Karma at its finest (threesome: Boston-Montreal-Chicago) - Boston fleeced Chicago by robbing them of Phil Esposito - Montreal fleeced Boston by robbing them of Ken Dryden - Chicago fleeced Montreal by robbing them of Chris Chelios
Here are three more lopsided trades: Markus Naslund from Pittsburgh to Vancouver for Alex Stojanov. Gary Leeman from Toronto to Calgary for Doug Gilmour. Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley from St. Louis to Calgary for Brett Hull and Steve Bozek.
As a Sabres fan... the blackhawks made the worse trade in nhl history... they traded Dominik Hasek to the Sabres for Stephane Beauregard.... nuff said lol
As a Blackhawks fan...the sad thing is that isn't even the worst trade in 'Hawks history, let alone the NHL. The Esposito/Martin trade was worse than losing Hasek. Especially as the Hawks still made a couple of Cup appearances after the trade. Add Espo and Hodge to that team and the Hawks likely would have won at least on of them.
Since the early 90's the Flyers have made so many bad trades. Ex. Carter, Richards, Lindros, Sharp, Forseberg.... The Avs, Hawks, and Kings have a combine 6+ cups since then all of those players were gems. ;(
Russ Courtnall to MTL. The leafs acquired a goon who was known to have huge problems (John Kordic) and a 5th round pick for the skilled forward hat is Courtnall
Cam Neeley AND a 1st round pick from Vancouver for Barry Pederson from Boston. Neeley skyrocketed and Pederson tanked. Long lasting effects for both organizations, but not in a good way for the Canucks.
Ribiero was a losse canon in MTL, like some other trades from MTL made : the Kostitsyn brothers or Chris Chelios. While it may not be a prestigious city as LA, hockey players in MTL are viewed as rock stars.
The most lopsided trade for the Leafs was when they traded Dave Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler for 3 time 50 goal scorer Rick Vaive and 40 goal scorer Bill Derlago ,The worst trade the Canucks ever made.
Calgary has been on the losing side of a lot of lopsided trades. Doug Gilmour, Brett Hull, Marc Savard, all elite players traded away for has beens and never was. Martin St. Louis they didn't even trade, but even worse, they just let him go for nothing, not even the proverbial bag of pucks.
I don't know the official trade but the Flyers sent Bob and Richards to CBJ. When they had been struggling in goal since Ron Hextall and Bob goes on to win a Veznia.
I don't see parts 3 and 4, but one of the worst trades in NHL history was Rick Middleton to the Bruins for Ken Hodge to the Rangers. Hodge was eventually sent to the minors and Middleton had a great career with the Bruins.
Wait so, since it says "Worst hockey trades of all time" I'm assuming that the NHL began after 1996? Because if not, then there is no reason why The Brett Hull, Adam Oates, Marcel Dionne, Cam Neely, Phil Esposito, Gretzky, Eirc Lindros, Alexei Yashin, Joe Thornton, Mark Messier, Doug Gilmour, Teemu Selanne, Tom Barasso, Ron Fancis, Glenn Hall, Jeff Carter deals aren't here.
The Colorodo Rockies trade their first round pick in 1983 to the New York Islanders for Bob Lorimer and Dave Cameron. That first round pick turned out to be Pat Lafontaine.......
Cam Neely and a first for Barry Pederson Markus Näslund for Alek Stojanov Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a sixth for Bryan Allen, Alex Auld and Todd Bertuzzi.
Calgary Flames gave up Martin St.Louis because he was 'too small' but later he went on to captain the Lightning to a Stanley cup win against the Flames (the refs did make a shitty call in game 6 though in all fairness to the Flames)
The Gretzky trade isn't mentioned because the 3 first round picks were used on busts. What if the Oilers picked good players with those first round picks? 1989 Adam Foote, 1991 Ray Whitney, 1993 Saku Koivu
I know this wasn't a person for person trade but I think you should add the Griffin Reinhart trade to the oilers so the islanders could pick up Mathew Barzal in the draft
This should have been called biggest lopsided trades in the last 10 years. I say this because if you want to talk about bad trades the Canucks trade Cam Neely to Boston for Barry Peterson is way up there.
The Luongo, Roy, Lindros and Esposito are hard to beat in term of trade that change for better or worse their teams...i'm a habs fan and even the Gomez trade is not at that level...still bad...
1988 Toronto traded Russ Courtnall to Montreal for John Kordic at the time it was a good deal for the Leafs but when you look at both players stats it wasn't a good deal. RIP John Kordic
Worst trade in NHL history and it didn't make your list? Doug Gilmour, Ric Nattress, Kent Manderville, Jamie Macoun and Rick Wamsley to Toronto in exchange for Gary Leeman, Craig Berube, Alexander Godynyuk, Michel Petit and Jeff Reese. That trade was so lopsided that video games at the time wouldn't even allow the trade. Dumbest piece of management in the history of the Calgary Flames and for once, the Leafs came out on top. If not for a penalty that wasn't called, that trade would have given the Leafs a Stanley Cup.
Imo depending on cap and contact situations both are decent trades considering how young some of those prospects were at the time vs the Impact that Carter and Richards right away after the trade.
Kris Draper from Winnipeg to Detroit for 1$? While Draper was a great shut-down center for the Wings and was a big part of 4 cups, the 1$ couldn't even get a single player for the original Jets
Subban/Webber Trade, Habs have a top d-man that can do nothing in the playoffs because the team didn't make it. Preds have a Cup and a younger player without giving anything up. Physical players always hit a wall while skills take longer to subside.
Come on people. Any team that signs Janne Niinimaa is destined to have THE WORST trade of in hockey history. Literally he is the worst athlete to get out of Finnish domestic league in any sport.
In my personal opinion, one of the worst ever was the Pierre Turgeon vs Shane Corson trade...i remember being mad as hell when they traded Turgeon for Corson Corson was at the end of his carreer, and he was not even close to be at the same level as Pierre, even in his prime! If i remember correctly, Turgeon finished his previous season with 96 points when MTL decided to trade him!! MTL literally destroyed their team with that trade, and with the Patrick Roy trade....Rejean Houle is one of the worst GM ever imo, he was absolutely terrible
2017 NHL Draft, Hawks traded away (to Dallas) their first rounder for a later first rounder. Dallas took goaltender Jake Oettinger. I can be sure that Jake will be a great starter in a few years. We will regret this trade in a few years, mark my words.
Toronto benefitted long-term although I'm sure that wasn't the plan at the time. Boston benefitted short-term. I give the nod to the leafs on this one even if by sheer dumb luck of how things worked out.
Dallas trading James Neal and Matt Niskanen for Alex Goligoski...Nieuwy was a terrible GM... Dallas was hurting for offense on the back-end, so Nieuwy's logic? Trade away a rising productive forward and a stay at home defenseman for a more offensive defenseman who would neither increase the point production of what was lost, nor provide as quality of defense. "Goal-against-ski" was a liability every time he was on the ice and Dallas's defense noticeably got even worse after the trade. Terrible freaking trade for Dallas. James Neal would score 40 goals the next year and has been a 21+ goal scorer every year of his 10 season career. Niskanen had a rough year in Dallas the year before and the year he was traded as well as injury problems, but then went on to be a solid + player for the Penguins and the Capitals as a 1st and 2nd line defenseman.
Yashin for Chara and Spezza Oates to St Louis Luongo for Bertuzzi Thornton for Sturm Neely to Boston Kurvers to Toronto for the pick that got Niedermeyer. Hull to St Louis And how is Greztky to LA not on here? Or wait by "ever" did you just mean since 2010 or something.
Where is Cam Neely to Boston? The Blackhawks trading Esposito and Hodge to the Bruins? The Rangers awful trading of Park and Ratelle for Esposito and Middleton? Trader Jack sending Ted Lindsay AND Glenn Hall to Chicago for basically nothing because he didn't want Lindsay forming a players union?
The worst NHL trade in history? Hands Down it's: May 1967 The Chicago Blackhawks traded Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield to the Boston Bruins for Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and minor league goalie Jack Norris. Esposito and Hodge instantly became 2/3 of the Bruins #1 line and turned the Bruins into a powerhouse that won two Stanley Cups. If you don't know who Esposito is, you should. Esposito, played 9 great seasons for the Bruins. Phil Esposito was, in his era, nearly as prolific as Wayne Gretzky became later. Espo scored 76 goals and 76 assists in 1970-1971 alone, breaking the goal scoring record by an astounding 18 goals. He was also the first player to score 100 points and held the record for total points (152) for ten years. Esposito is a high tier NHL Hall of Famer, without question. THEN The Bruins traded Esposito after 9 seasons to the Rangers for Jean Ratelle & Brad Park Ratelle played 6 seasons for the Bruins and was a 30 to 40 goal scorer and a 90 point player. Brad Park was 2nd in the Norris trophy (best NHL defenceman) race several times (twice for the Bruins) and scored as high as 79 points in a season in his 8 seasons for Boston. Brad Park, a member of the NHL Hall of Fame, played the bulk of his career for Boston. Ken Hodge who played 9 seasons for the Bruins was a 50 goal scorer, and currently holds the record for points for an NHL Right Winger in a season (105) and did it twice (ranked in one poll as the 73rd greatest NHL Right Winger of all time) and is the 143rd all-time scorer in NHL history. ALSO... Ken Hodge was traded by the Bruins to the New York Rangers for Rick Middleton (a possible future Hall of Famer) who played 12 seasons for the Bruins, (was voted Co-Captain with HOF Ray Borque) scoring 988 points (88th all time in NHL history) and tying Ken Hodge's single season points record for a right winger @ 105, plus being 6th in NHL history for career shooting percentage. Fred Stanfield was a standout performer for the Bruins on their 2nd line scoring at least 20 goals and at least 30 assists a year for each of the six seasons he played for the Bruins ON THE OTHER HAND: Jack Norris played in all of ten games for the Black Hawks over two seasons. Gilles Marotte played two and a half seasons on defence for Chicago, scoring 10 goals and 63 assists before he was traded. Pit Martin was a genuinely good player who had 10 seasons for the Blackhawks he scored as much as 90 points once for Chicago. Arguably Martin was a shade better than Fred Stanfield a good player but Stanfield was one of the least players garnered by Boston in the entire timeline of "The Worst Trade in NHL history" In the final analysis as a result of that 1967 trade the Boston Bruins garnered the services of TWO Hall of Famers ( Esposito and Park for 9 and 8 years respectively) an elite Right winger and 50 goal scorer in Hodge for 9 years, a top ten scoring center man in Ratelle for 6 years, another truly elite right winger and Co-Captian in Rick Middleton for TWELVE years. and a good second line center/winger who was 9th in scoring in 1970-1971 for 6 years (Stanfield). Chicago essentially got Pit Martin (a good second line guy) for 10 years, and not much else. I DEFY you to find a trade with greater impact on the success of a club than THIS trade did for the Boston Bruins, for a longer period, and a lesser impact for the trade partner as the Blackhawks got in return... I double dare you.
Toronto trading their first round draft pick to New Jersey for Tom Kurvers and then the Nordiques trading half their team away to Toronto for nothing so that they could draft Lindros and not New Jersey. Surprised the league even allowed the Quebec to Toronto trade
Ok 2 videos in and we still haven't seen the most lopsided trade in NHL History. To NY Islanders: Yashin. To Ottawa: Chara, Spezza, Muckalt. What made it even worse was the 10yr deal NYI signed Yashin to ... haha
