I didn't know macro pads even existed! Thank's for this video, I might get one, and I have to agree that the software and experience on this is very bad

Here's some options to take a look at 👇 There's some wild-looking video editing ones like the Tourbox ✅ geni.us/TourboxElite More general video editing would be the Loupedeck ✅ geni.us/LoupedeckEditor Live streamers opt for units like the Stream Deck as it has excellent software integration to Streaming programs and even controlling lights in their room. The new Plus model (quite pricey) has knobs. ✅ geni.us/ElgatoStreamDeckPlus Currently I'm using a XENCELABS Quick Keys Wireless, oled display, programmable dial with macro recording (no timed delay) and it has per program assignment, so if I have photoshop open it changes all the buttons to ones for that specific program. ✅ geni.us/XENCELABSQuickKeys Also, Gaming keyboards tend to have dedicated buttons on the side, or the ability to change keys to macro's. I used to have perfectly timed combo's assigned, which is why timed delay can be very important with macro's. I really love the tactility of knobs, sliders, anything that increases the ergonomics or efficiency of a task. If DOIO were able to update the Instructions for the Megadalon range to the VIA v3 steps I outlined in this video, then it would have a much better user experience especially with macro recording.

This was the best video! I don't comment on videos, but I got a Doio Meglodon Dual Layer, and I was having the same issues trying to get it working in Via, following your instructions there, I was able to get the Macropad working in Via, now I can do what I want with it. Thank you for taking the time as no one who sells these seem to care to help show you how to make them actually work.

Thanks for doing all this work. It's a astounding a company that was getting this well known is screwing this launch up this hard. I'm going to stick with modding my 8bitdo controller as a macro pad. All the different shaped buttons are a bit easier for me to remember anyway.

It was really surprising to find such a lack of support especially for a current model. Love the 8BitDo hack, there's always something special about making things you already have work for something they weren't intended for!

I know this review isn't intended to be a ringing endorsement of the DOIO macropad, but based on the work you did to decipher and hack it into operation here, I ended up buying it because a lightly programmable 4-key + knob is the perfect Zoom/Teams remote. Thank you for being so tenacious with this!

Mate I'm so happy to read your comment! This macropad really took it out of me to persevere with... and in the end, yeah, it works waay better. I've found a few custom keyboard type manufacturers to have horrible software documentation and implementation, hopefully this changes in the future :) I'm so happy this helped you

Been looking everywhere for supports for DOIO macropods. I have the wireless triple knob. Going to try this later today and I really hope it works! Dropped like $150 of this thing, so I appreciate your efforts to help noob coders getting these things running!

Yeah red flag including NO INSTRUCTIONS in the box 😅 Even simply saying: 1. Download VIA v1.3.1 and Configuration files from doiokb.com 2. In VIA, click File -> Import Keymap, and select a .Json Configuration file Those two lines alone solve what version is required, and what the .json files are 😂 Even better, they should include steps for VIA v3 that I figured out in the video! Thanks for watching 😄🤙

Thank you for the tips, I love the production quality of the hardware for my 16 key Megalodon keypad, but have been struggling with the prospect of programming any macros for it, I thought I was just going to have to regulate it to a numpad for my TKL mechanical keyboard.

This is a brilliant video and super helpful - great job. I think you saved me (and others) a major headache 😅 Hopefully you won’t be angry with me for pointing out a *tiny* niggle. The term for abandoned tech support or functionality across API’s etc is “deprecated” (DEP-REH-CATED), not “depreciated” which is something done gradually over time to the $$ value of assets. Hope you don’t mind the feedback … retired teacher (sorry)

You can open programs easily without any additional software all you have to do is right click on the application you want to start go to properties and in the general tab you have shortcuts there you set a key or a combination of keys as a macro to open the said application. Then you simply put a bind the application to the keys you set ( or use a macro)

Good point to make but that only works if explorer.exe is the active window, if you're in another program windows won't interpret the shortcut commands for file opening shortcuts.

I ordered the Megalodon version (16-button version). Couldn't get it to work. Had the same issues as you had but not the patience to work through and troubleshoot all the steps. Simply isn't worth it considering how many out-of-the-box macro-pads out there. Too bad, because the actual build quality and look is top-notch.

Thanks for sharing! I use a cheap numpad for macros. I use lua macros to map the numpad. Its pretty good and fast. It can map for pretty much any software. I recently posted a guideline and made a template so that non-codind people can turn any keyboard for macros for any software. The only problem I'm facing is lua macros is exe file, so mac user cant use it. Hammerspoon can read lua codes in mac. But I dont know how to turn the lua macros code readable for hammerspoon. Any help?

Hey I downloaded the WinRAR program and the older version (at about 1:50 in your video), and when I go to import the keymap, it still cannot find any files whatsoever. Any suggestions? Excellent vid btw

You'll need to uncompress the .rar file with WinRAR into a normal folder on your desktop. Right click the .rar file, look for the menu option that's to uncompress to current folder :)

Couldn't you just press Alt to make the file menu appear in the 3.0.0 version? I mean, it'd still be garbage, but hopefully stuff like the lighting works there

I got version 3 working at the end of the video, the issue was VIA rejects vendor IDs of 0xFEED, but I was able to change that in the .Json file and get it working 🤙

This seems complicated. An old second keyboard and AHK software would be way better, but it doesn't have any UI for it.

Yeap overly complicated for a macropad. Meant to save you time on your computer, instead takes more time to learn how to set it up haha 😂

piece of junk - and it is sad. I can build my own macro pads with fully custom firmware using arduino hardware, so this is a lovely case. If the FW/SW sucks, you could still overwrite the firmware... except that they use different controllers for the same product.

Haha mate I was going to make the joke that it was easier to program the Arduino keyboard testers key inputs than the Macropad! 😅 I did research flashing custom firmware but stopped myself as have a big future project planned which will replace this macropad. Is a shame though as the hardware is truly beautiful, just a really bad user experience

Yeah... custom keyboards suck like that. I think the keyboard community is in a terrible place right now, I'm trying to wrap my head around this and everything sucks, from software, documentation, all the horribly explained electronics on youtube, the products, the final functionality. I got in this thinking I'd be looking at some basic programming and ended up having to read A BUNCH just to end up still not being able to do what I need. Honestly, keyboards suck, I'll just keep using the "gaming" ones with simple macro functionality.
