I always enjoyed his work, but Frusciante fits so well in this band. He defines RHCP. Dave is by far the guy you'd want to call when Frusciante isn't playing.
Ikr I like Daves playing in One Hot Minute more than Joshs playing in Im With You and The Getaway. How about you? Edit. Kinda off railing from your comment Editedit. Glad we got Master back to his family! :)
@@snc9297 I was re-listening to one hot minute a few months back, and was surprised that it sounded better than I remember. It's a great record, I maybe only skipped one song. It would've been cool to have one more record with Dave
I was there, front and center at the stage, naked except for combat boots and covered in mud. I had been discharged from the Army earlier that week, and this was my reintroduction into civilization. The RHCP set was incredible. Dave threw his guitar into the crowd at the end of Higher Ground and two guys came very close to killing each other over it. At the end of their set I turned around and walked straight out through that massive sea of people. One of my most unforgettable concert memories for sure.
That is such an epic story man. I have had one of those concerts too when I was travelling in Brazil in 2008. The festival was running so late that the final band (The Killers) ended up doing their encore as the sun was rising above the stage. Just an absolutely incredible spectacle and vibe that I will never ever forget or probably feel again.
Awesome man! I had an ex girlfriend that was in that pit as well. She said it was the most unforgettable moment of her life. An ocean of human beings she said
Yes dude, Totally ! It's mind blowing how great this is... I'd go as far as to say its one of the best performances in the history of Rock n Roll and music in general.
@@lamborghinihockey I’ve literally got Slane Castle on DVD at home. I definitely think they swapped young energy on stage featured here for better music later in their careers, so in terms of a live act for energy, this is above slane castle for me, where as slane castle you get more of a better overall musical performance
@@Grandizer8989 Dave relapsed in like 97 so the band grew apart/frustrated by that and then John got clean. The band, flea especially, really loved John so Dave and them just kinda went separate ways. I don't THINK it was on *super* bad terms or anything. I liked Dave's contributions while Frusciante was dealing with his junk more than a lot of people, but I do think John is the better fit for RHCP.
Also guys I recall two quotes from the time: One was Flea "The Red Hot Chili Peppers is a funk band. Anyone who can play funk can play in the Red Hot Chili Peppers" At the same time Dave said "I don't like Funk, I can't relate to it. It makes me feel stupid. I can't relate to music that makes me feel stupid". I thought Damn, you ain't it. then. Come back John!!!
I'm a 45 year old man who has listened to the RHCP throughout their careers, I still think One Hot Minute is one of their best albums. I know it's my favorite.
Dave Navarro was a boss. He stepped up to the fucking plate and kept that band alive when they should’ve been over - without him there wouldn’t have even been a band for John to return to. He played John’s and Hilel’s songs faithfully with conviction and without complaint, he contributed his own stuff when needed, and he still stayed his own man. Although John won’t play OHM tracks, I certainly believe he respects and appreciates Dave’s efforts.
I saw original Lollapalooza in '91 when Jane's headlined with Ice Cube(a pairing like that NEVER happened previously). If anyone had the video of Dave playing "had a dad" at waterloo village , NJ, I'd pay $$ for it. Best set I've ever seen.
John hates everything what's not his. The band even dropped all songs made with Josh and John cut all contacts with him. I know man is a genius but that seems like a dick'ish behaviour
It sure was. It started out with Nirvana burning down the glitter house and paved way for a dark, but real underground that was just waiting to explode.
Frusciante is one of my favorites guitarists, songwriters, artists in this world…… then Dave Navarro comes along. Saw him with Jane's - instantly knew I was amidst greatness; his poise, his attitude, his note placement, his persona, his raw attack of the instrument - so clean, so funky, so heavy.
@@frankdux3605 that comment is pure retardation. They have different styles to be sure, but John isn't on some higher level. John Frusciante nut huggers are more annoying than crossfitters.
Best performance by Dave, 5 years ago this comment section would of been filled with people talking about how bad Dave is. Nice to see people are starting to appreciate his time there
@@marklewen9384 True, I didn't think about that. But I mean, is anyone going to really argue and say Nevermind dudnt have a huuuuge impact on the transition away from hair metal?
It truly was the last of the greatest decades. Before people were overly anxious and distracted by the Internet, and everyone generally seemed friendlier with one another. I hate what smartphones and social media have done to our civilization.
I love how Chad literally only gets in three or four hits (hi-hat and kick) before the crowd loses it. Also, his drum tone is phenomenal! BSSM has the best drum tone of any of their albums, in my opinion.
@@johnzackarias11 let me try and find it! It’s on RU-vid, might even be on the full Woodstock 94 video/disc. Lemme try and find it and I’ll paste a link!
My personal opinion is that Daves guitar playing was at its peak during these peppers years! so many awesome improvised blazing solos that are just truly brilliant and cool. He did Johns songs justice but added his little bits of magic to them. Massively under appreciated by a lot of chili’s fans, but not me, I love Janes and so welcomed his place in the band.
I love how Dave and John play, one hot minute is a unique album full of energy. Jane's addiction as an alternative band was on another level. Geniuses do not have to be compared, they have to be admired.
I turned 20 in 1990 but if could have chosen, I would have been born 10 years later just to be a teenager in the 90s. The 80s was fun too but people were just so obsessed with money and status for the most part of that decade.
I couldn't guess when Dave was going to do pinches, and when I did I was wrong. His flow was truly unique, the drop that he does along with the extra harmonics PLUS THE RANDOM PINCHES. Homie deserves more than RHCP respect.
Amazing to see the polarised opinions about John and Dave (and Flea) on here! For what it's worth, I love Dave's playing here. One of my fave live versions of any of their tracks. Anthony's vocals are absolutely on point too.
Me too! Me and two of my college friends and one 6 man old, heavy as shit, canvas tent that was full of mud by the end. One of the best times of my life!
It was raw(cold) though..great time, but by Sunday I think everyone was ready to go due to weather. I remember when we got there, JAMES was one stage. 1st of MANY great sets that week end...
Navarro is a fucking monster here, actually he was a fucking monster all over ONE HOT MIN, one of their fucking best imo, yea i know a lot of john purists are rolling their eyes, but for me honestly When John came back thats when we got Chills light. The sound the had with Navarro had they played together and made some more records, it would have been fucking epic......
@@rafaxmeg that's what I loved about it ..dark funk is what I called it lol...I love John but his headspace imo made the chilli light after he came back , I still love Californiacation , but nothing hit me after that record , minus the odd song here and there ..
The point is that Dave is rock guitarist, first of all, and he was pulling the sound into rock side, though RHCP always wanted to be the funk band and that`s why they parted their ways.
I've been watching this video for many nights in a row already and I still cant get over how amazing Dave sounds! This is the best version of this song I can find.
Dave absolutely nails it… I didn’t want to like him at the time, but in hindsight I have to say he plays it like a session pro, great tone, mega tight.
I was working at a major retail music store in Western Michigan at the time of Woodstock 94. There was a girl a few years younger than me working there who always had RHCP buttons on her work vest. One day I noticed she seemed upset. I asked her what was wrong. She said she had asked for the next weekend off a very long time back but now they're saying they need her to work because some employees had left and they wouldn't have anyone trained in time. I asked her why she had asked for it off so long ago and she said it was Woodstock. I was like, ok, it should be a cool concert, but why was she so upset? She said, well because my brother's band is headlining. I'm like...who's your brother...and she's like Anthony Kiedis. I look at her and I'm like OMFG she looks SO much like him (I think they were half siblings.) Suffice to say, she quit, most likely went to the concert, and I never saw her again. Sometimes the world is a small place.
I always liked Dave Navarro and find OHM underrated. Its an own piece of art in its own way withe a very distinct vibe thats at the same time RHCP and also very different.
Flea and Dave were meant to play together. The look of astonishment as Dave improvs over his groove at the end; those two were destined to be in a band together.
I love the one hot minute era peppers. Wish they played those songs live still. I’ve never heard of them doing them since Dave left. Except flea occasionally doing “pea”. Makes you wonder if they will play any of the Josh era songs now.
Navarro is an amazing musician, very textured and versatile. He barged into the rhythm section, really pushed Smith and Flea.It was huge loss when he left the band.
Guy never fit in .... Janes Addiction is where he belongs period ..John though is the perfect fit for rhcp.... he brings out the best of Chad, Flea n Anthony He's brings the 🔥
There was a madness in the air that night. Played out around the whole festival. Anthony's voice taken over by the devil in this performance. In fact the whole band was on one trip. More than you believe.
This is awesome, I was at the 99 Woodstock and watched the Peppers play Fire as the place burned down around me. One Hot Minute and BSSM two best albums.
Uplift and Mother’s Milk are killer…This is what I don’t understand about the Navarro haters…He brought back the rock vibe from Uplift and Milk that they needed…One Hot Minute is phenomenal…It’s ok if you disagree you’re just wrong… 🤘😤🤘
it's a f*cking crime that the rhcp dont even play any track of ohm(except aeroplane and pea, i guess). There's tons of great stuf here ,some of it probably their best material yet they refused to play it.
I was 9 in 1991… Southern CA culture was rad Basketball high tops, neon colors, Body Glove, Vision Streetwear…this record epitomizes the look & feel of the era…it doesn’t hurt that Point Break came out that year & Kiedis has his infamous line “…that would be a waste of tyyyme”.… Me now, as a drummer of 20+ yrs, this record is in my top 10 if not 5. It still holds up being a fantastic production & some of the most solid & fun grooves to throw on & play along with. I gravitated to & emulated so much from Chad Smith directly from this album alone when growing up… If you haven’t heard of Funky Monks, check it out - it’s a documentary on the band recording this album & frankly a lovely glimpse back into a simpler time (even for L.A.)
no mobiles, pure joy and entertainment... Gen X, we are the last generation to be raised without internet and mobile phones. pure freedom with great music...
Why is it the same comment over and over on any video pre 2000? “Ugh I miss when I wasn’t 50. This is freedom. I hate phones. I hate new things. I’m scared.”
One Hot Minute is THE album that got me into the Chili Peppers. Warped is a fucking CHOON. Yes, I know its not their best album, but i never understood the hate for it. And Dave was awesome 🤘🏻🔥🎸
