Welcome to the new year:
At the start of November 2021 I had been purchasing a number of items from a gentleman called Adrian who had been charged with selling off a large collection after his relative Malcolm had sadly passed away.
I had offered to take a look at three Wrenn locomotives that were non-runners.
When they arrived there were indeed in need of attention.
This video tells some of the history of the locos and lets you see them in action

Thank you for your wonderful videos. I have 2 West Country locos, both were Dorchester, which I purchased in the 70s costing £8 and £13. They still run on my layout and cope with the fine scale peco track. The amazing thing is how well they stand up to the modern equivalent locos, the Wrenn grain wagons with new wheel sets look and perform better than my new Dapol ones

Hi Gary, thank you kindly, ah I have a Dorchester and like yours she run fine as well. Yes Wrenn had it right I think

I watched this video with great interest, a couple of years ago I brought a Hornby Doublo City of London out of our Garage. It was a gift from my father in 1962. I later found out that it was possible it had been made by Wrenn? Although I’m not sure. Anyhow, it had survived 5 house moves and a flood and ran without any major problem. Thanks to you I was also fortunate enough to receive a number of Malcolm’s locomotives, They are all great runners. Thanks again Mike

Hi Neil, many thanks. That City of London sounds nice, do you have a video of it in action? Yes Malcolm kept his locos well and Adrian did a top job getting them to us.

Hello Mike. I'm so glad you were able to get the locos going. We were disappointed they wouldn't move on our little shunter track, so were really pleased they found a home with you. We guessed they must have been special as we found them hidden away in Malcolm's wardrobe. He probably never ran them. You'll be pleased to hear (or maybe not!) we've now finished selling everything. It's taken six months and been a pretty steep learning curve. But we're glad so many people are now enjoying Malcolm's extensive collection. My sister has now converted the former train room into a study with one favourite engine taking pride of place in a display case on the sideboard. Thanks again for your support in showcasing the many items you bought and for your much-needed advice and guidance when we needed it. Happy New Year to you and Cheryl. Caroline

Hi Caroline, thank you for your lovely message. I think you are right, they were almost factory fresh but completely dry and bound up. It had been a total honour to give a good safe home to so much of Malcolm's collection. I think Adrian and yourself did an excellent job selling things off and I can well imagine how hard it was. Again it was my privilege to assist you with this. Kindest regards Mike & Cheryl

Thank you for this. Great to see the City of Stoke-on-Trent which I also own (unboxed though) and which is my oldest and most treasured loco as I received it as a Christmas present when a child - and still runs fine.

These wrenn locomotives are basically just Hornby dublo in a new lease of life! Wrenn, as a rule, even kept the dublo cab side numbers and names of their predecessors, too. I seem to remember that the HD Cardiff Castle set a world record back in the 60s for endurance of over 140 miles non-stop? The ring field motors in these are superb and these locomotives run like miniature Rolls Royces! There is something quite special about them to all of a certain age of model railway enthusiasts I think! I was given a HD city of London that had been in a leaking shed for year's. The box was mouldy and the locomotive was looking in a very poor state! I took it apart serviced it put it on the track and away it went running like new ! I couldn't believe it! And it's got a very weathered look that is natural and I love it I wonder if Hornby could make anything now that would work in those conditions fifty odd years later??

Totally agree and no I don't think they could make anything like them now

What better way to start 2022 than with some lovely Wrenn locomotives? The 08 shunter and Class 20 are particular favourites of mine, in fact I was running in an unused 08 in the very fetching yellow Dunlop livery just before Christmas. What you have to remember about Wrenn is they were aimed primarily at the collector market and most have seen little if any use. Issues are usually related to seized up mechanisms/axles and dried up lubricant, which can easily be resolved with a service, lubrication and careful running in to blow out the cobwebs.

Thanks Paul, sounds lovely the 08. They are wonderful models.

Much too late to show my appreciation Mike, but got very enthusiastic about this video as I am a absolute fan of metal railway models in whatever scale. Whether Dublo, Wrenn, 0 Gauge tinplate or Gauge 1, I just can’t help myself. Even if the model doesn’t have the right number of rivets, or is slightly over-scale, it doesn’t matter, I‘m interested. Nice to see that you have given these models a new lease of life!

Another good video. Something special about Wren locos and stock, missing out of new models, that takes you into the model world. They, run, look, feel and sound proper.... I have two rakes of Wren Pullman’s in Brown/Amber and Blue/White which are great Loved the running session, especially the trains being made up, which you rarely see on other channels. I have a Wren City and a Duchess locos. This may be a sin, but are they easy to convert to DCC to run on my latest new layout, rather than leave them in their boxes or display cabinet.... x The Bigfella x

Thanks very much, I agree fully with you! You hit the nail on the head there, they just feel real. I am glad you enjoy the shunting videos, I wonder if they are a bit slow for some so its good to hear they are appreciated.

hi there, yes Wrenn locos are great. now have 2 N2 steam locos, ex hornby-dublo, easy to look after, i had the class 20 from hornby -dublo in 1962, it was 3 rail with plunger type pick ups, at my age i do not want highly detailed locos just simple ones like a Triang 08 etc, !

Good Evening Mike, hope you had a great Christmas & New Year. Great choice on purchasing those Wrenn Locomotives, they maybe old, but they still run as smooth as a modern model locomotive, after they receive some attention. As you have already have another Wrenn 8F No.8042, how about renumbering it to an 8F that has been preserved? Enjoy running those beauties. Regards Trainzville a.k.a Jordan Shingler

It shows how well made Wrenns were and with maintenance how good they still are. One thing I have always wondered is how you made your Trackbeds. They look more like real ones than any I have seen on other layouts. What did you use to raise them from the board and maintain quiet operating please.
