You have a beautiful burl there Lewis and I think a clear AMBER would accentuate what nature has done and not hide it. I'm sure whatever colour you choose will look absolutely stunning.
I read all the other comments and like the idea of a highlight of the deeper areas with a somewhat translucency? Now here's a wild idea - dark interior with a glow in the dark highlights, clear resin pour.
I recently saw a turner paint the inside of the burl with a gold or copper . Then used a translucent amber for the final casting. It gave the whole project a secret cave affect 👍
Ocean blue resin with pearl white mixed in would be pretty that's going to be one nice piece of wood art can't wait to see the end result have a wonderful day. Thanks for sharing your talents with us
Light Gold and purple. Thanks for letting us participate with the pigment colors. Can’t wait to see your finished art piece. It really amazes me how you can turn that burl and see what you are making. Thanks again.
the bluest blue you have is what i’d do. like royal blue, not navy or sky blue. you mix your colors strong so i know it would look great! i hope you try using clear resin someday, or clear mixed with another color. i’ve seen some really great work done that way and i know you would do it justice.
A 3/4 medium/dark green with 1/4 copper swirled throughout. Or a gunmetal grey with blue and silver swirled. Beautiful wood! Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Lewis Enjoyed watching your process on the burl!! I agree that the extra effort is worth the time. As for colour I like blue! Translucent blue with a white pearl mica. No matter the colour, I know you’ll make it a beautiful piece! Appreciate your time and talent. Thanks Tim
Hi from Halifax, NS, Lewis. I’m a big red fan and I think that works well with the cherry wood. So anything in that family- red, maroon, burgundy would look fabulous.
Hey Lewis, great video, my friend! Appreciate you sharing your process for this. I can’t wait to see the finished product. As far as color, how about violet, with streaks of black and silver.
Great to see how you get it ready for the next stage I my self havnt done any reason in any of my wood turning but would love to give it a go . Now I think a metallic orange with a bit of silver but I think what ever you do it will be out standing
Cool idea taking suggestions. I like others think a very translucent color would be appropriate but I’d add a hint of yellow with some white flecks for highlights and interest.
That’s going to be very cool! I will like it no matter what colour you choose, but I’m always partial to shades of blue. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Cheers, Rick
I like the blue idea but I'd go with something the glassblowers use, called Copper Blue. Might take a mix of colours to achieve but a bit of metallic flake after could be spectacular. Love the channel!
CLear - clear - clear. Oil or stain the wood for texture showing, then put into resin for all outer coating. Knurl out the interior and eventually, finishing up the interior with oil or stain, then repour internal clear resin, and finish up final turning of the bowl for final production. Be able to see through the burl and enjoy the wood outside surface and inside surface.
Really enjoyed your skilful tool work. Not sure what colour but I think a light colour would suit such as Turquoise or even bright yellow with red streaks if possible.
Beautiful and thank you for sharing this information as well as all of your instructional content. It is very helpful. As for the burl: there is a lot of orange and yellow in the wood so a darker green mixed with a white or silver swirl would set that off very nicely. Can't wait to watch the rest of the work!
I would suggest that if you put a light shaded oil finish on that you go with a clear or light shaded color to complement the cherry. And if you go the other way so should the resin
Hi Lewis, your Cherry Burl looks amazing, and for that reason I would cast in clear resin. Sorry I know you said what colour and clear isn't a colour, but why hind what nature has done so perfect. But what ever you do, I know it will turn out great. P.S Thank You for giving me many ideas over time watching your channel.
Beautiful even with out the resin. Can not tell if it has the green streaks we get in orchard cherry. If so, a color to go with the streaks would be appropriate. Yukon Gold (Klondike) along with a pearl type color might be a good choice. But I have not found a color that does not look good on cherry. I have stopped using clear and colors that turn ugly as the resin yellows with age.
Really great video! How long did it take you to get all the bark off that piece?? I really appreciate your attention to detail. What brand of vacuum chamber do you use? Where do you get your burls? Thanks for all the effort of making the videos.
Hey Amy! It took about an hour to clean this up. My vacuum chamber is made by BW that I got from LeDab in Canada. I get burls from anywhere I can. Some I cut myself, some from local woodsmen, some from Facebook marketplace or Kijiji. Thanks for the questions and for watching!
Perfect timing and explanations, Lewis! Tomorrow morning I was planning iced coffee on the deck while cleaning out a maple burl from my wife, for my last birthday in October. It doesn't have much for voids, and they are deep. I was concerned about the resin getting into the places I need it, until you wisely said you need it to penetrate only as deep as the final bowl thickness. Now I'm just looking forward to getting that bright orange resin in there. I've wanted to do orange for a long time, and I plan to keep the bowl or hollow form for myself. The blank is kiln dried and I cannot stabilize it. What do you think about, before the resin, a light coat of CA glue in the inclusions to prevent missed dirt or debris from floating or getting into the resin? Any other experiences or advice you could share? TYVM For yours, I'll suggest lighter green dye and yellow mica, expecting a chartreuse result.
Thanks Jay! I’m not sure how resin bonds to CA. I like wood to resin. I would seal the finished piece well so the wood cannot change and expel moisture. Blow out all the dirt that is loose so that isn’t an issue. Thanks for watching!
