I did a swim-with-sharks tour at that exact same location a couple of years ago….yikes! I did it specifically because I’m terrified of sharks. But I did a ton of research before I went and learned that shark attacks there are VERY rare in the Galapagos because food is abundant. Now I’d sure think twice about doing that again!

No snorkeling/diving for me... I used to swim hundreds of yards out on the North Carolina coast line as a younger man... till one day a 15 foot Mako shark was caught off the pier I swam by... never again did I go in past my waist... being attacked or eaten by a shark is not how I want to die...
@lydiamcpherson7925

I was bumped twice while in the water in North Carolina. I got out of the water after the second bump. I'm sure it was a shark. The water was murky and I was in neck deep water. After seeing two predations on video, I'm done going into the ocean.

She is lucky in that it was not a predatory attack. Yes, I would snorkel in the Galapagos Islands provided there were other swimmers in the water. Swimming in a group is probably the safest way to do it considering you have many more people monitoring the surrounding area. Less likely for a Tiger shark to swim up and bite you. Having a speargun available would also be handy just in case you needed to fend off a predator.
@dubstepforever99
@dubstepforever99 Год назад
what would most likely happen though is that people would panic and swim away from eachother and the swimmer at the back of the pack would get attacked

I have snorkeled in the Galapagos. I highly recommend it. Absolutely gorgeous. If a shark appears, everyone get in a tight circle group with arms locked back to back. Sharks aren’t going to attack a large group. They want that one person that has screwed up and finds them self away from the group.

Wow, she is lucky. That sized Tiger shark could have easily come back and made her a meal. (see Popov attack 2023) Tiger sharks are so strange how one minute they seem like methodical eaters and then the next they do a bite and release. Massive damage, but you can clearly see no flesh was removed and the shark just spat out her leg and moved on to something else. Edit: I can clearly see a Tiger shark tooth imprint @2:02 where it probably sank into her flesh while the shark was spitting her knee out. I think it was lucky she was hit in the boniest area of the leg as the shark just decided "Nah, too little meat....definitely not a turtle."

WOW. I can't believe that she didn't feel any pain with that severe of a bite. I know that she probably didn't feel any at first. Seems like alot of shark bite victims say that all they felt at first was a lot of pressure. Whew. But her leg looks like it's moving in like 3 or 4 places and not just one at the knee. Ewwwww. Gives me chills. Oh, and hell no I don't want to swim at Galapagos. I have not and will not swim in water that I can't see through. And that includes the deep end of some pools. Some of them are really dark if they're really deep. If it ain't sharks then it's gators and snakes. I like life. Thank you for the video. I'm glad you showed her leg after her surgery. I know, but I'm just morbid like that. Can't help myself.

Wow, that Lady was sooo lucky not to lose her leg! Tiger Sharks, like the Bull Shark, can be relentlessly quick repeat attackers. I used to be a scuba diver living in Southern California. My dive partner and I encountered a Great White while diving at Catalina Island; it was good size and capable of completely wrecking one's life. We ended that dive quickly. It made a few passes checking us out. Of course, we both had received extensive shark defense training and had Co2 guns, spears, knives, etc., but if they want you, you must put up a very serious fight and pray for some luck! About 2-3 months later, our Shark Defense Instructor was attacked and killed (100% eaten) by Great Whites off Guadalupe Island off the coast of Baja Mexico. He, along with other Professional Divers were filming night diving with Nat'l. Geograhic in tow. Well, the Shark Instructor was a bit of a showoff & decided to be first in the water (it was dusk); before checking the water, and/or dropping the dive lights into the water to see what was going on below the surface, he jumped in. No one knew there were feeding sharks down there, and he instantly became dinner. People on the boat made every attempt to save him, except for going into the water. They were Large Sharks! Anyone else entering the water would've suffered the same fate. This occured in the mid 1970's; I've done considerable research to gather more info on this incident, but apparently the situation was quashed probably by Nat'l. Geo. It NEVER made the papers/news. Poor Guy! He broke his own rules & did not live to tell his story. RIP Randy. 😢

P.P.S. they were Great Whites that attacked the Shark Diving Instructor. Some people on the boat also reported a couple of very large Tiger Sharks. Who knows, at that point, sharks are sharks and you do NOT want to be in the water with them! This was mid 1970's, and much more has been learned about various types of sharks since then. One thing for sure, the waters around Guadalupe Island ARE shark infested with very large maneaters. Would I ever go diving again in any of these locations? NOPE, NADA, NEVER! I know whats below the surface of the ocean, and sh*t does happen when you least expect it!

Snorkeling in known shark infested waters is for neophytes and doesn't make sense. At least give yourself a better chance with a SCUBA diving outfit. You have a better chance of seeing, evading and smashing the shark in gills or nose with a divers knife.

I luv Sharks also especially Bulls, Tigers, Caribbean Reef Sharks, Oceanic White-Tips, and I think the Bronze Whaler is rad though we don’t find them in SoFLo. Silky’s are rad too. Everyone of those Sharks I named can make your nightmares come true in the wrong place at the right time and so I am completely happy observing from boat and using underwater camera’s when I want. No way would I ever snorkel with these Sharks especially those Tigers as you are going to be near the surface the entire time so that you do not have far to go to obtain a breath of air. Even with a trident in hand I still would not unless I have someone in the water with me watching my back, but even that I’m not completely ever sold on. I have enough problems with medical injuries due to the military etc and I just do not need anymore in my life. The chance of getting tagged by one of these kickass fish beasts is more capable once you try snorkeling with em and I know there are plenty who do. Just not this guy. It’s unreal the video that was caught of the Tiger eating that poor Russian man and that is EXACTLY what they will do when talking of Tigers especially. There is no mistaken identity BS when one of them nail you. Their stomachs and digestive systems are insane and they will EAT ANYTHING ha trust that. I love Sharks and always want them protected when needed, but I love my life more and understand no matter how great of a swimmer I may be it does not matter once you are in their alien world that they are designed to thrive in and move through like torpedos. 🤘🦈🤘🏴‍☠️

I wish people would stop going on shark tours, then getting shocked or surprised that they've been bitten ?!?!? LEAVE THE SHARKS ALONE ! In Florida, there is a warning sign, to Not Molest the gators. Maybe they need to do that for known shark areas, to leave the sharks alone! Same on land with the poor animals in the national parks and idiots wanting selfless with a bison, bear, deer, or baby of a wild animal ??? What makes someone think this is a great idea ? Bird watching is much different than what these people are doing. I guess, until some one is killed and they can punish an animal for it, nothing will change. Most have just been warnings to just back off and be left alone. Why don't people ever get that? Not even with each other- when enough is enough ?

that is why I always have a Diving mask flippers and a knife with me when I swim in the middle of the ocean I have encountered 2 huge tiger sharks and 3 great whites on long island when diving as long you face them and push them away they eventually go away. I puck the Great Whites by the eyes and left as soon as I did that. The tiger is more annoying and Persistence. but the eye touch works. not to hurt them just let them know I will take your eye out if you don`t go away. eventually, get the message. One thing is to keep looking around you 360 degrees. Especially the great white they ambush prey. Always swim in cristal clear Ocean water not murky.
