Last point - You do hear Schadenfreude in English fairly often, not so much the others, but it’s survival of the fittest/most lacking a word.

In brazillian portuguese we have Saudade, a word that means something similar to "the feeling when you miss someone or wants them to be near you"

9:00 That Finnish one is kinda cheating. It's got an unrealistic number of suffixes. The base word "juoksennella" (the "juoksentel-" part of the word in this case) means "to run around aimlessly." You could argue that the "-ella" bit is also a suffix and the base word is actually "juosta" which means "to run".

@ianslee4765 no we have "extrovertiert" for that, which is the synonym for Extrovert, but "Gesellig" means a more friendly manner, like if a man at a bar would just randomly join in a group of people drinking beer because he heard them taking about something interesting. Its very similiar but its a bit more over the top

@@poggingmilk9452 how is that then different than the term "sociable"? Even here English has a word for "to gather attention before speaking" it's 'ehem'. Aside from Arabic, English has the most words, inflections, and dialects in the entire world. That doesn't mean EVERY word is covered, but it does mean that most, especially those of which English is rooted, are going to have some form of translation

I guess it's pretty likely they come from the same thing then since the French one translate to "the spirit of the staircase" but the word for spirit (esprit) can be used to say you have a sense of humor or you're making a joke so it could be translated as the staircase's joke.

5:50 It's because for a very long time, "The Ukraine" and "The Crimea" were considered entirely geographic terms referring to certain areas (mostly) controlled by Russia, not actual countries. Other similar constructions, some of which are still used as such: "The Middle East", "The Orient", "The Congo", "The Caribbean", "The Midwest", "The Philippines".

That Finnish word is a feature of agglutination, you can do the same with with most words. You just take a word and keep adding suffixes. Like to drink is juoda, then you just morph it to juopottelisinkohankaan. "I wonder if I should not get drunk after all."

​@francoise4678 It's related to Estonian and Hungarian (and list of smaller languages), other than those are probably going to find it somewhat challenging. But adding endless suffixes is just playing around with the language, not something you would actually do.

@@deathracoffee Cooperate is too strong word, they juset used that oppurtuninty and took area which was distuped since 1918. But it's true that before 1939, every neighbor of Czechoslovakia was enemy or not friendly country, Czechoslovakia was only really free and democratic country in region.

I would not literally say they cooperated, they just used oppurtunity to take few villages in disputed area. It clearly shows how Poland was stupid, instead of joining together to beat bigger evil and danger for whole world, they cared about few stupid villages and germany attacked them just few months later.

You can make any word in Swedish a command by adding -s, that's the joke. The conjugation is something like "is to be _'d", which means it's always a complete sentence in a single word. Anyway "gargle" is already Russified "harkle", it's just how the word is relevant to your experience. You gargle, spit, and say thank you for the cultural insertion.

you know whats funny. when that satirical map that shows all the countries that Britain has invaded, you get people saying "when did Britain invade (insert country)" and when they say Russia i say all the places under the Russian empire and the north of Russia that Britain occupied after WW1. according to every Russian ive spoken to, Ukraine, Crimea. Finland, Estonia etc do not count because they aren't Russia.

? Maybe I misunderstood, but Finland, Ukraine, Crimea, Estonia are indicated on the map not because they are "part of Russia" (which it is), but because Britain invaded this territory. On the map, which shows all the British invasions, there is Kazakhstan, but there is no Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, because there were no British on their territory.
