Sylvanas is working with someone in the Shadowlands (the afterlife in WoW) named "The Jailer". The Shadowlands have been broken for a while. When someone dies, their soul is supposed to go to "The Arbiter", who decides which afterlife realm they go to. There's a "Greek heaven" realm, a forest/nature realm, an undead realm (where the Lich King's crown was actually made), a vampire realm for souls that need to be redeemed before they can go somewhere better, and then "The Maw", which is for only the worst souls. No one who goes to the Maw has ever been able to return. There are apparently infinite realms, but we only know about these 5 so far. Lately, however, ALL souls have gone straight to the Maw, whether good or bad. The Jailer rules over the Maw. It's not clear whether he's the reason for the afterlife being broken, or if he's trying to fix it. But what we do know is that Sylvanas burned the World Tree Teldrassil and started the Fourth War in order to kill as many people on both sides as possible. The more souls that go into the Maw, the stronger it becomes, and the stronger the Jailer becomes. The magic of the Maw and the Jailer is how she was able to beat the Lich King. The tower in the sky you see here is "Torghast", the tower of the damned in the Maw. By breaking the crown, Sylvanas just broke the veil between life and death that she mentioned at the beginning. Because of that, we can go to the Shadowlands in the next expansion and try to fix things. So is Sylvanas good or bad? We don't know. She DID just try to kill off basically the entire planet of Azeroth, but if that's part of her plan to stop all souls from going to literal Hell for all eternity, that's less pure evil and more being willing to DO pure evil to do something good. Bolvar, the Lich King, was indeed a paladin. He attacked the Wrath Gate and was facing Arthas when the Fosaken (undead) attacked from the flank. They had catapults on a cliff top and blanketed the entire area with Blight, forcing Arthas to retreat and killing basically everyone. But some red dragons came and used their fire breath to clean up the Blight, which is why Bolvar became a burned husk with perpetually burning dragon fire in his chest.
She opened a rift between the world of the living and the world of the dead when she broke the crown. If you want to see when/why a lot of the player base turned against her I suggest watching Warbringers Sylvanas. I still air on the side of if the night elf hadn't sassed her, everything would've went as planned. Oh, the other two Warbringers are pretty good too.
Actually she wouldve done it because she did want to block the azerite trading routes of the alliance and not have them have like a forward operation base so close to Kalimdor

So Bolvar argues he is the best choice/'sacrifice to become the Lich King as King Ternus said to Tirin there must always be a Lich King or the restless scourge will be an even bigger threat to the world.

The name of the actuell Lich King is Bolvar Fordragon. He was a highlord of the Alliance and part of the Battle at the Wrathgate. He fought on the side of the Horde, led by Dranosh Saurfang. In the fight Putress emerges from ambush and uses the forbidden plague against the forces at the gate. Arthas was there too. Many die, including Bolvar. Alexstrasza and Korialstrasz, Dragons of the red Dragonflight, appear and cleanse the battlefield with their fire from the plague. Later, when the heroes fought against Arthas and defeated him, Tirion Fordring (who beated Arthas with the other Heroes) wanted to take the place of the Lich King, because there must always be a Lich King. But then Bolvar appears, burned, but alive and demanding the place of the Lich King.
Bolvar did not kill Arthas. That was Tirion and the heroes of Azeroth. Bolvar was actually Arthases hanging decoration before he died. He was hanged by the chains above the frozen throne as a trophy. After Arthas died, Bolvar was released and he convinced Tirion to make him the Lich King, because Tirion was ready to put it on. This was Bolvar was able to do 1 last thing in servicec of the Aliance AND Azeroth in general.
A) That's Bolvar not Tirion. Tirion defeated Arthas (Really the light Empowered him to destroy Frostmourne) with the help of the Champions of Azeroth (players). B) The Reason Bolvar took the throne was because without a Lich King the Scourge would rampage uncontrollably across Azeroth without one. The Helm of Domination controls the Scourge while also maintaining the Veil between the world of the living & the Shadowlands.
Well Bolivar is just hanging there until we with turion kills the arthas. And took the seat while we busy with loots🙊. Really Bolivar have 0 credit for lichking battle

actually u said something that bothered me ! Bolvar didn't beat arthas ! i mean arthas could kill him with 1 hit ! it's the new lich king that he must maintain the control of the undead scourge only ! it doesn't mean he's so Strong ! arthas was so powerful that took tirion, horde, alliance and the argent crusade to take him down ! i mean he could have beat bolvar / sylvanas / tirion and everyone on 1v1 ! the old lich king is so powerful and so badass then the new one ! bolvar is so weak comparing to arthas !
