I'd also say the Mogh class exhibits design philosophies from the Starfleet Defiant and Sovereign classes; likely based on Worf's personal experiences on those ships. Most 24th century Klingon ships were ships for tactical battle, but the Mogh and -Samurai- Kurak class are ships for strategic war. Honor and Glory to the house of Mogh. (Haha, that last part at the end about barrels; rivaling only tribbles for being the greatest threat to Klingons).

I think what you said at the end is perfect, a more methodical and professional way of waging war. Just like Worf. The cunning Warrior will always prevail. And while the Klingons may have stagnated a bit, I think Mogh is a wonderful design, a true return to form for a battered Empire. Nicely done.

Not possible kurns mind was wiped forever in ds9 a few episodes after way of the warrior & a family friend call mogra took him as his son so he could live as Klingon with out the dishonor of the moug name when worf opposed Galron in the carrdasian war. & worf still identified himself as of the house of martok in Picard season 3. It’s possible martok pardoned the house and gave it to Alexander for his service in the defense forces in the dominion war or simply gave the ship the name as respect to worf though

The crack about barrels is so great. I like that Worf got a warship and that he basically was like "Hmm the Defiant, a warship with a cloaking device, what if you really designed a ship to make use of that."

One of the things that makes the STO original designs such a wonderful addition to Star Trek lore is the amount of thought and detail that goes into their designs. Even though there isn’t much hard canon on these ships, there is always something to read deeper into. Your interpretation of the Kurak-class’s prow as a sensor array made me think of the “Miracle Worker” arrays on the Gagarin-class. I initially thought of the Gagarin as primarily a warp and slipstream interceptor and pursuit cruiser purpose built for the role the Cheyenne fulfilled in the 24th century. The nacelle design and the cyclical slipstream drive convinced me of this, but your reading of the Kurak as an aggressive reconnaissance vessel made me think of the Gagarin’s affore-mentioned arrays and their similar placement. It might be possible that the Gagarin could also be designed for this aggressive recon role. Thanks for another video and keep up the good work!

Honestly its nice that its recognised that Mogh was an honourable man as were all of Worfs family. Especially given canon has it that Worfs grandfather defended Kirk and McCoy and got a partial win in geting it only to the life sentance when it was meant to be death. Despite the stacking of the deck in the trial. Also an advocate of the accords as im sure Worfs father was. Its quite interesting how that house end up determining a lot of Klingon politics from the late 23rd century onwards despite probably being seen as a bit odd for their value on the human like internal instead of external honour.

So, the Wiki says it has more firepower than the N'egvar, despite being smaller. I would actually believe that, since the Mogh is a much newer ship, that incorporates much newer technology and was designed to incorporate more advanced systems going forwards, while the N'egvar is decades old by the time of STO and was built at a time when Klingon technology was generally lagging behind the Federation, which to me puts a serious cap on how far you can upgrade and modernise it as a platform. It's the difference between trying to upgrade and modernise legacy aircraft, trying to keep pushing a platform from the 60's as far as it'll go, VS building a brand new next generation aircraft, that can do most things that the older aircraft could, but far more efficiently and has new capabilities that the old platform didn't have and could never have, no matter how hard you tried to push it.
@digitalis2977
@digitalis2977 Год назад
In addition to all that, there's the fact that the Negh'Var was built to be as much a weapon of Terror and Intimidation as it was of War; the Big Scary Unknown hanging at the edge of the battle that you didn't want to engage, but also couldn't take your attention away from. While massive in size for its time, with the exception of its siege cannons, it was surprisingly undergunned...a dinosaur of Klingon wing formations and Always-Forward battle doctrine that completely lacked the speed and maneuverability to execute that doctrine.

It's going to be crude and clunky in comparison to Federation ships of its time, where as the Mogh, is incorporating all the newest innovations and Worf's own experiences of Federation starship design, to create something that does everything the Negh'var was and more, but in a lighter, more compact and more efficient platform.

When STO describes something as a "Cruiser" or "Battlecruiser," they are referring to a combination of the Mastery package and what other abilities are available. There are many different classes of ships beyond cruisers. Also, in STO, the Mogh and Kurak are actually modular, though mixing parts from both can lead to wild designs. Mostly, I just use the Mogh skin for the Kurak. Interesting that you classify the nose as a massive sensor, given the Kurak's Intel specialization seating. If it were full spec Intel, that would be even more applicable. Neat video.

size and fire power don't always go hand in hand don't forget the defiant is positively tiny but packs a huge amount of fire power most Star Trek ships have a lot of space dedicated to non combat equipment things like the Avenger, Defiant, Mogh etc are purpose built warships so they are packing more guns and more armor with less other gear getting in the way

Don't forget the warp drive is also the source of power. It's very likely the Mogh will sacrifice speed for power. Would make sense to me that those large warp engines produce enough power to make sure that whilst the Mogh is smaller it should be able to fight head on with bigger ships. Similar to the defiants role, and lets not forget Worf captained the defiant during the Dominion war. To me it explains the classification and fits perfectly with the Klingon psyche, why have big engines to run when you are already smaller and more manoeuverable, why not just cripple the enemy before they can run.

wa'SaD Hegh DaHotDI' DughIj wa' Hegh You feel a thousand deaths by fearing one. Honestly, these ships make sense but not for the reasons given. You could argue the mogh was designed for survival, but I believe it is meant to endure rather than survive. As others have said, even the escape pods could be used offensively. I will give a modicum of credence to 'scan-under-fire', but a rapid response of heavy firepower is far more practical. Instead of waiting for a report from a scout, the quraq captain can respond to an enemy detection personally and with a mogh not far behind, it would be a formidable response indeed. Otherwise, the designs in and of themselves are exceptional. They encourage warriors to learn from their mistakes rather than die by them.

Some of your videos really tempt me to reinstall STO. I find it interesting how STO classifies ships. Is it a cruiser that can mount cannons? Battle Cruiser! Is it a battle cruiser with a hanger? Dreadnought Cruiser! Battle Cruiser with TWO hangers? Dreadnought Carrier! No size/firepower requirements except that. ...It's kinda refreshing if prone to initial confusion over the term compared to ship size.

I used to own the official Star Trek atlas. In that book, which showed all of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant powers at their fullest extent in the 24th century, the Klingon Empire was depicted as enormous. The only other political entity which could be compared to the UFP in sheer scale. There are two details that I've always wondered about which were never explained in any of my old source books. The Klingons oversaw a vast Empire, but it makes me wonder what other species lived there. And why they were seemingly never depicted fighting alongside the Klingons. Was there some sort of caste system that forbade anyone else from fighting for the Klingon Empire, or were the majority of other species simply wiped out and enslaved? Maybe both?
@gusty9053
@gusty9053 Год назад
In some of the books they hint at other species being incorporated into the empire. Especially if they put up a good fight. It's probably more a case of klingons being the most enthusiastic species about fighting so the other species naturally fill the other roles (merchants, scientist, workers etc). And in STO canon at least, they incorporate the gorn, orion, nausicans and "the cat" species into the KDF forces to some degree.

Indeed, they do not even come with the console or trait that the cash store versions do. In the Kurak's case, getting the cash shop version is a really good idea due to the Emergency Weapons Cycle trait.
