Yes, I've been experiencing such situations and I followed this way once; however, the other person thought that's totally okay to vent in the same way again and again and apologise at the end of the day. LoL I say it's about them not me and let it go.

Hi Adriana if I told you my stories at work you would be shocked. The same people I helped, encouraged, trained and even signed off for for their qualifications and even took in nice food for them. The same knes stabbed me in the back or neglected me in my hour of need. And it hurts.

I am a lighting technician for corporate events and I constantly interact with negative people. The first rule you came out with; Be calm, don't take it on is one of the tools I have used without knowing it. Everyone on a jobsite says so and so is a jerk and doesn't know how to communicate. I know some of these individuals and completely agree with their assessment, but my response has been to anyone saying that I haven't had any issues with so and so. I feel like being calm is the reason why. I deal with a TON of project managers and never have any issues.

I agree with everything you said! I used to allow what people did or said to affect me on a personal level but the. I realized that maybe they were going through their own issue and tried to be compassionate. If that didn’t work, I just didn’t pay attention to them and continued to just do my best at work.

Great Adriana. If they are a person who constantly behaves poorly, I will usually separate myself. If not, I give them space and then re-address when they are calm. And like you said, work on the solution and stay out of the personal.

I used to have a fellow staff member come in to take over the night shift and nit pick everything that was happening at the moment as being my failing. I remained calm and addressed each issue. I thought they might get tired of being wrong several times in a row but they never did. So I stayed calm each time and kept addressing the issues, not the personality. If I was wrong, I apologized about that issue and learned for next time.

Awesome topic. I agree people are innately good. Corporate culture really influences how the interactions go at the office. I used to work in the pharmaceutical industry. I was fortunate that I really liked the people I worked with but there were challenges that would pop up from time to time- after I went on a personal growth path I began to understand it was all in the way I would respond to each situation. Happy to be on this path!

I was just in a similar situation 10 mins ago. My colleagie and I were talking on phone about the comments we had made on a google document. And I noticed she was in a mood since the beginning of the call. When she "bombarded", I kept it calm... throughout.. in the end of the phone call I asked her what the issue actually was and how can I help in future. I also cleared that I was not being unreasonable...its just that we both work differently..n its good to talk about things in a repectful way... But it was difficult. I found myself shivering... but NOT anxious... So I came to your channel to look for an advise..n found that most of the things you suggested I had already done Yaaaaay! The question I ask you is: do we keep on being the punchbags for them for any unresolved issues at home? How to prevent this in future?
@AdrianaGirdler
@AdrianaGirdler 4 года назад
Congratulations on handling the situation with calm and grace. It is excellent that you didn’t react. This can be hard to do when we are bombarded. To answer your first question...no, it is never acceptable to be anyone’s punching bag. To answer your second question on how to prevent it....for one off situations the way you handled it was perfect. Sometimes people do have bad days and they take it out on others without realizing it. You can even ask them if they are ok because their behaviour was out of the norm. This compassionate approach can be very powerful for both parties involved. However, If you have a repeat offender then you may have an Human Resource issue as this may be office bullying. Continue to behave the way you did and document the incidents. If they are happening frequently you will need to bring this up to HR as office bullying is never acceptable. Let me know how it goes. I hope this helps...cheers!
