy drinks, previous surgery? Accutane for her acne? Which taken at a high level can cause serious problems. Also allergic reactions ? But besides this, I am she that she is alive! What a Blessing.

Because I was dealing with really bad acne and was taking vitamin D, E, A and zinc to clear my acne, my guess is that because she was taking supplements it could have been these. What I can say is that I was taking them all at the same time and when I did I was feeling a little bit disoriented so I stopped them for a few days and then just spread them out throughout the day, then I would take them every other day. I guess my thought was that doing it this way would give my liver time to excrete the supplements and not cause issues. And then I was fine. I would not recommend taking it the way I start it I would spread them out throughout the day even every other day. I was also taking vitamin C. Which should have not cause any issues but again I spread out all of them. My acne cleared btw.

This happened to me.i took a supplement for building muscle legal .I got rushed to hospital had exute liver failure .2 weeks later my liver was functioning normal again .doctors were shocked by my recovery .

Yes!! Glad to hear this being addressed! You need to know the ins and outs of what you are taking and definitely let you HCP know what you are on. They aren’t always (sometimes though) trying to discourage you from taking your health into your own hands. But if you do, make sure you know what you are doing and know the signs that your body is not doing well on them. Work WITH a good provider if (big if) you aren’t one to research extensively how all these supplements work. 👍👍
